Has anyone completed the CFG degree? Considering putting in an application for the next cohort and having a bit of a wobble about the time commitment 😵‍💫

@Rosti1981 I wanted to come back to this thread to share that I have actually been offered a job as a junior data engineer, all through the cfg degree course. It still blows my mind as I never thought I would get a job out of it. So if anyone get a place on the cfg and it's education only, all is not lost as it seems they work hard to get people placed in to tech roles even though they are doing the course on an education only basis.

Turkeyhen · 25/05/2024 21:15

@explain congratulations! That's really heartening to hear 🙂

Wonderful news. I hope it all goes really well!

Great news! Thank you for sharing. Wishing you all the best.

Is anyone planning to apply for the autumn 24 cohort?

Whatmyname · 27/05/2024 15:31

I am applying for code first girls JavaScript course. I have got stuck at the question of the 3 companies I am most interested in working. Am I supposed to pick 3 companies from their employers?

Another issue is, it's starting tomorrow. I am kicking myself for missing this. Is it to too late to apply, should I apply for Python starting next month? Or should I just apply?

Just apply if bookings are still open.
And no, just put three different companies down, don't have to be current sponsors of the degree.
Hope you do get a place but if not, then just keep an eye on it for next time.

Turkeyhen · 27/05/2024 16:07

@Whatmyname I had a 6 week wait after applying for the Kickstarter course I'm doing so definitely get your application in asap

explain · 27/05/2024 17:36

@Whatmyname if the applications are open that means it likely not too late to submit. I applied in late September for the 8 week course and got a place in January. I say just submit it now.

Whatmyname · 30/05/2024 09:36

Thank you to posters who applied to my post.

I applied but didn't hear back. The course has started. Now my options are to apply for Python starting in 2 weeks. Or learn JavaScript somewhere else and then apply for Autumn degree. I read it's easier to start with JavaScript and then move to other languages.

JavaScript is for £115 on udemy. If you know any cheaper options, please do tell me. Thanks again.

Hello,

I've been following this thread and everyone's responses has been so helpful.
Does anyone know when the applications for CFG degree autumn cohort open up???

Turkeyhen · 30/05/2024 12:38

@Whatmyname CFG will offer you a place on a future presentation of the kickstarter you applied for

I’m on the CFG degree at the moment - I’d really recommend The Odin Project. It’s free and self-guided but I found it prepared me well for the degree. Definitely no need to pay lots of money to learn, the content is out there! I tried a few Udemy courses but found that although I could follow along with the videos, I wasn’t actually learning the practical skills to build projects myself.

The thing I liked about The Odin Project is that it encourages you to learn by reading documentation and solving problems with very little hand-holding, rather than coding along with videos. It’s a good way to start getting confident with the sorts of technical resources that you’ll use a lot in your future career!

Good luck!

Edited

Just received an email saying UK applications open on 4 June

Whatmyname · 31/05/2024 09:33

Thank you so much @naptimecoder and @Turkeyhen. Starting with The odin project sounds like a good idea. Will look into it.

Yes definitely don't pay £115! Odin project and/or wait till Udemy has a sale... I've got a JS course (Jonas Schmetman Zero to Hero) that's decent in terms of basics, and I think it was about £12-15.

Rosti1981 · 14/06/2024 20:12

And I echo that it's highly likely you'll be offered a place on the next CFG Kickstarter anyway

Turkeyhen · 25/06/2024 12:26

Any other autumn 2024 applicants here?

Norelyn · 29/06/2024 14:18

Hi, I have just applied to full stack and software engineer roles and they sent me a tech assessment, but haven't opened it yet. I am going to do the web development assessment because i completed their kickstarter on that but i am afraid to open the assessment because i am not sure if i am prepared enough. Have you done it already?

Turkeyhen · 29/06/2024 18:08

Hi @Norelyn - I did the data tech assessment and it was fairly straightforward tbh, if you've done a kickstarter you'll be fine!

Hi @explain , I have just read your thread and it gives me some hope. Congratulations on your job! How exciting! I am in a similar position, have just completed CFG degree education only. I was wondering how have you manage to land a job through CFG? How many months after? Have you just apply for one of the roles they advertise on career channel on Slack?

Hey. CFG emailed me directly about the role, literally out of the blue. It wasn't posted on Slack and I had never heard of the company before. I actually responded to a job positing on Slack once buy they never replied to my email. I decided to go for the interview (all 6!) as I thought I had nothing to lose, and thankfully I got the job. As to why CFG put me forward to interview, I honestly have no idea.

thank you for your reply. That is wild :)) I mean with CFG you never know...but how great it worked out for you! :)
