Starting Keto Newbies

Hey!

Starting Keto from tomorrow. Wedding is in 7 months! I lost a bit of weight before Xmas, but in these last two weeks it's piled back on quite drastically :/ saw a photo of myself today and I looked like a balloon!

My cousin started keto in May 2023 and has lost over 2 stone. From 11st 4 to 9st! This gave me the kick up the butt to do this. I'm not only doing this for my wedding, as I genuinely want to feel slimmer but it'll be a bonus if I can lose a stone or 2 to fit nicely into my wedding dress. Currently - 12st 13lb (might as well call it 13st) mummy of two boys (3 and 2) so tough to lose baby weight!

I'm so new to it though and trying to educate myself on what I must do. I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself though or fixate on numbers because that tends to freak me out and I give up.

Would love to meet anyone else on here who is thinking to do the same this year.

Speak soon. Flowers

Hi, I try to low carb/keto generally but have been off the wagon for a bit. Getting back to it now.

You can use courgetti or sliced leek for spag bol, and same again, cut differently as pasta sheets in lasagne.

lukiebebe · 06/01/2024 19:40

Hello all!
So many great helpful tips from so many of you! I'm so pleased I started this thread! Thanks all.

@HaitchOar Haha to your Tesco unwrapped!! I'm going to do mine now lol!

Sooo last night at the party they had 10 huge pizza trays and I didn't touch one slice!!! I'm so proud of myself! I ate before we went out (mini chicken breast fillets stuffed with a little mozzarella and chorizo) yum so we were full!

Also the cake come out and I just had a spoonful of the whipped cream haha.

They did have a charcuterie board and I stuck to salami and cheese spread!

I did however drink 3 gins but in between I was drinking water. I'm pretty chuffed with that!

Today we had a food shop delivery and went to our local market to buy more veggies! Picked up a wild mushroom assortment which I'm super excited about and some kale. Planning to make kale crisps.

We used up all our left over veggies for lunch bunged them in the oven then coated them in egg and made a huge frittata with cheese grated on top. Lush!

Then this evening I found some 90% pork sausages from the market and had it with cauliflower mash! I made zucchini fritters to go alongside if they were okay but needed more cheese as zucchini can be a bit watery!

Problem is my cauliflower mash was revolting! It lacked flavour (despite grating Parmesan into it and adding salt and pep!) I was gutted as I love cauliflower.

Anyone recommend a decent recipe because it was so bland! Yuck!

@HaitchOar the recipe for mash i had was on grewn chef. It was lovely. It was cauliflower mashed and then add some butter, cheese and wholegrain mustard, along with salt and pepper. It was lovely x

MorningWalk · 06/01/2024 19:47

Well done for staying strong last night!! We had steak in garlic butter and rosemary tonight with cauliflower and green beans. Also had one of those cheese bakes in the ramekin's that we used as a sauce for the veggies. So kind of like cauliflower cheese. Was sooooo yummy x

This will make you laugh. Just looked at my Spotify style “Tesco Unwrapped” for 2023. Tell me you do Keto without telling me you do Keto! 😂

You could go for the 20% fat beef mince. Cheaper and will get your fats in.

HaitchOar · 06/01/2024 20:05

MorningWalk · 06/01/2024 15:46

@HaitchOar love it 😂 are the sausage patties nice? Xx

They’re ok! I have them for my lunch; I use them a bit like bread and put sliced hard-boiled egg, a slice of cheese and a little bit of low sugar ketchup between them. It tastes a bit like a McMuffin, without the muffin.

MorningWalk · 06/01/2024 20:10

@HaitchOar sounds delicious! Im
Going to get some x

ChampooPapi · 07/01/2024 10:49

I’ve been sticking well to Keto and now nearly on day 7 so am going to weigh myself today so I have some kind of ‘starting’ weight. Feel so much leas bloated and determined to stick to this. Will do cauliflower mash next week for sure and report back, I am vegetarian though so any tips on keto vegi friendly sausages are welcome 🙏🏼

ChampooPapi · 07/01/2024 12:47

Exactly 12 stone today, i’ll gove it two weeks untill I weigh again 🙏🏼

Gobolina · 07/01/2024 13:39

I've been back on keto since last week. Had a lovely breakfast of sausages, bacon, egg, avocado, mushrooms and tomatoes. No beans, hash browns or bread and butter. Still missing bread atm but know that will drop off. Eventually 😂

ChampooPapi · 07/01/2024 17:32

@Gobolina I hear you, Had not felt too tempted by bread untill this afternoon buttering my daughter some farmhouse white and slathering it with jam 🤤 I was nearly broken!

Gobolina · 07/01/2024 17:38

My DH makes his own naan/flatbread, they are amazing, I did cave and had some yesterday so from today I've got to stay strong.

swimmingdory · 07/01/2024 18:39

Haven't tracked today but have been good. Had scrambled eggs with ham onion pepper and tomatoes earlier with a small bit of ketchup and dinner is homemade Nando's chicken with coleslaw, should be enough for lunch tomorrow too.

I'm not so fussy with bread but the bowl of chocolates are taunting me. OH said he feels that his belly has massively deflated. I don't 😂 but it'll come.

lukiebebe · 07/01/2024 19:24

@MorningWalk hello how's your day been? Your dinner sounded yummy! I may opt for cauliflower cheese over mash as it put me off lol!

@PossumintheHouse I did wonder this regarding fat % on meats (makes sense I suppose) as we too usually buy 5%!

@ChampooPapi all the best for weighing! In total I have lost 6 lbs this week and fiancé has lost 8lbs! So a stone in total how awesome is that! I am going to try not weigh everyday now, as I imagine it won't be so drastic next week.

@Gobolina all the best !! Your breaky sounds yummy. We had boiled eggs, avocado and turkey rashers for breaky. Told fiance to proper crisper up the rashers as turkey rashers can be so rubbery if not cooked long enough. You got me excited for a mo and thought you were going to say your DH makes homemade keto friendly naans lol!

@swimmingdory hello! Great day for you too it seems! Omg tell me about it I am craving choc so bad! Fiancé bought 85% dark choc which we apparently can have... I'm going to have a cube .. but I reckon it'll be too bitter!

Made another chicken stuffed with mozzarella, chorizo and red pesto. Made a wild mushroom and spinach cheese sauce! Omg Devine! I couldn't finish it though was filling! Fiancé and I realised that in the past we would have had something like that with a side of potatoes or rice! How the heck did we fit that all in! So filling...

MorningWalk · 07/01/2024 20:01

@lukiebebe days been ok. I have gone over on my macros of fat and calories but i have been extra hungry. Still stayed under 20g carbs though! Craving chocolate also like you wouldn't believe and I'm also due on so that doesn't help! Fiancé is polishing off all the xmas stores and had a big bar of cadburys dairy milk out not so long ago. I resisted!!! He asked me when i first started if i minded him eating it in front of me and i have had no issues at all, all week. But tonight was hard!

lukiebebe · 07/01/2024 20:18

@MorningWalk bless you! Gosh I would have found that so hard too! I'm lucky fiancés doing this with me!
Update- dark choc was okay and hit the spot but very bitter! I've come in today too so that's why I was craving it so much too so I feel you!

Don't know if I'm correct but they do say on keto not to worry if you go over the Cals a little as long as you stay within your carbs! I think!

OP posts:
MorningWalk · 07/01/2024 20:23

@lukiebebe yes im not to worried as i have been so good. Compared to drinking a bottle of wine most evenings and eating whatever i wanted its hardly a massive blow out. Im glad i resisted chocolate and wine! Fiancé is happily eating what i cook but then has treats after. I have also been fasting 16/8 everyday this week sometimes longer x

BigBoysDontCry · 07/01/2024 21:06

I make keto naan bread which is actually quite versatile. Made some today and had it instead of pastry with a creamy chicken and mushroom pie filling. Served with brocolli.

I don't do keto anymore but I do low carb so still make some keto meals so I can have my carb allowance for something else.

Good luck to all.

You could try a keto chocolate mousse like this one

Yep, you’re better off getting the fattier mince and fattier cuts of meat. Chicken thighs are good. Big bonus in that they’re usually considerably cheaper as well.

MorningWalk · 08/01/2024 14:06

So day has started well today, still fasting and 19 hours in. Had the day off today and rather then sit around i have just been on a long 10k walk. X

swimmingdory · 08/01/2024 21:44

Hi all

Well done on the walk @MorningWalk suits your username 😉

Had a busy day. Leftovers for lunch then we made a Chinese chicken curry with cauliflower fried rice for tea. Was nice. Over carbs again, and protein but under calories and under 50g carb at least. Just trying to stay focused on being as low carb whilst coping atm.

Did weigh in though and down 4.6lbs, which put me back under 30bmi which is good.

I'm out tomorrow night for an Indian for a friend birthday. Plan is for a dry tandoori chicken with saag paneer unless anyone has other suggestions? Lunch is prepped as tuna mayo again... not a problem really as it's tasty. Was going to take homemade sushi but I'd put too much smoked salmon in and was a bit over bearing will try again later in the week.

Gobolina · 09/01/2024 09:02

Good morning everyone, I had a good day yesterday.

Omelette and half an avocado at lunch, then homemade burgers with cheese & gherkins for dinner. I did plan to have a little bit of cauliflower or air fried green beans but wasn't that hungry.

My blood glucose dropped 2 points from 13.7 yesterday to 11.7 today, so its coming down, and I dropped a few pounds too, 14st 5lbs 8oz yesterday to 14st 3lbs 2 oz. I know this first week or so will be water are carb bloat/inflammation but its still encouraging 😆

MorningWalk · 09/01/2024 13:18

@swimmingdory well done for your day. Under 50g is fine. It takes a while to adjust! Are you logging on MFP? Remember when you take the fiber away from carbs thats your net carbs. I love indian but typically all the bread/dips! I do like the lamb chops though. Thats what i like to have. Well done on the weight loss xx

BigBoysDontCry · 09/01/2024 13:32

Careful with the deducting of fibre from carbs. In UK product info the fibre has already been deducted. On US products it isn't and you can deduct.
