Hi, I’ve not tried Keto before so any advice welcome.

Anyone else just starting out, we could support each other.

Hi All, Day 5 for me. It all still feels a bit counter intuitive with the cream, cheese etc. But I'm trusting the process. Breakfast today was greek yogurt with a few raspberries,. Lunch will be smoked salmon and cream cheese salad. I have some salmon steaks for dinner but can't think what to have with them at the moment.

wildthingsinthenight · 02/07/2020 12:30

Turkeydrumstick ooh no I don't like beef jerky either!
What are everyone's plans for dinner?

wildthingsinthenight · 02/07/2020 12:31

pontiuspilates your food sounds lovely.
I am the same with dinner. Have diced beef and was thinking of a stew but not sure.

lardass88 · 02/07/2020 14:45

@wildthingsinthenight can I ask where you got you low carb crispbread from please?
Also can anyone suggest a dip? Just to eat with peppers etc. Used to have hummous but don't think that's allowed on this x

JustMoved123 · 02/07/2020 15:26

Also interested in low carb crisp bread.

I’ve had a tough day, started off fine and I went to pilates, about half way through I nearly fainted! I have never felt that way in my life and all I can think is my blood sugar was too low. I’m feeling ok now but it gave me a shock and I’ll always eat before exercise now (even though I don’t usually have breakfast) :-( So embarrassing in the middle of a class lying on the floor with my feet up on a chair 😬

Hi everyone and thanks for your advice and recipes. It's my anniversary today and dh bought me a keto recipe book called Quick Keto by Martina Slajerova which looks really nice and she also has a blog and Youtube so I will definitely be trying out some of her recipes.

I'm going to have a Chinese takeaway tonight which won't be 100% keto but I will have a crispy duck without the pancakes and one of the stirfry type dishes.

@lardass88 I have not tried them yet but another favourite youtuber of mine is Headbangers kitchen and he has a few dips that look easy cauli hummus and baba ganoush

KetoPenguin · 02/07/2020 15:51

Sorry to hear you fainted @JustMoved123 do you have any blood sugar issues? Or it could also be your blood pressure sometimes diet can affect that. Hope you are feeling ok now.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 02/07/2020 15:57

I buy the Atkins crisp breads from Amazon (giving Amazon far more of my money than I’d like to at the moment Blush Angry ). They’re pretty good as long as you don’t put anything wet on them! With butter and cheese they’re just like a Ryvita, but I tried one with boiled egg on top and it just went a bit soggy and gross.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 02/07/2020 15:58

Oh crikey! Hope you’re ok Justmoved Flowers

JustMoved123 · 02/07/2020 16:00

I don’t have issues that I know of but I do know I’ve probably not eaten enough in the last few days though? I’ve eaten more today and feel ok, it gave me a shock though.
@KetoPenguin, enjoy your Chinese meal, that’s my favourite food!

Oh no so sorry to hear you fainted! I got really lightheaded on the treadmill last time I did keto and had to get off! I’d definitely try and take it a bit more easier- maybe allow a few more carbs on exercise days? Hope your ok!

wildthingsinthenight · 02/07/2020 20:43

Oh no JustMoved123 hope you're ok!
I find I do much less exercise on keto snd I tend to feel very wobbly after.

lardass88 the crispbreads are from Amazon. Atkins ones

KetoWinnie · 02/07/2020 21:18

@JustMoved123 I'd say I"m having on average 1450 cals per day, and one day a week, 36 hour fast.

I think there were a few days where I went overboard with the butter and nuts and my calorie intake was probably too high, even though I was congratulating myself on how much fat I was eating!

I think I'm doing better now I'm on myfitness plan. I can see my carbs and I can see that my calorie intake isn't making weightloss out of the question.

I did have 1600 cals today but after my 36 hour fast yesterday, I will allow that.

I feeeeeeeeeeel it in my bones that I will get on the scales this sunday and have lost a pound.

I find the once a week 36 hour fasts very easy and as I'm impatient to be slim Grin I'm tempted to step it up to every second day. But I'd be scared that the moment I stopped I'd put twice as much weight back on. Slowly slowly is probably ok.........

Wdyt?

I haven't had any processed food in six weeks though! That can't be bad!

KetoPenguin · 02/07/2020 21:58

My Chinese was delicious and I'm hopeful I stayed in ketosis, not feeling hungry and I felt more comfortable after my takeaway. Normally I wouldn't want to do much except sleep, but I had the energy for a short dog walk so I think that's good.

As well as watching a few keto YouTube videos I watched an interesting video of a fitness YouTuber called Stephanie Buttermore who has been doing something called "all in" which is basically eating as much as you need to overcome health problems caused by getting very lean to compete in bodybuilding contests. She had lost her period and had a lot of problems like being cold and tired, but her main problem was insatiable hunger all the time. This was so interesting for me because after doing a meal replacement diet of around 600 cals a day and losing a lot of weight I struggled with hunger and regained all my weight. Of course I was not as lean as Stephanie but I did restrict calories a lot. Anyway I did not intentionally set out to eat all I wanted and I still struggle with hunger which I find keto is helping with. It just shows what a part these appetite hormones play in our weight loss.

KetoWinnie · 03/07/2020 18:14

I'm feeling like a really slow learner on this diet! Usually I feel hungry on diets so it's a change.

I'm finding it v hard to keep carbs under 20 and I have failed again today! so, I'm on some strange high fat diet where the science isn't going to kick in and put me on ketosis! I'm just on a high fat diet, that's it.

Why are avocados always suggested as a Keto option, according to myfitnesspal, the avocado had 13 grams of carb! if I hadn't had the avocado today I'd have been under 20 and I'm mad because it was a bit past its best.

Avocado, 1 medium 240 13 22 3 3 11

wildthingsinthenight · 03/07/2020 18:28

I have lots of avocado!
I don't track my carbs that way I'm not organised enough

KetoWinnie · 03/07/2020 18:45

I just did a bit of research and an avocado's carbs mostly come from its fiber so the ''net carbs'' in an avocado are actually about a quarter of its total carbs.

That makes more sense.

I need to learn a lot more.

So all of those days I thought I'd had too many carbs to be in ketosis, I was doing better than I thought.

I need a better carb tracker.

Can anybody recommend a carb tracker that distinguishes between net carbs and just carbs?

Myfitnesspal is missing a trick there really.

Turkeydrumstick · 03/07/2020 19:05

I read somewhere yesterday that If using my fitness pal always try and use their fruit and veg linked UK store like Tesco by searching Tesco avocado. That way the carbs are normally right.

I’ve been such a pig today, chorizo sausage, eggs bacon, cheesies, half a keto bar, chicken legs, halloumi fries and broccoli, mixed nuts... and an uncle joes mint ball! It’s normally takeaway night tonight so not been too strict with the calories and hopefully won’t have put all the weight back on tomorrow!

Dulcedelecherocks · 03/07/2020 19:18

Ketowinnie an avocado is about 2g carbs for a whole one so you're ok Smile

All these apps are notorious for giving you the wrong figure! One way to minimise that is to search in the app with a uk supermarket at the front. So for example, rather than search avocado, try 'Tesco avocado'. Also if it's something that came in a packaging, always trust your label rather than the app. So if the label says 3g carbs per 100g and the app says 5, you go with 3. This is because the same produce can have different amount of carbs depending on weather, soil etc. For example, I love baby corn, and I have bought some which were 2.2g per 100g, and some that were 6.5!!!
Also remember that uk labels have already had the fibre deducted so the figure we see as "carbohydrates" is already the net carb figure.
I hope that helps. You're not going over your 20g after all 😘

Dulcedelecherocks · 03/07/2020 19:19

Sorry Turkey I've just read your post and I've repeated what you said about uk stores! Great minds eh?

daisychicken · 03/07/2020 19:20

Carb manager - you can choose to see just net carbs
daisychicken · 03/07/2020 19:23

I should add that you can search for say Morrisons sliced ham or for a brand name ie Branston's Baked Beans. You can also scan the barcode of the item and the app will search for the item or you can add it in yourself. Finally, you can add in a recipe and then split it into portions and the app will calculate the carb count for you.

Dulcedelecherocks · 03/07/2020 19:28

I must admit I also prefer carb manager. Having said that, it also has loads of incorrect entries.

I do like the recipe feature though and the things I make all the time are all there so it's easy to establish how many carbs I'm eating in a certain meal.

KetoWinnie · 03/07/2020 20:34

thanks everybody! Will start using carb manager now.

I'm heartened to know that I wasn't failing. I haven't been eating any processed food.

KetoWinnie · 03/07/2020 20:35

So, labels not too big an issue. Although I guess, black olives, I do read the label. There are foods I'm eating that I don't consider processed but that have labels. Natural Greek yoghurt, Hummous.
