Egg fast starting Monday 21 July

StuntNun · 19/07/2014 14:45

This is the support thread for the egg fast. I have based the rules on Jimmy Moore's Eggfest. Please note that this is an experimental fast and may not be suitable for people with underlying health conditions. It is intended for people that are already following a low carb - high fat diet and are trying to break a stall or lose the last few pounds to reach their goal weight.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a doctor or nutritionist. If you follow this fast and have any issues at all such as feeling unwell then seriously consider stopping the fast immediately. Alternatively wait until a few of us have tried it first!

THE RULES

1. Eat at least six eggs per day
This is not a calorie-restricted diet so eat to fullness.

2. Buy the best quality eggs you can
Free range eggs may contain more omega 3 fats and vitamin D.

3. Eat one tablespoon of butter per egg
Coconut oil, olive oil and mayo may also be used.

4. You may add up to one ounce of cheese per egg if desired
Make sure your cheese is low carb.

5. Drink as much water as you can: at least 2-4 litres MINIMUM
Black or bulletproof coffee, black tea, green tea and herbal tea can be added if required.

6. Add salt and keep taking your usual vitamins (if taken)
Consider extra magnesium and potassium to prevent cramps.
If you suffer from constipation then flaxseed may help.

7. Exercise daily
Even a short walk will help maintain lean muscle mass.

8. Eat three meals a day; if not hungry eat one egg
Your appetite will be reduced but keep eating to preserve lean muscle mass.

9. Follow the egg fast for three days; five days may give better results
You will be sick of eggs by the third day.

10. Transition back to your normal diet
E.g. the day after eat two egg meals and one normal meal (whatever you usually eat), the day after that eat one egg meal and two normal meals. Consider keeping on eating at least two eggs a day to maintain the effects of the fast.

All the calculators say different Miffy, I think I was getting enough protein on the egg fast for not doing much exercise but not quite enough for the level of exercise that I'm current doing.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/07/2014 07:18

Miffy I think it has definitely set off carb cravings for me, I've been LCing for a little while and have not had cravings like this before. I'm really short, so only get 58g carbs per day, which I find quite hard to stick to, mines is worked out against lean body mass and being lightly active but I think extra is added if someone is obese, along with activity level.

I wont be doing the egg fast again either Stunt, I would do meat and eggs but I definitely am finding I don't feel quite right after the eggs.

StuntNun · 27/07/2014 09:13

I have to keep my carbs at 20g or below to avoid craving a and uncontrolled eating but I think that's partly comfort eating as I'm generally very stressed out at the moment. I don't see that the meat and egg fast offers anything over ubercamp which keeps carbs very low but allows veggies.

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/07/2014 09:19

I'm always under 20g macros allow for 23 but I never go that high. Think I will just try Ubercamp. I suspect the calories in all the dairy I have is the problem.

StuntNun · 27/07/2014 09:22

Dairy triggers cravings for me as well Schro but I'm okay so long as I don't eat lots of dairy stuff.

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/07/2014 09:27

I've always eaten far too much of the stuff. :( Have cut out most cream now though, that was a big problem.

miffy49 · 27/07/2014 12:13

My carbs are always well under 20gr. I'd initially thought that the egg fast sounded manageable as its the three things I like most but the more I read last week the more I felt I was better on Uber. Maybe its the sheer lack of variety and the need for some veg that has caused the craving issues.

I've got through just under two weeks on Uber now but last night I struggled and caved in to a bit of chocolate. It was only half of a 25gr Moser Roth bar which is hardly a binge bit it was annoying to think that the cravings had won. To add insult to injury I didn't actually enjoy it. some how it doesn't hit the spot any more. To my credit I left the chocolate tart and the cream in the freezer. There was a time when I'd have been furiously defrosting!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/07/2014 12:19

Half of a moser bar is only 2.5g of carbs! I very nearly caved to a pb cup made with mower last night, resisted, just!

Iamblossom · 27/07/2014 14:37

I had a very low carb day on Friday, but ate a while leak (not a big portion of leeks IMO but it was a whole leek with the rough ends chopped off) and these came to 16g according to MFp, so I ended up on 23!

Those of you regularly eating 20g or less a day, can you tell me what you are eating in a day please?

Iamblossom · 27/07/2014 15:09

*whole leek!!!!

miffy49 · 27/07/2014 15:50

Nah, its nearer to 4gr Schro . It was the 70% not 85%. I really shouldn't eat it though as its high in oxalates and I have VPS partly due to the FMS and partly to a botched episiotomy. When I get an attack I have to go strictly low ox and I've been struggling with it over the last couple of months. Even that bit is enough to trigger the pain. I'd been a lot but and today I feel as though I'm sitting on broken glass again so it serves me right!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/07/2014 17:02

Ah, I forget that there is a 70!

God that sounds painful and I hope it passes quickly. I think I am starting to go through withdrawl from pregabalin and I have only lowered the dose.

Blossom Lots of meat,, eggs and cheese, I mainly do cabbage, lettuce and mushrooms to not over do carbs on veg. You just need to get creative,it's a lot easier when you can add nut flours.

questions2008 · 27/07/2014 21:54

hello all. i agree with you all about the egg fast, it felt way too restrictive, id rather have the option of other meat with the egg than just the eggs. But it may be useful when you need a kick up the arse.

so fri, sat and sun I have eaten very little carbs, apart from that in eggs and cheese. Still drinking coffee black! one little floret of cauliflower today and 10 almonds for snacks. I had grilled sprats and chicken wings for lunch today. Tried belly pork for the first time for dinner yesterday. Tuna mayo for lunch and devilled eggs for breakfast.

I've now finished 3 weeks on LC (and apart form that cocktail/pulled pork evening haven't cheated once) and scales are showing a total of barely 3kgs loss. Considering I have technically 20kgs to get to a healthy BMI I feel that this is way too slow for the beginning...?

I have no plans of giving up, but getting worried that this slow rate of loss will eventually lead to frustration....

StuntNun · 27/07/2014 23:48

I would say that's a typical rate of weight loss Questions. If you're losing fat and not lean body mass then it's practically impossible to lose more than two pounds a week. When I lost weight last year my average weight loss was two pounds a week for the first few weeks then a pound a week for the next four months. Your body has a complex system of checks and balances to prevent rapid weight loss. The plus side is that steadily losing weight will give your skin and other tissue time to shrink back in as you lose the fat. 3kg in three weeks sounds like good progress, especially as the third and fourth weeks of low carbing are the worst for weight loss due to hormonal responses to the initial loss of weight. I would recommend you find a way of eating that suits you so that you can sustain it for the long haul without cheating. That's the fastest way to get the results you're looking for.

questions2008 · 28/07/2014 11:11

thanks stuntnun for the reassurance. It's made me feel better. Smile
Logically I agree with you in terms of slowly losing weight, better for skin, not putting it back, less likely to cheat etc. I guess when I have lost weight before it has been quite drastic (VLCD for 4 months lost 33kgs) so tend to have remnants of that mindset - I'm not losing as fast! but then I try to remind myself I'm also not starving myself either!

But I fee as motivated and energised today as I did starting off, which is good. Grin

StuntNun · 28/07/2014 11:39

Questions it's natural to be impatient but think about the physique you want to have once you're at or near your target weight. Do you want to look slim when you're clothed but have wobbly fat and loose skin? Or do you want to be genuinely healthily slim? Obviously a rhetorical question but if you want the latter then you're going to have to change your way of eating for life. Yes you'll be able to indulge in the odd treat and add a few more carbs when you're at maintenance but it will be a long haul. However it will be a long haul of steady weight loss and new victories. Every time you go down a notch on your belt or have to buy an item of clothing in a smaller size then you'll feel that sense of success. And if you want to look good, whatever your weight, then make sure you include some exercise which will both speed up the weight loss and help all the other tissue shrink back in as you lose the fat.

OP posts:
questions2008 · 28/07/2014 11:52

yes you're totally right. I do need to change my mindset, I know it needs to be a long-term thing rather than short-term gains or losses, rather. It's just adjusting my (high) expectations to reality I guess.

Also true on the exercise front, my treadmill is being fixed on Wednesday so will be able to start using it again. I need to run off these thunder thighs! Blush

Iamblossom · 28/07/2014 12:38

well I was still 9 3 this morning, which has pleased me immensely.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 28/07/2014 12:49

I'm back to 153 but I've had a bad week food wise and cheated last night with vienetta and 2 celebrations. Not how I remember milk chocolate tasting at all! Miraculously not kicked out of keto but have the stomach from hell, however, those crazy carb cravings I had, have vanished! Confused

StuntNun · 28/07/2014 13:03

Yes for all my reservations about the egg fast the weight has stayed off so I'm 9 st 2.5 lb as of this weigh in. After yesterday's KFC then I'm going to have a strict weekend then get a Thai takeaway on Saturday to celebrate my DH getting back from a 12-day business trip.

OP posts:
Iamblossom · 29/07/2014 07:58

How come you can have a KFC stunt nun and lose weight and I can be strict low carb (12g yesterday) and be a pound up? 9 4 this morning. Angry

StuntNun · 29/07/2014 08:02

Tee hee Blossom I'm another pound down this morning! This meat and eggs fast is the business! Seriously though the KFC was only 14g carbs and I didn't have a big dinner after that.

KEGirlOnFire · 29/07/2014 08:04

Hmmm be warned.

I did SW for a few weeks earlier this year. Eggs are 'Free' so I could eat as many as I wanted and did.

Now I can't eat eggs at all. They make me violently ill. I can have them in cakes, but Omelettes, boiled eggs, fried eggs, egg sandwiches etc all make me really poorly.

I can only put it down to eating so many while I'm slimming world because I've been eating them all my life without any adverse side effects!!

Iamblossom · 29/07/2014 08:16

I'd be buggered if I couldn't eat eggs.

Stuntnun that is just downright unfair. I hate my scales.

StuntNun · 29/07/2014 08:21

I didn't eat eggs for ten months while I was breastfeeding my egg-intolerant DS3. It made low carb a lot easier as I couldn't have cake no matter what!
