'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Bewitched you might like to read Zoe Harcombe about cholesterol.

From everything I've read, low carbing is good for cholesterol.

It's also worth reading "The Great Cholesterol Con" by Dr Malcolm Kendrick, if you cn.

Agree with the others re. cholesterol and those book recommendations. A few years ago I had my bloods done before starting low-carb, just so I could keep an eye on it. My cholesterol dropped by 2 points and my triglycerides (now thought to be the most useful indicator for heart problems IIRC) sank from 4.something to 0.5.

Thanks Humphrey

My copy of Dr Briffa's 'Escape the diet trap' came today and 6 chapters in, I am convinced. I'm a doctor - and I can't believe I never believed in this before, thinking it was dangerous or ineffective. I am reading the summaries out to DH, who is not a big reader, and still going for "different things work for everybody" and doesn't get the importance of some of the science in there.

Mlig I am also all or nothing, for me it's part of an addictive personality.

Mlig · 06/01/2014 15:39

Littlemissdisorganised, I have a very addictive personality too, it must be linked x

StuntNun · 06/01/2014 15:41

Interesting tips for starting low carbing from Michael Eades' blog.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 06/01/2014 16:43

The carbs are calling me. Just have some crisps Tot. It's just one bag. No no no!

This will get worse before it gets better!

Is natural yoghurt flavoured with an essence of some sort ok then? I love Vanilla. I've been easing myself in today - lovely scrambled eggs for lunch, going to have a pork chop and spinach with butter for dinner but breakfast was a big fail. Tried to have full fat yoghurt but it just made me gag. I must have trained myself over the years to like the taste and texture of low far things - the full fat yoghurt felt so thick! Going to have to crack breakfasts if this is going to work. Can you eat too many eggs?

Suzymoo9 · 06/01/2014 16:49

With the bootcamp light how many carbs can we eat a day? What is the main difference between this and the strcit one that starts next week? In light can we have fruit and the odd slice of toast & nuts?

Thanks, this is a great support.

Little miss disorganised: it's also worth reading the eating academy blog by Peter Attia. He's a Dr for whom low carb turn everything he knew on its head. His blog convinced me that it was worth a go and I wasn't going to die of a heart attack after six months on it!

Going to bore you with my pics again- it does work and I eat/ate copious amounts of butter Grin

I hate this photo but it shows the change

Andreas Eenfeldt is another doctor writing and blogging about low carbing.

From StuntNun's link:

"...insert some pats of butter under the skin of a chicken leg and thigh before cooking, and wolf them with your fingers while the fat drips down your arms." :o

MrsHughJarse · 06/01/2014 17:50

I am binging on low carb reading - previous boot camp threads, recipe threads. Etc..... It feels like its a dream come true - I think I have been ' on a diet' and starving hungry on and crucially off - (hence my new username) for about 20 years...... What a saddo ! Have just turned 45 -and determined to sort myself out once and for all. It just sounds all so yummy - too good to be true, almost like an April fool . the grim truth is on the scales, but with all this using up of Carby goodies, I feel it might be a stone more by next Monday !Grin

ChesterDrawers · 06/01/2014 18:14

How long between those two photos goodas? The transformation is amazing, bloody we'll done.

goodasitgets · 06/01/2014 18:17

It will be just under a year now Smile
Long way to go still but it's a continuing process!

NewStartNewStory · 06/01/2014 18:17

Well I was going to start back today. But I managed to chuck my cauliflower and the bowl it was in at the floor due to tiredness. As a resulted I have resorted to a heavily butter thin bread ham sandwich because at least if i chucked that at the floor it wouldn't take 20mins of crawling around on my hands and knees clearing up glass.

My top tip for bootcamp is water, water, water. And sleep. sleep will help keep the sugar demons at bay. mumbles something about needing to follow own advice.

Looking forward to eating 3 proper meals a day and the return to a more normal sleep pattern. Ah the benefits of this woe that you wouldn't expect...

StuntNun · 06/01/2014 18:24

Here's the second part of that article.

projectbabyweight · 06/01/2014 18:30

I've had a good day (food-wise, I'm not referring to the teething baby and potty training toddler Grin )

Looking forward to fitting into my old jeans, but also the other random side-effects I've had before, like better skin, a niggling ear infection clearing up and small patches of eczema disappearing Smile

sybilfaulty · 06/01/2014 18:36

Great photos, Good as! I have got my tummy shocker pics which I will post when I am brave. I need to work in the old gut a bit before the final after shot.

Not been very hungry today but not had enough water either. As I am off the booze tonight it will be water or herb tea all round. Camomile or mint teas are both good as an alternative drink if you don't like black tea or can't stomach yet another glass of water. We all were very excited about a peppermint and liquorice tea this time last year, but that is REALLY sweet and was too much for me. Clipper tea make a nice sleepy tea which is not too sweet. It's not as good as wine, but hey.

SayraT · 06/01/2014 19:18

I've just signed up on the bootcamp thread (and mumsnet!) can't wait to get started.

I tried to start on Friday but didn't do very well so started again today though I have had some berries which I know aren't allowed on bootcamp.

Today I've had:

B: Scrambled eggs (with butter), green tea and glass of water
L: Broccoli soup, ff greek yogurt and mixed berries and a glass of water
S: Chicken bits, cucumber and carrot sticks
D: Broccoli soup, roast chicken leg (butter under skin with garlic and thyme) and lots of veg and another glass of water

I feel full now but I know that lots of people say that they don't feel as hungry whereas I always feel hungry! Especially when I eat meat, my food list is longer than the others. Will I still lose weight or does everyone else actually just eat less!
