'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

I may have got a bit carried away so have had:

B: Belly pork and mushrooms cooked with coconut oil (veer from wanting a good breakfast to not being hungry til lunch but am going to make sure I eat 3 meals a day at least for the next 3 weeks)
L: Rocket salad with avocado, vinaigrette, celery, peppers and coriander
D: Roast chicken skins with the yummy skin on with cauli puree made with double cream.

Am now very, very full! Oh and have drunk 3 litres of water so far so just 0.5l to go, based on the spreadsheet.

Am going to show a little more restraint tomorrow. When do the carb cravings normally kick in? So far, so good!

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 06/01/2014 19:37

Good as

Thank you for post those, it's good to see some inspiration when you're on day 4!

I'm really worried that I'm eating too much compared to what other people are putting down. Days 1-3 I've definitely been hungry and snacked; last night I couldn't sleep as I was hungry and I'm quite used to going to bed a bit peckish (most useful weight control method I'd found previously).

Today I've had:
B: 2 eggs and mushrooms, cooked in butter
L: Broccoli and stilton soup with some bacon in it and a wodge of flaxseed bread (now I'm having a wobble… is flax ok on bootcamp?)
Second L : A small (matchbox) bit of pork belly with no crackling as I hate it and salad. No dressing.
D: Cottage pie with celery, leeks, beef mince, and stock; the mash being turnips, celeriac and cream and cheese on top.

3 coffees with just a splash of cream.

I'm not hungry this evening, at last!

BIWI · 06/01/2014 19:53

Why no dressing on your salad?

Fat is your friend, and it is what will stop you getting hungry!

Suzymoo - we don't count carbs on Bootcamp Light or Bootcamp! The difference between this week and next week is that we haven't started, but are just easing our way into things. Some people wanted to get stuck in asap, so are Bootcamping, for others - especially those who are new to low carbing - it's a way to move towards it gradually so, hopefully, minimising the likely impact of carb/flu

My day:

Breakfast - two boiled eggs
Lunch - 3 slices roast beef, iceberg lettuce and spinach salad, with a vinaigrette dressing

I have just made the most delicious salmon and feta bake, adapted from the IPD cookbook. Makes 4 or 5 huge portions.

2 salmon fillets
200g block of feta cheese (cubed)
4 or 5 frozen spinach blocks, more if you like (IPD used broccoli, but I prefer spinach)
2 tbs chopped parsley
150g grated cheddar
3 eggs
200ml double cream
1 carrot, diced finely, just to add a bit of crunch.

  1. Dice the salmon and put into a lasagne type dish
  2. Add the feta, spinach blocks and parsley and half of the cheddar
  3. Whisk together the eggs and cream and stir in. Grate over the rest of the cheddar.
  4. Bake in a 190 degree oven for about 25 mins until golden brown.

I served it with avocado and salad leaves.

This is Seriously Good.

Spicy Cauliflower Rice (serves 2-4, depending on the size of the cauliflower)

One small cauliflower, cut up into florets, and pulsed in the food processor until it looks like rice or couscous (if you have a large cauliflower, you might want to add another shallot)

3 shallots, sliced
2 red, birdseye chillies, chopped finely
2 large cloves of garlic, chopped finely
soy sauce (a good brand like Kikkoman)
Handful of chopped coriander
black pepper

In a large frying pan or wok melt some coconut oil (or use whatever oil you prefer - sesame would be good in this recipe)

Sauté the chopped garlic and chilli for 30 seconds or so and then add the shallots and continue to fry until they're soft

Add the cauliflower and stir round so it's coated in all the oil, and cook over a medium heat for about 5 minutes (keep an eye on it and add a splash of water if it starts to stick)

When the cauliflower is soft enough for you, add a couple of tablespoons of soy sauce, stir and then add the coriander

Serve once the coriander has wilted a little.

I need a kick up the arse, I think I might need to do boot camp.

I sort of went Primal about a month ago, and lost half a stone in three weeks. Since then I've been eating a frig load of nuts, berries and even honey. Oh and Christmas happened, so I had a lot of chocolate and booze. It's hardly surprising, but the weight loss has completely stalled.

Go on then. I started boot camp today and so far have had...

Breakfast - poached egg and two gluten free sausages, 2 coffees
Brunch Blush - flaxseed muffin with chilli and Parmesan, butter on top
Lunch - small bowl of leftover chicken parmigiana with med veg and creme fraiche stirred in
Dinner - spag Bol with courgette spag

I've drank lots of water and a few cups of chamomile tea.

I do have a question though - as I'm not cold turkeying it, will I still experience carb flu?

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 06/01/2014 20:08

My evening meal was amazing. Yum yum yum. Grin

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 06/01/2014 20:13

BIWI

No dressing as I've run out of mayo any my husband polished off the vinaigrette and I was too hungry and thirsty to make more!

(DH is like a rake and can eat all the fat I'm eating, plus carbs and stay thin. Bastard.)

GrumpyCrossPatch · 06/01/2014 20:13

Am not hungry but can feel the kids' Christmas chocolates calling me. Have been good as gold all day. Must hold on [tortured superhero face].

StuntNun · 06/01/2014 20:16

Sayra it's important to avoid being hungry - hunger sends you towards carbs. Eat when you're hungry and have low carb snacks handy. I keep a pack of Peperamis in the car for emergencies!

SayraT · 06/01/2014 20:26

stuntnun I was just worried because compared to what everyone else has written I seem to have eaten loads and others say they lose weight but is that because they feel full and actually eat less calories?

I'm not too worried about eating carbs when I am at home, I live by myself and don't buy bread, biscuits, crisps, chocolate, sweeties etc and would never go out to get them. Work is going to be the hard one as we all like baking and often have homemade cakes etc at coffee breaks.

I am hoping that if I start low-carbing now while everyone at work is also on a health kick by the time cakes come round again no one will thinks its odd I'm not having any!

BIWI · 06/01/2014 20:46

Sayra - it isn't a competition! The key thing is to make sure you're keeping your fat levels up and eat enough so that you're full (not stuffed!), and if you're hungry - eat.

Once you get into it properly you will find that your appetite does diminish significantly anyway.

I found today quite easy, I did cheat and have a fruit smoothie but I need to have it as it's the only thing that makes me go when I'm constipated. I'm not sure how I will go with no fruit, I fear I may be very bunged up by the end of the 2 weeks!

I have made a big batch of low carb shepherds pie, so that's tomorrow's dinner and Wednesday's lunch sorted. I have to do a food shop tomorrow after work to stock up.

I like the sound of bolognaise with courgette spaghetti, can someone share their recipe with me please?

Plonkysaurus · 06/01/2014 20:58

Blizy, I bought one of these specifically for courgette spaghetti! Also great our salads.

My bolognese recipe is quite basic, I don't really do set quantities. Brown the mince and remove, then sweat a few carrots, celery and leek (chopped quite small), add bacon and mushrooms and let it sweat for a further 5 min. Put the meat back in, with some chopped tomatoes and purée, and a splosh of water. Simmer for at least 1hour. Eat!

Fott he courgettes i just slice them with my peeler and cook in butter with a bit of seasoning.

Slatecross · 06/01/2014 21:05

Mr and Mrs Slatecross signing in! We are both going to start on Jan 13th and I'm easing myself into it a bit. I've valiantly worked and getting rid of the Christmas biscuits and even just a couple of days without sugar has made me feel more energised!

Why can't you have sugarfree drinks? Mr Slatecross is a diet coke addict!

Ruprekt · 06/01/2014 21:11

B...2 poached eggs, bacon and coleslaw

L...goats cheese and coleslaw

D...Waitrose (reduced to 99pSmileSmileSmileSmile) smoked paprika chicken, broccoli, sprouts and creamy, cheesy leeks. Smile

Water, fizzy water, coffee

A good day. ThanksThanks

blizy · 06/01/2014 21:13

Thanks plonky, so I can just do normal bolognaise buy not have pasta. I've never made slag Bol from scratch, I use a jar of ragu Blush.

sueh95 · 06/01/2014 21:21

Plonky I love the sound of the flaxseed chilli and parmesan muffins - is there a recipe on the forum for this?

Thanks

PseudoBadger · 06/01/2014 21:28

BIWI - please could you post the method for your leeks with bacon, cream and cheese?

Well last Thursday I cut all chocs, crisps, potato, pasta, bread etc. I finished the Christmas cake and pudding for desserts and had the odd glass of wine. Apparently I lost 2 kilos?! (I am breastfeeding though)

Today was bootcamp proper. Again a bit gluttonous due to BF...:

Tea and milk x3
Coffee with quite a bit of cream
Lots of water

Breakfast - 2 poached eggs, mushrooms cooked in olive oil and butter.

Lunch - 2 Smoked salmon slices
Mozzarella, Avocado, Cucumber salad with pizza express House Dressing (I couldn't find my vinegar so couldn't make my own)

Snacks - 3 slices of Ham, Cheddar thick slice

Dinner - cottage pie without the top (Minced beef, carrot, celery, shallot, garlic, oxo cube)
Jamie Oliver's Smashed celariac

Plonkysaurus · 06/01/2014 21:29

Blizy you certainly can, courgette noodles are a great substitute for pasta/rice.

Sueh this one requires actual quantities!
1/4 cup (4tbsp) ground flax
1tsp oil/butter
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 egg
As much chilli as you want
As much cheese as you want!

Mix it up in a cup and microwave for a minute. Stir it thoroughly or you get bits that only taste of baking powder. You can change the flavours a lot too, nuts and cinnamon with a bit of honey/stevia and coconut oil is lovely.

PseudoBadger · 06/01/2014 21:29

Oh, and a Jasmine Tea

fizzly · 06/01/2014 21:38

Fizzly and Mr Fizzly signing in. We are starting full on Boot Camp today - have seriously over indulged and need to get on with it. I need to lose a stone, minimum - would like to lose 1.5. DH in a similar boat. I'm in the spreadsheet - he won't let me add him (chicken) but I'll be keeping track of his stats!

Today:
B: Two boiled eggs each with butter (me), without butter (him - he doesn't like adding butter but knows he should!).
L: I had some celeriac and spinach soup, with some snacks of cheese and cucumber/carrot batons around the day. DH had tuna salad, avocado and similar snacks.
D: A chicken carbonara-type thing with mushrooms, celery and some fried savoy cabbage on the side.

And drunk my own body weight in water. It is ok to add lemon to water isn't it??

LucyVFood · 06/01/2014 21:44

I'm having fat/oil/butter issues again. It goes against every ingrained diet habit in me.

Say I'm adding butter to scrambled eggs. I add about a level teaspoon. Too much or too little?

Adding oil to salad. I add about 10ml. Too much or too little?

Fat is going to be my downfall...
