'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Perfectly excusable! Mine is low carbing with me so that should help - have given him a copy of the rules to be going on with! He has vaguely low carbed with me before but is going to commit properly this time. We have also reduced the carbs in the DCs diets a little and noticed wonders in their behaviour, concentration and energy levels.

The Grumpy family are easing themselves in this week with LC breakfast/lunch/snacks and normal dinners plus lots of water. This Grumpy has just been for a run to try and get her mojo back so all good so far!

gussiegrips · 06/01/2014 10:03

I'm in, for sure.

Apart from it sounding yum (yes, I'd love to come to your house for dinner, Chester. How kind of you to ask)

But, I've muddled myself by bingeing on reading about low carb.

Why do you choose low carb light initially? And, please tell me there's a link to a huge list of meal plans so I can get my head round "eat full fat yogurt and cream (yum), don't eat brown rice (no great loss)"

StuntNun · 06/01/2014 10:48

Gussie quite often on these threads people post what they have been eating that day so you can get some ideas. My dinners are usually pretty standard but with the carb source replaced so: bolognese with courgette ribbons, curry with cauliflower rice (blitzed in the food processor and fried in butter), salmon with microwaved leek (with butter) and courgettes fried in butter, chicken legs (rub butter in before cooking in the oven) with mushrooms fried in butter and steamed broccoli with melted butter added.

Did I mention that we use a lot of butter? Wink

heliumheart · 06/01/2014 11:37

I've had omelette with cheddar for breakfast, might just have some ham roll-ups with cream cheese for lunch, and have an enormous vat of bolognese on the go downstairs. Hopefully I'll be bothered to have courgette ribbons with it, always feels so much more civilised Grin

Feeling quite motivated. Is very unlike me to have a vat of anything on the go at this time of day.

Morning everyone,
I know that a soft start would be no good for me, so with all excuses over ( DH's brithday at the weekend) I have started bootcamp proper this morning.
I have had breakfast of yoghurt and linseeds with a few drops of lemon essence ( sugar free!) to flavour it, and am on my third glass of water at my desk so far this morning (plus a coffee), so am starting to feel that I'm sloshing around a bit.

Gussie, I did this this time last year and it was so much easier to stick to once the shock of the 2 weeks of bootcamp strict were over and I could add berries and nuts back. - but I would recommend doing the strict bit too to kill the sweet craving if like me you have a sweet tooth.

Because of all the fat I never felt hungry after the first week where it took me a while to get my head around it all, and best of all the weight fell off. Although I went back to my previous way of eating - it was less carby than previously. I am starting again as some of the weight began to creep on again. Last year I had to buy smaller clothes and they are beginning to feel a bit snug so I don't want to have to go back to the "big" ones again.

projectbabyweight · 06/01/2014 11:42

I've started today too. Going well so far: 2 eggs fried in butter, coffee without sugar (a big deal for me!), mint tea, smoked salmon & cream cheese (early lunch).

Weirdly I didn't gain any weight over Christmas, but did gain an inch on my hips, which really shows as I'm pear shaped. Want to lose 3 inches though that might be a bit ambitious in 10 weeks Grin

Good luck to everyone and many Thanks to BIWI.

MrsJoeHart · 06/01/2014 11:49

Weighed myself to find that I've gained a stone and 5lbs since July! Frankly I'm not surprised as I've been going bonkers. Starting today, so just writing my shopping list and off to the shops.

daisychicken · 06/01/2014 11:57

sarahbeeny LTB! Wink sorry had to get it in somehow I agree, perfectly excusable to strangle him! My DH wasn't helpful when I first low carbed but once he saw the weight drop, he did change his attitude (mostly, I do get moans about celeriac and swede but he's been told quite firmly that he either helps me or I go back to eating carbs and put weight on & be depressed... that stopped him Wink )

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 06/01/2014 12:27

I'd love to give this a go but I have quite high cholesterol and it seems to contradict all the advice for that.

encyclogirl · 06/01/2014 12:28

Hi everyone, I faced my demons and hopped on the scale this morning.

Bear in mind I've been soft bootcamping since New years day. I am still nearly two stone heavier than I would like to be. Feck!

Anyway, onwards and onwards.

Br: 2 homemade pork sausages (dh makes them so I know what's in there)
Lunch: Just had it, Smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, loads of green leaves.
Dinner: Chicken salad.

Bit heavy on the salad today, need to think about how I mix this up. I get very lazy food wise and have the same thing on repeat, then of course I get bored...

Hopefully I'll be a few pounds down come next Monday, but more importantly I will hopefully have this WOE embedded.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2014 12:35

Last time I weighed myself I had a complete nervous breakdown and Bootcamp came to my rescue and reassured me. Flowers Thanks again.

I haven't weighed myself since and I don't plan to. Have taken measurements instead.

SteeleyeStan · 06/01/2014 12:51

I weighed myself and took some measurements (last time was July!) and it wasn't as bad as I feared, luckily. I think gravity's been at work though: I've lost a bit round my neck and boobs and gained the same round my arse. Hmm

My day today:
B: fried eggs and the oily coffee
L: smoked salmon, salad veggies, coffee with double cream
D: lamb stew (cheap bony and fatty lamb, swede, turnip, leek, herbs)

My DH is luckily great. He's actually really happy with low carb foods, since he generally loves meat and veggies. He's watched me struggle with different kinds of diets in the past, so he's really supportive now he can see this works and isn't torture. We have a deal that any carby rubbish he wants he eats at work.

Right this is seriously weird!
I had 2 scrambled eggs with some cheese melted in for breakfast......and now Im not hungry! I don't think that has ever happened to me before.
Usually I'm fine until I start eating and then I'm constantly hungry.....is that the effect of the carbs or have I tricked my mind into believing it is?

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2014 13:09

I slightly worry about DH when I do this WOE. He is happy to eat and cook high fat/low carb food, but he still continues to drink apple juice and eat cornflakes. I wonder if the benefits may turn into negatives given the fact that he still eats some high carb food? Or do you think this will be ok?

He won't stop with the apple juice as it comes from our own apples and is really delicious, and puts our apples to good use. Plus he works hard each year collecting and transporting it all to be juiced. But it is just sugar!

Mlig · 06/01/2014 13:13

Sorry I keep popping up and asking random questiWhat's mly?

Mlig · 06/01/2014 13:14

Oops I just posted that message..

I know I keep popping up asking rand

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2014 13:15

Whoknows, not feeling hungry all the time is one of the great things about this WOE. Carbs make you hungry because of a sugar spike and subsequent dip.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2014 13:15

Grin Mlig

LittleMissDisorganized · 06/01/2014 13:17

I've been reading loads, I think DH is a bit bored of the subject and I've not even started yet. Hopefully he'll come round but I'm hoping to use here for support (if I'm nibbly/sad/angy/bouncy/upset/bored - any excuse, which is how I got in to this situation)

However. I've been in plaster and in a wheelchair and housebound for 6 weeks. I am really fed up and not in control of the cooking or feeling like an independent human being. I might be allowed to walk when I go and see the surgeon on Wednesday. I really really hope I will be. I need to take the cooking back, it's usually my job and I cook much more from scratch than DH has time or inclination to. I'm trying not to be whingy but it has been very difficult to cope with not being able to do anything, including dress myself or carry a plate/bowl of food or reach the kitchen properly. However, the surgery was to correct a deformity in my left leg that meant I was quite disabled so if it has worked it will be well worth it.

I've written a list, and I've upped my water intake, and I'm going to plan a meal out or two at the weekend because I haven't been able to go out of the flat for so long. And start on Monday, with a good understanding and motivation and just gradually building up my activity levels, no need to do everything all at once. Famous last words.

Sorry that was so long Blush just needed to get out where I'm at.

Mlig · 06/01/2014 13:19

Ahh bloody kids! I'm on my phone and my lg keeps pressing post message!

What I'm trying to say, is sorry I keep asking random questions, I'm just trying to get my head round it all, I'm so up for starting this, although I'm struggling to cut down on the carbs just now so I think I'll have to be cold turkey next week, I am a bit all or nothing...

What kind of cream cheese can you have? And is it only natural yoghurt you can have? I don't like natural, or cream :-(

And re the boobs and babies head, that proper made me laugh! I have enormous boobs that were not only bigger than babies head, but my friend used to wear my nursing bras on her head too lol

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2014 13:24

full fat cream cheese and sorry, flavoured yoghurt is high in carbs

fingers crossed for you Littlemiss

Mlig · 06/01/2014 13:32

Lol!
And I can cope without the yoghurt, but I love Philadelphia I might just eat a tub of that per meal! Lol
Can you have the chive and garlic ones too?

SteeleyeStan · 06/01/2014 13:44

Mlig somewhere in the spreadsheets (?) someone recommended adding some pure vanilla powder to full fat natural yoghurt. It's really yummy, if you want yoghurt but aren't a fan of the plain taste. I've ordered 100% vanilla powdered online, but I think someone said you can buy it in Sainsburys too.

Ilisten2thesoundofdrums · 06/01/2014 13:49

re the yoghurt if you can't stand it plain you can flavour it with orange, lemon or whatever other extract you can find in the supermarket with the cake ingredients. There are some which do not have sugar - there is even a chocolate extract. Also you can buy powdered vanilla pods in waitrose which are sugar free.

I am just tucking into my lunch as I read this. I have a huge plateful of salad ( gem lambs lettuce and ruby chard half an avacado and 3 cherry tomatoes) with a piece of salmon with lemon peper olive oil and a spoon of Jersey extra thick cream) that I cooked in the microwave using "roasting bags" from the supermarket - the crinkly plastic ones- they have plastic tags to go in the microwav- fantastic way to cook at work!) - All the jices from the bag are making a great salad dressing.

bewitched I'm sure that there were some low carbers with colesteral issues this time last year and they found that contrary to all expectations their colesterol went down - you might want to search for the last January bootcamp threads
