'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

My name is Jax and I fell off the wagon months ago, and bejeezus it is showing - everywhere, the chinS, the bellies, the thighs, the ankles.

And guess what? Ive stopped smoking, so have had sugar craving for 3 months and am only just turning a corner. Yes, Im healthier, I breathe better but Im a fatty again.

Just tried on a dress that I was going to wear to my sisters wedding on 1/3 and it looks hideous. A tent is what I will have to wear. Sad

Please help me get back to LC WoE, I was doing brilliantly, was even helping people who wanted to learn to LC. Im scared, Im anxious and I need you all to help me.

DurhamDurham · 09/01/2014 20:09

I've been feeling sick today, a bit dizzy too. Hoping that will pass soon.
Today I have eaten:
B-black coffee, water, boiled egg
L- avocado, baby plum tomatoes and some thin slithers of Parmesan, water
D-3 ( yes 3!) mackerel followed by Greek yoghurt with a spoonful of double cream. Water.

I haven't snacked but an really craving something sweet. I will drink more water instead.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 09/01/2014 20:20

If I start feeling dizzy, I have some vegetable bouillon made as a drink and that does the trick - gets the salt in.

I didn't realise how little salt I ate normally until I tracked a couple of days eating on MFP - I don't eat ready meals and cook most things from scratch but until bootcamp, I never added salt unless in stock/cheese/soy.

Now I'm really enjoying salt, along with butter! Yum yum.

Another positive thing- I have awful skin normally. Acne since my teens and scarring cystic lumps since I had children. I was working myself up to giving up the the myriad of skincare lotions and potions that I've been trying and going to the Dr... but my spots have gone!

Today:
B- sausage and egg muffin IPD
S- (because breakfast was at 6:45 and lunch wasn't until 2) total yoghurt with vanilla power and orange essence (yum yum yum)
L- ham and cheese salad with vinaigrette
D- sausgages and celeriac boulangere (sp?), salad.

Oops, sausages twice! They are black farmer or simply sausages though.

EvaTheOptimist · 09/01/2014 20:25

Jax you can do it! Surely giving up carbs is way easier than giving up smoking? You've done the hard one of those.

MrsHughJarse · 09/01/2014 20:33

JaxTeller - come on back - lots of newbie low carbers like me need lots of advice - and sounds like you have lots of knowledge .
If anyone ( is old enough!) remembers Rosemary Connelly ....? I feel like she is about to arrest me ! Grin

ChesterDrawers · 09/01/2014 20:36

Dear God, I've just made the IPD salmon and feta bake and while it was lovely, what a dairy overload! I couldn't finish and actually feel a bit queasy now. Can't wait to see what crazy cheese dreams I have tonight Hmm

Today I've had:
B: scrambled eggs with butter
L: left over cottage pie
S: ham and philly roll ups
D: IPD salmon and feta bake, courgettes, leeks and mushrooms fried in butter

BIWI · 09/01/2014 20:52

Today:

B - 2 x boiled eggs
L - 1/2 can Sainsbury's Chicken Tikka Massala (I never thought I'd buy canned curry, but it's surprisingly nice, and at 6.6g carbs for the half can, not too 'expensive' - at least not before we get into Bootcamp!), with iceberg lettuce and spinach salad, with a vinaigrette dressing
S - cheese, macadamias
D - pork chop, fried in oil, with spicy cauliflower 'rice' and red cabbage braised in butter with onion and raspberry vinegar

Oh, and 2 sneaky gins because I'm celebrating passing my 3 month probationary period in my new job Grin

I just put one of DD 's chips in my mouth without thinking .... And I actually SPAT it out !!! I have been possessed .........

PseudoBadger · 09/01/2014 20:52

Durham it looks to my inexperienced eye that you need to up your fat and salad/vegetables?

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 09/01/2014 20:54

Jax- just wanted to say congratulations on giving up smoking. If you've done LC once, it bet you can do it again Grin

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 09/01/2014 20:54

I bet

BIWI · 09/01/2014 20:57

Durham - PseudoBadger is right! Where is your veg/salad in your evening meal?

OP posts:
PseudoBadger · 09/01/2014 20:58

Congratulations BIWI :)

Today:

B - 2 x boiled eggs
S - Greek yoghurt
L - tuna mayo with spinach, little gem and cucumber and Pizza Express dressing
S - marinaded artichokes (yum!), cheddar
D - chicken kebabs, same salad but with avocado too

Tea and milk x 3, coffee and cream, water and some PLJ with sparkling water (not sure I like it)

BIWI are Herta frankfurters ok for bootcamp? I think they are 2g per 100g.

DurhamDurham · 09/01/2014 21:02

I think so too PseudoBadger but I'm struggling because I don't have a big appetite and I find it hard to eat of I'm not hungry. I start off the day thinking I'm going to eat less carbs and more fat but then as the day goes but I worry about all the fat I'm eating( while being proud of not eating carbs).
I just have to change my mind set, hopefully I will get there.

projectbabyweight · 09/01/2014 21:07

DurhamDurham - is this your first week? I feel the same nerves about losing weight eating all this fat. Time will tell, first weigh-in on Monday!

PseudoBadger · 09/01/2014 21:10

Durham I think I would have done this:

B-black coffee (with cream?) water, boiled egg (with salted butter?)
L- avocado, baby plum tomatoes (with mayo or vinaigrette?) and some thin slithers of Parmesan, water
D-3 ( yes 3!) mackerel (with some veg, hot or salad with dressing or butter) followed by Greek yoghurt with a spoonful of double cream.

DurhamDurham · 09/01/2014 21:13

I will try. Usually I'm very good with eating veg/salad, I think it's all just so new. I'm so busy focusing on less carbs and panicking about more fat that it's all gone out the window.

Tomorrow will be better! Thanks for tips, advice and support,
Grin

heliumheart · 09/01/2014 21:15

Just checking in:

Breakfast - some F/F yoghurt, in too much of a rush
Lunch - hmm. Went to local amazing Indian, chicken curry, no rice but vegetable thoran, had a couple of little fried lentilly things. No wine even though I was bloody stressed.
Dinner - boeuf bourgignonne, made with 1 tbsp flour between serving for 6, beef, mushrooms, bacon, shallots, wine, beef stock... so hopefully not too bad. One glass of red wine due to unexpected visitor and sorely lacking willpower.

I'm actually feeling pretty good about all this. This morning showed a 3 pound loss from Monday, but I may have put some of that on today as i haven't been perfect by any means. I have had such a shit year last year, am so bloody relieved to be able to mark the new year (and my one year anniversary of separating) with a genuine sense of relief that it's all over and wanting to start anew. I'm even managing to cope with the stressful divorce stuff with a bit more of a 'que sera sera' attitude.

Chester - I have had that salmon and feta bake before. I agree with you. Whilst we're not meant to count calories it contains a heinous amount of (dairy) calories for one person. I had an argument with a bunch of people on the IPD forum once (because the first rule of the forum is you can never criticise anything about IPD...Wink) because I proposed the bonkers suggestion that 1800 calories for one meal for one person might, just might, be excessive.

LittleMiss - someone might have beaten me to it but I'd steer clear of soy, there's quite a lot of evidence that apart from anything else the plant oestrogens mimic our oestrogen and cause all sorts of problems for women. I think fermented soy, as has traditionally been eaten, is slightly different.

DurhamDurham · 09/01/2014 21:15

Projectbabyweight, yes it's my first week and I'm finding it touch. I understand the science/methodology behind it all but when I'm eating the fat I just want to shout at myself "YOU'RE EATING FAT!"

SteeleyeStan · 09/01/2014 21:18

Congratulations BIWI, and Jax well done on giving up smoking! Thanks
I counted my macros today out of curiosity and seems I only ate 10g carbs. Maybe that's why I've been feeling so crap. More veggies for me!
Sipping mineral water now and planning to make a gluten free, not-overly-carby pizza for tomorrow, for DH's pizza cravings.

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 09/01/2014 21:21

Durham - what about "YOU'RE EATING FAT, YUM YUM?" Grin

In my pre bootcamp reading, one of the thing that's stuck is that getting too many of your calories from protein will make you feel awful and also provoke an insulin spike. Fat doesn't do this.

(not that I've got this sussed yet at all, but hey!)

BIWI · 09/01/2014 21:22

PLEASE DON'T WORRY ABOUT EATING FAT!

Trust all of us who have done this before/are still doing it. Honestly, it isn't an issue.

OP posts:
BIWI · 09/01/2014 21:23

Which reminds me. That's something else you will have to get used to from next week. I will be shouting at you. A lot.

It is Bootcamp, after all Grin

OP posts:
BIWI · 09/01/2014 21:23

AND STOP WORRYING ABOUT CALORIES!
