'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

BIW, other seasoned LCers,
I know that the IPD recommends taking various supplements whilst on this WOE... what do people here think about that. Do you take any and if so, what?
TIA.

EvaTheOptimist · 09/01/2014 21:32

Fat really doesn't make you fat (unless you eat it along with carbs)

Sugar makes you fat

You should see the butter I ladle into my cooking... and I weigh the least I have weighed for YEARS.

DurhamDurham · 09/01/2014 21:41

Thanks BIWI..... I will do it , I will. Permission to shout at me lots if I start worrying about eating the fat!

StuntNun · 09/01/2014 22:07

I just take a multivitamin with fish oil Queenie. I can't remember who came up with the analogy that a vitamin is like car insurance. You think you're a good driver and you won't crash your car but you take out car insurance just in case you aren't quite as good a driver as you think.

BIWI · 09/01/2014 22:08

Oh don't you worry, Durham - there will be lots of shouting. I shall also be getting my big stick out and waving it around A LOT! Grin

Queen - I'm not personally convinced about the IPD argument that you need all those supplements. I've certainly not really bothered. My view is that if you're getting your carbs from veg/salad, and you're eating 'clean' meat and fish, you should be fine.

BIWI.....if you drink gin next week I will beat you with your own stick! GrinGrinGrin

ChippingInWadesIn · 09/01/2014 22:27

BIWI - more fantastic news - not that there was ever any doubt you moose!! Wine

Whoknowswhocares · 09/01/2014 22:36

I'm struggling massively with the water.
Are there any non-cheating ways round it? I was thinking herb tea might be an ok substitute

CrabbyWinterBottom · 09/01/2014 23:33

HughJ and Calamity I love your enthusiasm! Grin

Congrats BIWI and Jax. Flowers

Rup hope the tooth extraction wasn't too dreadful.

I have nothing of any use to contribute as I am still a massive carby twat. Am scaling down the carbs from tomorrow in preparation for Monday. Am preparing to be very very Blush at my weigh in. Hmm

This time I'm going to get down to 10st 5lb!

CrabbyWinterBottom · 09/01/2014 23:34

Who herbal teas (unsweetened, obviously) are fine, but be careful because a lot of herbs are diuretics and will make you pee more.

ChippingInWadesIn · 09/01/2014 23:38

Crabby - I had to look at the scales with one eye closed Grin I was prepared for it to be a few pounds worse than it actually was, so it was a bit GrinShockSad Good luck!

Rup missed the bit about your tooth - ouch :(

Mary - I'd fly over if I could - I fear you might need some proper hand holding Grin

Actually, although it was 'bad enough' it wasn't 'as bad' as I feared it might be and I was a(planned) Massive Carby Twat over Christmas.

Think light!!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 10/01/2014 01:00

Flowers BIWI for your job.

FlowersLittleMiss it must be fab to have your leg back Grin

Flowers with knobs on Jax I'm trying to get off fags too, bloody well done Smile

OK questions, do I have to eat if I'm not hungry, why is it bad to pee more (re the herbal teas), am I supposed to be constipated on day 3/4 Blush.
And, if I don't actually want to lose much weight - half a stone - am I barking up the wrong lettuce. I just want to lose the tum and a bit off the thighs. So I can wear a something surprising as mum of bride in May.

I drank all the water yesterday, but had salmon in olive oil, lemon juice and pepper, and spinach, courgette and brocolli with garlic and butter for supper. Felt very bleurgh afterwards and struggled to finish it - just too rich.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/01/2014 07:17

Morning Brew

Fab news BIWI. Huzzah!!

And maryz, good luck, I got all brave and did that yesterday and now I know exactly where I am.

heliumheart · 10/01/2014 07:37

Wishing you luck Maryz. If it's terrible, then on the plus side at least you've already decided to do something about it. In my hefty experience too it may mean big early losses if the weight gain has been relatively recent.

I'm feeling slightly odd after somebody randomly 'liked' a rare nice photo of me on FB from two years ago. I was several stone (at least four!) lighter. It sparked a flurry of FB activity from well-wishers who know I've been through the mill this past year, wishing me well for 2014. Looking at that person feels like looking at somebody completely different. That person wore nice clothes, looked young fit and healthy and I feel like Jabba the Hut in a sweatshirt.

googoogoggles · 10/01/2014 07:41

Yes, good luck maryz best get it over with...
Think this will be great way to shift bit of weight from yr stomAch bewitched Think most people start losing weight there first

Thai fish cakes last night reAlly good, then decaff coffee to hv cream fix!

googoogoggles · 10/01/2014 07:48

Cross post...
You'll get back there helium - you can't change what's hPpened but as you say you're doing something now to get back on trAck and there's lots of great support on here
Right, cream in coffee beckons.... I am developing a new addiction aren't i?!

heliumheart · 10/01/2014 08:12

I'm on my second cream in coffee already :)

Thanks. I'm feeling quite raring to go actually, very odd because I've had lots of false starts over recent months. It's funny how the mojo strikes, isn't it?

ziggiestardust · 10/01/2014 08:21

Right. I had a spectacular fail this week, and I'm getting back on the wagon now.

Started off with a small pot of ff natural yog this morning. Lunch will be chicken salad drenched in ff dressing. I will decide on dinner later. I stocked up my fridge last night, and it's full to bursting with LC snacks and meals ready to go.

One meal at a time, I'm going to do this.

Thank you for the vanilla powder suggestion, I will try and order some later Smile

Lovecat · 10/01/2014 08:30

I've been trying but failing to cut down this week (Christmas treats left over that the family won't let me chuck keep calling) , but as I'm something of an all or nothing personality I reckon I'll just suffer cold turkey next week. Am also still suffering from proper flu so this'll be fun! Grin

On the plus side I have bought lots of nice low carb high fat food so am all geared up. Just got to get new batteries for the scale...

Plonkysaurus · 10/01/2014 09:01

So I'm on day five and it's nice to be out the other side of the carb flu. Stick with it everyone who's struggling. It's amazing to be full of energy and not hungry! I'm sleeping better and everything, though I've noticed when I get tired I get really tired, really fast. Anyone else? I even managed to go swimming yesterday.

On the other hand I think my sudden 2lb loss on Wednesday morning was at least a pound of natural fluctuation. On thursday morning I was a pound and a half heavier, and this morning it's gone down again, so this still shows a downward trend. Am going to try not to weigh myself every day, maybe jut twice a week from now on! Sadly I think I'm going to have to limit the cheese and milky coffees a bit more, but I can live with that now my appetite's more under control.

So yesterday I had...

b- 2 creamy coffees, flaxseed muffin
l - frittata with bacon, broccoli, mushrooms, green pepper and edam cheese
s - small chicken drumstick
d - salmon fillet with veg and courgette noodles.

Ruprekt · 10/01/2014 09:17

ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedMy poor mouth.....dental pain sucks! ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

Did not eat last night.....was too sore.

Had tea and a coffee with cream this morning.

Also had a big bowl blueberries with yoghurt and cream. They were 30p and dated back to the middle of December but were fine and delicious. I didnt want to throw them away and needed to eat them before real Bootcamp.

CalamityKate · 10/01/2014 09:18

Day 3.

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon for breakfast. So full now!

Headache gone.

Silly question but is anyone else feeling warmer?? I'm such a cold soul as a rule but I've just turned the heating down and I wasn't even cold when I got out of bed or even doing the school run despite it being icy here this morning! Is the fat keeping me warmer??

CalamityKate · 10/01/2014 09:21

....I know its early days but I feel so much thinner!! Probably because I'm not bloated. My tum was much flatter this morning. DH was laughing at me preening in the mirror, naked, turning this way and that Grin

See normally I'd be far too cold for naked early morning preening!
