'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

pysllium husks work for constipation

ElBombero yes, hijuice and ribena are not suitable for low carbers... we were just discussing the move to lower sugar content in foodstuffs (good thing) with the likelihood that sugars will be replaced with artifical sweeteners (not a good things) and the fact that squash for example is hard enough to get with sugar rather than sweeteners...

I do buy hijuice from waitrose plus tesco sells 2 or 2 sugar not sweetener flavours. Not so keen on ribena as it's too sweet for even my ds1 who insists squash has to be strong... bleurgh I hate the stuff(!)

Ok... end of off topic subject... as you were! ??

Ziggie - one of the things that does come up regularly is that LCing helps with mood swings and emotional eating. (I think it's the yummy fat!) If you are feeling low in the evenings, try having lc snacks - suasages, celery with pate/cheese, ham spread with mayo and rolled up. Don't buy crisps or choc or biscuits. As you progress with LC you should start to feel satiated and less need to snack.

And yes, Ribena is almost totally sugar/carbs

BIWI · 09/01/2014 13:27

Cheese and olives make lovely, low carb snacks. Celery and cucumber are great if you want some crunch.

I agree with Collywobbles. Jeremy vine discussion about the perils of sugar worth finding on iplayer later for anyone interested.

Also - whoever recommended Lidls as good for the bootcamp - thankyou, great tip - I have just come back laden with super perfect low carb goodies - good priced fresh meet, nice veg, french cheeses, lovely big olives and greek full fat yog.

ziggiestardust · 09/01/2014 13:43

I like the sound of frittata for breakfast Smile

captain I'm not even hungry, I just want the crunch and the taste for comfort Sad which is bloody ridiculous! There's just so much going on for me, I just feel a bit lost and that feels familiar and nice.

The plus is that my meals for LC are sorted and I'm enjoying and never hungry. I need to knock this habit of the odd handful of crisps on the head for next week now.

Ilisten2thesoundofdrums · 09/01/2014 14:20

Ziggy re the crunch try pork scratchings as they are LC and might satisfy the crunch and salt cravings.

For the chocolate how about yohurt with vanilla powder and some lemon or orange essance for something that "smells" sweet to trick your mind into beliving its having something naughty?

Ruprekt · 09/01/2014 14:31

Had leftover sausages and cauli cheese at 10.30 this morning.

Pate wrapped in lettuce.

Am about to have my tooth extracted.....think it will be a light dinner! SmileSmile

LucyVFood · 09/01/2014 14:59

I'm feeling good today! Even getting used to these vast quantities of water, although I'm thirstier than ever before, what's that all about??

Does anyone use My Fitness Pal? If so would you like to be friends? Blush Sounds a bit desperate Grin I find MFP quite useful though.

BIWI · 09/01/2014 16:19

If you're still thirsty, you need to make sure you're replenishing your electrolytes - so salt, potassium and magnesium. Put more salt in/on your food, and eat stuff like avocado, salmon and spinach.

Carb flu symptoms hit me today, too. No energy at all after feeling fine yesterday. Hope it's gone by tomorrow as I've loads to do and just want to rash on sofa. Food today
Coffee with cream
Ham and philly 'rolls'
Hard boiled eggs mashed with butter
Going to make Thai salmon fishcakes (from IPD book) later with big green leaf salad with avocado (as no veg so far today) - maybe a bit too low carb - Hence feeling pants!
Hope you're ok after tooth extraction Ruprekt!

Hi everyone, I've been doing LC for 3 days now but am finding it really difficult to find a breakfast that doesn't make me feel sick. So far I've tried eggs, greek yoghurt and cheese and ham and I felt really sick for a couple of hours after each one. Is it the amount of fat maybe? Really don't know what to try tomorrow as I really don't want to feel sick again all morning! Any suggestions for something light but filling?

PseudoBadger · 09/01/2014 16:42

How have you done the eggs?

CheeseAndFriedMushrooms · 09/01/2014 16:43

Marking place to read later on. Can't really LC at moment but want to see what carbs I can cut down on.

CandyKate · 09/01/2014 16:59

Scrambled eggs cooked in butter.

BIWI · 09/01/2014 17:19

Why not try eating something leftover from dinner the night before?

The other thing you could do is to leave eating your breakfast until a little later in the morning.

Are you used to eating breakfast?

Sorry I know I keep going on but this is heaven! :)

Bacon and eggs for BF.
got peckish late morning and had some cheese. Wasn't hungry for lunch so skipped it.
Dinner - chicken breast, beaten thin, dipped in egg and Parmesan and fried in butter. Pile of salad with more Parmesan and Mayo.
It was GORGEOUS!

And the best thing is I am not craving sweet things. Even when I was really hungry for dinner, passing the chocs/Puds etc didn't make my stomach cramp and my mouth water like normal. Just made me keener for dinner :)

I shall have a lovely coffee with cream a bit later.

Still can't quite believe I'll lose weight....

CalamityKate · 09/01/2014 17:24

I'm still struggling to drink enough water; I just don't really get that thirsty!

ziggiestardust · 09/01/2014 17:43

googoogoogles were they oopsie rolls? Were they any good?

LittleMissDisorganized · 09/01/2014 17:52

I can waaaaalk!!!
Cast off, got an air boot to walk in, and considered I haven't even stood up on both feet for 6 weeks - I'm doing ok, walking in the house but with pain, and managing a few steps or curbs - really pleased.

I have noticed that uncontrolled pain is improved by sugar. I noticed that ages back, and I considered it preferable to going up on my pain medication. But now, I have to say, it's clearly not working for me and I'll have to just be honest with how my pain is and if I need further medical input then ask for it.

I can, only just, perch and cook and so I can manage this. DH is supportive, but not joining in - his very physical job means he doesn't seem to gain weight regardless of what he eats and before I started talking about this he didn't know what a carbohydrate was!

Anyone else got advice on whether unsweetened soya milk is ok?

ChesterDrawers · 09/01/2014 18:33

No advice on the milk LittleMiss but wanted to say congratulations on getting your cast off, you must be so pleased Flowers

tenementfunster · 09/01/2014 18:38

Just an observation, but i have found my Pmt and bloat terrible this month, I wonder if due to all the Xmas crap?
In a vicious circle type of way, I have just eaten a load of choc.
Ah well this is the pre-boot camp week I suppose!

Suzymoo9 · 09/01/2014 18:41

CandyKate, I have also been feeling really sick. I found the Onken full fat yogurt much less sickly than the Greek one & have had berries with it this week (as it's not strict bootcamp yet) which helped. It works for me for breakfast.

Today I nearly fainted so had toast!! with butter and jam (the first bread I have had in 10 days)

But sticking to LC well otherwise - like others I can't believe I will weigh less on Monday (although I did lose a pound last week)!

Even had egg mayonnaise in a lettuce leaf today for a snack, do miss carbs though.

BIWI · 09/01/2014 19:44

Brilliant, LittleMiss! You must be so pleased/relieved Flowers

Suzymoo - why did you eat toast and jam?! Why not eat something low carb instead? All that you're doing is undoing the hard work you've done so far. What is it that you miss about carbs?

I just felt a bit hungry; not starving but I would have been by bedtime so I had some philly on a couple of slices of ham....is that ok?
