'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Daily Fail headlines today....'sugar is the new tobacco!'AngryAngryAngry

Food giants have to slash the sugar by 30% to stop the rise in obesity!

At last. SmileSmile

BIWI · 09/01/2014 07:46

Yeah, but they still demonise fat. All that will happen is that people will switch to artificially sweetened stuff. And that is still the preserve of the big manufacturers.

However, it's a step in the right direction!

The tiredness should wear off in a few days Woolfey – any tiredness related to a change of diet that is! Remember last time the feeling of wading through treacle by around 3pm but remember feeling great after I'd got through it...
Yesterday, seemed mostly to be eating CREAM.
B Coffee with CREAM x 3 (over course of morning)
L Mushrooms fried in butter with bit of CREAM
D Salmon grilled (with knob of butter) and (big) veg stir fry (spinach, brocolli, bit of spring onion, ginger, chilli and red onion)s and some soy sauce (which is probably too sweet for BC)
Blackberries with Total and tiny bit of CREAM
Think I'm subsituting my carb fix with a cream fix, so if it turns out I've a problem with dairy I'm in big trouble Grin
Feel okay so far but obviously is BC Light, not BC proper...
Still not enough water but better than yesterday
A lot of jasmine tea...

googoogoggles · 09/01/2014 08:23

Thanks BIWI by the way for doing another BC! It has really changed my whole approach to food and I know I feel so much better if I stay on this WOE.
Thanks too in advance to Willie for dealing with that spreadsheet – seem to have the most names yet!

Meh, still feeling crappy. I'm really surprised - thought I was an old hand and my system would be all used to LC etc. Blush But I'm headachy, nauseaus, swollen and constipated. I even ended up feeling absolutely starving last night, so had a snack of greek yoghurt. It's a bit weird - my blood glucose seems fine and stable. I guess my body's just got used to the slightly higher amount of carbs pre-holidays, and then the carby Xmas and NY really messed things up.

I've got temptations for tomorrow. Meeting friends for a catch up in a lovely cafe, and DH wanting a pre-Bootcamp beer and pizza night...

Today's foods will be:
B: Fried eggs and coffee with coconut oil
L: Leftover salmon, fresh spinach; avocado and/or cheese if I feel hungry.
D: Pork chops and cauliflower mash.

daisychicken · 09/01/2014 08:26

I'm glad that sugar content is to be cut but I'm worried about squash that currently has sugar not artifical sweeteners... most food we buy, we can avoid artifical sweeteners but with squash it's becoming harder and harder to get without sweeteners... I know that's not a problem for us but it is a problem for DH, my kids, people who can't or don't want artifical sweeteners in their drinks......

SayraT · 09/01/2014 08:30

I have been trying to drink more water and have been drinking around 2.5 - 3 litres per day (and spending all my time running to the loo - I assume that I will get more used to the volume of water and not need to wee so much!).

I wondered if anyone else felt more thirsty now they are drinking more?! I do and I wondered why, previously I would have drunk around 2 litres of fluid per day (that includes green tea x2 at work).

Yesterday I ate:

B: Spoonful of Total yogurt (not really hungry in morning, more hungry at night)
L: Frittata type thing with mushrooms, chicken and bacon with rocket and parmesan salad
S: Cucumber and carrot sticks
D: Broccoli soup then pork meat balls with courgette spaghetti

Hi there
I'm signed up for boot camp but also trying to start this week. I did LC eating in 2012 and lost a stone and a half, but then fell back into the sugar trap.
Thought I'd share two top tips which help me keep on track:

  1. Frittata.... This for breakfast helps as I make it in advance and chop off a chunk to have with ham, and because its a chunk of something solid it feels similar to having a bit of toast, if you know what I mean. I make it with lots of veg and some Stilton, and its very tasty. And I don't really like eggs normally.
  2. romaine lettuce or chicory leaves can be used instead of crackers or bread when you need something to put pate or something spreadable onto.

Looking fwd to trying to make this the year that my cravings for evening sugar highs get under control.
Good luck....

Daisychicken - I get the high juice squashes from Waitrose which are free of sweeteners and taste delicious. Also agree re squashes with sweeteners, also they taste disgusting!

gussiegrips · 09/01/2014 09:28

Is there a link to The Rules, the spreadsheet, and the recipe thread?

Cannae find any of them.

I've been playing with this for 3 days, and, stupidly, stood on the scales this morning. I've put on 5lbs.

This has to be some sort of record.

encyclogirl · 09/01/2014 09:31

Good morning everyone :)

Had some naice ham for brekkie with a bit of celery.

Lunch is a tuna, avocado salad.

Dinner is a stir fry of some sort.

I liked this Instagram pic of a hollowed out cucumber filled with chicken salad by Piri Weepu, YUM!

projectbabyweight · 09/01/2014 10:11

daisychicken - also Ribena I believe.

All going very well here. Still not fully convinced I'll have lost any weight on this, so Monday will be interesting.

ElBombero · 09/01/2014 10:14

Carb flu :( how long does this last? Feel rotten. Any tips to ease it a little, apart from scoffing sugar?

MrsHughJarse · 09/01/2014 10:27

still not hungry Smile- still loving my food for the first time in years. Absolutely devouring big salads with DRESSING on instead of low calorie miserable food for years.

so..... I have been on a diet for 20 years on and off.... have been to weight (take all your jewelry off to be weighed)watchers, , slimming (just live on sins)world, spent months on Vi shakes, slim fast or similar.... How much might this have cost over all that time.? I suspect £££££ Angry and this is free and yummy and it works... Shock

I think it should be 'lady' BIWI or dame or whatever is the best !

PS - my 'test' jeans came nearly past my thighs today - and thats huge progress.

blizy · 09/01/2014 12:15

I think I I carb flu, feeling very shakey, dizzy/spaced out, nausea sand have a headache. Drinking loads of water to help.

ElBombero · 09/01/2014 12:24

Ribena / high juice might not have artificial sweeteners it surely be full of sugar/carbs?

CalamityKate · 09/01/2014 12:46

Loving bacon and eggs for breakfast! So filling.

Amazed at how low carb strong cheddar is. Less than one carb per 100g! And 100g is loads!

ziggiestardust · 09/01/2014 12:49

Oooooh, just found this thread! I've been going since Jan 1st 'lower carb', but since Tuesday night I've had problems, tbh.

I'm moving job, house and area and I'm really really stressed out. I need tricks for when I feel low. Mostly in the evenings (I'm popping to the doc next week actually, because I'm starting to feel a bit too low a bit too often), and then I just want a packet of crisps or a chocolate, and I'm ashamed to say I've given in.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

HumphreyCobbler · 09/01/2014 12:55

Blizy - you may have depleted potassium etc. I would up your salt intake or use some lo salt if you have any. Drinking lots of water and suddenly not eating any processed food have have an initial effect on your levels.

HumphreyCobbler · 09/01/2014 12:55

also eat some potassium rich food like avocado

fizzly · 09/01/2014 13:04

Thanks for the tips re my headache. It could well have been salt related as I don't tend to add salt to my food except a little in cooking. I am happy to say that after feeling awful last night I did not wake up over night with another horrific headache and am feeling a LoT better today although still bunged up but I can cope with that.

Today is as follows
B: 2 eggs
Lunch: ham and cheese salad
Dinner I think will be steak in a cream and mushroom sauce with cabbage and cauli rice.

Actually feeling a little slimmer today already - probably in my head as I won't weigh again til Monday but altogether today feels a lot better than yesterday.

HamstaParadise · 09/01/2014 13:10

Hello! First chance to post but started on the 6th. Made spanish tortilla (with celeriac instead of potato) with chorizo for lunch. It was amazing!

Sorry to hear things are hard for you atm Ziggie, I've only been LC since monday so I've got no advice... sure someone will be able to help though!
