'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Carb flu? Wondered why I felt all coldly but not a proper cold - thanks!

ChesterDrawers · 08/01/2014 21:05

Checking in, good day but, by god, was I craving a nice glass of red tonight.

B: eggs in clouds, sausage (1.1 carbs), mushrooms fried in bacon and sausage fat
L: prawn and avocado salad with lots of olive oil
S: total with cream, orange oil and cinnamon
D: crispy Parmesan chicken nuggets, courgette spaghetti, mushrooms and leeks fried in garlic butter

Have just had a decaff with double cream, rapidly becoming my evening treat.

dementedma · 08/01/2014 21:07

I know there should be no alcohol and its hard for me as I am a fairly heavy drinker. I am trying to do dry January and drinking becks blue no alcohol beer. Will this be allowed?

LucyVFood · 08/01/2014 21:12

BIWI I had about a tablespoon of olive oil on my salad (one whole pepper, about six radishes, six baby sweetcorn)

Then for dinner I steamed the veg (I'd say 100g each of broccoli and cauliflower) and then fried it in about a tablespoon of butter with garlic. It was lush.

We don't have a microwave, but taking oil/vinegar in is a good idea.

Thanks Thanks

Ruprekt · 08/01/2014 21:25

Another good day....need more water though.

B...frittata and yoghurt

L...chicken, salad, melted goats cheese, mayo

D...an amazing cauli/broccoli cheese with pancetta and leeks and served with sausages

Water, tea, coffee with cream

Smile

Evening everyone.

One thing that really strikes my about the woe is how good everything tastes!

I have a really sweet tooth and I was prepared for savoury but fairly dull food... and that's so wrong! Using fats and salt really makes everything sing and I'm not missing the sweet stuff because the savoury tastes so much better.

On the other hand... how long does carb flu take to bog off? I'm on day 6 today and day 1 was the worst tbh. But I've felt really tired all week and I need to feel as if I can go out for a run! I've got to go from very slow 5k to half marathon fit by the summer. Having said that, loosing 2 stone would make running a whole lot easier!

BIWI · 08/01/2014 21:36

dementedma - you have my every sympathy! But, Becks Blue has 3.2g per 275ml bottle. Which is going to add up very quickly. If you're doing dry January, wouldn't you just be better avoiding 'fake' beer anyway?!

Sarah - it will take you a bit of time to adjust to be able to train properly. You should generally be feeling better very soon, but don't expect to be able to train as much as you have been doing for at least a couple of weeks. However, once you're ketogenically-adapted (i.e. burning fat rather than carbs), you will be fine.

Carb flu going on here, or it may be gin withdrawal. Tis not pretty

dementedma · 08/01/2014 21:39

Yeah, biwi I probably would but sick of juice and tea and it has a good bitter taste.
Got to have something or will just end up picking up the wine again.

BIWI · 08/01/2014 21:41

Slimline tonic? I know we say no artificial sweeteners, but it's better that then consuming the carbs or going back to the wine!

Sparkling water with PLJ is also good - nice and sharp, but cold and fizzy.

OP posts:
dementedma · 08/01/2014 21:43

Is plj like roses lime cordial?

FrumpyPumpy · 08/01/2014 21:47

Humphrey the pizza express dressing is 5g carbs per 100ml, and a bottle is 235ml.

BIWI · 08/01/2014 21:52

It's a cordial, but it's lemon (PLJ stands for pure lemon juice) and it doesn't have any sugar added or artificial sweeteners. It has 1.4g carbs per 25 ml serving

still got bad carb flu (I think). Woke at 1am last night with literally the worst headache I've ever had. Convinced myself I was about to keel over and die (melodromatic, moi?), googled it and it sounds like a cluster headache which it might be, or perhaps carb flu? Anyone have cluster headaches or know if carb flu can present like that? Painkillers make no difference whatsoever. Basically mega mega headache behind one eye - lasted a couple of hours. Have been achy and knackered today but not as bad, more general cold-y but I have a feeling this headache is going to return tonight - have an ache in the same place again but not as bad yet.

I thought that all the water would ease headaches but obviously not as I'm not the only one with headaches. I was expecting to feel run down but the strength of this headache was a shock. Fingers crossed it will be over in next day or so - I need more sleep tonight for a start.

Anyway food today mostly good. Tiny transgression this evening as feeling pretty shit.
B: 2 eggs (no butter - we have run out Shock)
L: Spinach and celeriac soup
Snacks: peppers, cheese, cucumbers, a slice of ham
D: A sort of curry thing made from scratch with chicken, pepper, broccoli, carrot and cauli rice on the side, sauce made from creme fraiche, cheese, herbs and spices.

Transgression: 2 teaspoons of (sugar free) peanut butter. Has made me feel marginally less sorry for myself!

fizzly · 08/01/2014 22:02

p.s. loads of water too.

On the drinks thing, DH and I (who normally get through a bottle of wine between us at least 4 nights/week) find that sparkling water, really cold and with ice, with a chunk of lemon added, begins to taste like a cocktail, in comparison with all the tap water we drink during the day. I genuinely look forward to cracking open the fizz!

PseudoBadger · 08/01/2014 22:09

Would appreciate an opinion on whether my intake today looks acceptable? It's a lot but I am breastfeeding a tiny one :)

Breakfast Greek yoghurt

Brunch Mushroom, ham, cheese omelette

Lunch Celeriac gratin, 1 slice bacon, cucumber

Snacks Avocado, Olives

Dinner - Baked chicken leg, cheesy leeks with bacon, runner beans, broccoli

Drinks 2x tea with milk, 1x coffee with cream, water

gillyweed · 08/01/2014 22:28

Stupid questions here...

Do tea and coffee count towards your water intake? I have 3 cups of coffee a day and easily 2 litres of water, just wondering if I need more?

Also, I take it in theory if your overweight to begin with this is a perfectly healthy way to eat while pregnant?

And finally, I'm getting my whole family on to this woe - do kids/toddlers need salt added to their diet (my gut says no.)?

thank you!

BIWI · 08/01/2014 22:30

fizzly - sorry to hear about the headache, that sounds awful Sad. It sounds more like a migraine - are you susceptible to those?

Are you making sure that you're eating enough salt? And fat?

Pseudo - that looks fine - assuming you're using plenty of fat to cook with/put on your veg - and that you're drinking enough water!

OP posts:
PseudoBadger · 08/01/2014 22:32

Thanks BIWI, I'm cooking with olive oil and butter usually, and adding butter to veg where possible. I had mayo with the avocado too.

StuntNun · 08/01/2014 22:34

Looks good to me Pseudo, especially if you need another 500 calories a day for breastfeeding. I was eating huge amounts when I started LCing while breastfeeding but over time it has dropped gradually.

Fizzly you may need extra salt as well to help with the headaches. Lo Salt is good as it also contains potassium.

Calamity early on I remember eating roast pork belly and veggies cooked in butter and laughing as this was the best way to lose weight. It is a brilliant WOE for yummy satisfying food.

ChippingInWadesIn · 08/01/2014 22:46

Mary - I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's 'Christmas' not 'easing in' Grin

Plonky - It killed both the craving and my dignity Grin 16lbs to goal weight... I am seriously envious!! Good luck though, I know it's just as hard.

Crabby - 'cramming it in' I might have been guilty of this Blush

PseudoBadger · 08/01/2014 23:14

Thanks Stunt :)

ChesterDrawers · 09/01/2014 06:37

Woolfey I made it up!

Basically, cut chicken breast into strips/nuggets, roll in egg and then Parmesan and shallow fry ( I used about half a cm of groundnut oil) flipping them til they were crispy. You could add spices or herbs to the cheese. I might try a bit of cayenne next time.

They were lovely.
