'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

I am loving this WOE so far, ,lets hope the scales agree with it too!
I have eaten today
B- ham rolls with Philadelphia and Greek yog with a splash of cream
L- leftover low carb cottage pie
D- (spaghetti) courgette bolognaise.
I have had a coffee with cream, green tea, peppermint tea and 2l of water so far. Will probs drink more water and have a peppermint tea after dinner.

Nux · 08/01/2014 17:37

Can I eat chicory? I think it's only 3.4g carb per 100... The 'allowed' veg list is quite short... Are any veggies ok as long as they are around 3g or below or are there other reasons to avoid specific ones?

Nux · 08/01/2014 17:40

Also am I allowed beetroot? gazes at beetroot in fridge

LucyVFood · 08/01/2014 18:18

Am I eating too much veg? Today I've had:

B: Greek Yog
L: Yellow pepper, baby sweetcorn, radishes, boiled eggs and avocado.
D: Pork chops, broccoli, cauliflower.

And if anyone has ideas for pack up lunches I'd be eternally grateful!

Thanks

clarinetV2 · 08/01/2014 18:34

Have been reading through some of these posts. The thing about fat is really interesting. Now if only I craved fatty, oily foods... but I don't! Carbs are what I love! Ah well, maybe I'll come to love butter (bleurgh) and salad dressing (even more bleurgh) in time.

Two questions. What's the position on cheese? If milk isn't allowed, does that mean no cheese either?

Also, are vegetable allowances unlimited on bootcamp so long as they're on the list, or should we count the carbs? In which case (and sorry if this is obvious to everyone else) how much carb are we actually allowed?

Nusoo · 08/01/2014 19:20

Hi there! I am really looking forward to starting this - just wondering - is it still possible to eat too much on this WOE? I'm a fan of big portions Blush and can eat as much (or more) than my dh who is at least a foot taller than me!

CalamityKate · 08/01/2014 19:50

Ok can someone please be kind enough to do me a favour??

Can you work out the carb count of today's food for me please?

B: 3 rashers streaky bacon and an egg
L: 3 scrambled eggs cooked in butter with cheddar cheese in
D: I sirloin steak and mushrooms fried in butter. Salad with a spoonful of mayo.

About 3 cups of coffee with 2 sweeteners, made with a splash of milk (got some cream now to use instead).

I haven't been hungry between meals and I haven't even been tempted to snack.

And I'm going to LOSE weight eating like this? Seriously? I can't get my head round it at all Confused

CalamityKate · 08/01/2014 19:51

.....oh and I had some garlic butter on the steak.

heliumheart · 08/01/2014 20:26

Just checking in at the end of the day. Had a good day food wise and don't feel as though I've gone mental portion-wise.

Breakfast - f/f yoghurt and then..
Brunchy/lunchy - cheese omelette
Dinner - roasted cod with creamy/cheesy leeks - which were delicious and the first time I'd made them.
Drinks - two cups of tea and copious water

Can this even be right? I've had a bloody annoying day dealing with my twin 4 year olds and can't believe I haven't reached for some illicit snack? Hmm

Lavenderhoney · 08/01/2014 20:36

I've been doing badly as I've had a virus and couldn't eat at all or even keep water down for 3 days:(

However, managed a bit of the chicken and roast veg ( no pots) for the dc tonight so fingers crossed.

I also think my new scales are pants. They seem to ignore my weight standing on them and just assume my weight based on looking at me with many layers of clothes on:)

CalamityKate · 08/01/2014 20:37

If this diet works I'll be ecstatic! It is UNHEARD of for me to not be hungry between meals. I'm pretty much ALWAYS hungry as a rule!

I'm a huge carnivore and love butter/the skin off chicken etc.

The most difficult thing for me on most diets is swapping butter for low fat spread, doing without cheese etc.

I'm now sat here stuffed after a delicious dinner - I mean really stuffed - having a gorgeous cup of coffee with cream and it seems too good to be true! That's why I don't trust my own judgement and want someone to confirm that what I've had today is along the right lines!

BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:44

CalamityKate - the only carbs you have eaten today will be in your mushrooms and salad, plus a little from the mayo and the milk.

I would actually say you haven't eaten enough carbs - you could do with a bit more veg; try adding some veg/salad to your lunch.

You don't need to count the carbs but just follow Bootcamp rules. (Which, incidentally, mean also cutting out the artificial sweeteners!)

And yes, you will lose weight eating like that, as long as you do everything else you're supposed to. How much water did you drink today?

OP posts:
heliumheart · 08/01/2014 20:45

Calamity - I haven't worked out your carb count, but that menu looks just fine other than the splash of milk which I have also been doing. I would say you could do with putting more veg in, but I am equally guilty of not doing that and managed just one bit of veg today. I've ordered some salad bits to be delivered tomorrow so I can have that with lunch when otherwise I wouldn't be bothered to cook something up.

Gerrythetootallgiraffeswife · 08/01/2014 20:46

Another good day here, with less desire to snack. That despite a) horrible period pains and pmt, b) a silly early start and c) the worst professional day of my entire career. I'm tired, but only as tired as I'd expect with 6 hrs sleep.

Today I have had:
B: leftover buttery celeriac mash with the fat from frying sausages last night, and a hard boiled egg
L: roast beef salad, loads of dressing, cheese string, hard boiled egg
D: bolognese with courgette and mushrooms and half a block of cheese. Fingers crossed I'm not one of the unlucky ones stalled by dairy- it would make life much trickier!

Weighed myself this evening, and despite the fact that when I weighed on Friday it was in the morning, naked, post wee pre breakfast, and this time was evening fully dressed, I'm 3lb down. And I'm eating cheese!

Cheese!

This WOE is crazy!

Cheese!

BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:47

Nusoo - at the beginning of a low carb diet we don't need to worry about portion sizes. Eat when you're hungry, and eat enough to be satisfied. (It's not carte blanche to just stuff your face though!)

But - two important things. Once you get into it properly, you'll find that your appetite does diminish. Just make sure you're not eating large portions out of habit. And second, when you approach your target weight you will have to pay more attention to what you're eating.

OP posts:
BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:49

clarinetv2 - milk isn't forbidden - it's just something you have to keep an eye on because it gets very carby quite quickly. Cheese, by comparison, is virtually or totally carb-free (some processed cheese like cream or cottage cheeses do have some carbs), but like milk it is dairy - and it's the dairy element that is the issue with these. Many people find that dairy can impede their weight loss

OP posts:
BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:50

Nux chicory is fine but, sadly, beetroot is out. It's way too carby at 9.5g carbs per 100g for boiled and 11.2g carbs per 100g for pickled.

LucyVFood

It depends what quantities you've been eating!

It looks fine to me - but it doesn't look like you've been eating much fat there - have you had butter on your veg? Or any kind of sauce/dressing?

For lunches - I usually buy different sliced cooked meats (ham, corned beef etc) or a can of tuna, and have them with a bag of salad and soe mayo. I have bottles of oil and wine vinegar at work, so make my own dressing. Or, I take leftovers from the previous night's dinner, and heat them up in the microwave. Do you have a microwave?

OP posts:
BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:55

heliumheart looks good, but not enough veg/salad for you either! But good news on the no snacking front Grin

OP posts:
CalamityKate · 08/01/2014 20:55

Thank you BIWI and Helium! I am almost tearful with pleased-ness!! Mind you I still can't get my head round it lol! I suppose I'll believe it when I start seeing results Grin

Questions - what happens if you don't drink enough water?
What happens if you don't eat enough carbs?

BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:56

Lavenderhoney Grin doesn't sound like the scales are you friend! Sorry to hear you haven't been well

OP posts:
BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:57

Cheese, Grommit, cheese Grin

OP posts:
BIWI · 08/01/2014 20:58

If you don't drink enough water you won't lose the weight
If you don't enough carbs you will be eating even more fat and protein. Given that you should be getting your carbs from veg and salad, it also means that you will be missing out on important nutrients - vitamins, minerals and fibre

CalamityKate · 08/01/2014 20:59

I'm so full!!

I'm also shocked how much less bloated I feel after just one day of no bread!
