'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

LittleMissDisorganized have you tried the Lactofree stuff? They do milk (including full fat), cream cheese and cream Smile

heliumheart · 08/01/2014 11:42

Thanks for the support. I know I'm being ridiculous.

BIWI - yesterday I had poached eggs and sausages for breakfast, bolognese with parmesan for lunch (made with high fat mince, but it did have carrot/celery/shallot), and then steak with creamy parmesan cabbage for supper. I don't think I was short of fat - I seemed to scarf almost a whole savoy cabbage with 100g bacon, prob approaching 100ml double cream and parmesan Blush. I am a greedy fecker Grin I drank about 2.5l of water yesterday, could probably have drunk more.

Today I've had my breakfast tea and a cheese omelette, as well as a small amount of F/F natural yoghurt.

Am feeling surprisingly in the zone... :)

PseudoBadger's really helpful post at 10pm on Sunday, listing carb count of veg. says carrots twice - 2.5 and 6.0! Which is correct please?I'm guessing 6 Sad

I can't find anything about pulses, assume they're a no-no?

I really, really want a huge hunk of bloomer! (bread, not knickers!)

Argh - sorry BBB - I keep editing that but forgetting which list I've edited! The difference is between old and young carrots, apparently, but as I have no clue how you tell if a carrot is old or young, I've always assume the higher carb count. The other thing about carrots is that they are very dense, so you can end up eating a lot of carbs if you're not careful.

Helium - nothing wrong with celery or shallots! Did you check the carb count of your sausages? Some of them are shockingly high. The only other thing I would say - although it's probably a bit early at the moment to know - is just keep an eye on how much dairy you're eating. That can impede weight loss for some people.

babyweight is Lactofree better carb-wise? It still has milk proteins in even though the lactose is out so on a brief trial I didn't find it any better, and milk protein explains why cooked is ok. At least that's my understanding... I am not terribly knowledgeable about intolerances/allergies. But if that's a better option I'd re-try it - like I say give it a couple of weeks and the new WOE may have an additional positive effect on my intestines.

Sounds like carb flu to me - eat plenty of fat, drink plenty of water, keep up your salt levels and make sure you're getting potassium and magnesium - avocado, spinach and salmon are all good for that

Ds13 follows a lot of professional rugby players on Instagram. It’s really interesting to see how they eat (they’re always posting pics of their food).

High on protein, high on veggies, high on good fats, extremely low on carbs.

I'm feeling horrible today. I really wasn't expecting any carb flu, since I've been on c. 50g carbs a day since NY already. Oh well, it'll pass. So tired and headachy though...

I got curious about Dr. Briffa's book, since so many have mentioned it. It was only £2.99 on Kindle, so I'm reading it now. Only half-way through, but yes I'd also recommend that.

Today's foods for me:
B: Had yesterday's meatballs with fried slices of courgette (didn't fancy eggs).
L: Boiled egg with mayo, celery sticks with philadephia, coffee with coconut oil and double cream.
D: Salmon or trout (whichever looks nicer in shop) and raw spinach (again if it looks fresh).

Sitting here trying to mealplan and write a shopping list, but brain not working.

BetterTogether · 08/01/2014 13:29

Struggling a bit today. Not carb flu, just super hungry! Is that usual for day 3?

So far today I've had
Two coffees with double cream (one first thing & one mid-morning)
B: chorizo, leeks & eggs scrambled in butter
L: wasn't hungry before lunch so didn't feel like cooking - had Greek yoghurt with double cream, vanilla extract & a small amount of ground almonds (weaning myself off ready for Monday!) but now my stomach won't stop grumbling!!!

Pork belly slices with roasted broccoli tonight which I'm really looking forward to, but think I'm going to need a snack to get me through the afternoon!

Also a bit concerned about how much double cream I'm having - happy with all the other fatty things I'm eating - it's not an anti-fat worry - but I seem to have replaced my emotional eating need with creamy coffees...only 2-3 a day but it soon adds up!

encyclogirl · 08/01/2014 13:34

Hi Maryz, He follows Cian Healy; Piri Weepu; Quade Cooper; James Haskell and loads of others whos names escape me.

Here is Piri Weepu's Instagram account: instagram.com/piriweepu1049

He's the scrum half for the All-Blacks.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 08/01/2014 13:34

Yikes, I couldn't eat that many mushrooms without heaving, and am struggling to get my head round the butter. Is olive oil not as good?

Goodness, don't apologise BIWI, thanks for the answer. No peas, beans lentils etc. then?

I bought the bread but I won't eat it Smile, I had omelette with a bit of chorizo instead.

encyclogirl · 08/01/2014 13:39

Also Maryz ds13 plays rugby and is never, ever, full. Of course he's fit as a butchers dog and can eat whatever the hell he likes.

He is trying to emulate his heroes now though and eat 'clean', but he's prone to a bucket of chicken (with no ramifications) too!

Ooh look at this, never thought of doing this, an omelette roll. From my good friend Peri Weepu...

EvaTheOptimist · 08/01/2014 14:21

Bewitched olive oil is great, if you prefer it. No peas/beans/pulses I', afraid.

BetterTogether I'm pretty sure one of the rules is Eat If You're Hungry. Just make it low-carb. cheese, olives, more greek yoghurt, a quick salad with dressing, cold meat... or even whip up a scrambled egg?

HumphreyCobbler · 08/01/2014 14:25

I felt v spaced out this morning and found that exercise was really difficult energy wise, so I had some low salt to quickly replenish my potassium levels. It worked in about ten minutes.

HumphreyCobbler · 08/01/2014 14:28

Have decorated the cake with chocolate icing and chocolate buttons.

It is like torture Blush

The thing is, I know that another week and I won't be tempted by it! It just came too early.

We will be having his birthday meal at Pizza Express. Had a look at the menu and there are salads, though I bet loads of sugar in the dressing. Wonder if they would let me dress salad myself? Grin

CrabbyWinterBottom · 08/01/2014 14:48

Maryz that's my kind of easing in too! Blush I think I'm trying to cram in all the things I won't be eating for the next few months.

Chipping I can't do moderation either - it's got to be all or nothing for me. I'm looking forward to all the low carb food that I haven't eaten since I became an utter carby twat stepped off the wagon for Christmas.

Humph just take your own salad dressing in a little pot and ask for the salad undressed. They won't know/mind. You're made of sterner stuff than me re the cake - cakes are banned in the Crabby household during bootcamp. If I can't eat them, noone can! Grin I suppose I'll have to make an exception for DD's birthday at the end of the month. Hmm

projectbabyweight · 08/01/2014 14:59

LittleMissDisorganized - I don't think Lactofree is any different carb-wise. Maybe if the milk proteins are a problem for you it wouldn't be preferable to normal stuff. I don't know much about milk protein intolerance either!

HumphreyCobbler · 08/01/2014 15:03

good idea!

MrsHughJarse · 08/01/2014 15:34

I would just like to say thankyou to BIWI .Thanks.

I have been hungry for 20 years.

and now I am not.... and I getting thinner. Its a miracle.

That is all.
