'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Mary - that's exactly the kind of 'easing' I'd do too! Hence Bootcamp Proper!! mainly because I have to have my bloods done soon and I need to sort them out!!!

Here's a really good blog

OP posts:
BIWI · 08/01/2014 06:44

... although

a) it's American, so references American foodstuffs that we might not necessarily have

b) it recommends some artificial stuff - not brilliant

I like the blog, but to my inexperienced eye her meal plan is a bit veg light? Am I right?

Hmm my daily weighing (I know I know) shows me that I am one pound heavier two days into this. The only non-bootcamp thing I've been doing is having two cups of tea a day with a splash of milk and 1/2 tsp sugar. Now having anxieties that This Isn't Going To Work For Me.

Off to read the blog.

Plonkysaurus · 08/01/2014 08:10

Well knock me over with a feather no, I'm still too fat for that to actually work

Yesterday (bc day 2) I ate
B - flaxseed muffin with the tiniest scraping of almond butter
L - two chicken drumsticks and a salad, lots of Mayo
D - coconut turkey curry with broccoli, red pepper, peanut butter and soy.

I had to force dinner into me. Drank so much water and still had a headache/was completely shattered. But I think I'm out the other side of the dreaded carb flu. I woke feeling refreshed and looking forward to the day. And I've lost two pounds in two days! 16 lbs to go to my ideal weight.

captainmummy · 08/01/2014 08:17

Thoise of you 'easing' into bootcamp proper - please be aware that high-fat/low-carb plus high-carb (potaotes, bread, crunchies!) is a recipe for disaster! And it's what got us into this mess in the first place.

Heliumheart - you know daily weighing is going to show fluctuations, due to hormone activity, water retention, bowel movements - that's why we weigh weekly. If you do weigh daily, chart it, but don't fixatre on it, as you can quite easily then think 'fuckit' and chuck it in. As Maryz says, 2 days is nothing.

Plonkysaurus · 08/01/2014 08:31

I think CaptainMummy's right. But those crunches are mighty yummy. I have to confess, I was so craving something sweet last night that I did something incredibly shameful. I had a glug of cream straight out of the pot Blush. It killed both the craving and my dignity.

helium don't be downhearted. Give it a few weeks and see if there's an acceptable level of change. Personally the thought of moving on to boot camp light is really motivating for me, as that's how I like to eat anyway. Like pp said, your body is having a tantrum. Ignore it!

Arbuthnot · 08/01/2014 08:38

Well I have had two days of excess- but non-carb excess and instead of putting on weight nothing has changed, which is amazing. I know that BIWI said no calorie counting but I did just to see anyway and have eaten well over 2500 calories with loads of fat. I am now hopefully off binge mode so if I can eat properly but with this way of eating the sky is the limit!
I think that I couldn't get my head around the idea of high fat being ok so was testing it and it turns out that you are all right Grin

Eggs in clouds - amazing Shock

That is all.

googoogoggles · 08/01/2014 09:53

Hi all
Posting not reading - will catch up this eve
Am doing a BC light max this week - low carb, high fat with yog/berries, few nuts, cream, cheese and there will be a glass or two of white wine at the weekend (got a 'do') but then strictly BC from Monday...
After drinking back coffee for years, will now find it hard to do without a big glug of cream in it!
Yesterday:
B Coffee with cream x 3 ( over whole morning)
L cold frittata (3eggs, courgettes and spring onions with few chunks of feta)
D leftover braised beef stew with courgette pasta (done in butter) plus strawberries in Total yog with grated vanilla (mill thing)
(Not enough water - hv got to get that sorted from nxt week)
Hope everyone is doing okay!

googoogoggles · 08/01/2014 09:54

That is a LOT of food but I am a greedy guzzler.....

BIWI · 08/01/2014 10:03

heliumheart - don't be downhearted!

There are three things I will say:

  • daily weighing is a bit of a nightmare if a slight increase is going to send you into a frenzy of disappointment. Your body's weight fluctuates naturally, as has been said above (also dependent on where you are in your menstrual cycle)
  • it's only 2 days! Everyone is different and will lose weight differently and at different rates. You really need to give it a good week
  • whenever people say they've been following the rules I can guarantee that usually they haven't been Grin. We'll ignore the little matter of the teaspoon of sugar for the moment - but have you been drinking enough water? Have you been eating enough fat? Really? Wink

The other thing to take into account is how much weight you actually need to lose - if you haven't got masses to lose, then you won't lose as much as someone who has loads.

Stick with the knitting, as Pistey might say ...

Hey again. Dinner last night ended up being bbq wings. A little high in carbs, but at least I didn't eat anything carby with it.

So far have had poached eggs, courgette and a little bit of tomato. Must remember to drink loads of water. I think I had about 6 glasses yesterday, must drink more!

PseudoBadger · 08/01/2014 10:31

Greek yoghurt (waitrose) first thing, then a 2 egg omelette with ham, mushrooms and cheese cooked in butter just now. Yum!

LittleMissDisorganized · 08/01/2014 10:51

Really great encouragement here - thanks for all the tips that we can all glean (even/ especially when they're addressed to someone else or newcomers in general).

Can I just ask about soya - I currently use unsweetened soya milk and would usually eat soya yogurt (Alpro, 2.1g carbs/ 100g). Are they ok? The yogurt is lower in fat than the Greek yogurt which might be the problem.

I am sensitive, certainly not intolerant, of lactose, usually fine with cheese but I have other dairy in moderation, I find cream is ok if it's cooked/ heated (must do something to the proteins??). I am thinking that once all the carbs are gone from my system... I might find dairy is not so bad at all.

Am reading recipes and writing shopping list and please God may I be allowed to stand/ walk after clinic this afternoon and life can start moving again.

HumphreyCobbler · 08/01/2014 11:19

Good Luck LittleMiss. It must have been so hard, being immobile for so long. Having severe SPD for two months gave me a small insight into life with mobility issues.

I have just made ds's birthday cake. It was very hard not to lick the bowl. I threw it into the sink quickly and squirted washing up liquid all over it.
