'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Oh, and I've bought a bottle of PLJ which I'm putting in my sparkling water. Only a small amount, but it adds a lovely sharpness to it.

Kefy - I make my own coleslaw, with chopped leeks, cabbage and carot in mayo.

Nuts are indeed the work of the devil - keep them for bootcamp light (she says, with brazils and macadamias in the larder) - having said that, macadamias are the lowest carb...Peanuts are the worst, being legumes rather than nuts (we don't eat pulses )
It's a good idea to have low-carb snacks in the fridge, like cold sausages, slices of meat, hardboiled eggs, cubes of cheese, chopped celery/cucumber etc.
alacarte - of coure you can join!

PseudoBadger · 07/01/2014 21:25

Today:

Breakfast - Waitrose Greek yoghurt

Snacks and drinks Ham, cheddar cheese, Tea and milk x 2, Coffee with cream

Lunch - Hot smoked salmon with mayo (this is delicious!), lettuce, celery, cucumber, PE dressing

Dinner- Sausages, celeriac and leek gratin, spinach fried in butter.

Pretty sure I've screwed up today Sad. A combination of getting in from work hungry (not enough lunch and no snacks to hand), DS throwing the mother of all tantrums at bedtime and DH being stuck on train due to weather (just got in two mins ago) led me to eat:

Bowl of Total and double cream, three big chunks of cheese, a handful of naive ham, six cheese crisps (cheese piles baked in oven), teaspoon of peanut butter, and a coffee with cream.

That's all I've had this evening, but I feel really disappointed with myself. Arrggghhhh, why do I always do this?

PseudoBadger · 07/01/2014 21:51

Naive ham? :o

ChesterDrawers · 07/01/2014 21:51

Naice

captainmummy · 07/01/2014 21:55

Chester - what do you think you've done wrong? Apart from th peanut butter? Grin

captainmummy · 07/01/2014 21:57

It's a little cheese/cream heavy, but add some green leaves and lots of water and it's a good'un

ChesterDrawers · 07/01/2014 22:02

I'm only a week in and found it tough today. I'm usually a massive emotional eater and felt a bit bingey and out of control. Not felt like that all week and it took me by surprise.

I've had loads of water today so am ok on that front, just a bit scared about the high dairy.

Bloody peanut butter was a complete fuckit moment too.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/01/2014 22:06

Chester, that doesn't sound that bad. Be kind to yourself. I am on day two and I ate TWO porksteaks fried in butter (along with half a cauliflower mashed up with butter, fried leeks and cream cheese, it was delish) for my evening meal.

Do you know if dairy stalls you? It only stalled me when I was nearing the end of my weightloss last time.

ChesterDrawers · 07/01/2014 22:12

I don't know of dairy stalls me, but I suspect I might be about to find out Hmm

ChesterDrawers · 07/01/2014 22:14

Oh FFS, if dairy stalls me.

Dairy clearly makes me lose the ability to preview posts.

Started today due to LOs being away so can have a really good go without their treats everyone. Went to Farmfoods on a recommendation n bought 3 whole chickens for £10. Cooked n had some some broccoli, 'twas heaven Grin

fizzly · 07/01/2014 22:18

DH and I both suffering from carb flu big time. Fortunately not the first time we've done this WOE o we know that it's going to get better, but jeez I'm not enjoying it at all.

Today:
B: 2 boiled eggs with butter
L: Spinach/celeriac soup with some chicken carbonara left overs from last night on the side.
Snacks: cucumbers, pepper (bit carby?), probably too much cheese
D: Roast chicken with a little asparagus and quite a lot of fried red cabbage and kale.

Possibly not enough water but am trying to make up for it this evening which means I'll be peeing all night. Yahoo...

ElBombero · 07/01/2014 22:20

Bought some courgette today, have read somewhere how to cook it like pasta but can't find it again now. Any advice?

MrsHerculePoirot · 07/01/2014 22:25

lucy. Yes it works on celery - it goes with ANYTHING. I am a BIG fan!!!

Ruprekt · 07/01/2014 22:26

Facebook has a Low Carbing Amongst Friends page.....great recipes.

Ditch the wheat is good too.Smile

HumphreyCobbler · 07/01/2014 22:33

when I eat courgette instead of pasta I peel it into ribbons with a veg peeler, toss it in olive oil and bung it in the microwave. Seems to work well, not sure if this is the proper method or not.

alacarte · 07/01/2014 22:38

Breakfast: 2 poached eggs, leeks sautéed in butter, mayonnaise, salad
no lunch, no dinner yet Hmm but I pigged out on honey roasted nuts, dammit. Need to get my head back in this game again!

ElBombero · 07/01/2014 22:50

Ta Humphrey, how long for?

Southsearocks · 07/01/2014 22:58

I'm easing into it. Made cauliflower rice today and had it with chilli (using up what's in the freezer) and cheese. It was delish! I also had one, smallish, M&S chocolate truffle but it was only 3.9g carb Grin

Is Quorn allowed or is it too carby?

Kefybaby · 07/01/2014 23:14

Thanks for the responses on coleslow. It was the coop one - 5.3g of carbs per 100g. It is mayo and cream based, which sounded encouraging. Captain, I love the sound of your coleslow recipe and will give it a go - thanks.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 08/01/2014 00:06

Shock You've all started without me!! Grin

I was going to ease into bootcamp light this week but I keep thinking 'just one more slice of bread/bowl of pasta...' Blush

Definitely starting Monday though.

southsearoacks - Quorn varies wildly in the carb g per 100 g - check the packets. I try not to have too much of it as I don't think it's that healthy, but when I do I have the 'Chicken Style Pieces' as they are only 1g of carbs per 100g. The fillets are much higher - I think it must be whatever 'binds' them?! I only eat it at all because I'm vegetarian, if I wasn't I'd avoid it.

Crabby that's exactly why I started Bootcamp Proper today - I can't do 'easing in' Grin

Today: Day 1 (of this Bootcamp - long term low carber who leapt off the wagon big style for Christmas - complete and utter Carby Twat Grin)

Brunch - Rocket, raddish, cherry toms (3.5g per 100 according to the wrapping), whole avocado, Taifun basil infused ready to eat tofu, egg free mayo (not ideal, but needs must), Food Doctor seeds.

Dinner - brocolli, courgette, spinach in a cheese sauce (cream & grated cheese with mustard & black pepper), quorn (loads - gulp - 250g of the chicken style pieces but it stopped me having anything carby).

No snacks.

Two cups of coffee with a 'glug' of full fat milk - I hate cream in coffee (too sweet) and this is my sanity saver right now - I've given up lattes & I can't give up coffee this week too - otherwise there will be carnage Grin I'm trying to keep the milk to a minimum.

2l of water - which is good, but I'm aiming for more.
