Week 5 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the second half

First, I wanted to start by saying 'RIP Dr Michael Mosley'. Although Bootcamp isn't like any of the plans he developed and advocated, I have read all of his books, since he wrote The 8-week Blood Sugar Diet, and have always admired how he worked with and developed his plans around the latest science. The recipe books, written and developed by his wife, Dr Claire Bailey, are really good - easy, tasty and (mostly) in line with the WOE we advocate on Bootcamp. As he moved the Fast800 more and more towards a low carb approach, the recipe books became even more accessible for us.

Like many, I followed the news of his going missing very closely, and was hoping that he would be found alive and well. Sadly, it was not to be. He leaves behind a fantastic legacy, I think, and I'm very sad for his wife and children.

@NotDonna That's exactly what I've just done at work! Green tea.

NotDonna · 14/06/2024 07:44

@lastchancesalmon if it is bc it’s cold & wet could you make a big teapot of herbal tea?

Ooh good idea.

Bex5490 · 14/06/2024 12:28

How irritating to order the ‘cheese and mushroom frittata with side salad’ in the John Lewis cafe only to find that its full of potato…

Why would anyone want to eat what is essentially a quiche without the carby base stuffed with carbs?

Rant over 😂

NotDonna · 14/06/2024 13:45

@Bex5490 I know there’s so many frittata recipes with blinking potatoes in them! Tbf I think the traditional Italian frittata is made with fried potatoes.
I’ve just made the Salmon & Feta bake from the IPD cookbook, (a crustless quiche really), smells divine! I’m a bit annoyed that I’m at an award thing for DD3 tonight so won’t be eating it. Hoping there’s some left for tomorrows lunch! The choice there is chicken supreme or risotto. I’m hoping the ‘supreme’ is seperate from the carbs.

TheOnlyMrsW · 14/06/2024 15:04

Another relying on herbal tea rather than water as it's so flipping cold!! Had a very meh week, seem to have picked up a cold so not fancying much to eat (caved and had toast yesterday), temperature barely on double figures, weight up and down........
Same as the beginning of the week this morning and after night nurse last night feeling slightly more human. Desperately trying to be well for Dave and Co tomorrow, not looking forward to the rain though 😭🌧
Glad you're feeling better @BIWI, everyone seems to forget that covid is still around and not pleasant.
Chicken casserole in the slow cooker for dinner and then a meal plan for next week 😊

SpellitwithaY · 14/06/2024 18:48

I've had two compliments this week! Such a boost!

I've made "pickle" chips tonight and can report they're not bad! Mozzarella in a muffin tin, pickle slice on top then a little cheddar grated on top then baked for 10 mins. The pickle cuts through the richness of the cheese 😁

We're having steak, garlic mushrooms and baked aubergine for dinner tonight so that'll be nice.

Gingerwarthog · 14/06/2024 21:47

Good day for low-carbing.
Olives as a snack, chicken with pepper, tomatoes and chorizo, salad with feta cheese and strawberries with cream.
Lots of water and no alcohol.

lol guess I can’t be too mad at John Lewis for sticking to the original recipe!

MissBeck · 14/06/2024 23:27

Very quick hello as we've just got in from seeing an Elvis tribute singer. He was okay, but very cringe worthy when gyrating up the oldies. 😳They of course loved it!! Wouldn't go and see him again.

B: Coffee with DC and cheese
L: Tuna Salad
D: Nothing cause kids had KFC and I couldn't be bothered to do anything! Ate 3 bags of small scratchings whilst out. Just having another Coffee then bed.

NotDonna · 15/06/2024 06:46

Coffee before bed @MissBeck ? Is that decaf or do you sleep fine?
Good night at DDs awards - she won two so that was really lovely. I drank quite a lot of wine, ate a chocolate brownie but left the potato. The scales are kind this morning but I expect I’ll be up tomorrow. Especially as the whole family are out for dinner tonight.

MissBeck · 15/06/2024 10:46

@NotDonna No, it's normal coffee, but after spending the day and night on water I just wanted to taste something yummy! 😛When I say bed, I don't go straight to sleep. I always read my kindle on my phone until I drop off to sleep, literally with my phone in my hand! 😂

BIWI · 15/06/2024 15:54

Well I'm feeling much more human today! Thankfully covid has disappeared as quickly as it arrived. DH now has it though, so lots of moaning and groaning from him Grin

We're having a leftover pork dish I made on Thursday - thinly sliced pork fillet, flash fried just to brown it, then onions, garlic and thinly sliced mushrooms cooked in the same pan, with a load of cream, some tomato purée and a slosh of white wine. Add the pork back in when the sauce is cooked, just to warm it through. Delicious. DH will have his with penne and I'll have mine with Bare Naked Noodles.

Glad to hear you are better @BIWI , and that pork dish sounds good. I've just made and eaten the prawn curry you posted a couple of weeks ago but were a bit disappointed by. I really enjoyed it (I added a small sliced courgette and some extra spinach because I didn't want to spring for two bags of raw king prawns!) and ate it with a Srsly wrap.

Magnolia82 · 15/06/2024 18:29

NotDonna · 12/06/2024 05:54

@Magnolia82 do they taste vinegary? I’m not sure if it’s these ones I’ve had from Tesco or another brand from Tesco but they had a really weird taste. They’re all 100% cauli so no idea where the odd taste comes from.
@BIWI do hope you’re not feeling ill with it and you have a speedy recovery!
@Lougle fingers crossed the med changes make all the difference!
@prettybird great he’s got a date! You will be extremely fit! Don’t give him a bell or anything though. I also believe these days they like to get them up & moving pretty quickly so fingers crossed you won’t be too busy!

Im up at stupid o clock as the dog wanted out at 4am - poor thing had a poorly tummy so thank heavens I did take him out. Needless to say the cold morning air was rather bracing (esp in my flimsy PJs) and no way am I getting back to sleep. So broken my promise and already on the coffee!
DD2 arrived home from uni last night so today will be spent trying to find storage for all her stuff before DD3 moves back home with even more stuff at the weekend! I was going to make Chorizo Rapido from the IPD book but I’ve loads of ‘lamb shawarma’ left so lunch will be that with feta & salad. DD2 can have flat bread with it. Think I’ll do the IPD Spanish chicken tonight as all 5 of us home. Plus I’ll prep the leeks & cabbage and do a mash of celeriac & cauli for the fridge/freezer. I find it much easier to have these on hand when I’m making everyone else carby sides.

Edited

@NotDonna Sorry for taking so long to reply. No - the cauliflower rice didn't taste vinegary!

SpellitwithaY · 15/06/2024 22:33

Hi everyone! Hope you're all good. Glad you're feeling better @BIWI ☺️. That pork dish sounds amazing.

I went to Aldi in the way home yesterday as was running low on a few bits. I picked up kebabs! We had Indian inspired beef kebabs and some kind of pork tandoori ones. Absolutely gorgeous 😍. Loved it ... Have only just eaten it so was very ready for it too 😁. Yum

Lougle · 15/06/2024 22:38

Lovely food choices. I stuffed a couple of mushrooms tonight and had them with a chicken leg.

My medication seems to be helping a little.

Thesoundofmusic23 · 15/06/2024 22:42

Glad to hear the meds are starting to help @Lougle - hope it’s an upward trajectory from here

MissBeck · 16/06/2024 09:12

Just a quick Good Morning! Busy day today. DD has rehearsals for a show she's in which has 3 weeks to go. It is 10am - 5pm! Then nip home, rest for half hour then out delivering/collecting Avon books until 7.30pmish. Then I can eat! 😛

Hope everyone has a great day!

Goodiewhemper · 16/06/2024 11:55

Hello everyone. I have had a chaotic week so just having a quick catch up. @BBIWI - sorry you hear you got covid and I hope you have made a full recovery. @prettybird it will be such a relief to have the op over and your dh won't know himself after.

This past 10 days have been totally chaotic and I have succumbed twice. I was working at the local election count last weekend. In Ireland we have proportional representation which means counts can go late into the night/early morning and over a few days. I tried to bring low carb snacks with me, but lack of refrigeration and shifts up to 16 hours meant I took the food available when my own ran out. The options were not always low carb but I avoided the obvious carbs like potato but couldn't control for everything. A few bananas were also consumed at 2am on Sunday morning. Yesterday i has to work until the late hours and got home exhausted and has a take away with some Prosecco and a bag of potato chips. I woke up this morning and was really cross with myself and was going to give up but that would be cutting off my nose to spite myself so I am still here and will accept whatever the scales tell me tomorrow.

Next weekend I am off to Edinburgh with my dd for three nights. I expect that will bring a few challenges as well. For now I am back on track and plan to drink all the water and be rigid with myself on the week ahead. Have a great day everyone.

UnOeufIsEnough · 16/06/2024 11:59

@Goodiewhemper If you need good low carb places in Edinburgh, Cafe Andaluz does fab tapas and Fazenda is easy for low carb (as long as you're not veggie!). The Botanist does hanging kebabs and they're happy to swap out chips for salad 😊

venusandmars · 16/06/2024 15:40

@Goodiewhemper lots of great seafood resaurants in Edinburgh too: Fishers in the City, Ondine, Dulse...

Bex5490 · 16/06/2024 17:50

Forgive me low carbers for I have sinned and fully deserve the dreaded big stick…

Yesterday, for the first time in a year (due to pregnancy and breastfeeding) I had some Prosecco.

I thought I could just have 1 but it was so delicious and the music at the place I was at was too good so I ended up going for the bottomless option and I have NO idea how many I had. Which led to the burger and chips at 1 am on the way home…

I’ve resisted my usual hangover pizza but still dreading the scales tomorrow…

@Bex5490 🍔🍾🍟oopsie!! Lessons learnt! Dust yourself down and get back on the wagon. Don’t let this blip swerve you! KOKO x

DrBlackbird · 16/06/2024 21:16

I’ve had garlic prawns and salad (no dressing) for dinner tonight and flaked salmon and a couple slices cheese and some ham on lettuce with a bit of Dijon mayo for lunch. One egg and one sausage for breakfast. Virtuously 😇 declined the cake twice today that DH and a friend were having and the pasta they had with the garlic prawns.

BUT I’m not budging with the weight. Grrr. I’m not drinking enough water for sure. But that can’t be the main issue surely?! Is what I’m having for each meal too much? I’m hungry between meals but refraining from any snacking. Clothes feel a bit looser. Still, not looking forward to tomorrows’ weighing 😭
