Week 5 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the second half

First, I wanted to start by saying 'RIP Dr Michael Mosley'. Although Bootcamp isn't like any of the plans he developed and advocated, I have read all of his books, since he wrote The 8-week Blood Sugar Diet, and have always admired how he worked with and developed his plans around the latest science. The recipe books, written and developed by his wife, Dr Claire Bailey, are really good - easy, tasty and (mostly) in line with the WOE we advocate on Bootcamp. As he moved the Fast800 more and more towards a low carb approach, the recipe books became even more accessible for us.

Like many, I followed the news of his going missing very closely, and was hoping that he would be found alive and well. Sadly, it was not to be. He leaves behind a fantastic legacy, I think, and I'm very sad for his wife and children.

I've just rewatched Michael Mosley's 'Eat, Fast and Live Longer' on BBC iplayer which kicked off the 5 2 trend back in 2012. Fascinating stuff. I've never managed to stick to intermittent fasting for long enough to make a big difference but. 5 2 low carb might be easier - just couldn't be high fat for those two days .... tempted to try it after bootcamp.

MissBeckIsAtWork · 11/06/2024 12:29

I'm sat here tucking into a chicken and cheese salad smothered in the delicious marie rose sauce! 😍

BIWI · 11/06/2024 13:32

Just remember that the ketchup, even if it is no added sugar, still does have carbs in it!

Very meh start to the week here, I haven't planned properly and not especially hungry as coming up to totm, I've spent the morning snacking on cheese and sulking cos we're not going to Download!!!!!! We are going to see the lovely Dave and the Foos on Saturday but still got major fomo 😂
Somehow managed not to have either eggs or tomatoes in the house so will make a meal plan for the rest of the week and do a top-up shop this afternoon, roofers are done and scaffolding coming down now so that will give me something to do for the rest of the week - house needs putting back together and cleaning!
I'm sure if it stopped being so bloody cold it would be a bit better, seem to be spending a lot of time looking a sunny places for breaks which we can't afford to take - cos new roof...................

I know, it reality it was a heaped tablespoon of mayonaisse, and it was the tiniest squirt of tomato sauce, but when I plonked it in my salad tub, it covered my leaves generously. It won't be a daily thing. 🙂

Stowickthevast · 11/06/2024 15:04

Just popping by to share my new lunch/snack tip - chicory as bread. It works really well with a bit of boursin/Philly/mackerel pate/goats cheese or whatever you fancy.

This may well be already known to you old hands but was a revelation to me.

Also desperate for some warmth, this summer has been non-existent.

MissBeck · 11/06/2024 16:45

I picked up some minted lamb steaks from my butcher on the way home for DD as she loves them. A google search is showing carb counts from 0 to 19.5 carbs so not useful at all. Anyone know if they will be bootcamp friendly??

Gingerwarthog · 11/06/2024 18:44

Weighed today and am 144.5 (1lb heavier than my lowest point last weight). This is still a decent loss and I am sure it's due to not drinking (alcohol) - drinking loads of water though.

NotDonna · 11/06/2024 18:54

@MissBeck it depends entirely what your butcher has used to make them minty! If it’s lots of sugar then… 😬

@alwaysonadiet1 if your interested in intermittent fasting Jason Fung (Canadian prof) is where Michael Mosely got most of his research from. He does some fab sciencey and layman type talks on YouTube. Lots about insulin resistance etc- really interesting stuff if you’re interested in the science. I don’t do 5:2 but have an eating window between 12noon to 8pm. It does mean that I then have a rather large lunch though. My portions are reasonably generous for both lunch and dinner, so I probs don’t eat any less doing this but it does mean I fast from 8pm to 12noon - 16hrs (but predominately overnight). I try not to have coffee with almond milk or cream in the mornings but…

Had a birthday lunch today, which was lovely. But did mean I had 2 glasses of wine and a pud - affogato! Swerved the potatoes and asked for extra veg along with my pork. Puds are impossible to swerve when I’d be the only one NOT having one. Chose the affogato as knew the ice cream wouldn’t be too sweet especially with the espresso poured over. Tonight I made Thai meatballs with peanut sauce from Idiot Proof Diet cookbook. DH & DDs had noodles and veg & I just had veg.

MissBeck · 11/06/2024 19:11

@NotDonna Too late, I had one! 😂I've seen him do them, and it's a powder he uses. I'll ask him on Friday. Glad you had a good birthday lunch!

@TheOnlyMrsW Glad your roof is done! You might feel better once you've put the house back together!

Quite proud of myself today. I was craving so bad for the bag of scratchings in my desk draw, but resisted!

B: Coffee with DC and cheese.
L: Chicken salad with marie rose sauce.
D: Minted lamb steak with buttery brocolli, cauliflour, sprouts and pigs in blankets.

PseudoBadger · 11/06/2024 19:17

Hey everyone, just reporting in from my second day on bootcamp and my first day in the office. It went ok, I wasn't too hungry!

B - coffee with cream, scrambled eggs with butter and cream
L - FFGY, olives
Snack - avocado with vinaigrette
D - steak, mushrooms and spinach in butter, broccoli.

Magnolia82 · 11/06/2024 19:20

Aware this might be old news to all of you, but just discovered these frozen individual packs of cauliflower rice. They are perfect to have in the freezer (especially if others are having regular rice).

So it turns out, I have Covid ...

FFS.

prettybird · 11/06/2024 22:31

FFS on your behalf. Shock

That's an unfair reward for enjoying a treat away Sad

prettybird · 11/06/2024 22:37

In good news, dh got his date for his hip operation: next Friday Shock

Day surgery Shock

We live on the first (and attic) floor of a Victorian villa, so once he's home after confirming he can cope with stairs Wink, I'm "it" for everything: shopping, bins, mowing the lawn, getting the tea.... Grin

He's already admitted he's going to milk it Hmm

Lougle · 11/06/2024 23:16

@BIWI oh poor you! Are you feeling it?

@prettybird good news about the op. I would commiserate with you but it sounds like you could end up with a whoosh due to increased exercise... Sunny side up.

I'm feeling rather stupid today. I've been in a flare for ages with my IBD. I've been waiting 6 months for a migraine clinic appointment, which only one doctor in the whole hospital is allowed to run. I'm finally getting Rimegepant. It turns out that he happens to be a GP as well, and he has IBD. He told me off for ignoring my flare and instructed me to contact the IBD helpline. This evening, a lovely nurse called and she's changed all my meds, included a steroid foam to try and whack me into remission, ordered a blood test and a fecal calprotectin test, and it's all available for me to collect tomorrow. I even managed to log on and book a blood test for tomorrow morning. She's asked me to call her on Tuesday and let her know how I'm feeling. I should have called a couple of months ago.

lastchancesalmon · 11/06/2024 23:55

Well halloo

@BIWI that is bad luck. I hope you are feeling better soon.

@prettybird that sounds like a very tall order. Great news the op is on but can anyone help you for a bit?

@Lougle what great service (once your waiting was over) hope this helps find some good treatment for you

@PseudoBadger great work, keep it up!

@alwaysonadiet1 @NotDonna Jason Fung is my number one inspiration- I just really understood how he was explaining the insulin science and I was intrigued that he is a renal doctor that spotted obesity issues with his patients

@MissBeck speaking of (maybe) sugar in things I bought some black pepper cashews from M&S as a little nibbly treat and thought they tasted sweet only to find they have sugar added! WTAF! Hopefully butcher is more wholesome

@TheOnlyMrsW I agree, I'm so cold I want stews and soups and stodgy puds to keep me warm!

Late checking in this week but it's been busy. I logged a sts on the spreadsheet yesterday but had a pleasing little woosh overnight for a 2.2lb loss which puts me well under the next stone finally and half way down a BMI point too. Very pleased. My app tells me I've been on a downward trend for 28 days and I'm 2lb lighter than this time last year.

I enjoyed having a low carb wrap at the weekend - just really wanted my BBQ meat and salad to come in something I could pick up! DD the LCHF guru in our house eats them but I'd be interested in what @BIWI thinks? Tortillas www.ocado.com/products/carbzone-lowcarb-fibre-rich-large-tortillas-248827011

NotDonna · 12/06/2024 05:54

@Magnolia82 do they taste vinegary? I’m not sure if it’s these ones I’ve had from Tesco or another brand from Tesco but they had a really weird taste. They’re all 100% cauli so no idea where the odd taste comes from.
@BIWI do hope you’re not feeling ill with it and you have a speedy recovery!
@Lougle fingers crossed the med changes make all the difference!
@prettybird great he’s got a date! You will be extremely fit! Don’t give him a bell or anything though. I also believe these days they like to get them up & moving pretty quickly so fingers crossed you won’t be too busy!

Im up at stupid o clock as the dog wanted out at 4am - poor thing had a poorly tummy so thank heavens I did take him out. Needless to say the cold morning air was rather bracing (esp in my flimsy PJs) and no way am I getting back to sleep. So broken my promise and already on the coffee!
DD2 arrived home from uni last night so today will be spent trying to find storage for all her stuff before DD3 moves back home with even more stuff at the weekend! I was going to make Chorizo Rapido from the IPD book but I’ve loads of ‘lamb shawarma’ left so lunch will be that with feta & salad. DD2 can have flat bread with it. Think I’ll do the IPD Spanish chicken tonight as all 5 of us home. Plus I’ll prep the leeks & cabbage and do a mash of celeriac & cauli for the fridge/freezer. I find it much easier to have these on hand when I’m making everyone else carby sides.

MissBeck · 12/06/2024 20:10

@BIWI Oh no BIWI. Hope you get off lightly!!

@prettybird Sounds like it's time to get your maids outfit on!

@Lougle Looks like you saw just the right man! Hope your tests come back okay.

@lastchancesalmon I'm jealous of your whoosh and BMI dropping. 😂

@NotDonna Bloody hell! 4am!! I was just getting up for my 3rd wee then! 😂

Where is everyone today?? Very quiet on here.

Finallly finished my taxi duties for DD. She will be dropped off home later by her boyfriends parents. Now in my pyjamas cooking dinner. I'm famished!

B: Coffee with DD and cheese
L: Cold chicken breast and half bag of scratchings
D: Bacon, sausage and mushrooms

prettybird · 12/06/2024 20:21

@lastchancesalmon : it will be no real problem looking after dh. He'll be out of sorts as he's never had a major op before (worst he's had was some knee keyhole surgery under a local) so he's really apprehensive as to how he'll cope. And while he's been ok with the pain of the hip, he doesn't know what the post-operative pain will be like.

My very lovely SIL will help if required, as will ds and his girlfriend. They live close by (about 10 minutes away).

Also for an alternative to a wrap: try the low carb flat breads (Tom Kerridge recipe) in the veggie thread. They're very easy Smile

BIWI.. sorry you have Covid...are yoghurt raisins ok as a snack?

I'll answer for BIWI

NO!!!!! Shock

Raisins are essentially pure sugar Shock ....dried up, sugar concentrated grapes Confused

And that's before even looking to see if there's any sugar in the yoghurt coating Hmm
