Week 5 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the second half

BIWI · 10/06/2024 08:40

First, I wanted to start by saying 'RIP Dr Michael Mosley'. Although Bootcamp isn't like any of the plans he developed and advocated, I have read all of his books, since he wrote The 8-week Blood Sugar Diet, and have always admired how he worked with and developed his plans around the latest science. The recipe books, written and developed by his wife, Dr Claire Bailey, are really good - easy, tasty and (mostly) in line with the WOE we advocate on Bootcamp. As he moved the Fast800 more and more towards a low carb approach, the recipe books became even more accessible for us.

Like many, I followed the news of his going missing very closely, and was hoping that he would be found alive and well. Sadly, it was not to be. He leaves behind a fantastic legacy, I think, and I'm very sad for his wife and children.

BIWI.. sorry you have Covid...are yoghurt raisins ok as a snack?

No! Raisins are really high in carbs anyway. Not sure what brand you're looking at, but the Sainsbury's ones are 67g carbs per 100g.

Hallo from not so sunny Mallorca ,
had a stupid busy week before we went on holiday and my scales have gone mad ( they told me I’d lost a stone overnight , I mean , nice idea but in reality … no ) so I’ve just put stayed the same weight and will sort new scales out at some stage
but let’s face it , clothes tell the truth

💐@BIWI hope you’re feeling better soon

UnOeufIsEnough · 12/06/2024 22:34

@BIWI hope you're starting to feel better! 💐

@LilianaVikavanovichHope the weather improves! I was in Portugal over the weekend and Friday was decidedly chilly!

Gingerwarthog · 12/06/2024 22:39

Ok. Looking for something as a snack that's healthy...

BIWI · 12/06/2024 22:54

Hard-boiled eggs
Cooked low carb sausages
Olives
Cheese
Celery
Cucumber

BIWI · 12/06/2024 22:54

... but by now you shouldn't be hungry between meals so shouldn't need to snack!

@prettybird sounds good 👍

@MissBeck Yay! 💃💃💃

Get well soon @BIWI

UnOeufIsEnough · 13/06/2024 08:38

My 5lb of holiday/flying bloat has come off since Monday's weigh in so back on track! I re-weighed myself on Monday night and was already 1.4lb down so I edited the spreadsheet with my more favourable weight!

SpellitwithaY · 13/06/2024 08:54

Uneoufisenough that's brilliant! Always daunting when you see the post holiday figures so it's amazing it's come straight off!

Went out last night so hopefully went with the least worst option. Had pork belly with scallops asked for no dauphinouse potatoes (bloody love them) and extra broccoli. I swear I only dunked my pork in the gravy a few times... It was lovely

B - Yog cream and strawberries
L - salad with salami ham and cheese
D - probably gammon steak w salad or something or other. I do have courgettes and mushrooms so that might be nice 🙂

Was pleased to see another 2lbs off so 12 in total now! It's so motivating to see it coming down!

@biwi hope you're not feeling too grotty

BIWI · 13/06/2024 09:02

Thanks for all good wishes. Thankfully I'm feeling much better today, so I'm hopeful I've seen it off quite quickly. This is my 3rd bout of Covid, so not impresssed Angry

Will catch up properly with the thread now.

Hope you continue to feel better @BIWI

Ok so this is my first week, now day 4. Weighed 208lbs yesterday first thing. Today first thing (but slightly earlier than yesterday) I was 199! Is that even possible?

BIWI · 13/06/2024 11:04

It absolutely is possible @PseudoBadger Grin
Well done. Flowers

Wow ok!

NotDonna · 13/06/2024 11:38

A 9lb whoosh!! That’s more than the average baby!! Bloody well done you @PseudoBadger 🥳🥳

Lougle · 13/06/2024 11:41

I'm up 1lb on last Thursday's weight. I know it's the IBD but it's still annoying. I don't know how long it will take for the treatment to kick in.

UnOeufIsEnough · 13/06/2024 12:08

Fantastic @PseudoBadger 🙌

UnOeufIsEnough · 13/06/2024 12:10

@SpellitwithaY that's so true! I knew I hadn't eaten enough calories for that kind of weight gain but it's nice to see the scales coming back down.

Great job on the 12lb and the pork belly sounds delicious 😋

BIWI · 13/06/2024 12:35

@PseudoBadger when you start low carbing, three things happen. First, you lose water. Second you empty your glycogen stores (where excess glucose is kept, in the liver and muscles) and third you lose a little bit of fat. It's the emptying of the glycogen stores that accounts for the significance of the loss, and which makes low carbing (at least at the beginning) more 'successful' than other diets.

You may also see a big drop in week 2, but it's not likely to be as much as in week 1, and then after that you'll be losing just fat, so the rate of loss will slow down.

Just slipping back into the thread, having given myself a stern talking to over the weekend. The death of Michael Mosley has given me food for thought too, I have picked up a few of his Just One Thing habits. STS on the scales on Monday (not surprising).

@BIWI sorry about the covid, hope you are better soon (and others that have had it recently).

@prettybird glad DH has got his op date, I remember both my DF and DMIL recovering very quickly from hip replacements some years ago.

@MissBeck my DD won't touch onion either, if I put it in anything she picks it all out, every single bit and if I say I'm going to cook something with it in now she'll say don't cook for me, I'll grab something else. We use a lot of celery and carrot blitzed in a mini chopper instead, I guess that would work in gravy too although a bit bittier than onion. Frustrating because I LOVE onion gravy.

My Sriously Low Carb bread arrived yesterday, I had a bread roll before freezing the rest. It was a good balance between serving a useful function as a base for a quick bite to eat but not being so delicious you want to gorge yourself on it. I also bought some of the pickle from the website, which is quite nice, a bit like Branston but a lot runnier so you don't use as much. I do eat quite a lot of snack meals because I go to exercise classes a lot of evenings and need something to eat but not a full meal beforehand. I have upped my exercise quite a bit this year and the heart measurements from my apple watch are moving in the right direction which is pleasing. It messes with mealtimes but on the other hand when I'm exercising I'm not eating.

SpellitwithaY · 13/06/2024 14:27

I've ordered a pack of low carb breads from Heylo. Can't wait for them to arrive! 😁🍞🥖🥪

Bloody starving today.

pangolinfan · 13/06/2024 15:51

@EasterlyDirection I did exactly the same with my Srsly low carb bread order (and agree with you - one roll didn't make me want to immediately eat another two of them!)

@prettybird as I've had a good week so far I have made the clementine cake you kindly posted. Made it two loaf tins, to make it easier to slice and freeze and I have put a lemon drizzle style glaze (orange cooking water, inulin, orange extract) on one of them to compare and contrast. - see below) p. The kitchen smells delicious.
@BIWI very glad you are on the mend - somehow even more tiresome to get sick in the summertime (not that there's too much evidence of that here today).

Week 5 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the second half
MissBeck · 13/06/2024 20:06

Good evening.

@UnOeufIsEnough Glad to see the scales are playing nice!

@SpellitwithaY Ooh, Pork belly! One of my favourites! never tried scallops though.

@BIWI Glad to see you're perking up.

@PseudoBadger Excellent start!! Well done!

I'm really not very hungry tonight, so my meal intake has been poor today.

B: Coffee with double cream
L: Prawn cocktail salad
D: Nothing yet, but did pinch 2 pieces of bacon earlier when cooking DD and friend their dinner. They had cheese and bacon pasta bake. I had to laugh as I always eat one piece of pasta to test if it is cooked enough, but I couldn't tonight could I! So I put it in my mouth and bit it, but then spit it in the bin! 😂

lastchancesalmon · 13/06/2024 23:58

@MissBeck I do that with the pasta when on boot camp 😂

Well last night I went to meet our MP local Conservative candidate (she'll be our MP you could put up a teddy with a blue rosette here and it'd be as safe a seat) which was great - a Q&A in the pub! Some heckling about 'National service'. Both my drinks were large glasses of wine which then resulted in crisps and chips 😱. I don't know why I'm never able to remember that if I don't drink enough water I drink wine in a thirsty way... Anyway, what I do love about this WOE once you've got over the cravings is if there is a slip, you just get right back to it, which I did.

B creamy coffee
L chicken, leaves with Caesar dressing, eggs mayonnaise and parmesan
D veal steaks, hm mushroom sauce (shallot, garlic, mushroom, glad of wine reduced, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, creme fraiche) with slices spring greens stir fried in butter.
Not enough water again (is it because it's so cold and wet?)

NotDonna · 14/06/2024 07:44

@lastchancesalmon if it is bc it’s cold & wet could you make a big teapot of herbal tea?
