Week 5 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the second half

First, I wanted to start by saying 'RIP Dr Michael Mosley'. Although Bootcamp isn't like any of the plans he developed and advocated, I have read all of his books, since he wrote The 8-week Blood Sugar Diet, and have always admired how he worked with and developed his plans around the latest science. The recipe books, written and developed by his wife, Dr Claire Bailey, are really good - easy, tasty and (mostly) in line with the WOE we advocate on Bootcamp. As he moved the Fast800 more and more towards a low carb approach, the recipe books became even more accessible for us.

Like many, I followed the news of his going missing very closely, and was hoping that he would be found alive and well. Sadly, it was not to be. He leaves behind a fantastic legacy, I think, and I'm very sad for his wife and children.

Moving on.

Here's the spreadsheet once again

We're now past the half-way point, and also - hopefully! - have left the doldrums of weeks 3 and 4 behind. From now, you should anticipate weight loss to be a little slower/lower than in the initial couple of weeks, but if you KOKO following the rules, it should be consistent.

I've started the week with a cold. I haven't had a cold for a very long time, and I'm a bit miffed about it! But if made me think about our Covid sufferers, and wonder how you're all doing?

Just copied from the old thread!

STS which I'm not really surprised by - way too much wine watching Soccer Aid with DD yesterday, not even the bouncing at Day Fever on Saturday can counteract that! Going to have a super strict week, not too busy and then out Friday and Saturday!!! Hoping for good weather to a) counteract the blues and chances of fuckits and b) so I can tidy the outside once the roof work is finished today!!!!!

OpalTiger · 10/06/2024 08:56

1 lb on this week which, to be fair, is a miracle considering I completely derailed at the weekend. A close friend of mine showed up on my doorstep having left her husband so there was a LOT of wine and sympathetic comfort eating over the weekend… I’m going back to strict boot camp rules for this week to get back on track and detox!

PseudoBadger · 10/06/2024 09:28

Hey @BIWI - can I join? I know you're a few weeks in but I have done bootcamps before and am in a desperate state....

alwaysonadiet1 · 10/06/2024 09:29

RIP Michael Mosley. So sad.

Thesoundofmusic23 · 10/06/2024 09:31

Finally on a downward trajectory this week. Daily weigher so I can see the pattern. 1.6lbs off and heading towards my goal weight for this boot camp of 140 🙌 which is very exciting. To be honest that might be my long term goal. Had to go any buy new bras yesterday.

BIWI · 10/06/2024 09:32

Of course you can @PseudoBadger - you're very welcome.

How can we help you in your desperate state?!

PseudoBadger · 10/06/2024 09:46

Thanks @BIWI! Well I need to lose about 25kg ultimately and it just seems a bit daunting. Bootcamp has worked for me really well in the past so I'm hoping it will again!

PseudoBadger · 10/06/2024 09:48

I don't have much in today so I have started with Greek yoghurt, lunch will be scrambled eggs with crispy bacon and dinner will be bolognese.

Lougle · 10/06/2024 09:48

Also copying from week 4 thread:

Morning! I'm 147.71 today, so down 0.9lb but a couple of days ago I was 147.1 and my IBD is causing difficulties, so I'm retaining. So I think it's still progress.

PseudoBadger · 10/06/2024 09:53

Oh and my back and joints are crying out for help!

fitflopqueen · 10/06/2024 09:54

Well I went away, and had a fab time eating all the tapas, cheesecake and wine so 2 lb back on. Back to being a bit stricter for the next few weeks.
So very sad about MM, he won’t be forgotten.

pangolinfan · 10/06/2024 10:08

1lb on after a bad derail last Friday (pile of crisps at a meeting I attended and then a load of biscuits with my cheese at book club) and not enough water / too much wine over the weekend. Need to get back onto it quickly and not compound the damage this week. Also need to go shopping at some point when I can get away from my desk.

prettybird · 10/06/2024 10:10

@PseudoBadger - this meme is useful if you're feeling overwhelmed by your overall goal.

@mimosa1 had a boss who once pointed out to her that (iirc), when she was reticent about starting to do a qualification that was going to take (in her mind) too long to be worth it that the time was going to pass anyway - and wouldn't it be better to use that time giving it a go Confused

I might be misremembering slightly but the sentiment resonated with me Smile

Pleaseandthankyou · 10/06/2024 10:11

Thankyou for your kind words last week. I have given myself a kick up the a**e and treated myself a bit. That has resulted in a 1lb gain over the weekend but it was worth it. That will come off this week. @BIWI is so right about investing in yourself. I buy the low carb wraps and bread. I find the wraps brilliant for lunchtimes. Last week I cooked a pastrami and made coleslaw. Gorgeous in a wrap. They are expensive but not when you compare them to a takeaway coffee. My freezer is small too so I just buy what I can fit in. I individually freeze the wraps. I just slice the bread from frozen and stick the rest of the loaf back in the freezer.

Thesoundofmusic23 · 10/06/2024 10:19

Agree with others about Michael Mosley. Such a terrible end to an extraordinary life and so much given to others.

@Lougle - I’m also an ibd sufferer which is what led to my weight gain in the first place. The joy of immunosuppressant drugs. Happy to chat if you ever need some support. I’m 30 years living with UC.

@biwi - I continue to be amazed that eating yummy food and being full has worked so well for loosing weight. I think my new normal will be a version of this, thank you for organising and supporting us all - I have really really appreciated these threads. Coincidentally this way of eating chimes with many of the very specialist diets designed for IBD so it’s a win win.

potas · 10/06/2024 10:52

Very sad about Michael Mosley. He was very good at making health advice accessible and understandable while keeping the scientific aspect.
And for his family, what a devastating way to lose someone.

I've been absent the last couple of weeks as we had a family weekend of meals out and wine and it took a while to get back on track. But stuck to the plan and back on track I am. Never lose faith!

SpellitwithaY · 10/06/2024 11:38

Hi all

Another 2lbs this week and I was hoping this would be 3 this morning but I'll take that. So 10 lbs in total!

B Yog cream and a few strawberries
L lots of salad homemade coleslaw and smoked sausage
D Chicken tikka with salad. May attempt a cauliflower rice....

Bex5490 · 10/06/2024 12:40

Only 0.6 off this week which is less than I would like but I know it’s part of the process. Determined to be super strict this week and see results!!

prettybird · 10/06/2024 12:47

Incredibly sad news about Michael Mosley Sad

I'm weighing in tomorrow (drank water this morning so wouldn't couldn't weigh myself Wink)

Had a lovely low carb cheese fondue last night, with plenty of lightly roasted veg for me (and one of my sourdough loaves cut into chunks for dh, ds and his gf). Plus a platter of dried meats and some baby plum tomatoes and mushrooms.

I also made a lovely keto clementine cake, using half erythritol/half inulin instead of the sugar in the Nigella recipe (and reduced the amount). Beautifully moist. Served it with whipped cream. Gave ds and his gf four slices to take away and wrapped 4 slices for myself to put in the freezer (apparently it freezes well). Will definitely be repeating it. It's also supposed to work well with lemons and/or oranges. I'll post the recipe into the Desserts and other sweet things thread.

Stowickthevast · 10/06/2024 13:10

@prettybird that cake looks fab. I haven't tried cooking with erythiol/inulin yet. I'm worried it would be a slippery slope.

I'm 2lb down this week which I'm pleased about but had to reset from the previous week's gain so I'm more or less back where I was two weeks ago.

I don't need to go into the office this week as my team are traveling which should mean easier lunches, but do have a big party on Saturday which will be a struggle on the alcohol front.

In some ways bootcamp is easier in the summer - salads and more water consumption - but all the social events make it tricky. Still determined to KOKO.

Good luck everyone.

pangolinfan · 10/06/2024 13:33

I would love the cake recipe too please @prettybird - some slices of cake in the freezer would definitely help me on those evenings when I miss a treat like that. Thank you.

FinallyHere · 10/06/2024 13:51

RIP Michael Moseley, thinking of his friends and family.

prettybird · 10/06/2024 14:04

I've posted the recipe for the Clementine Cake on the Desserts and Other Sweet Things recipe thread Smile

MissBeck · 10/06/2024 16:44

Afternoon all,
Back to work today after my week off. 😒Copied my weight over from the last thread. Weight:151.45lbs so a loss of 0.4llbs. I tried Philledelphia today for the first time! It's not bad!

I need to wean myself off my reliance of scratchings as I eat them everyday, and I know they are low carb, but I wonder about the sheer amount of salt I'm consuming daily.

B: Coffee with Double cream and cheese
L: Philladelphia, celery, 1 cherry tomato and a boiled egg.
D: A chicken is roasting in the oven as we speak, and I'll do pigs in blankets, brocolli, cabbage and cauliflour. DD's has her friend over, so will also have to do mash, yorkies and roasties for them! Oh, and they'll want gravy!

@prettybird Your meal (and table) look so elegant! My meals are all chucked on a plate and I sit and eat at my PC desk. 😂

@BIWI Hope your cold clears up quickly!

@PseudoBadger 👋Hello!!
