Summer 23, Week 2: the first weigh in

Good Morning Campers Smile or it will be by the time most of you are reading this Wink

Here we are at Week 2 Smile. This is shaping up to be very supportive Boot Camp - everyone sharing their experiences, both the successes and the slip ups Flowers. You are all stars Star. I haven’t had to get the Big Stick out much as people have usually recognised what happened and worked out strategies for future challenges. Flowers

I’ll leave it to @FinallyHere to post the link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness as people seem to have difficulties when I link from the App. HmmConfused

I’m expecting to see some great losses which is always really heartening Smile. It's always great seeing how newbies see that it really does work Smile

But don't despair if you haven't lost as much as others. Remember, this isn't a competition Shock. We're all here with different startpoints, and everyone loses at a different rate anyway. We all need to KOKO.

That’s also why we encourage taking measurements - usually if the scales aren’t moving, then the inches are! Grin downwards of course Wink

One more week of strict Boot Camp and then we can choose to go on to Boot Canp Light for those of us who want to Smile

The Rules are still the same: you can find them on the OP of the Week 1 thread and also in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness.

(I’m now on Week 3 but I’ll avoid talking about any of my Boot Camp Light variations for the moment Wink)

For dinner I'm experimenting and marinating boned chicken thighs with Greek yogurt, lemon juice, garlic purée, paprika and Tabasco sauce.

LadyBird1973 · 29/06/2023 13:59

Hi everyone,
Just been reading some general weight loss chats. How much protein and fat are we supposed to be eating in a day? I never actually measure it, just eat what I fancy (within the rules of bootcamp mostly), but I must admit I'm curious. On another thread a poster says she aims for 100g protein per day.

Re today's food, I've just had 2 creamy coffees due to having part one of root canal treatment this morning. Mouth is still numb snd I want to give the temp filling a chance to set properly. Thankfully this woe has meant that I'm not starving and wobbly, although I am quite hungry.
Bought ingredients to make the cheeseburger pie from the Bootcamp recipes. Might do it tomorrow though.

prettybird · 29/06/2023 17:45

@LadyBird1973 - I genuinely don't know how much protein and how much fat we should be having because we don't count them Confused

That's the whole point of the Boot Camp WoE: that we don't count calories, we don't count carbs, we don't count protein, we don't count fat Grin

We just have to follow The Rules. Smile

The effect of those Rules is that your eating becomes High Fat, Low Carb - rather than the normal "diet" approach of Low Fat, High Carb. Protein stays in the middle.

The Spreadsheet has a tab with lots of resources as to why this works. Or go back to the Week 1 thread and read through my posts (as the OP of the thread, you can filter them easily).

If you are having enough fat and protein and all the water you will be sufficiently satiated, your body will become fat adapted and start using its own fat reserves for energy and your appetite will become naturally suppressed.

NB: this is not a NO carb WoE; it is a LOW carb WoE. You get your carbs mostly from the FLGV (Fuck Load of Good Veg).

Once you are ketogenically adapted, in simplistic terms, you are using your own body for energy (because it no longer feels the need to lay the fat down as you are eating plenty and your hormones are in balance) and you are quite literally peeing the fat out. At least, that's how I like to visualise it Grin

I’ve been quiet having promised myself I wouldn’t lurk like I did last time.

I’ve been on light boot camp for a while but with a few too many deviations meaning my weight and sugar cravings were creeping up. Very glad the structure of BC has got me back off the sugar train (so freeing!) and back down to my lowest weight after the last BC.

@HappiDaze I’d love to hear how your experimental dinner turns out? It sounds lovely.

prettybird · 29/06/2023 18:01

Having a quick skim back of the thread (will do a more thorough update later), I'm feeling the need to get The Big Stick out Shock

Without pointing fingers, there have been rather too many slip ups. Hmm

This WoE works by following it

I'll be more supportive in the individual comments Wink but it's important to try to recognise the individual triggers and work out strategies to avoid/address them.

We're all in this together. We can help each other.

Remember: this is a wonderfully tasty WoE, even if it's unforgiving of aberrations - look at the lovely photos that various of us have posted of what we're eating for inspiration Flowers

OP posts:
prettybird · 29/06/2023 18:10

@HappiDaze - do the chicken thighs have skin on?

I do something similar with (bone in, skin on) chicken thighs (also works with drumsticks), slashing the skin and then marinading in yoghurt, garlic, grated ginger and various spices (paprika, cumin, coriander depending on which ones I come across first Wink - even a finely chopped chilli).

They're good on a barbecue but if I cook them in the oven, I do them on an oiled sheet of foil and turn half way through.

OP posts:
prettybird · 29/06/2023 18:15

@NotDonna - as @OldandTired66 suggests, Babybels are good to keep as an emergency food supply.

Pepperami are also good at ambient. temperature.

They're my 2 "go to" foods when I'm out and about and not sure when/what I'll be able to get (especially when travelling).

Bags of pork puffs which I like and cheesies which I'm not keen on are also useful.

OP posts:
EvenmoreDetermined · 29/06/2023 18:24

Well, I've fallen off the wagon today with a carb laden working lunch, despite taking cheese, celery etc to work and eating them beforehand. I won't go into detail but suffice it so day the carb cravings don't really go away for me on this WOE but I am much better than I used to be about resisting the urge most of the time and if I do lapse I can put it behind me and start again the next day so that's what I'm going to do.

prettybird · 29/06/2023 18:35

I should also say that while I did a brief swish of the Big Stick, I have to say that I'm impressed by the way that people are coming up against temptation (I don't want to say "falling off the wagon" Wink), acknowledging it, dusting themselves off, analysing it and then moving forward positively SmileFlowers

There have been very few cases of "Fuck-its" and most of us have quite naturally self-limited in a way that previously we haven't been able to do Halo

OP posts:
prettybird · 29/06/2023 18:51

@HappiDaze - glad you found the Lidl FFGY. I've found that sometimes Lidl goes through phases of it being in short supply. As a result I tend to always have one tub in reserve! Grin

Re the grapes: remember you are not a human trash can Hmm You didn't need to eat them. Shock

I'll admit that yesterday I came across an empty bag of mini eggs (Blush) in the pocket of a raincoat I was wearing after a gap of a few months. As I was about to put it in the bin, I realised that there was still one mini egg in the bag. Before I knew it, it was in my mouth ShockBlush I should really just have thrown it out along with the bag. I hadn't known it was there. I didn't need to eat if Hmm

LadyBird1973 · 29/06/2023 19:14

@prettybird, thanks for the reply. I definitely know my appetite has reduced and I'm not craving carbs like I used to. Although in all honesty, I would really like a piece of cake! But it's not a craving like it used to be.
I used a ketostick last week and it definitely showed purple, so I think I may be fat adapted. Hope so anyway! I do struggle with the water, although I'm trying to get through as much mint tea as I can. Probably too many coffees with cream though.
I have disposed of all the diet drinks that were in the house today though, spurred on by the Daily Mail (I know!) saying that Aspartame is probably carcinogenic! That did somewhat put me off the idea of a Diet Coke!

prettybird · 29/06/2023 19:31

@Passtheturkey - well done for de-lurking and for getting back to your lowest weight after the last BC Flowers

That's where I'm aspiring to get to and a wee bit more ! Grin ....only over a stone to go! Blush

OP posts:
prettybird · 29/06/2023 19:36

@Random789 (and @OldandTired66 ): I also seem to have a self-sabotage instinct when I get close to 11 stone Confused

I'm hoping and planning, with the support and motivation that Boot Camp provides, that this time I'll power through that "barrier" Smile

Baystard · 29/06/2023 20:40

I'm loving the chat on the thread but I'm feeling woefully inadequate in my cooking Grin I've eaten alot of eggs, cream, shoogled veg, cheese and red meat but none of your amazing recipes.

What are a bag of cheesies?

I’m unreasonably excited at the thought of a new approved emergency snack!

prettybird · 29/06/2023 21:42

@Coffeeandcherrypie - these are the Cheesies https://www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/cheesies-cheddar-snack-60039670?skuid=039670&utmcampaign=shopping&utmmedium=cpc&utmsource=google&&gbraid=0AAAAAD96OoIRuIQAoA6pB0fMQcLmZlca4&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1SkBhDwARIsANbGpFufycx7PMxV1SvKVodCdGftHs6iZuP5ooOo42-6K0I6JMp6C6P4CT8aAgqPEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds (sorry for the long link but when I tried to shorten it, the link wouldn't work Confused).

I've bought them in Sainsbury's: personally I don't like them as I find them too cheesie Shock but I know others like them.

OP posts:
HappiDaze · 29/06/2023 23:03

The was no skin on the chicken thighs which I bought in Lidl but that's why I decided to use the yogurt marinade because I'd read somewhere that that's what they like to do in countries that don't cook with chicken skin to keep it succulent.

It turned out really well and despite not being a huge fan of frying food in general I fried them in my large cast iron shallow casserole dish in lard. I have no idea why lard instead of oil but hey ho.

I had mine with salad and I braised the cabbage in the left over juices in the pan for 10 mins after adding some water, butter, soy sauce and lemon. I just made that up as I went along because I wanted it to have a salty zestiness to it. I also ate the cabbage and have some left over for tomorrow.

Next time I marinade with yogurt it'll be chicken tikka. M

EvenmoreDetermined · 29/06/2023 23:04

I find the cheesies too cheesy too, weird as I like my cheese STRONG. I buy the little bags with lots of different small wrapped cheeses in and use those for travel snacks
rather than Babybels.

I have poked myself with the pointy stick tonight and had spinach and mushroom omelette for dinner.

SummerSazz · 30/06/2023 00:47

Just popping on to say the chilli cheesies are the DB's!!! also like the Red Leicester but not the emmental. I'm an aficionado!!

I buy the small bags online and they usually send me some money off deals although not for a while. Will log onto the website and see if it triggers any.... they are usually shareable discounts so I'll pass on if it works

Doing well here although go on AI holiday on Sunday. Water makes a huge difference to my weigh loss so do stick at drinking all the water

TheOnlyMrsW · 30/06/2023 06:50

Ok day yesterday, although only just got enough water in.......I WFH permanently apart from very rare office days and have a tendency to sit in front of the laptop and not move for hours! Finding that if I get a couple of pints in early then it's easier for the day but didn't happen yesterday.

I try to get out and work from somewhere else at least once a week, yesterday was a nice coffee shop locally (we have Costa but all their food is carby). Ordered the breakfast bagel - smashed avocado, fried egg, bacon and halloumi with a portion of mushrooms and left the bagel part, with a flat white. That did me until dinner which was steak marinated with paprika, roast cauliflower and tender stem broccoli, snack of cheese with the TV. I was all for a glass of wine but DH talked me down 😊

Possibly challenging weekend as we're at a festival - local so a 20-minute drive, I'll be Des for the weekend so no alcohol but we know from experience that the food offering is burgers and hotdogs and not much around apart from takeaways. Plan is to eat here tonight before going out, then tomorrow DH is going early afternoon and I'll follow once DC has been dropped off at work so can do the same. Sunday is a longer day there so will need to get my head round that.......

Got all my tix for the band yesterday though so a happy bunny, and everything arrived for our favourite festival ever at the end of July so excited for that too 😊🎉🤘.

Have a good day everyone

ListenLinda · 30/06/2023 07:16

Sorry for being a bit quiet on the thread, work has gone crazy out of no where and it’s been rather hectic. My water slipped yesterday so i’m going to make an extra effort today. I likely won’t be moving from my laptop much so i’ll try get in the habit of some after every email 😁

Plans for the weekend include taking DCs to the local carnival, then it’s girls night for me. We usually order a takeaway and have a few drinks, not bothered about the alcohol but will have to plan ahead food wise, as we usually get chinese or pizza.

EvenmoreDetermined · 30/06/2023 07:23

For Chinese I usually order egg foo-yung, Chinese omelette, now, and chop suey is ok-ish too, mainly bean sprouts.

cheesenotoast · 30/06/2023 07:37

Went out for a long walk yesterday ( no pre planning on my part , so lunch was a sandwich , but less bread and lots of cheese , ham , mayo and lettuce ) not enough water ( no loos on the way round ) but over 17000 steps and a slightly burnt back ( wore a sundress with my walking boots )
I’d made a sort of ratatouille with aubergine, courgette and celeriac with the tomato sauce , added some cream and gratiné it , it was lovely

Re drinking water first thing: I used to need to drink orange juice preferably freshly squeezed first thing Shock. I would refuse to kiss dh until I'd woken up my mouth with the OJ Wink

I've managed to beak that addiction and a glass of water is sufficient to take away the sour taste and feel of my mouth in the morning.

I don't even think about having an OJ now. Halo

So it is possible to re-educate your palate. Grin

It's an exciting day ahead (not!) - open day and a barbeque at PILs care home Shock

I'll have brunch before I go: creamy coffee and an avocado salad, and then I'll not eat anything from the BBQ. Then we're away for a few days camping with DC and DGC. Tonight is soup and another BBQ but I will just have sausages, burger and salad, no bread.

I'm a daily weigher but won't be on the scales again until Wednesday. In the absence of any numbers to motivate me I just have to trust the process.
