Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:00

Evening all! I'm posting the week 2 chat thread this evening, as I know how keen everyone will be to post tomorrow. As I'm retired now, I no longer have to set an alarm to wake up, so I don't want to keep everyone waiting tomorrow morning to post.

I love this week. It's when we see how much people have lost, and it can be a significant amount. It can be a real leap of faith for anyone who hasn't low carbed before, and all those who really don't believe you can eat that much fat and still lose weight!

I'm really hoping that you've all had a good first week, and that your commitment 'to the cause' has been rewarded with a good result - be that on the scales, with your tape measure, or the currently-too-tight clothes that you've been trying on.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope very much that you've had a good first week, and that you're feeling supermotivated for the rest of Bootcamp.

However - if you haven't lost, or you have even gained, please don't be downhearted. We're all different, and there may be lots of reasons why this is the case for you. It's also really important to note that it's not a competition. We all lose at different rates - plus, anyone who is bigger will lose more/faster than someone who is smaller.

Hopefully there are other benefits to this WOE that will keep you on track - at the very least, I hope that you have been enjoying the food, and that you don't feel deprived, like you would be on a low calorie/fat diet.

@Jenasaurus definitely worth having a look at a few gyms, often the price is quite negotiable and there are likely to be discounts for blue light and other large local employers. I love my swanky pool at a nice hotel with spa which is between home and work. I pay less than DH does for his pretty standard/nice gym because I pay annually and get a tenuous corporate discount. They're also really good about freezing membership for a bit if needed for free if you pay annually.

FinallyHere · 20/01/2023 13:49

I just love being fat adapted and since I have plenty of fat to burn, very comfortable fasting esp if I am busy or travelling or otherwise without easy access to the kind of food I enjoy nowadays. So very different from the days before, where after a few hours without food I would get very 'hangry' and generally not pleasant to be around. And then use that as an excuse to mainline whatever was easiest to hand, coincidentally the sugary/fatty carbs and then hate myself afterwards.

DH still occasionally says 'but won't you get hungry' or what will you eat, forgetting that life is so much calmer and less driven these days.

@Linnet

Sorry your are having trouble updating the spreadsheet. I'm happy to do yours in your behalf, if you post or DM my the number (s)

Afternoon everyone.

Oh I missed the bread porn! Probably a good thing really, I was never a huge fan of bread until recent years. Itll probably be the one thing I'll miss but small price to pay for all the benefits that come with this woe!

Had yet another lovely sleep last night and woke up feeling slim, then I looked in the mirror and was brought back to reality 😅 I have a way to go but confidant I'm on the right path.

Today

B: FFGY
L: chicken wings and sprouts (on going to have to give the sprouts a rest for a while or I'll end up going off them like I did with broccoli ☹
D: pork burgers with hm coleslaw.

Oh and I had a coffee earlier with ff milk.

venusandmars · 20/01/2023 14:29

@TangledWebOfDeception I used to have such terrible period pains that I'd vomit Envy. One such morning I stuffed myself with pain killers and got on a plane to London. Had to be taken off in an ambulance in London with appendicitis. The doctor in hospital asked why I'd got on the flight when I was in such pain... "Oh I just thought it was period pain". He clearly didn't get it and walked awy looking really confused.

Amazing bread @prettybird

Talking of bread, I discovered another of dh's misdemeanours while was out on Wednesday. He got bread out of the freezer but it was my last 3 slices of SLC bread Shock I don't actually like it much so won't be buying any more but I was saving it for a time when I really, really needed something like toast. Thankfully I found it before he ate it (that would have been an expensive mistake) but now I have to eat it, so it's a treat wasted.

B - creamy coffee
L - chicken and vegetable soup, SLC bread with smoked salmon pate and salad
D - going to friends but will eat around any carbs and I'm taking the cheese and celery so can turn down pudding.

StuntNun · 20/01/2023 14:37

@Jenasaurus if you want an alternative to cows milk then look for unsweetened otherwise they will be as carby as dairy. I prefer almond milk but it took a while to get used to the taste and texture being different to cows milk.

On the deep fryer front, beef dripping or lard are the best fats to cook in but only if your deep fryer has a concealed element. If it's an open element then groundnut oil and rapeseed oil are the least worst fats to use. Light and mild olive oil is better from an inflammation point of view but it does tend to impart an olive-y flavour, particularly the first time it is used. I use my deep fryer for celeriac fries and low carb scotch eggs. It's also good for chicken wings and pork ribs but I usually use my air fryer for those.

Greatly · 20/01/2023 14:45

Just debating whether or not to order some SLC bread and rolls 🤔 I really like the hot cross buns they do but am sure they must be quite carby

Jenasaurus · 20/01/2023 15:14

@BIWI - Yes I can relate to that very much. I have now left the naughty corner :) I am planning next weeks meals and shopping list now. As long as I lose something each week, even if 1/2 a pound I am happy. To be honest I will probably have to eat like this for the rest of my life as more to do with keeping my BG levels low but it feels like a comfort blanket while losing weight, its the maintaining thats hard as you dont get the inspirational losses on the scales.

I had a very scary experience just now. Although I love my DS 2 whippets I am very scared of dogs and when my DD told me her mother goose costume had gone to number 17, I realised it was the family with the dog that is a bit of a nutter, friendly nutter though. Anyway I said I would try and collect it for her today. I forgot though and heard a bang at the door, went to answer it and in came the dog all barking and bouncy (probably just saying hello...but to me he was saying, I am here to terrorise you!) I embarrassingly screamed, and she apologised, and took her dog, I shouted thank you after her but felt such an idiot for being so ridiculous over what I think is a poodle cross! I hope to get over the fear one day but it just builds up when I get jumped at or one bounds over to me off lead.

BIWI · 20/01/2023 15:26

Yes @StuntNun my DFF has an open element - and the instructions specifically say not to use dripping or lard (or any solid fat). I never knew that was why though!

OP posts:
Stokey · 20/01/2023 16:18

@Jenasaurus that's sounds intense. One of my friends has a golden doodle I think and it's very bouncy, always jumping up. Can imagine if being quite scary if you don't know the dog.

I did better than anticipated yesterday as was concerned about my theatre dinner. A friend invited me for tapas and managed to stay lc with an amazing aubergine tartare, king prawns, and some mushrooms with cheese. Also didn't indulge in any of the alcohol on offer.

However to confess in advance eyes big stick warily I have a 50th to go to tonight so will be having some alcohol - gin & slimline. I have already decided to continue this phase of bootcamp for another week to compensate.

I got a delivery today and realised instead of buying 1 avocado, I'd bought 1 kilo - around 10! So hit me with your avo recipes 🥑

B: FFGY with cream
L: Roasted cauliflower soup with grated cheese
D: scallops and King prawns with veg, probably avocado!

Jenasaurus · 20/01/2023 16:21

thank you @StuntNun - I will look for unsweetened. When I stay at my sons house they have both oat milk and almond but no dairy as my son is lactose intolerant, I am not sure if its unsweetened but will bring my own when I sleep over just in case x

venusandmars · 20/01/2023 17:23

@Jenasaurus that is a very poorly trained dog, should never bark in someone else's house. Doodle crosses look very sweet but they can be quite crazy and need firm handling and consistent training.

TheMagicSword · 20/01/2023 17:51

I have got myself way behind on the thread, just spent ages reading to catch up!

I made bolognaise(ish) sauce last night. Piled it on big flat mushrooms, added cheese and baked. Went down well! I’m even managing to cook pasta for the kids without picking at it.

In anticipation of BC-light, does anyone know of any mini dark choc bars? I just can’t have a full one in the house, I’ll eat it in a day. I might buy one of the Aldi ones and ask DH to hide it and dole out a daily portion (but he’ll probably eat it all…)

Whipping up a quick cheese sauce to pour over veg is fast becoming my favourite way to add fat, might be helpful for those who are struggling to get the fat on their plate. Also crunched my way through some crackling tonight!

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 17:56

@TheMagicSword I think there's an 80 or 90% Moser Roth bar that comes in smaller bars (it's packaged like one big one but individually wrapped bars inside).

I use crackling in place of croutons in salads. Looking forward to a Caesar-esque salad one of these days!

prettybird · 20/01/2023 18:09

@TheMagicSword - Green & Black do little bars. I see them at our local greengrocer-cum-deli.

Talking of chocolate, the lovely lady in front of me at Lidl tried to buy me the bar of 74% chocolate I had on the conveyor belt Smile (I'd already done my shopping and had gone back in to get it long story ) and I had to say that there was no point as I was getting it for free - and that the voucher expired today! Shock

I said I'd still pay forward the thought of her good deed anyway Flowers

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 18:13

Hmm yes I used to like the little variety bars of G&B, but I think they use palm oil now. AngryAngry

StuntNun · 20/01/2023 18:31

@TheMagicSword Sainsburys sell 5x20g bars of chocolate but they don't always have them in stock. They're quite hard to spot as they look like a normal big chocolate bar.

BIWI · 20/01/2023 18:53

I think Sainsbury's have stopped doing those now - or at least, you can't find them online.

This is the Aldi one

Hope it's okay to ask here instead of looking it up on the useful products thread...

What's the company that does the low carb bread, again? I've never tried it! Would love some for the odd weekend where I really fancy boiled egg and soldiers!

StuntNun · 20/01/2023 19:52

@TangledWebOfDeception https://seriouslylowcarb.com/

stayathomegardener · 20/01/2023 20:06

Goodness these first two threads have moved fast!
Catching up has taken a while,
6lb lost in week one which feels good, thanks so much for adding me to the spreadsheet @FinallyHere .
Difficult week as both my business email and online booking systems have "plug in" faults so that's been all consuming, would have been super easy to lapse into carbs to manage this so I'm very pleased
Strangely I'm struggling with water still so trying to focus on that.

Emailed myself some delicious sounding recipes for the weekend posted by @venusandmars

I received your very generous kefir starter @StuntNun it's bubbling away very happily, I promise it a good home and hopefully a long life. Thank you.

stayathomegardener · 20/01/2023 20:09

@Savedmybacon and @TangledWebOfDeception another undiagnosed ADHDer here.
I end up screenshotting, bookmarking and making notes so my replies are semi coherent.

DryWhiteagainW · 20/01/2023 20:09

Prettybird that’s a stunning loaf.

ivd just made the most disgusting turkey and beef mince burgers. Left out the usual breadcrumbs and they were so dry, honestly I feel as if I’ve eaten a brick. The upside is I won’t feel hungry for days Hmm
served with portobello mushrooms, fried tomatoes and green beans sautéed with garlic,

B. Smoked salmon omelette
L. Chicken and veg soup

stayathomegardener · 20/01/2023 20:10

prettybird · 20/01/2023 10:57

I'll brave @BIWI's big stick Shock and post up a picture @TangledWebOfDeception Grin

Dh prefers white bread so it's almost all white bread flour - although I do use about 10+g of wholemeal rye flour in the starter per 600g loaf.

That bread is instagrammable very clever.

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 20:10

Thanks @StuntNun!

Meals today:

L: Accidentally skipped it. Busy day and it just ran away with me. Was about 4 PM when I realised I hadn’t eaten. Decided not to have a snack as didn’t feel hungry. Cup of ‘toast and jam’ tea instead with a little spoon of double cream.

D: Bit of a random selection as DH was having leftovers and I didn’t want to cook, but sort of worked as a LC ploughman’s.

Handful each of baby tomatoes, mini cucumbers, radishes, plus 2 celery stalks. Thick slice of ham, 2 boiled eggs, a bit of my homemade piccalilli, and a little wedge of lovely, gooey Somerset Brie (I went back for seconds of that).

Bit low on fats today although I’ve had several spoons of cream and a slice of butter. Also drizzled some olive oil onto the tomatoes and cucumbers.

Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!
Brassbumblebee · 20/01/2023 20:38

Oooh that looks delicious @TangledWebOfDeception 🤤

I'm super full from dinner, I made the HM coleslaw but this time I grated all the veg and what a difference it made! In the past I've done my best to finely slice it but this way is so much better.

Who's excited for mondays weigh in!? 🙋‍♀️
