Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:00

Evening all! I'm posting the week 2 chat thread this evening, as I know how keen everyone will be to post tomorrow. As I'm retired now, I no longer have to set an alarm to wake up, so I don't want to keep everyone waiting tomorrow morning to post.

I love this week. It's when we see how much people have lost, and it can be a significant amount. It can be a real leap of faith for anyone who hasn't low carbed before, and all those who really don't believe you can eat that much fat and still lose weight!

I'm really hoping that you've all had a good first week, and that your commitment 'to the cause' has been rewarded with a good result - be that on the scales, with your tape measure, or the currently-too-tight clothes that you've been trying on.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope very much that you've had a good first week, and that you're feeling supermotivated for the rest of Bootcamp.

However - if you haven't lost, or you have even gained, please don't be downhearted. We're all different, and there may be lots of reasons why this is the case for you. It's also really important to note that it's not a competition. We all lose at different rates - plus, anyone who is bigger will lose more/faster than someone who is smaller.

Hopefully there are other benefits to this WOE that will keep you on track - at the very least, I hope that you have been enjoying the food, and that you don't feel deprived, like you would be on a low calorie/fat diet.

@Jenasaurus - I hate the taste of celery but I love celeriac Grin

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 11:00

A little tip for courgetti in case it helps anyone: I couldn’t get on with the spiraliser - too much faff - so I just use a peeler to make long strips. However I don’t cook it at all, instead I just season it and then add piping hot pasta sauce. It stays quite firm that way and gives you something akin to that al dente pasta feel in the mouth.

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 11:01

(Plus the more raw veg you eat the better fibre intake for keeping things moving)

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 11:06

Ah @prettybird that truly is a thing of beauty!

Jenasaurus · 20/01/2023 11:06

@prettybird - How are you feeling today? I will give celeriac a try and let you know how I get on.

I had a food shop delivered today, mainly veg and meat, plus yoghurt, just got enough to last until Monday, is it then we change to low carb but calorie counting as well @BIWI

What is a good alternative to cows milk that we can have from next week, is Almond milk better than oat milk?

Looking forward to next weeks weigh in, hope to have at least another pound loss. My sons 30th on 19th Feb, a group of us are staying the weekend in a farmhouse near Bristol, 2 hot tubs and a games room, havent seen a lot of the people since I was nearly 5 stone heavier so will be nice to see their reaction.

I'll brave @BIWI's big stick Shock and post up a picture @TangledWebOfDeception Grin

Dh prefers white bread so it's almost all white bread flour - although I do use about 10+g of wholemeal rye flour in the starter per 600g loaf.

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 11:08

Dear God NO, not calorie counting!!

<Shudders at the memory of that BC> Wink

Nugg · 20/01/2023 11:10

@prettybird wow that loaf is spectacular - clever you!!

@BIWI I thought I had read something saying deep frying wasn't good but then couldn't find it so went for it! Chips were pretty good, I cooked slightly longer than regular chips but they still didn't crisp up the same, they were still lovely - tasted like roast parsnips so I am going to try them slightly chunkier on a roast over the weekend.

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 11:12

Yes the only sad thing about celeriac is you can’t get it to crispen up properly like you can with potato. Never mind.

FinallyHere · 20/01/2023 11:16

the taste and texture delivered as much as the appearance

What fab-u-lous feedback to receive on your bread, congratulations.

FinallyHere · 20/01/2023 11:22

@Nugg vodka & fresh lime (so long as it really is just a squeezed lime rather than out of a bottle) is a holiday favourite tipple for me.

It hardly even tastes sour when my tastebuds are used to bootcamping. I'm happy to order it as my first drink, with still water on the side and keep topping it up with water all night.

FinallyHere · 20/01/2023 11:26

Ooohhh @prettybird

that loaf is indeed a thing of beauty and it delivers on taste and texture, too. Ooohhhhhh.

prettybird · 20/01/2023 11:28

I'm still feeling a bit grotty Sad - if anything worse today than I felt yesterday, when I did feel a bit better Confused

Not bad enough to stop me doing stuff (although I've held off doing my exercise DVD) but a low level pain/cramps across my lower abdomen. According to my Fitbit, my sleep is still disturbed with more light sleep than deep sleep Hmm

I was fortunate and ever really suffered from bad period pains but this is what I imagine they felt like Sad

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 11:42

In years gone by my periods were so bad that I was actually pleasantly surprised by how ‘easy’ labour was. Hmm

Thankfully they got milder as i got older and now with LC the only thing I ever get (if that!) is a very slight ache.

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 11:43

@prettybird hope you feel better soon! Flowers

BIWI · 20/01/2023 13:03

@Jenasaurus

just got enough to last until Monday, is it then we change to low carb but calorie counting as well @BIWI

NO!

I have to ask you now, at this point, have you actually read Bootcamp rules, or the prep thread or the FAQ that I've posted before? Because, if you had, you'd know that we don't count calories on Bootcamp!

On Monday, you have the opportunity - if you want to - to move on to Bootcamp Light, which allows you to eat some fruit (preferably berries), some nuts/seeds (but please check the carb counts of those as they vary enormously, some chocolate - at least 70% cocoa content and some alcohol - dry wine, clear spirits + low calorie mixer in moderation

That's all. We don't start counting anything!

@Nugg

I thought I had read something saying deep frying wasn't good

Probably said only by someone from the Low Fat Brigade!

However, and TBF, it's not really recommended to cook with vegetable or seed oils these days, because they are too high in Omega-6:

See here

... but once in a while I'd have thought is OK.

@prettybird that bread is a work of art!

Sorry you're still feeling poorly Flowers

Thanks for the response, I did read it but had got confused as saw another reply to someone else indicating that after the 2 weeks we could be more wary of our intake, understood now though :) I will go and sit in the naughty corner for a bit :)

Overall, on Bootcamp, you eat till you're satisfied. It's not a WOE that's about deprivation, or feeling hungry.

That doesn't mean, though, that you can eat massive/over-large portions.

In the initial two weeks, when we're transitioning from carb-burning to fat-burning, it's important not to let yourself get hungry between meals, which is why it's especially key to eat till you're satisfied.

After that, i.e. from next week, you shouldn't be hungry between meals. At that point, your appetite will naturally decrease, in which case it is logical that your portion sizes may need to decrease. But it's not about counting calories.

As you near your target, you may find that you do need to count calories, to keep the rate of loss going - this will, naturally, slow down the nearer you are to your goal.

I think you are pretty near your goal - but your rate of loss is still pretty reasonable, so I wouldn't worry about calories for now.

@BIWI you're right I haven't eaten as much veg this week, it might just be that. In saying that though so far today, touch wood, I've felt ok 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'll see how I do.
I didn't manage to put my weight on the Google sheets as for some reason I can't get into them on my iPad. But I'm sure I'm meant to drink 2 litres of water a day but I try to aim for 3. However I haven't been as good as that this past week as I usually am so will work on that.

I had yogurt for breakfast today and I'm having leftover homemade kebabs and tzatziki for lunch plus some olives and feta and pickled cucumber and onions so I'll see how I go.not sure what's for dinner yet.

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 13:26

A good illustration of what portion control looks like for me - I easily get into habits such as 2 or 3 eggs for lunch. Cheese after dinner because it's a lovely way to round off a meal. And so on. However there's a point on LCHF where suddenly your appetite decreases - this is because fat is now your body's primary source of fuel. So if I then start to feel satisfied before I've finished my meal, I know that I can take my next portion down a bit - 1 or 2 eggs instead of 2 or 3, for example. No cheese after dinner, or a bit less of the protein/veg elements in the meal, if I'd rather have the cheese.

Once fat adapted I never eat a meal unless I'm actually hungry - If I don't fancy lunch I won't have any. If in the late afternoon I start to feel I could do with a little something, I might then have a couple of boiled eggs or a slice of chicken, some cheese cubes or a small serving of nuts. Preferably some veg with it, but not always. Then when dinner comes around I will add extra veg since I didn't have any at lunch. If it gets to dinner time and I'm really not hungry, I might make a broth or light soup just for the nutritional aspects.

Nugg · 20/01/2023 13:39

@FinallyHere great idea I dont like sweet drinks, not really been a fan of vodka but will try it! Love a mojito it cant be that different 😉

@BIWI definitely not a regular thing to deep fry but they were good!

Plain salad with ham egg and cheese and mayo for lunch. ,ater going down much better using my son's soda stream!

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 13:40

(Conversely, if I feel more hungry than usual on some days, I am very happy to increase portion size until I am properly sated. For this reason I tend to stay away from bonus things such as snacks/LC treats/daily square of choc/etc - I'd rather be able to have more on the days i need it.

TangledWebOfDeception · 20/01/2023 13:41

Oops, dropped the ')' Hate that!!
