Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - the final weigh-in!

BIWI · 14/03/2022 09:16

Morning all.

Here, for its last outing this Bootcamp is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I know the last couple of weeks have been a bit quiet, and apologies for Covid-related absence from me as well, but it looks like this has been a pretty successful Bootcamp, which is great.

I don't know when the next Bootcamp will be, but probably won't be till around May at some point. However, we'll keep this thread going in the interim.

Don't forget to have a good rummage around the other threads in the Bootcamp topic in the interim, especially the recipe threads, as there's lots of useful stuff there.

And thank you to everyone who has posted, helped to support other posters and even those who have just lurked at the back! I genuinely wouldn't have even half the motivation to do this without you. This is a rather lovely little corner of Mumsnet.

OK. Apropos of nothing, I'm just coming here to confess I've just eaten almost 500g, the whole darn pack, of Aldi Belly Pork slices. Roasted in oven until fat rendered beautifully and seasoned with fennel seeds.
Oh. My. God. Blush

stayathomegardener · 22/03/2022 15:43

Long story compressed @BIWI I had a terrible reaction to one of the last live flu jabs in 2003 and ended up with a complete system breakdown, gut, neurological, fibromyalgia, autoimmune, essentially CFS.

My daughter then had glandular fever 10 years later at 13 and a very similar thing happened to her.

She was lucky enough to be taken on by Dr Sarah Myhill and her first line of treatment was a PK diet. (Funny how galvanised one becomes when it's one's child!)
I joined her for moral support and recovered from CFS after about two years, not 100% I couldn't run for example but everything else was great.

Contracted covid 13/03/20 when you weren't officially allowed to have it Hmm and knew immediately I was in the same position. I was actually more scared of CFS than the struggling to breathe and that was pretty horrid.

I lost two stone in the acute phase plus went straight into menopause and then put it back on plus two stone more using sugar to supplement energy to a degree I could semi function.

It's been absolutely bizarre.

I've been constantly physically improving this last year but the jump since boot camp 17/01/22 has been astronomical.

I'm managing 7 hour days twice a week gardening commercially this last fortnight (I'm a garden designer) and ok I'm exhausted afterwards but prior to this I couldn't even attempt it.

There's also an element of de conditioning too which may account for exhaustion.

Not so short 😂

BIWI · 22/03/2022 16:29

Wow! What a time of it you've (both) had. So glad you seem to be recovering well, and very pleased if Bootcamp helped you with your recovery Flowers

wilko that made me laugh. 500g is a hell of a lot of meat, but at least it wasn’t 500g of chocolate and crisps? (Searching for bright side.)

stayathomegardener what a trial. Sorry you’ve been through so much but very pleased to hear something—this—is working for you. It’s okay to be tired after seven hours of gardening, blimey!

Meanwhile, it all kicked off with one Hormoaner—not his fault, it was a perfect storm of frustration all around and I was not my “best self”— so the Gnarly Peanut Chicken has been postponed until tomorrow.

Ready meals, hoorah!!!

Wilkolampshade · 22/03/2022 21:20

@ShagMeRiggins Blush tbf I was faced across the table with this one whimpering quietly so I probs didn't eat absolutely all of it as she had a saucer or two herself. But my goodness. So incredibly good, and cheap, and satisfying!

Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - the final weigh-in!
ShagMeRiggins · 22/03/2022 21:37

Belly pork slices are always less expensive and an absolute gem on this WOE, Wilko.

You can’t get me with the dog, though. Nice try! I would never hurt an animal, would help when I could, but not an animal lover. Is that okay here??!!

Having said that, beautiful dog. Hope she enjoyed her privilege. Grin

Wilkolampshade · 22/03/2022 21:43

Well let's face it, she didn't make me eat them... That's all on me. 😋

Jezzballs2000 · 23/03/2022 09:11

Morning all, I've been a bit rubbish and got out of the habit of this WOE. Mainly from staying at my parents house a lot over the past few weeks, thinking I would IF and ending up eating bread for breakfast and lunch. In the classic way I then used this as a justification to eat other forbidden items. I'm moving back in LC and feeling motivated which is good but I realise that organisation is actually more critical.

Also I have done something to my MN settings so the chat starts at the bottom and scrolls upwards, and now has much more messages per page. I thought this would be better but on my phone it makes it tricky to keep track or post. I will sort this out now!

Anyway, excuses aside, I've been enjoying the the thread as always. Great food inspiration, and lots of empathy and sharing.

@ShagMeRiggins I think you settled on Hormoaners- I think that is the best one.

@BIWI glad you're on the mend, and hope everyone else is.

@Bookaholic73 nice to see you getting inspired!

pinknsparkly · 23/03/2022 17:22

@Jezzballs2000 - I 100% agree with the hormoaners vs hormoners. I think I'd buy @ShagMeRiggins' book based entirely on the use of that word Grin

My appetite is still completely AWOL (and I'm still testing positive for covid on day 9). I know it's normal to not get so hangry on this WOE, but this is definitely definitely abnormal for me and I'm looking forward to getting at least a bit of an appetite back. I had a bowl of shroogled leeks for dinner last night as it was the only thing (other than hot buttery golden toast which I fortunately didn't have in the house!) that my stomach didn't turn at the thought of! It's so weird to have completely lost all enjoyment or pleasure in food as I've always been a greedy sausage.... At the moment, I could easily just continue living on pints of hot squash and mugs of tea!

carbibarbie · 23/03/2022 20:13

Hi everyone, I don't know if you remember but asked for some help with starting this WOE after having my baby 9 months ago. I was worried about breastfeeding whilst in even mild ketosis and also about my milk supply, however, I pushed on and followed the rules of the light boot camp (except diet cokes GrinConfused) I wanted to thank you for your encouragement. No tracking, no hunger, easy peasy to stick with and in the 3 weeks I've been doing it, I've lost a mega 11 pounds! Thanks so much and well done on everyone's losses Daffodil

carbibarbie · 23/03/2022 20:15

(I've changed my username since then so apologies)

Andi2020 · 23/03/2022 22:13

Well done @carbibarbie
@pinknsparkly get Well soon bloody covid go away.
@ShagMeRiggins love that hormoanersSmile you always put a smile on my face with some of your posts and I have 2 dd 18 and 17 and a ds 13 so have alot off teen drama.
Monday morning squabbling over school uniforms I don't miss this now I'm back in office. But miss my home comforts and having to dress up for office is a pain after 18 months in joggers and sweatshirt.

NigellaAwesome · 23/03/2022 22:17

Well done @carbibarbie!

@ShagMeRiggins I agree with hormoaners. I have managed to upset both of mine this evening, and of corse it's totally my fault

@stayathomegardener blimey, you've really been through it. I'm so glad to hear that bootcamp has worked for you. I'm also interested to hear you are a garden designer as I'm grappling with a design at the moment and truly appreciate the talent involved in it (which I evidently don't have). If you fancy a remote commission let me know!

stayathomegardener · 24/03/2022 07:06

Thank you for the kind words, such a lovely supportive group.

@NigellaAwesome pm me your conundrum, I'll happily brainstorm it and offer planting solutions. I am only a plant based designer though and use the skills of others for the structural hard landscaping side so maybe not what you need.

ShagMeRiggins · 24/03/2022 14:29

I love this group. It’s my happy place.

Thanks to all for Hormoaner votes—that feels decided.

The Gnarly Peanut Chicken was delicious again last night—cooked properly with chicken pieces rather than a whole chicken, which was also quite delicious.

Tonight’s intended delight is some form of lamb stew. I have diced lamb defrosting, some potatoes and carrots and celery available, but that’s feeling too high carb for me. Nice array of lettuce available (romaine, radicchio, gem, spinach, “live” lettuce Hmm) but nothings really grabbing me.

To be honest, I’ve been cooking so much this week, and it’s been a shit week #hormoaners, that all I want is a kebab.

Without the pita bread, obviously.

Okay, off to do some more invoicing! That May trip to Porto & Paris isn’t going to pay for itself!

WATER WATER WATER!

SpottyBumPony · 24/03/2022 16:15

I had a KFC. Chicken fillet tower meal. I ate about 6 chips, most of the burger and half the diet coke.

It wasn't as nice as I remember it being, I can't explain why I ate it. It left me feeling like it wasn't worth it though so that's good.

and I've had to make a couple of dashes to the loo at work Blush

Bookaholic73 · 24/03/2022 16:22

Ah crap! I had some choc chip cookies yesterday, and have also eaten some bread today.

I know why, it’s because I hadn’t planned or prepped anything to eat. So I was starving as I’d been out all day, and just needed to eat something.

So I’ll sit down this evening and plan a few days worth of breakfasts and lunches.

Onelittlepiglet · 25/03/2022 04:34

Hello all, I’m still here and still low carbing. After a couple weeks of my weight staying the same and tantalisingly close to the next stone, today or finally tipped over to under 12 stone! I am so happy! I’ve lost 1 stone and 2lbs since 1st Jan, but am now in a new stone bracket. It’s the motivation to KOKO and I am determined to hit my next milestone of 11st 7lbs - I think it will slow and steady but that is fine with me. Smile

Hope everyone else is doing ok. @Bookaholic73 I know what you mean about planning - as long as I have a few things in the fridge I don’t get tempted to eat anything I shouldn’t, but it can be really hard!

Cancancannon · 25/03/2022 07:17

Morning all. I stayed away last night in a fancy hotel with DH as a belated Xmas present from his brother. However when I looked in the mirror in the bathroom mirror I was horrified to see dimpled jiggly skin all over!! I never used to look like this but I’m not sure if it’s age, a temporary weightloss thing or what? I have definitely lost weight with this WOE though I’m not weighing myself. Please tell me it’s temporary 😟

MatchaTea · 25/03/2022 22:32

@carbibarbie I would like to put little warning for high fat diets during lactation as they will affect the expression of genes involved in Autism. Go low carb if you wish to do so, but I wouldn't go high fat whilst you are still breastfeeding .

Research "High fat diet lactation and Autism " and you will have a lot of medical literature on the topic. " A few conclusions here :

  1. A Maternal High-Fat Diet during Early Development Provokes Molecular Changes Related to Autism Spectrum Disorder
  2. Evidence from epidemiological studies indicates that maternal obesity and metabolic complications increase the risk of offspring developing behavioral disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and schizophrenia.
  3. A maternal high-fat diet (HFD) during pregnancy and lactation changes the level of proteins associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ...

Maybe consider waiting a few weeks or a few months to go back to high fats . This is not restricted to the Low Carb community, many have high fat intake in general.

BIWI · 25/03/2022 23:15

@MatchaTea can you provide some reputable links to support all those claims please?

Without those, it's very difficult for anyone to know if what you're posting is reliable. And without them it doesn't really look very helpful Hmm

I can put plenty. Will you care to read them ?

and dozens and dozens more . High fat diets disturb gene expression, so women who are pregnant or lactating should NOT be on high fat diet .

BIWI · 25/03/2022 23:37

Of course I would read them - why would I have asked otherwise? Hmm But it's not on to post as you did without those links. Otherwise it just looks like you're pushing a particular agenda.

No.

Without links to the info/studies all you were doing was fear mongering.
