Here's a link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness lovingly managed by @ouchmyfeet.

I've added a couple of names that I've spotted this evening, but they're at the bottom of the list not alphabetised - if your name isn't on the list, add yours at the bottom, and we'll re-alphabetise it once we get going.

Morning all, have finally caught up with the thread! That cheeseburger pie looks fab, I am going to have to add it to my plan for next week.

Good couple of days here, have stuck to plan and managed to resist the giant bar of fruit and nut (one of my favourites Sad) that OH tucked into last night.

Can't remember who posted above about the eggs but I am the same, can't abide cold scrambled eggs! Always heat the mug when I have egg in a cup too and rarely order eggs in a hotel as they always come out cold.

Yesterday (no breakfast beyond an 11am creamy coffee as I fast regularly):

L: leftover cottage pie (celeriac mash) with extra buttered veg
T: chicken satay (I know no nuts but the satay sauce was homemade and my portion contained less than a tablespoon of peanut butter) with cauliflower rice and stir fried veg

NO WINE OR CHOCOLATE.

I did nibble on cheese as a mid afternoon snack. Have discovered that Boursin comes in little individual sized portions which is quite dangerous

Plan for today:

L: leftover halloumi sprouts (to the PP who asked for harissa ideas, I'm afraid this is all I ever use harissa for Blush, it's a small jar though so doesn't take long to get through it)
T: salmon fillets with celeriac and leek mash. Haven't decided what to do with the salmon to liven it up yet

Resolving to keep up with the thread better today. We've got this, KOKO.

By the way, talking about the spreadsheet, if you haven't already then have a good read of the stuff that's on the tabs at the bottom. Especially the resources. There's loads of interesting stuff there.

There's also what we termed 'ubercamp' which is 3 days of carb-counted, low carb meals. One plan is meat-based and one is fish-based (I never got round to doing one for vegetarians, so I should work on that!). They also have shopping lists to go with them.

I’m finding it all a bit hard, up with hunger pains in the night and feel really shaky and ‘fragile’ this morning.
Cutting the sugar has been a big shock! Like I drink about 6 cups of tea a day with 2 sugars, loads of 7up and chocolate most of the day. To go from that to none is hard, but I’m hoping things will balance out soon.
I got the jitters anyway, but my usual cure was more sugar so this is definitely a challenge.

I had fried tomatoes and mushrooms with cheese for breakfast. I don’t normally eat any of that but it was nice! Good luck everyone else today.

BIWI · 19/01/2022 09:15

If you are hungry @3luckystars then you must eat something. Low carb, of course.

If you are used to eating a lot of carbs then this will come as a shock to your system - but it will pass.

Make sure you're eating plenty of fat and drinking plenty of water. Also, it's important to make sure you're getting enough of the key electrolytes, sodium, magnesium and potassium.

Cook with salt and add it to your food - you could also try drinking a hot drink made from an Oxo cube, or Bovril, or Marmite. For potassium, you could also try using Lo-Salt on your food. Good food sources generally are salmon, avocado, full fat natural yoghurt and spinach.

A supplement like Zero by High5 is also a good idea.

If it's really bad, try adding in a slice of wholemeal toast for a couple of days, to up your carbs a bit, and then taper them down again.

But persevere - you will really feel much better in a day or so Flowers

@ouchmyfeet

Have discovered that Boursin comes in little individual sized portions which is quite dangerous

Why do you think it's dangerous?! Perfect low carb food!

Re the salmon fillets, marinate them for about 30-45 minutes in olive oil, lemon juice and add some finely chopped ginger and garlic. Then wrap in foil and bake in a hot oven for about 15 minutes. Delicious!

OP posts:
ouchmyfeet · 19/01/2022 09:20

I just meant that it's expensive, and I try to limit my boursin consumption because it makes me smell like garlic Wink

Good idea for the salmon, thanks BIWI

ouchmyfeet · 19/01/2022 09:24

@3luckystars I got sugar cravings when I went cold turkey previously, it is hard when you eat stuff but it doesn't hit the mark for what your body is actually craving. Don't feel bad about having something really high in fat or snacking at the start, I found it the best way. It's only for a couple of days and then you won't feel so shaky or reliant on snacks when your blood sugar settles. I used to have a thick slice of cheddar and spread butter on the top, a couple of those would always satisfy me.

3luckystars · 19/01/2022 09:28

Thank you that is great advice.

BIWI · 19/01/2022 09:36

I can also highly recommend Marmite Cheese Bites if you don't want the garlic @ouchmyfeet!

0.2g carbs each, and they're really savoury as well as cheesey and very much hit the spot

For those of you who may have missed this on the prep thread here is a link to the FAQ thread

Have a read of the question about carb flu, as by now some of you may be experiencing some of the symptoms.

StuntNun · 19/01/2022 09:47

Ouchmyfeet when my (Irish) husband makes egg in a cup he scoops a little of the water from boiling the eggs into the cup to warm it. I always steam my eggs in a fan steamer so that doesn't really work for me though.

LizzyBennett · 19/01/2022 09:49

Thank you @prettybird - I'll have a look now.

BIWI · 19/01/2022 09:58

Cheeseburger pie has been mentioned a few times now - it's a great recipe, really tasty and very easy. It is on the recipe thread, but here it is:

Cheeseburger pie

500g minced beef
50g finely chopped onion (or use shallots for a lower carb result)
150g chopped mushrooms
100mls double cream
2 heaped tablespoons of mayo
150g mature cheddar grated
3 eggs
Worcestershire sauce
salt & pepper to taste

  1. Fry mince, onion and mushrooms together until cooked; season to taste, add a sloosh of Worcestershire sauce
  1. Place in a greased pie dish*, flatten with spoon
  1. Beat eggs and then add mayo, cream and cheese and stir together
  1. Pour over the top of mince and bake in oven Gas mark 5 for 20 to 25 mins until set and golden brown

This freezes very well.

Lovely with salad, cauli mash, or stir fry (Great in lunchboxes when it's cooled)

  • the first few times I made this I mis-read the instructions and was putting the mince mixture into a casserole dish. It works, but not as well as if you put it into a baking tin - a bit like one you'd use for making brownies. Then the final result is something more solid, that you can cut into squares.

Day four and clearly something metabolic is happening as I’m incredibly smelly Blush. DH is away helping my mum out for a few days and when DD brought me a cup of tea in bed this morning she said ‘omg, mum, are you low carbing again? It really stinks in here! 🤣. Even I can smell it though, it’s like I’ve got ketones oozing out of my pores. I know the drill. KOKO and drink the water.

BIWI · 19/01/2022 10:03

... and don't forget all the fat!

Oneborneverydecade · 19/01/2022 10:05

I'm taking DS15 to the orthodontist today. He usually asks for a McDonalds. To preempt that I've come into a cafe in town for a full English. Never been here before but it's full of older people celebrating a birthday. It reminds me of Desmond's (if Desmond's was a cafe in a non diverse SE town).
The birthday boy just sent over some birthday cake (I resisted). What a lovely start to the day

StuntNun · 19/01/2022 10:20

I find McDonalds isn't too bad OneBorn if you order through the screens you can remove buns and sweet sauces and sometimes add extra bacon or extra cheese. I used to go a lot when my kids were younger and order a double cheeseburger and a side salad. The only downside is their salad dressings so I used to take a pot of homemade vinaigrette with me!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 19/01/2022 10:33

Morning all. I’m pleased to say my headache has lifted today and feeling much better.

Started the day with some Greek yoghurt and cinnamon for breakfast. Am I able to sprinkle some chopped Brazil nuts on top? It’s on the green list and less than 5g per 100g carbs, but I also know one of the rules was no nuts yet!

Also, I’m wondering if anyone could advise on what I could eat at a meal out with friends tomorrow night. We’re going to an Indian restaurant. I’m happy to go without rice, naan, poppadoms etc obviously, but is there something that might naturally be low in sugar, high protein, high fat that would be a good choice for me to not completely jeopardise my efforts?!

@CoffeeChocolateWine no nuts yet, I'm afraid!

Best choice in an Indian restaurant would be the dry curries - so anything tikka or tandoori. I quite often choose a chicken shashlik, which is a chicken tikka kebab, on a skewer with onion, tomato and pepper.

For a side dish, mushroom or cauliflower or spinach bjaji (the curry side dishes, not in batter, obviously!). Sometimes have spinach paneer, which is an Indian cheese.

Morning all, must make some cheeseburger pie!!

I've tested positive for Covid and feeling rough!!

Have taken some painkillers and topping up on my water, hoping I'll feel hungry later Sad

DarkCorner · 19/01/2022 11:40

Hello!

@ZiggZagg - sorry to hear about the positive test. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Loving the sound of buttery cabbage - I haven't eaten any for ages but might put one on my shopping list.

Still going here, although I think one of DPs noodles got into my curry last night!

B - normally do IF but was starving so had a boiled egg
L - will be spinach and rocket salad with chorizo and feta and an olive oil dressing
D - will be chilli with asparagus and broccoli.

I need to go and get some vinegar as I finished the apple cider last night and only have balsamic in. Any recommendations for good salad dressing recipes? I normally just do oil, vinegar and mustard.

I'm planning to make the cauliflower cheese soup for lunch tomorrow as it's my day off.

AllTheBlackCoffee · 19/01/2022 12:01

@BIWI more than happy to share my plan if you think it will help others. Some of the recipes are in my head so might not mean much to anyone but me but I can add them to the recipe thread when I get a sec.

It's on a PowerPoint so don't think I can post that on here but I've taken some screenshots and can send it via another route if you want to add it to the SOF.

@ZiggZagg sorry to hear that Flowers

For lunch I'm having broccoli and stilton soup with a swirl of truffle oil.
