Here's a link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness lovingly managed by @ouchmyfeet.

I've added a couple of names that I've spotted this evening, but they're at the bottom of the list not alphabetised - if your name isn't on the list, add yours at the bottom, and we'll re-alphabetise it once we get going.

Working from the office for the first time since before Christmas and there's a bloody great box of Quality Street sitting in the middle. Fuxsake.

BIWI · 18/01/2022 09:58

I've been asked (via PM) if drinking all this water is dangerous.

It's true that too much water can cause hyponatremia, or water intoxication. And the problem with drinking a lot of water (usually we're talking about endurance athletes here, or drug takers - ecstasy, I think is the culprit) is that it seriously depletes your electrolytes. The key electrolyte is sodium:

Sodium helps maintain the balance of fluids inside and outside of cells. When sodium levels drop due to excessive water consumption, fluids travel from the outside to the inside of cells, causing them to swell

When this happens to brain cells, it can be dangerous and even life threatening

From Medical News Today

It's not just about drinking too much water though, it's also about drinking too much water too quickly - i.e. not spreading it out through the day.

On a low carb diet though, drinking water is especially important. When your body stores carbs, which is what is happening when we eat a high carbohydrate diet, it holds onto water. For every 1 gram of carbs you store, you’ll store an average of 4 grams of water. Once these carbs are removed from your diet, water will come along with it, so it’s important to maintain proper fluid levels when you’re low carbing. Dehydration can make you feel quite poorly, making you feel tired, as if you’re going down with something, and can lead to headaches.

This is why we drink more water when low carbing:

Your body goes through major metabolic transitions as you become a fat burner. Here’s why adequate fluid levels are crucial:

1. you need to replace lost water
As mentioned previously, your body stores water when carbohydrates are present. When carbs are eliminated, water is also flushed out.

2. it curbs cravings and regulates appetite
Often, when you experience hunger pangs or sugar cravings when you’re low carbing, it’s most likely because you’re dehydrated. Make it a habit to reach for a glass of water instead of a sugary treat when these cravings arise.

3. it puts less stress on your kidneys
Ketones are acidic and some of these ketone bodies are flushed out instead of used for fuel to ensure they don’t accumulate in the body. Drinking more water supports the kidneys’ role of filtering out any unnecessary toxins that may be lingering.

4. water helps fat metabolise faster
The process of beta oxidation (where fats are broken down) requires water molecules. Burning fat costs more water during the process compared to carbs which means more water consumption will help your body break fats down more effectively.

(adapted from www.carbmanager.com)

... and one other benefit of keeping your water intake up is that it helps to prevent constipation!

How much water should we be drinking?

There's a list on the spreadsheet in the rules - rule 6 - but also there's another formula widely quoted online. Have a read of this . It's an American site, so uses ounces of water, but it will give you a good idea.

So in short, it is possible to drink too much water, but we need to drink more on a low carb diet - spread out through the day - and keep our electrolyte levels up to prevent carb or keto flu

Urgh @UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea that would genuinely feel like a personal attack if it were me. Hope you have some nice low carb treats to distract!

@ToddlingForwards what a cracking cabbage! Has reminded me how much I enjoy big buttery wedges of the stuff, will have to nab one in the supermarket later.

I managed to drink what I think ended up being around 4l of water yesterday - more than my goal - and had an electrolyte and potassium pill before bed. No cramps, and other than many more trips to the loo, none of my feared side effects. Thanks all for the tips!

A friend lost lots of excess weight low carbing years ago, and is being a real support for me in this. She keeps sending me silly memes, but this was genuinely how I felt when I woke up this morning Grin

I’ve spent a day catching up on the thread, so jumping in now. Hello to so many recognised bootcampers, but especially Ragz who provided me with much inspiration back in 2017.

Five years ago I lost (eventually) well over 6 stone by bootcamping. 4 plus stone in the first 9 months and an additional stone in each of the following two years by simply never coming off it. I really believe LC saved my life. I started running every day as well and despite being post menopausal and having no thyroid was in better nick that I’d been since I was 20.

Things went a bit arse over tit in the first lockdown but that was a practical issue related to living with someone shielding and for weeks living off deliveries from local farm shops (yum but not always LC!) My first deviation in over three years but not disastrously so - a few pounds on that came off again without real issue.

But in October 2020 the symptoms that my dad had been scared to ‘bother the NHS’ with during lockdown one were diagnosed as stage 4 terminal cancer. I moved in with him and cared for him with zero support for 4 months over the winter lockdowns till he died and I also became my mum’s carer. Everything got on top of me and I had a bit of a breakdown. I don’t really remember that much about it as I seemed to spend a lot of the second half of last year lying under the duvet staring at the ceiling or crying. Anyway, while DH could have and would willingly have cooked low carb meals for me, I felt so sick on my medication that all I could eat without throwing up was white carbs. I had a severe dose of the fuckits and lived on toast, pasta, rice pudding and baked potatoes. Over 4 months I managed to put on 2.5 stone. Still I long way under my original weight but far beyond any kind of buffer zone I had set myself.

Anyway, while I’m still feeling emotionally a bit fragile my medication is working, and I feel a lot less sick. I’m going for decent walks every day and I feel able to start tackling my diet again. I’ve certainly learned what I always suspected - carbs just aren’t right for me. I always suspected LC would have to be for life for me and last year proved it. For whatever reason, my body doesn’t cope with them. Went shopping yesterday and stocked up on lots of nice low carb cheeses, chicken, salmon and veggies so the fridge is full. And several bunches of fresh flowers as a treat! All a bit extravagant but have decided to give myself an easy start.

Look forward to getting to know you all!

pinknsparkly · 18/01/2022 10:15

I had a good first day yesterday, and then a terrible start to this morning. I'm not even willing to post what I've eaten this morning but suffice to say it's not something that you could even attempt to justify as being fairly low carb or healthy!! I've been 16:8ing for a couple of weeks now, and this morning I broke both my fast (4 hours early) and low carb. However, I've made myself a cup of coffee with cream, filled up my water bottle and will restart now. Onwards and downwards Halo

BIWI · 18/01/2022 10:28

Oh @ilovecherries Flowers

I knew you'd been having a difficult time, but hadn't realised just how awful it was for you. Very glad to hear that you're on the mend. Hopefully we can all help you along the way too.

OP posts:
AllTheBlackCoffee · 18/01/2022 10:58

Flowers @ilovecherries sounds like you've had a really tough time of it recently. I recognise your name from previous BCs (I am a serial name changer and clearly a very bad LCer) and always found your story so inspirational. You've done it once so I'm sure you can do it again.

Today's plan:
L: bacon, mushroom and halloumi salad with oily dressing
D: spag Bol, with courgetti

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 18/01/2022 11:00

ThanksThanks for you, @ilovecherries

CeleriacOfTheNight · 18/01/2022 11:04

Morning all

Ginger tea first thing, now I'm having an early lunch of eggs scrambled with cream, spinach and cheddar, with smoked salmon and a black coffee

What diet? Grin

Gardeniafleur · 18/01/2022 11:16

Morning! Three eggs with Mayo, some plain yogurt.

Caesar dressing (homemade) and lettuce for lunch.

Going to have lo carb noodles with bacon bits and green beans for dinner. Oh, and red cabbage just because I made it to snack on.

BetterthanIthink · 18/01/2022 11:18

Morning all .
At work all day today so I’ve taken a massive chicken salad to work and had half for breakfast.
Salad was roast chicken, green peppers , lettuce , grated cheese, hunter gather mayo and hunter gather Greek olive oil dressing.

BSky · 18/01/2022 11:23

Flowers @ilovecherries So sorry you’ve had such a tough time. Flowers are a lovely treat - good for you!

@BIWI - Blush yup it was a protein & fat day. (I did eat the green meet on the cauli ). FLGV and plenty of water from today onwards….
Have spinach & watercress soup, celery, cucumber & lettuce wraps with pate planned for lunch. Something with broccoli for tea….

Have cabbage & shoogled sprout envy so will be adding them to menu this week.

I remember you from 2017, I'm Jim (jimminy cricket, slimjim, there were a few jim related user names!)

Sorry to hear you've had such a rough time of it but it's really lovely to read a familiar user name!

WellJuhnelle · 18/01/2022 11:32

Thank you for setting this up again @BIWI! I know this way of eating is the only way I can be healthy but I have taken my eye off the ball in a big way over the last 18 months so this is just what I need.

I am full of a cold today and craving stodgy. I know I don’t really need it at all but the leftover party food from my DCs party on Saturday is calling to me. Off to pick the youngest one up from nursery now - it is a one mile walk each way so setting off early to remove myself from the temptation Grin

ilovecherries · 18/01/2022 11:36

I remember you well, Dolly! Along with Ragz you convinced me it was doable as I remember you’d lost something like 21lbs in your first BC. I didn’t really believe it was possible, then I did exactly the same!

BIWI · 18/01/2022 11:37

@AllTheBlackCoffee and @CeleriacOfTheNight

Why no breakfast? If you're long-term low carbers this is fine - but if not, you really do need to have breakfast in these first two weeks.

OP posts:
CoffeeChocolateWine · 18/01/2022 12:07

Hi all, hope all is going well. I struggle to keep up with the thread but will have a read later.
Had a delicious breakfast this morning of poached egg, smoked salmon, avocado and grilled tomatoes.
Lunch will be salad with halloumi (same as yesterday - it was delicious!)
Dinner is salmon with as much veg as I can fit on my plate!

I had a terrible headache last night and ended up having an early night (probably not a bad thing as evenings are the time I usually get the munchies!) It still hasn’t quite lifted today. I’m quite prone to headaches anyway but I’m thinking it might be caffeine related as I cut down to one coffee in the morning and a decaf in the afternoon; usually I have at least 3 caffeinated coffees a day!

prettybird · 18/01/2022 12:16

@ilovecherries ThanksThanksThanks to you - and good on you for treating yourself. You deserve it ThanksThanksThanks

If you fancy a coffee and chat at any time and are up in Glasgow, let me know Smile No pressure though - don't feel obliged.

I've already asked for no Big Stick Grin

I'm a long term IFer and LCer

CoffeeChocolateWine · 18/01/2022 12:29

Just caught up on reading the thread and see I’m the only one suffering with a headache. I will try adding a bit of salt to see if it helps. Thanks for all the helpful info @BIWI.

BIWI · 18/01/2022 12:37

The headache is probably carb flu, which means you need to up your electrolytes.

... but if you've also cut down on caffeine that could be a bit of a double whammy!

OP posts:
BIWI · 18/01/2022 12:38

@CeleriacOfTheNight sorry! Grin

I should have made a note of all those who are exempt from The Big Stick! Forgive me for not remembering.

OP posts:
StuntNun · 18/01/2022 12:52

I'm just back from a Bootcamp-inspired shop at Waitrose with two packs of Buttermint tea (for those not in the know it tastes like Werthers Original sweets and is brilliant for a "dessert" when you're craving something sweet) and some rose harissa (plus broccoli, sprouts, halloumi and kale) for the recipe someone - can't remember who - shared earlier. What else can I do with harissa paste? I've never used it before.

Baystard · 18/01/2022 12:53

I don't really have a plan today, but I've decided lunch is going to be thinly sliced chorizo roasted until it is crisp and used to scoop a mixture of full fat soft cheese and grated mature cheddar. I was going to have solely soft cheese but i think the cheddar is lower in carbs so I'll mix them.

Not sure about dinner yet, ham omelette possibly.

StuntNun · 18/01/2022 12:55

You can microwave chorizo Baystard 1 minute on high on a piece of kitchen paper. It also works with salami slices. They're lovely topped with a little bit of Brie.
