Although I generally keep a chat thread going at the end of each Bootcamp, I think it would be better to have an ongoing chat thread that isn't linked to a specific Bootcamp.

So here it is. A sparkly new thread, for all things low carb and Bootcamp chat. As well as anything else you'd like to chat about!

Feel free to chat about anything you like here.

I am in. My phone keeps pinging me with photo memories from years gone by, and it's really hammered home how much weight I've put on since this time last year especially. I have had a stressful year, to be sure, but defaulting to eating shite is not helping my health. Ready to slough off some weight and get fitter.

SweetPotatoDumpling · 30/12/2021 11:37

I am making my shopping list today, in readiness! My 'Christmas Fridge' is getting a clear out this afternoon...anything remotely carby is going in the bin!

I put jeans on this morning that were slightly loose the last time I wore them...I struggled to even get them over my hips 😢😱 I'm now in joggers 🤦‍♀️ So, so disappointed in myself!

Any 'must-haves' to go on my shopping list??

Moonswimmer · 30/12/2021 11:42

I’m so pleased to get back going with this. The Christmas photos are awful - I’ve never seen my double chin this bad - so I am full of resolve. Currently plotting out all the carby stuff to use up, and what to replace it with at the next shop.

venusandmars · 30/12/2021 12:21

Thanks @BIWI

I ordered the Fast 800 Keto book (Michael Mosley) which apparently combines low carb and intermittent fasting. It arrived today.

I'll not be counting calories but I'm using it for re-setting my inspiration for the kind of food I love - eggs, spinach, oily fish, cheese avocado, good meat, broccoli, cabbage etc... Plus I know that intemittent fasting works for me and my lifestyle.

@Moonswimmer my planning for anything carby is to make something for dh (tonight a big baked potato for him to have with sausage and red cabbage casserole). If he isn't eating something half a Christmas pudding, I'm looking at you then I give him a time limit and then throw it out. I hate food waste, but it's better that food waist Grin Grin so I'm certainly NOT going to eat any left-over carbs.

Fruit juice bought by dcs, sweet sugary chocolate, cranberry jelly... all going in the food recylcling if they're not eaten by tomorrow. Note to self: do not put cranberry jelly in the sausage and red cabbage casserole - you do not need it.

BIWI · 30/12/2021 12:26

Yes, my book arrived today as well @venusandmars. Going to get stuck into that asap.

I also found out today that I am pre-diabetic 😱 Had bloods done just before Christmas but I've only just rung to find the results 😢 So I have even more reason to low-carb...health trumps weight loss any day (but of course I need to lose the weight too 😄) I am hoping to get myself out of the pre-diabetic state by controlling my food intake. 🤞

BIWI · 30/12/2021 12:31

@SweetPotatoDumpling I'm sorry to hear that Sad

While I have no doubt that Bootcamp/low carbing will help you, you might also find a calorie-restricted diet, e.g. the Fast800, very helpful in the short term.

Try getting hold of the book @venusandmars linked to - it's Dr Michael Mosley's latest book which combines low carbing with intermittent fasting and low calorie eating - the latter only for a short period of time, I believe (sorry - have only read the first few pages so far!)

But his Fast800 programme was devised initially specifically to deal with Type 2 diabetes, by delivering fast weight loss.

Thanks @BIWI I've just ordered it 👍

Moonswimmer · 30/12/2021 12:40

I’m not going mad, @venusandmars, it’s just a gentle tapering off of carbs and a gentle reintroduction of exercise until next Monday, which is the end of all the festivities for me, and the point at which I will hopefully kick into gear. I know what you mean though. There’s a time when I would have been parked outside tesco desperately shovelling in haribo to fill the time before I had to stop!

DebkaPower · 30/12/2021 13:09

Thank you for the new thread.
I lost about 6st low carbing up until Christmas last year, I was running regularly and felt great.
This year a lot has changed, including my partner moving in and I've gained about a stone back, and the running has fizzled out too. I bought some beautiful new clothes in my new size and they're all feeling depressingly tight.
I'm feeling positive about restarting keto and building the running back up to get to feeling good about myself again. I've looked at some recipes and will get organised to restart soon.

StuntNun · 30/12/2021 13:18

@SweetPotatoDumpling intermittent fasting 16:8 is brilliant for reversing pre-diabetes. My mum reversed hers without even going low carb, she just reduced her carb portion size and started skipping breakfast.

venusandmars · 30/12/2021 13:30

I'm reading the MM book and I think he's been following us and taking our advice onboard Grin

The stuff about ultra-processed foods... I once went on a bread making course (pre-bootcamp obvs) and tehy said bread should contain 5 or 6 ingredients. Maybe a couple more if you are adding herbs or seeds. Most processed breads have about 25 ingredients - one of which is an 'inert' ingredient that is there to clean the machinery and prevent the dough from sticking Shock

H1Drangea · 30/12/2021 13:43

My book arrived today too !
I know I can read it … it’s the eating that’s the problem

BestIsWest · 30/12/2021 13:52

Thank you BIWI.
I’m still a bit off piste at the moment but I will be back on Jan 1. Haven’t been too bad but probably eaten more carbs than I should.
Going to order the Moseley book when I get home.

Beebopawhop · 30/12/2021 13:57

I am also looking at old photos coming up 3 years ago of me looking good, skin everything (I wasn't drinking alcohol then either so may play a part) what are your thoughts on alcohol anyone know the lowest carb content alcoholic drink? I want to lose my belly once and for all and I'm 40 in a few days!!!! Thanks for the thread x

BIWI · 30/12/2021 14:28

@Beebopawhop clear spirits are zero carb - so gin, vodka, rum and whisky. But beware the mixers that you're using with them! From a Bootcamp point of view, all alcohol is out for the first two weeks.

From then onwards, although you can have alcohol occasionally, using mixers with artificial sweeteners is not advised - and full sugar mixers are definitely out. So the best mixer would be soda or sparkling water.

Dry wine is the next best in terms of being low carb - but it does contain carbs, so again best to drink in moderation.

@BIWI thanks!

FitnessKeepItGoing · 30/12/2021 14:41

So after a strict two weeks, what happens? And longer term is this diet sustainable?

prettybird · 30/12/2021 14:50

@venusandmars - the sourdough bread I make for others, not for me has 5 ingredients: bread flour, dark rye flour, salt, olive oil and caraway seeds Grin

And the sourdough croissants of which I did have twoBlush have only 4 ingredients: flour, sugar, salt and lots of butter

BIWI · 30/12/2021 14:57

@FitnessKeepItGoing

So after a strict two weeks, what happens? And longer term is this diet sustainable?
After the first two, strict weeks, things get relaxed a little - so you can include some fruit (mainly berries), some nuts and seeds and some alcohol - all in moderation.

After the full Bootcamp - usually either 8 or 10 weeks - it's entirely up to you what you do. If you've reached your target weight by then, you can start reintroducing carbs, e.g. some legumes/pulses, or some carbier veg. The aim of this is to work out the amount of carbohydrate you can tolerate each day without regaining weight.

It's perfectly sustainable for the rest of your life. The basic rules of Bootcamp are to keep your carbs low, but to get your carbs from veg and salad (and some fruit), to eat good fats, a reasonable amount of protein and eat as little processed food as possible. Can't see what anyone would say is not sustainable about that!

CeleriacOfTheNight · 30/12/2021 14:59

I'm in for this one. I've even replaced the potato in my username with celeriac Grin

LowlyTheWorm · 30/12/2021 15:06

I had a fantastic weight loss with the boot camp a few months ago. Sadly fell off the wagon as my head gets all weird about weight loss and I had probably regained around 7/10 pounds I’d guess.
But I know I felt so much better health wise when low carbing and in control etc. I will restart in the new year. Ordered the 800 Keto book too.

FitnessKeepItGoing · 30/12/2021 15:31

Thank you @BIWI! You are amazing
