Week 3 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp

BIWI · 31/10/2021 22:54

Well, doesn't time fly?!

We've already completed the two, hardest weeks of Bootcamp.

So now, things get a bit different.

During the next 3 weeks, you'll be doing strict Bootcamp during the week, but at weekends, you can relax into Bootcamp Light. This means that you can introduce some fruit - in the form of berries - and some nuts/seeds, albeit occasionally and in moderation, and some alcohol - again, in moderation - and restricted to clear spirits with zero calorie mixers, and/or dry wines

As ever, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I sense that you're all coping really well, although it's also evident that there a lot of practical and (particularly) emotional challenges that are rearing their heads.

Stand tall and stay tough!

This WOE is not a very forgiving one, so it's important that you stick to the rules as much as you possibly, possibly can. I know that real life gets in the way sometimes, but the more you can resist all those obstacles and challenges, the better.

Here's to another successful week!

HOWEVER

I do need to warn you, if you're new to low carbing/Bootcamp, that weeks 3 & 4 are very, very challenging. Your body is in the process of transitioning from burning carbs to burning fat; you have lost a lot of water weight, emptied your glycogen stores and have started burning fat. The next two weeks you need to see as consolidation weeks - you may not see much movement on the scales while this is happening.

DON'T PANIC!

You know that it works, because you've lost the weight in the first fortnight - so just KOKO (keep on keeping on), and all will be fine.

This is, though, the reason why - on this Bootcamp - we're aiming to stay strictly Bootcamp during the week. To give us the best chance of losing as we can.

Very good luck to all of us Flowers

This week's recipe is a fish one - seeing as how we've had a meat one and a veggie one!

Baked Marinated Salmon

One salmon steak per person

Marinade:

1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
2 large cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
2 tbsps sesame oil
2 tbsps light soy sauce
juice of a lemon or lime
black pepper
sprinkling of dried oregano
sprinkling of dried chilli flakes (optional)

Mix together.

Put salmon pieces into a (non-metal) dish, pour marinade ingredients over them
Leave to marinade for at least 30 minutes
Wrap pieces in foil and bake in a hot oven for 15 minutes

This is lovely served with stir-fried veg - so typically I'd do finely shredded cabbage, baby sweetcorn, mangetout, pak choi. I sometimes also serve it with Bare Naked Noodles

Glenthebattleostrich oh good, I roasted the mushrooms whole for about 20 mins, they were v big. You could cut them up of course if you are in a hurry.

ShagMeRiggins yes! I have only watched episode 1 which has that scene, we have agreed to keep the series for family viewing over Christmas as everyone wants to watch it. I loved Coach Beard. This rarely happens, The Mandalorian was another hit. I never thought a few bubbles would be difficult but they really are.

Off to drink some still water.

ditavonteesed · 03/11/2021 17:46

@ListenLinda hope everything went ok with ds.

Sorry I have been quiet for a few days, wanted to make sure I read all those fascinating posts about NHS diet advice before carrying on with the thread and just couldn't find the time until just now.

I'm feeling inspired by all your stories of resisting temptation. The bowl of crap for trick or treaters is still here looking at me all funny because hardly any of them braved the rain on Sunday. I have been dipping into it, simply because it's there. Off to have a shower now and then my first job today is shoving it all into a Tupperware with A lid and putting it somewhere I can't see it. Also realised that my sugar cravings last week were PMT - 25 years of periods and it still surprises me every single month Confused

Better still, bin it! Halloween has been and gone and if you happened to be in a position where you desperately needed sweets in the future, there are many many shops that sell them 😆
ouchmyfeet · 04/11/2021 08:48

Yes I should do, if I was the only one who lived here I would. The kids would never forgive me though

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 04/11/2021 08:57

Morning! I've been quiet too: sorry. Started a new PT job this week, & getting used to my new routine.

Sorry you had a rainy Halloween @ouchmyfeet Haloween Sad. It was fine here, and all the sweets went. I don't really like sweets myself, but am a sucker for themed chocolate.

LowlyTheWorm · 04/11/2021 09:10

I’ve also been quite. Full time working is new to me and only temporary as I’m a Student Nurse in my final year- but it’s tough on daily life balance and I feel quite emotionally drained by my work and my feelings of inadequacy surrounding being as available for my family.
The good in this is the WOE is the one thing that is for ME and even losing a few pounds gave me confidence to get up dancing at a Halloween party with my kids instead of hiding away. So this new confidence and my will to become healthier is inspiring me to find some time to exercise. Working provides 20k worth of steps per shift. But as of next week I will be back t uni and online mostly. So I was thinking of trying the couch to 5K.

I’m also in two minds about continuing to weigh myself. I have a poor relationship with scales and if I have had a “good week” but the scale don’t reflect this- I often head for the comfort of food. After my placement ends I don’t have access to scales at home but I’m thinking if I maybe weigh at Boots etc in a months time? Or maybe kick the scales to the kerb completely and not let a number define my journey?
🤔 food for thought.
Must drink more water though. Ward is hot but toilet breaks are difficult to fit in sometime so I know I don’t drink nearly enough on duty.

BIWI · 04/11/2021 09:47

I'd just ditch the scales if they cause you issues @LowlyTheWorm - but do take some measurements and/or find an item of clothing that's currently a little bit too tight.

I've just (re)joined the gym. Two PT sessions a week has become too expensive, as well as actually not enough exercise, I've found. Since I retired, it's too worryingly easy to just sit around the house and not do anything. I've tried running - I've done the C25K three times now, as well as the September 'run 60 miles' challenge - and have just proved to myself that I really, really don't like running!

So my plan is to find different classes that I can go to and try and mix these up with some gym sessions and swimming. For me, it's about flexibility and general fitness as I get older - as I realise that unless I'm burning a massive number of calories every day, it won't be about weight loss. I also got a pretty good deal, by choosing the off-peak membership, and also paying a year's fee up front (which gave me a 10% discount). And because I'm also a returning member, I'll be able to use the spa area, which normally my membership wouldn't allow.

Kick-off session is on Monday, so we'll see where that leads me.

Ontherebound34 · 04/11/2021 09:59

Fair point @ouchmyfeet. Although I’d still be temped even when the sweets are tucked away in the cupboard so I’d tell the kids to either eat them up straightaway or go and buy their own if they want any. But if you can resist temptation, fair play.

averywittyusername · 04/11/2021 10:08

Thank you so much for the information @ditavonteesed and @StuntNun .. I'm staggered that there seems to be a way forward for low carb in conjunction with thyroid issues.

I'm fairly sure that LCHF does, in addition to helping energy levels and making life generally fart-free, make one look younger.. what's not to like Grin

Rayna37 · 04/11/2021 13:06

Huge "drama" last night when I put 4 eggs on to boil for the next 2 breakfasts, went to the cupboard for the next box...empty! Turns out DH has been on 2 omelettes a day and DS has had some too! ok I just didn't buy enough

I have a small victory, this morning's weigh-in unlikely to hold until Monday puts me exactly half way between my bootcamp starting weight and my goal. If only the second half would go so easily! Almost 6lbs off so far.

Keep on with the water everyone! DH is off out for a curry tonight so I'm experimenting with a new Brussels sprouts recipe Grin

missfliss · 04/11/2021 13:22

I did that September Run 60 miles challenge too @BIWI - I was raising money for cancer research in memory of a colleague who died quite suddenly after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
I'm a reasonably regular runner and it was actually a bit too much for me!

Hope the gym helps

BIWI · 04/11/2021 13:54

I have to confess that I didn't run all those 60 miles, @missfliss! Once I realised that you were also allowed to walk them, I did a mix of both. It was a great relief to get the thing finished!

WATER anyone...?!

Tonight I’m once again insisting the Hormoaners etc eat leftovers. I spent too much time last weekend making delicious food for it to go to waste.

Very busy with lots of little birds (distractions) chirping away in my ears, but I am on-piste and pleased.

It is so good to see and feel differences, however minor they might be.

Also had a microneedling treatment today. My face is a funny red hot mess, but apparently the results will reveal themselves with much collagen production over the next few weeks.

KeyLimePies · 04/11/2021 15:40

If anyone is looking for some recipe inspiration, one of my favourite foodie websites is Once Upon a Chef (best recipe for banana pancakes ever)

She does have some pretty good low carb recipes, with some examples here. You can save favourite recipes to a recipe box to make them easier to find.

If you sign up you don't get bombarded with loads of emails, just a weekly one, although coming up to holiday season some of them might be a bit too tempting.

Moanranger · 04/11/2021 17:16

Day three & I am down 1.5kg from start weight. I am still v hungry, so I suspect ketosis has not kicked in. I am staying strict BC & particularly limiting dairy. Yesterday I had 18g cheese, that was it for dairy. I do intend to try the Cheeseburger pie. It may stall me, we shall see...

BIWI · 04/11/2021 17:36

Keep the fat levels high @Moanranger and also - channelling my inner @ShagMeRiggins - make sure you're drinking all the water!

You don't need to be in ketosis, by the way, to lose weight. Just limiting your carb intake will be enough (as long as it's low enough, of course!)

But good going so far! Flowers

We were supposed to be having dinner at friends tonight (our first meal out at friends my dad excepted since last March Shock) but I tested positive this morning on a LFT (and dh's subsequent LFT was also positive) so am now awaiting the result of our PCR tests. Don't hold out much hope of them being negative as both LFTs were positive. Sad

I developed a "cold" yesterday - but it's no worse (in fact probably better) than the mega-cold I got a few weeks ago, during which I always returned negative LFTs Confused

BIWI · 04/11/2021 17:52

Oh no! Hope you're OK @prettybird. Flowers

But I do agree: water is very important! Wink

BelladiMamma · 04/11/2021 18:22

Hi 👋🏻 everyone

Still going good here. Seem to have cured myself of my digestive biscuit addiction and the mid after noon munchies.

Not a huge amount of exercise happening due to gushing period of hellfire but I am walking the dogs every day.

Will weigh again after period finished.

BIWI · 04/11/2021 18:23

@BelladiMamma don't worry too much about the exercise - it's not essential for weight loss anyway.
