Week 3 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp

Well, doesn't time fly?!

We've already completed the two, hardest weeks of Bootcamp.

So now, things get a bit different.

During the next 3 weeks, you'll be doing strict Bootcamp during the week, but at weekends, you can relax into Bootcamp Light. This means that you can introduce some fruit - in the form of berries - and some nuts/seeds, albeit occasionally and in moderation, and some alcohol - again, in moderation - and restricted to clear spirits with zero calorie mixers, and/or dry wines

As ever, here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I sense that you're all coping really well, although it's also evident that there a lot of practical and (particularly) emotional challenges that are rearing their heads.

Stand tall and stay tough!

This WOE is not a very forgiving one, so it's important that you stick to the rules as much as you possibly, possibly can. I know that real life gets in the way sometimes, but the more you can resist all those obstacles and challenges, the better.

Here's to another successful week!

HOWEVER

I do need to warn you, if you're new to low carbing/Bootcamp, that weeks 3 & 4 are very, very challenging. Your body is in the process of transitioning from burning carbs to burning fat; you have lost a lot of water weight, emptied your glycogen stores and have started burning fat. The next two weeks you need to see as consolidation weeks - you may not see much movement on the scales while this is happening.

DON'T PANIC!

You know that it works, because you've lost the weight in the first fortnight - so just KOKO (keep on keeping on), and all will be fine.

This is, though, the reason why - on this Bootcamp - we're aiming to stay strictly Bootcamp during the week. To give us the best chance of losing as we can.

Very good luck to all of us Flowers

This week's recipe is a fish one - seeing as how we've had a meat one and a veggie one!

Baked Marinated Salmon

One salmon steak per person

Marinade:

1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
2 large cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
2 tbsps sesame oil
2 tbsps light soy sauce
juice of a lemon or lime
black pepper
sprinkling of dried oregano
sprinkling of dried chilli flakes (optional)

Mix together.

Put salmon pieces into a (non-metal) dish, pour marinade ingredients over them
Leave to marinade for at least 30 minutes
Wrap pieces in foil and bake in a hot oven for 15 minutes

This is lovely served with stir-fried veg - so typically I'd do finely shredded cabbage, baby sweetcorn, mangetout, pak choi. I sometimes also serve it with Bare Naked Noodles

I'd like to ask a question. I'm sure I've read an answer to it on previous bootcamps but I can't remember it.

If you have less body fat, do you lose weight more slowly? I'm wondering as I lost two kilos the first week and half a kilo in the two subsequent weeks. I haven't eaten in a significantly different way.

I'm happy to be losing weight at the rate I have been. I'm just curious. I'm currently 3.5 kilos off 'normal' body weight by the BMI measurement.

Morning everyone. Been a bit quiet as I’ve been working on uni assignment.

@Rayna37 your evening treat sounds wonderful...definitely more fulfilling than a bag of haribo

Wanted to share one of the recipes I made from the new keto book- it was a spicy lamb and celeriac roasti tray bake.
It was delicious but I over did the cayenne and nearly blew my dh head off. Had to provide yoghurt with mint sauce to alleviate the spiceGrin it was fab and will share later.

I think I’ve got through the 3 bouncing lbs as been at the lighter end of them for about 2 weeks now. So even in maintenance after 5 mo that if this, it’s still coming off.

I measured again and I’ve lost another 1/2 inch of each thigh now...that’s about 2 1/2 off each!!’

Well done everyone for staying on plan

!
@PastramiNoRye don't be too hard on yourself if you need to be able to grab something quick. If you like cured meats then why not buy a pack of salami or chorizo slices? Still processed but probably better quality that a Peperami. I like individual mature cheddar portions for an "emergency" snack. And if you have a fridge handy, try keeping a couple of boiled eggs (and mayo) in there. When I was new to low carbing I used to make up a batch of chicken drumsticks to keep in the fridge for when I didn't have time to prepare something. Unfortunately my kids got wise to that and tended to eat them before me!
Thank you @StuntNun. That's really helpful!

StuntNun · 06/11/2021 10:26

No @MerylSqueak that's a reasonable rate of weight loss for anyone on Bootcamp that isn't very close to their ideal weight.

MerylSqueak · 06/11/2021 10:30

Thanks @StuntNun

mrshoho · 06/11/2021 10:35

Well done everyone. Thanks for the positive posts. I love hearing about people's tasty meals and it's motivating me to try something new. I hope those currently covid positive and stuck inside are not suffering too badly.

I'm enjoying my creamy coffees in the morning and they seem to be keeping me satisfied through to lunch. I took some dreaded body photos this week (for prosperity!) and they certainly show how badly I need to change my eating habits. This year has been so tough dealing with my elderly parents and anxious asd teen that I was eating more fast food than ever. I'm in a better place now and appreciating the extra me time, even just browsing in the supermarket yesterday felt good. I'm hoping to repeat the photos in a few weeks and see the actual change. I thought I thought I'd fixed my scales but I'm getting a different reading by 3lbs up or down constantly so not going to rely on them too much. Have a great weekend all.

TrueGrit54 · 06/11/2021 11:03

Hi everyone, no Brussels sprouts in my supermarket this week or celeriac, disappointing. Things going well here I think.

I am eating a lot of roast cauliflower and courgettes (olive oil and black pepper) together find it really filling and delicious.

Lunch today is chicken thighs in a little honey/mustard/lemon/garlic marinade and spinach. Dinner is steak and portobello mushrooms.

Just realised while typing this I haven’t had any water! On it now.

BIWI · 06/11/2021 11:36

Do you really need the honey @TrueGrit54?

TrueGrit54 · 06/11/2021 12:34

BIWI got me just in time (do you have a camera in my kitchen?) - the honey is gone, mustard/lemon juice/garlic it is. Thanks. I have drank 1litre now. Back in the good books hopefully.

So I am down to 82.7, that’s another pound gone, beginning of day 5. I leapt into decorating & didn’t eat til 1 pm, then leftover cheeseburger pie. I have prepped some coleslaw using an old carrot, Savoy cabbage, lemon juice &. mayo. Tasty!f
I. am going to try the corn beef hash recipe tonight - looking forward to it!

ShagMeRiggins · 06/11/2021 16:38

Rayna the Cosy Club is a new one on me. Are they nice? (We don’t have one in my area so not sure why I’m asking.)

Also—everyone—could we do a roll call of WATER intake so far today?

It’s a weekend, so work shouldn’t be as much of a reason why not!

Tonight is fajitas with far less meat than usual and loads of peppers, onions, sour cream, salsa, lettuce, and cheese.

It’s an in and out evening for the family based on various activities/engagements, so I’m hoping to have it done and dusted by half six so they can wrap and eat when they like.

Not doing another sit down dinner. Did that last night and all I heard—after slaving away—was that the cake was too dry.

Fuck. Off. Y’all make dinner next time.

ShagMeRiggins · 06/11/2021 16:44

When I was new to low carbing I used to make up a batch of chicken drumsticks to keep in the fridge for when I didn't have time to prepare something. Unfortunately my kids got wise to that and tended to eat them before me!

I can’t remember what age you children are, but this is the thing about my Hormoaner Carb-Eaters: they will grab whatever is easiest for them, the bastards!

Never mind that it’s my only snack/food available...if it’s easy, they’ll have it.

Which is why crisps and sweets are often awful. They’re right there and there is no effort required. Instructions: Open, Eat.

Ultimately it shows me that LCHF food suits most ages and tastes (dietary requirements aside), because it’s rather delicious.

ShagMeRiggins · 06/11/2021 16:52

Ps—I did two squats today, and 20 seconds of planking. Hmm

prettybird · 06/11/2021 16:57

Were the 2 squats squatting to get something from the back of a cupboard and the 30s plank trying to reach something under the bed? Wink

Nope! Proper attempts during a normal day, unfortunately.

Today I have learned that I’m doing well enough with cardio ( treadmill & exercise bike, and yes, I do recognise my privilege that I have these in my home), but that my muscles and core really need action.

I’m shocked, to be honest. Felt the cycling/fast walking were doing the job.

Interesting to learn where my body is, also interesting to decide where I want it to be!

ShagMeRiggins · 06/11/2021 18:25

Actually, prettybird you’ve reminded me that I perform squats daily. That’s nice. They’re not focused, but I need to remind myself that every movement counts, for all of us.

So thank you!

prettybird · 06/11/2021 18:32

In more serious support Wink - i should admit that when I first started doing the Shred, I had to stop for the allowed 5 seconds regularly and do the "on the knees" versions of the press-ups Blush There was one exercise in Level 3, the walking press-up/plank (from forearm plank to straight arm plank) which, when I first started, I literally couldn't get off the forearm on to the straight arm. It was like "message to arm", "arm says no", "message to arm", "arm *still says no"Blush I could do it with difficulty if I did it from my knees (back in a straight line to my knees). I can now do them in full plank position Grin

Moanranger · 06/11/2021 19:47

Reporting back on corned beef hash - I had my doubts when boiling up the celeriac because it has that really strong celery odour, also corned beef in tin is rather dubious stuff. Cooked it up, it was great. For me,catsup is essential. Fun fact: while Tesco’s low sugar fails the taste test, it has way less sugar & carbs relative Heinz 5.3g/100 vs 10g/100. I can live with the taste.
I know it is a condiment to be avoided, but I kept intake to a minimum.
Decorating has come to an abrupt halt - only 1-2.5l tin was available, & it covered exactly 1-1/2 rooms Sad. So we wait til more paint arrives. Was my exercise for the day

PastramiNoRye · 06/11/2021 20:51

We had the Moroccan Chicken traybake with halloumi from the recipe thread. Delicious! I'd highly recommend.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 06/11/2021 21:08

Can I join even though I'm late and only have 7 weeks before Christmas? Also, I can't have eggs so that rules out a lot of breakfasts for me doesnt it?

I'd absolutely love to shift a stone before Christmas and get my skin/sugar cravings in order

BIWI · 06/11/2021 21:14

Of course you can join us @MilkywayMonarch22!

Don't worry about not being able to eat eggs. And also, more importantly, don't feel that you have to eat special or specific foods at breakfast. You can eat anything you like.

No movement on scales for me...

I feel slimmer though.

Also I noticed that when I run I have more sustained energy - genuinely can go longer without any walking than before. Not faster just further and longer ...

A sign I'm burning fat as fuel and it's more sustained rather than peaks and troughs
