2021 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp

BIWI · 17/10/2021 21:46

Welcome to the last Bootcamp of 2021!

This Bootcamp will last for 8 weeks, which will take us up to Monday 13 December.

It's slightly different from other Bootcamps - firstly because it only lasts for 8 weeks (rather than 10), but also because there are going to be different stages.

So ...

Weeks 1 and 2 will be, as ever, strict Bootcamp.

Weeks 3-6 will be strict Bootcamp during the week, but relaxing into Bootcamp Light at weekends

In weeks 7-8 you will have a choice - either back to strict Bootcamp or full-on Bootcamp Light for the last fortnight

Just caught up on the thread propped up in bed with a black coffee courtesy of DH.

Had a good day yesterday at MIL’s. We took food for lunch and dinner with us. Lunch was soup and cheese + DH’s sourdough for him and MIL. Dinner was a celeriac topped fish pie and FLGV. She coped much better and seemed less confused than when we bring her to our house. We took her out to a National Trust place which we all enjoyed but involved a little too much walking for me following a minor medical procedure on Tuesday that seems to have wiped me out emotionally and physically. I am still in bed this morning and DH has brought 2 black coffees and 2 glasses of water with being asked.

Today lunch will be left over fish pie from yesterday and fried mackerel with butter and lemon, celeriac paprika wedges and braised fennel.

Looking forward to joking you all running when I am allowed. No exercise is not good for my MH.

venusandmars · 24/10/2021 10:57

I'm ignoring all the running chat! I'm not cut out to be a runner. Even when I was young and fit (and could run a 10K) my physiology gives me a beetroot face within the first 2 minutes and my psychology hates it the whole time. Since beetroot is not allowed on bootcamp I will stick firmly with my gentle strolls in the autumn weather Grin I've never felt that endorphin stuff from exercise either, but I'm with @ShagMeRiggins on the tasting menu - the anticipation, the aromas, the buttery sauces, the multiple miniscule dishes - all bliss for me! One of the most memorable dishes I've had was cabbage. Just cabbage. Well, hispi cabbage confit in butter with a sprinkling of fermented cabbage leave dust. But essentially, cabbage.

Thinking of butter, when I make corn beef hash I fry lots of shallots in a ton of butter, and I serve the whole with ratatouille and green beans.

I cook cauli rice in the oven with olive oil and crushed fennel seeds, caraway seeds, cumin, salt and pepper. And thinking of caraway, @Dellabob123 can you post the recipe for your crackers?

Had steak served with cream, mushroom and mustard sauce for dinner yesterday, with a great salad.

Today is roast chicken, so that mean lots of stock making later and lots of soup for the freezer.

Thank you & hi 👋🏻 back
BestIsWest · 24/10/2021 11:40

Had a lovely chicken sag takeaway last night. Did it with cauli rice with butter, cardamom, peppercorns cloves and turmeric roasted in the oven. Leftovers for lunch.

Can’t quite believe I gave signed up to the c25k.

HillsBesideTheSea · 24/10/2021 11:41

Another with knees that are shot. in 40s and already had 2 knee surgeries. So couch to 5k is out in the form of running. running is not allowed except in extreme life or death matters (yeah that was a clear clarifyer from the surgeon Hmm) However, i am allowed to use the cross trainer as low impace. Reckon you can use the cross trainer to achieve a couch to 5k instead of running?

If not I am with venusandmars and sticking for my walks.

nowlook · 24/10/2021 11:49

Show us yer bank statements @BIWI Grin

MercedesBenz · 24/10/2021 11:53

So far lost 3lb , although the scale hovers a 1lb lower , but then nope and flips up a 1lb , fingers crossed that extra 1lb loss will show properly tomorrow !!
Doing ok food wise and following for hints and receipes, there seems to be a shortage of celeriac, I can’t find any either

Snacked last night on home made chicken goijons, sprinkle with Parmesan and bake .

Upped the water , cut down on the tea , even had water during the bond movie ! Normally would be coke and popcorn so feel very virtuous about that 😇 but I’m honestly not hungry most of the time

Fri eve had a migraine from hell , with aura
I have had them in the past but I haven’t had one recently , can’t see how or if it could be diet related . I’ve never seen it mentioned anywhere . I had eaten that day all low carb, possibly a coincidence
All fine now

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 24/10/2021 12:11

@HillsBesideTheSea

Cross trainer sounds like a great plan - it's as close as you can get to running without the impact - go for it!

TrueGrit54 · 24/10/2021 12:38

HillsBesideTheSea my DH has an artificial knee (rugby) and uses a cross trainer 5 days a week and has done for years. His surgeon says it’s great, keeps his weight down, keeps his body strong and no strain on his knees. Just decide what levels are walk and run (for me that would be 4 and 8). Nothing wrong with walking though, I crave the fresh air, it always lifts my spirits.

Traditional roast chicken day here, I will dodge the potatoes and carrots and fill up on roast cauliflower, broccoli, sprouts and chicken with crispy skin. I am losing a half pound most days. Not bad for a 54 year old and I feel well.

Rayna37 · 24/10/2021 12:58

Here for accountability between parties! Started the day with scrambled eggs. So far one coffee and a bottle of sparkling water, and two stolen cocktail sausages! Supermarket pitstop- bought corned beef for a very enjoyable car picnic with DS and about to head to our second 4th birthday party of the day!

The cross trainer is my gym cardio of choice too!

BestIsWest · 24/10/2021 13:16

I hate hate hate the cross trainer! I’d rather go on anything else in the gym. I love the rowing machine best. Not that I have been to the gym since my membership lapsed during lockdown.

@BelladiMamma

You are very welcome!

Low carbing is more difficult if you're a vegetarian, but even harder if you're a vegan - but it is possible. The rules for veggies are slightly different in that you're allowed nuts and seeds - check the rules out which are on the spreadsheet.

Also, go to the Low Carb Bootcamp topic, and you'll find all the recipe threads stickied at the top - there's one specifically for vegetarians which might have some recipes that you would like.

Also, Rose Elliott created a low carb vegetarian diet with a recipe book to go with it that you might find useful and/or inspiring.

KateF · 24/10/2021 13:46

I must add the Rose Elliott book to my (overflowing) Amazon basket. I've been through the veggie recipes thread and got a few to try.
I was at first aid training all day yesterday so have lots of cooking to do today. I like to have a pot of soup and something I can portion up for my late finish days so I'm not tempted by takeaway.

Yesterday I missed breakfast as woke up late and had to rush out to training. Grabbed cold meats, cheese and lettuce for lunch from the fridge. Dinner was a casserole with buttered Savoy cabbage and green beans.
Today I've had a mushroom, leek and spinach omelette for breakfast and salmon, mayo and salad for lunch. Got lots of reduced smoked salmon in Aldi so meals may be a bit samey this week!

MerylSqueak · 24/10/2021 13:51

I like that Rose Elliott book

Thank you so much! I am occasionally vegan eg 2 days pw to join in with my DC however I'm aware that protein is either plant based meat substitutes or nuts or a lot of pulses.

I'll have a nosey through and even if I just manage to do this for part of the week hopefully it will help. My mum has reversed her partner's diabetes through diet so I am already a convert

catwithflowers · 24/10/2021 14:11

@BelladiMamma I'm not veggie but enjoy lots of veggie food. Last night I made a really nice paneer saag curry. Served with rice and home made naans for the rest of the family but just on its own for me. Really filling and tasty.

Today is roast chicken dinner, where I avoid the potatoes, Yorkies and honey roast carrots and fill up on chicken including skin, broccoli, celeriac purée which is my new favourite food and low carb cauli cheese 😋

3lbs down since last Tuesday. Yesterday I went for a disastrous ride with my husband (he is a keen cyclist and I am very much a beginner). The route he planned was 16 miles and we've done this distance before but on a very flat coastal route. This one was pretty hilly, not steep hills but more one after another. And then another. I spent much of the ride in first or second gear with him asking "can't you go any faster?"

Then we realised that it had taken me so long that it was getting dark and even though we had lights on the bikes, he didn't feel it was safe for me to be cycling another hour in the dark on country roads when I was already knackered so sped off to pick up the car and pick me up. So I spent 30 minutes, cycling very slowly on my own and feeling very sorry for myself, close to tears and very saddle sore. Got a bit pissed off with him telling me there weren't any hills, just slight inclines and that I was exaggerating. Came home and poured a large gin and tonic to calm myself down 🙈😬

Still strongly in ketosis this morning though and will not repeat on boot camp. Hoping to avoid the stick given the circumstances 😂

catwithflowers · 24/10/2021 14:12

At least the tonic was slimline 🙈😬

Jollyholibobs · 24/10/2021 14:30

@catwithflowers I have had many a similar bike ride with my DH. He says what hill? Or it’s all down hill from here when it clearly isn’t. I realise that my main motivation for these rides was the cake at the coffee stop and since I’ve taken up this WOE I’ve lost the inclination. I’ve done some pretty long distances in the past including several days in the saddle for tours and own a lot of fancy Lycra kit. It’s a shame if I have lost inclination without a cake to spur me on. I need to give my self a shake.

@BelladiMamma I am not veggie as I eat some fish (and make a conscious effort to up it for this WOE). I like the Rose Elliot book mentioned above. I have found that as a (lazy) veggie I had become overly dependent on excessive carbs in my diet and was not feeling well on it. I’m very glad to have discovered this WOE. Good luck.

That could describe me. A lazy veggie!
