Week 2 - Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp

Sunday night here is games night, so better that I start the thread now, before I forget as I've gone to bed so late!

I truly hope that this link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness works!

Apologies if it doesn't, but hopefully someone will come and post a working one if it doesn't!

I love week 2, as for those who haven't low carbed before the results are often spectacularly incredible!

But even for those of us who are more used to low carbing, hopefully this first week has seen you make a good start.

It's looking like some warmer weather is heading our way, which always makes things seem more positive - but also focuses our minds on things like skimpier clothing, so hopefully will help to keep us toeing the line!

I hope the scales have rewarded your hard work, and here's to a good week ahead Flowers

Regarding getting back into running despite injuries, I stopped running for years because of knee pain -- mild arthritis and a meniscus tear. During the first lockdown I risked starting running again, to compensate for the absence of the gym, and I have tried really hard to optimise my running style to cosset my knees as much as possible.

A physio gave me posture advice in relation to a shoulder injury, which I have gradually used to improve my core muscule strength and make myself more upright with chest raised and shouldrers back. It took ages to 'feel' the correct way of doing this (rather than forcing my body into an unnatrual stance). But now that I have, I really do feel this wonderful stabilising strength which I hope benefits my knees as well as my shoulder. Certainly the knee pain is very minimal atm.

When I returned to the gym I was very aware that my back and shoulder muscles natrually want to get in on the act and provide me with a taller, stronger shape while I use all the various machines.

@cheeseisthebest I think there are a few things you could/should do if you want to get back to running. First, go and get your gait analysed at a specialist running shop. That will dictate the kind of shoe you should have and also if you need insoles. (Your podiatrist might be able to help here?)

Second, make sure you take it easy when you start back - the C25K plan is really good for that, but don't try and rush things and if you get the slightest twinge, take extra rest days.

And finally, make sure you're doing the right stretches when you finish. The C25K app I use tells you to 'make sure you stretch now' but annoyingly doesn't tell you what kind of stretches to do! I had shin pain the first time I did it, after only 3 or 4 weeks, and my osteopath said that although I had been stretching, the stretches I was doing weren't doing anything for my shins! (The exercise I had to do is called a Toe Drag Stretch - put one foot in front of the other; with the front foot, turn that foot upside down so the tops of your toes are touching the floor, and then push/drag down. video here )

Checking in. Some great losses! Lovely to read.

Got some salmon I need to use up. One thing and another but the kids and I are bored of oven baked. They won't eat chilli type dishes. Is there a creamy sauce type salmon dish anyone can recommend? 🤔

BIWI · 20/04/2021 11:39

... oh, and make sure that you buy proper/decent running shoes too. Again, hopefully your podiatrist can advise.

cheeseisthebest · 20/04/2021 11:41

Brassicababe I like salmon just with a creamy mustard sauce. Pan fried smon then heat some mustard and stir through cream. I did use to add some white wine an burn thar off to add extra flavour. Kids used to have with pasta and broccoli stirred through and you could have some extra veg.

Thank you for all the running advice! Good point about stretching. Podiatrist was v pricey so will get as much advice/support from them as possible too.

cheeseisthebest · 20/04/2021 11:42

Thanks biwi there's a good local running shop by me so will go there.

ListenLinda · 20/04/2021 11:55

Just checking in with you lovely lot. Not much to add at the minute!
Shish kebabs and salad for lunch and a salmon stir fry for tea. Not feeling hungry at all today which is a good sign!

FinallyHere · 20/04/2021 12:50

I have tulip envy, those are lovely specimens. I guess it's too late to plant them for this year, shall make a note in my diary for next year.

Hope you feel better soon @prettybird

@BIWI I had my eyebrows done by https://www.karenbetts.com. I know they were successful because my mother to one look and asked to be taken to have hers down too.

The process was interesting, anaesthetic applied while in waiting room, then taken into studio for a bit of chat about what you want. Next step they draw in thick wax marker which they think your eyebrows should look like. Given you mirror and tissue to make any adjustments you want then go ahead with the process.

It means that you have seen what it's going to be like before they start and you can give up at that point snd come back later if you prefer.

Just brilliant. Harley street so a bit of pfaff but otherwise brilliant.

Food wise still drinking water, unexpected late night it related working , only just woken up promptly. Today has shifted to a later slot for me.

@MrsBertBibby ohh lovely, I shall need a much bigger garden at this rate.

Random789 · 20/04/2021 13:03

Re microblading, @biwi, the woman who gave me my eyebrow tattoo said she doesn't do microblading as it seems to her 'too destructive' - of the skin I think she meant. I'm not exactly sure in what way. I thought hard about it but in the end I decided that although in principle it felt it should create a more 'natural' look, in practice it is always likely to end up looking artificial -- ok for people who want a 'statement' kind of a look (perhaps people who enjoy wearing quite a lot of stylish make-up), but not for someone like me.
Having said that, if it is just reinforcing existing brows (rather an replacing missing brows!) it might blend well and look natural. Iwould do loads of research and only go to an operative who was vey very experienced and whose style seemed consistent with what I wanted -- apparently lots of them tend to do their own signature thing regardless of the client.

blackbettybramblejam · 20/04/2021 13:23

@debka wow amazing loss well done!
Just checking in:
B:Cream coffee 1.5 L water
L: Green leaves, goats cheese chicken breast in Hellman's pepper and lemon mayo- delicious!
D: Salmon in butter with lemon, broccoli, asparagus, butter baked kale.

BIWI · 20/04/2021 13:28

apparently lots of them tend to do their own signature thing regardless of the client

This is what worries me! As someone who also very rarely wears make-up, it's like the effect you get when you ask for something 'natural'. To a daily make-up wearer their idea of natural is more like my idea of looking like a clown!

Wondering if my lack of loss for 6 days means I'm having too much dairy.

Today
B greek yog
L mozz and tom salad, olive oil dressing
D mackerel fillets, FLGV with butter

Going to ditch the breakfast next week and try for 16:8 to try and minimise week 3 doldrums.

Orcagirl · 20/04/2021 13:59

Got weighed this morning- I’ve lost the grand total of one pound Envy

However... it was my birthday Sunday and a slither of cake and wine was involved, plus I lost 3lb the previous week doing my own version of low carbing.

So not too bad I guess.

MrsKoala · 20/04/2021 14:26

This also puts me off a lot of treatments and hairdressers. There is a young woman at my hairdresser who does the brows and lashes, but she has that contouring make up and her eye brows look sharpied on and her false eyelashes are so extreme I don’t know how she can see properly. So I go somewhere else where the beautician still looks very made up to me, but definitely more normal than most. They must realise it totally puts people off.

I have bought this ‘pasta’ today. Has anyone tried it? I assume it’s allowed?

Is that the stuff someone compared to elastic bands up thread?

BestIsWest · 20/04/2021 14:56

I am starving today.
I had eggs and butter for breakfast and didn’t have time for lunch so grabbed some Boursin and celery. Have drunk 2 litres of water but now stuck in an interminable team’s meeting where three men are arguing about networks and firewalls. Help! Someone rescue me!

Rayna37 · 20/04/2021 15:12

My garden needs an overhaul, hoping to get a designer in this week with a view to it being a 12 month project as so many people are having work done everyone is booked up. Desperate for a new fence so thought we could tie the two projects together.

I bought a bunch of lovely tulips at the weekend and apparently DS3 commented to DH that he doesn't want Mummy to buy any more. No indication why he's taken against them Grin

Merrily browsing new bikes. Food today:

B: 2 egg mushroom cheese omelette
Babybel
L: chicken in mustard mayo on salad (spinach tomato cucumber olives) plus Greek yogurt which I'm about to run out of unless I get to the shop later
D: will be fish pie I made and froze half of a couple of weeks ago, with spring greens I think. My fish pie recipe is one of many on the fish recipe thread, v nice.

FinallyHere · 20/04/2021 15:30

@BestIsWest

arguing about networks and firewalls. Help! Someone rescue me!

Are you me? I'd ask 'em what actions they have decided to take. That always settles them down as they much prefer endless discussion to actually committing to do something useful. 😀

BestIsWest · 20/04/2021 15:54

@FinallyHere Grin true.

BIWI · 20/04/2021 16:01

@MrsKoala it was mentioned on the last thread. Looks OK in terms of carbs, but didn't get a particularly good review - I think it was @Momsincharge who had tried it.

@Orcagirl wine and cake will have that affect ...

@BestIsWest PM me your mobile number and I'll send you an 'urgent' text!

Great losses everyone, just one lb for me but I’m happy with that. Have been low carbing since about the middle of feb so was not expecting a first week whoosh. I’ve managed to run 5k for the first time in months this week so feeling very pleased about that. I’ve got a busy week coming up in work but I’m determined to stay on track.

Momsincharge · 20/04/2021 16:40

@MrsKoala

I tried it. I would eat it again, but I do think they look a bit like elastic bands! They are a bit chewy too. But the flavour is inoffensive and they do soak up sauce.

cheeseisthebest · 20/04/2021 16:41

I bought these jeans today. Decided I needed some decent jeans rather than the awful elasticated waist mum jeans I've been wearing for years.
They are rather tight! A size 12, I am a size 12 but not worn anything without an elasticated waist for at least a year! Blush

They’ll soon be fitting you really nicely. Great way to track your progress, like littleowl’s shorts
