Week 2 - Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp

Sunday night here is games night, so better that I start the thread now, before I forget as I've gone to bed so late!

I truly hope that this link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness works!

Apologies if it doesn't, but hopefully someone will come and post a working one if it doesn't!

I love week 2, as for those who haven't low carbed before the results are often spectacularly incredible!

But even for those of us who are more used to low carbing, hopefully this first week has seen you make a good start.

It's looking like some warmer weather is heading our way, which always makes things seem more positive - but also focuses our minds on things like skimpier clothing, so hopefully will help to keep us toeing the line!

I hope the scales have rewarded your hard work, and here's to a good week ahead Flowers

@StuntNun

My recommendation for when you want something sweet / chocolate / dessert is the Teapigs Chocolate Mint Tea. It has pieces of chocolate in the teabag but is only 3 calories per cup so the carb content of the tea is negligible. Unfortunately I never see it in the shops any more so I have to buy it directly from Teapigs or from Amazon.
Thanks for this recommendation @StuntNun I am still bereft without the Teapigs mulled wine tea. That was perfect bedtime tea for me. I discovered that one in the October Bootcamp when I was lamenting that Twynings Buttermint had been discontinued.
ZiggZagg · 21/04/2021 11:17

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and flowers!

Better day today, had a coffee. Going over to see dad at the hospital, so will have lunch when I get back- eggs with FLGV. Not sure what's for tea yet, maybe fish and more veg!

Have a great day everyone!

venusandmars · 21/04/2021 11:29

My eyebrows have become more pale and less defined - maybe they are even going grey... But thanks to @shagmeriggins and her style class I have been introduced to the wonders of an eyebrow pencil not much make up worn around here, so this was something of a novelty

I was once at a wedding fair where there was an exhibitor demonstrating an eyebrow stencil (so people could get the right shape). However they only seemed to have one shape of stencil. So a group with a bride-to-be, her mum, her grandma, and her posse of potential bridesmaids all walked away from the stand with exactly the same eyebrow shape and colour. It looked extremely odd and I still giggle when I think about it. I hadn't realised before how varied eyebrows were and how different brows are part of what makes you look like an individual. This whole group of women looked like sort of weird clones Grin

@StuntNun My local Asda has restocked with the Schneider Brot. It lasts for months so I bought most of what was available on the shelf.

@nowlook Grin Grin great typo

venusandmars · 21/04/2021 11:38

@nowlook I still blush at my worst faux pas with colleagues... I was one week into a new job and went to my first meeting with all the other regional managers. The Director was doing introductions and asked whether a particular team member would be joining us. I had spoken to the man the previous day, and in my desire to show how well connected I was already, I spoke up to let the boss know that Paul had indicated he would indeed be attending. Unfortunately the phrase I actually used was "I spoke to Paul on the phone yesterday and he made noises as though he was coming." Mortified.

Food today:
B - not hungry so coffee with cream
L - left over mushroom 'risotto' made with cauli rice.
D - the famous chicken alfredo. In all my time on here I've not got around to making it. Tonight's the night.

nowlook · 21/04/2021 11:43

Blush @venusandmars Grin
My hands have gone clammy just thinking about that!

I can't believe you've never had chicken alfredo! You've been here since Adam was a lad!!

Stepharoo78 · 21/04/2021 11:58

Gosh so many messages to catch up on! @ListenLinda i just had teh best night's sleep in ages. I think it's the lack of alcohol which means I get good quality sleep!

@colouringindoors hope you're feeling better soon. PMS is so rubbish.

@Jollyholibobs @Random789 I am exactly the same and I think for similar reasons. When the kids go to bed it's a release from having to be perfect when I've been desperate for food all day. I've never really thought of it like that.

@MilesJuppIsMyBitch just to say that I love your user name!!

Thinnerlikeachickendinner · 21/04/2021 12:09

@venusandmars your french mistakes are cracking me up, your French must be incredible to be able to work in it, I just mortify myself on holiday with my best friend who married a French guy - it is a deep countryside region and everyone is very, very, very French speaking and they laugh their ass off at my inevitable massive gaffes. It's my dream to improve.

@middleagemadness I love David Austin roses, they're so wonderful and make me so happy.

Yesterday: greek, yoghurt, remains of delicious moussaka with extra cheddar to ward off all the interested family members who wanted leftovers (they all hate cheddar). Plus some scrambled eggs, sautéed veg, leftover roast cauliflower, broccoli.

Today: feta in olive oil as a random breakfast/midmorning snack, going to have salmon with veg for dinner and cauliflower rice with a fried egg (or two) on top for lunch.

nowlook · 21/04/2021 12:18

I'm the French fuckwit @Thinnerlikeachickendinner Grin

My French is nowhere near as good as their English, but I do have some quite specific poultry-related vocab now. I certainly don't remember that coming up in Tricolore when we met Jean-Luc and Marie-Chantal in La Rochelle! By the same token, my in-depth knowledge of different number plates in the various French regions remains under-utilised...

Rshard · 21/04/2021 12:20

So busy on here this morning!

😂 at your typo nowlook!

I’m also breaking my chicken Alfredo cherry tonight, same as venus

Does anyone know much about gastro issues/IBS? My dd is suffering from two things I think, an IBS type thing when she’s stressed - most recently this morning ahead of a french assessment and also intermittent vomiting. Doctor is investigating but poor dd is really fed up with feeling rubbish. Sorry to derail, but I know some bootcampers so have IBS and you lot are so clever!

FinallyHere · 21/04/2021 12:29

@colouringindoors lovely tulips 😀

@prettybird. Hope you feel much better soon. Love your colour scheme of stone and tulips.

💐 to everyone KOKO

p.s. daily spinach and / or celeriac works for me, @debka alongside the FTGV.

nowlook · 21/04/2021 12:47

That sounds very much like performance anxiety @Rshard Flowers

Does she get it before a big swimming comp, too? Or does she feel more in control of that?

This woe has definitely helped my IBS generally, but in her situation you could try (not science-based AT ALL):

  • something that gets her saliva going so it doesn't feel like her throat's closing up (Fruit pastilles were my thing because I wasn't allowed gum)
-A swig of cough syrup (honey and lemon glycerin); -Avoid all caffeine (no diet coke etc) -If she can't face eating breakfast before an exam, don't push it. Liquid sustenance like a smoothie is fine- adrenaline will get her through!

The first two are definitely what worked for me before exams (not in a scientific way, but in a ritualistic sort of way!).

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't go back to exam days for all the tea in China.

Tickledtrout · 21/04/2021 14:11

Another one very constipated here. Have managed three litres of cold herbal tea and phylissium husks for a week to no effect. Family history of bowel cancer so will go back to adding some oat bran water porridge and maybe figs next week.
Turned away from blood donation yesterday as I've become anaemic since Xmas donation. Think it must be an inflammatory response ( knee pain for ages now) as post menopausal so no periods to blame. No Seabrook's crisps to dodge though, so every cloud...
Loving the eye brow snaps. Trés chic.
Flowers to those living in especially difficult times
Seriously low carb rolls ordered and tuna steaks for tea. Need to find the olives I know are in the cupboard somewhere. Planning a Nicoise type thing

Thanks so much nowlook. I think you might be right. She has definitely experienced it at galas and has been very anxious about french tests, particularly speaking. She has developed some strategies for dealing with that issue, really successfully. But yes, areas where she is talented and there are high expectations. She has a french assessment today and said she wasn’t nervous or stressed but perhaps she was and the IBS was her body dealing with the stress?

I will show her your message and suggestions. Thanks Flowers

TheHoover · 21/04/2021 14:56

Haha venus and nowlook - maybe you’ll find yourself in the next edition of the french Damn You Autocorrect.

Today I joined club de celeriac. Very nice soup it was (Hugh F-W recipe); great texture, similar to using cannellini beans.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 21/04/2021 15:58

Flowers to @ZiggZagg, glad you get to see your Dad today, hope the visit goes/went well.

@prettybird and @colouringindoors hope things improve for you both and you’re feeling better.

Howling at @venusandmars and @nowlook thank god I don’t need another language for work, I embarrass myself quite enough in English.

That lunchbox looks amazing @nowlook just don’t stick the cock in it 😂

Loving all the pics, jealous of all the tulips as plants tend to take one look at me and die. I’m now thinking it may be my eyebrows putting them off. They do look a bit Norman Lamont like tbh. Blush

Didn’t weigh Monday as had incredibly heavy period from hell, (TMI sorry) and the cramps were making me sick so toast was all I could keep down. Still very heavy now but minimal cramping, which is weird. Hoping it’s just the adjustment to this woe plus
perimeno.

Weighed today instead and have lost 4lbs, so very happy!

Some amazing losses from earlier in the thread, big congratulations to all, sorry just caught up in a rush and forgot to note down names 🤦🏻‍♀️

In the absence of @shagmeriggins:

Water, water, water!💧

StuntNun · 21/04/2021 16:08

For future reference OnceUponAMidnightBeery ibuprofen, indeed all NSAIDS, reduces heavy period flow. I only discovered this after years of suffering so now I tell everyone about it at every opportunity.

B: nothing as I've been doing 16:8 for yonks.
L: stir fried ribeye strips and king prawns in the Cafe de Paris butter someone linked to a few threads ago. I bought a whole ribeye from a wholesaler last week so I sliced up the wonky end pieces from when I somewhat ham handedly cut the joint into steaks. They were very yummy so I'm now looking forward to having the steaks when opportunity arises.
D: will be homemade meatballs (made with Lidl's 23% fat beef and pork mince mix) served with roasted courgette, red onion and red pepper.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 21/04/2021 16:39

@StuntNun I think I love you.

For the tip and for the butter, omg how fabulous does that sound 😋Got some nice steaks in the freezer but only salted butter, would it still work?

StuntNun · 21/04/2021 16:46

Yes just add less salt.

nowlook · 21/04/2021 17:07

I take ibruprofen for a few days beforehand @OnceUponAMidnightBeery (I think because StuntNun recommended it). Really makes a difference. Noresthisterone does the same and is utterly brilliant if you ever need to delay your period for any reason. I get it prescribed online and keep a supply in case notorious day 2 ever falls at a time I can't be chained to my own fecking loo. Flights. Motorway journeys. Any meeting longer than an hour. Also a shout out for those period pants which have meant in recent months that I can sleep at night without worrying about the inevitable flooding. Alternative Oscar acceptance speech right there Grin

nowlook · 21/04/2021 17:20

And Grin at I’m now thinking it may be my eyebrows putting them off @OnceUponAMidnightBeery. I don't have green fingers either, but find it hard to imagine that tulips would be anything other than charmed by my mid-90s Christina Aguillera's.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 21/04/2021 17:35

Still prefer your Oscar speech to Gwyneths @nowlook Grin (shows age)

I can see period pants (Any brand recommendations btw?) and ibuprofen are going to become my new best friends 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m sure tulips bloom at the very sight of your eyebrows @nowlook Grin whereas turnips would wither at mine!

Thanks @StuntNun, looking in the cupboard that’s not the only ingredient I’m out of Well I do have pepper and salt Blush so that’s a quick shop and tomorrow’s dinner sorted. I’ll fry mushrooms with it, yum.

Have to keep reminding myself to eat, haven’t been hungry once. Gin cravings on the other hand Hmm

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 21/04/2021 17:39

Day off here, ignoring the housework (it started it) so reading through previous bc. Every time I see ShagMeRiggins post or be mentioned I have a swig of water Grin

ListenLinda · 21/04/2021 17:40

Got my thai curry simmering away, smells beautiful! Adding broccoli with it.
Stayed strong today when everyone else was eating sandwiches and salads, took myself to morrisons for a salad bowl, cooked chicken chunks and cheese portions! Proud of myself Smile

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/04/2021 17:52

Ibuprofen definitely makes heavy periods more manageable both in terms of heaviness and pain. I too usually start taking it a day or two beforehand though I’m hoping HRT means things will be lighter and less painful. I also found this WOE helped hugely in stabilising my hormones more generally so I was less moody and tearful.
