The final weigh-in thread: March 2021 Low Carb Bootcamp

Here's the spreadsheet

I think this has been a really fantastic Bootcamp. Lots of really great losses.

As well as that, though, like every Bootcamp I'm always amazed and often humbled by how much we get to know people. We may all be here because we're trying to lose weight, but there's so much more going on in people's lives.

Tomorrow is the final weigh-in, but I hope very much that people will continue to check in and update us all on 'their journey' (sorry for the cliché)

@FusionChefGeoff not in my experience. Or at least not after a day of off-piste eating. If I've had a lot of carbs then it may take 3 days to get back into fat burning mode, but there's been no 'keto flu'.

Our lunch today was glorious (but chilly and windy). Spinach soup for tea.

Happy Easter, bootcamp bunnies Easter SmileEaster GrinEaster Wink

@Cactusowl that's a great BMI milestone, well done!

Barbecue went well, though very cold. We had 2 chimneas going all evening. I'm really proud of myself, food wise. Despite drinking well over a bottle of red wine, I did not give in to any carby temptations despite sitting next to a bowl of my favourite crisps (onion rings) and all the marshmallow toasting. I had two SLC rolls with my meat mountain, unfortunately I didn't eat any salad though!

Hungover slightly this morning, but only ate less than 1/4 of my 70% chocolate egg. Made pizza toasts (thickly sliced white bread, topped and grilled) for everyone for lunch and I had salami air fried, topped with a smear of tomato paste and a sprinkle of cheese. Made interesting pizza tasting treat, but very greasy and messy!
Had a mug cake for afternoon treat after tidying the garden. Bolognese for dinner, will probably have mine with courgettes.
So, a fair amount of carbs but nothing actually off limits.

cheeseisthebest · 04/04/2021 18:27

Happy Easter everyone!

FusionChefGeoff · 04/04/2021 21:46

Woops - seems like I am easily led and will be finding out for myself tomorrow Blush. After a tapas based feast which at least kept me away from the crumpets and hot cross
buns, I gave in to the call of the 's'mores around the fire pit. 2 marshmallows, 2 lebinz choc layer biscuits and 3 Oreos.

Tomorrow is another day!!

ouchmyfeet · 05/04/2021 07:16

Also had a carby and boozy day, but it was Easter and also my birthday, and I did it mindfully and really enjoyed it, so I'm keeping it in perspective.

Made the chocolate cake from the diet doctor website that someone recommended. Never thrown an entire cake in the bin before, it was awful. It did at least limit my consumption! I enjoyed the strawberries and cream that were going to accompany the cake and managed not to tuck into trifle with everyone else Easter Grin

StuntNun · 05/04/2021 07:57

Oh no Ouchmyfeet was the cake that bad? I did wonder as it doesn't have any sugar at all in the recipe. Happy birthday for yesterday.

Bestbees · 05/04/2021 08:06

@ouchmyfeet happy birthday for yesterday!

I had a very boozy day yesterday with plenty of carbs too. However still not as many as I would have had previously. Now planning for a strict Mon to Fri. Anyone with me? I know is between camps but I actually want to do it! It's about health for me. I woke up in the night with heartburn and felt sick this morning.

Plan for today: long walk with sister and a 5k run this afternoon.
L:courgette with tuna, capers and red onion.
D:lamb curry with cauli rice

nowlook · 05/04/2021 08:13

Morning all!

The weather was very kind to us yesterday here in Derbyshire. I stayed on plan with food, but also shared a bottle of fizz and a bottle of red with Dsis.

Food was successful for once! I made a lovely cucumber, radish, celery and shallot salad with parsley and a simple lemon/olive oil dressing. Would definitely make again.

easy salad

For the non-BC lot, I made some very easy Japanese chicken thigh burgers and new potatoes. They were all hoovered up. Just chicken thighs with the salad for me.

Japanese chicken burgers

Happy Birthday for yesterday @ouchmyfeet ThanksEaster Smile

I've bought strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and cream for my birthday supper tomorrow as that will be nice and easy Grin - but I am making an ordinary but very special cake for my birthday cake. I'll have a slice Wink and then give away most of it Halo. It looks like it's going to be too cold and windy for many people (except stalwarts like my SIL and BIL Grin although she is having a bad reaction to her jag Sad) to come round (in staggered groups of two) for drinks in the patio, even with multiple fire pits Shock

nowlook · 05/04/2021 08:19

And happy birthday @ouchmyfeet

Yes, I need to be stricter with the booze next week @Bestbees, so will join you.

Happily, side effects from the vaccine have been minimal for me. Few chills and hip pain overnight, but nothing that a couple of paracetamol didn't cure.

nowlook · 05/04/2021 08:21

Can't wait to see what an "ordinary" prettybird cake looks like!

Will there be new earrings?

prettybird · 05/04/2021 08:50

That's up to dh Wink

ouchmyfeet · 05/04/2021 08:58

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I will join you @Bestbees , I want to start the next bootcamp at least a couple of pounds below where I finished the last one so hopefully I can spend the week righting yesterday's wrongs! House is still full of chocolate but none of it mine so the road ahead looks clear.

I love radishes @nowlook, definitely going to try that salad. I have no rapeseed oil, wonder if sesame would be nice? Or just plain old olive

prettybird · 05/04/2021 09:00

I went through a gazillion 12 eggs yesterday Shock making a Simnel cake (ds loves it Smile), more sourdough hot cross buns (as they were such a success with dh and ds and I've also been giving away some to friends) and Nigella's chocolate lime cake (low carb version with Erythritol) for dessert last night.

I'm going to have to pop out to Lidl again to get more so I have enough for my Othello cake and birthday breakfast in bed Shock

cheeseisthebest · 05/04/2021 09:05

My house is full of chocolate too but I actually have no desire to eat it. Feel slightly sick looking at it all.

prettybird · 05/04/2021 09:08

I'm not mad keen on celery unless it's celery and Stilton soup nowlook but I reckon that salad would work ok with just shallots, cucumber, radishes and parsley Smile - and even better, I already have all the ingredients Grin

ouchmyfeet - I think sesame oil would be too strongly flavoured. A decent substitute to rape seed oil is light olive oil - although I'll probably just use EVOO. Although on second thoughts, the pepperiness of EVOO might be too much with the radishes, so I might use my light olive oil instead.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 05/04/2021 09:12

We had an amazing day yesterday! We had friends round, and some more dropped in, and it felt almost like normal life.

Christmas tablecloth, crackers and music. Prawn cocktail to start so a little bit of carb. Then roast turkey, roast ham, black pudding and prune stuffing, pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese, carrots, red cabbage, and a fab Marsala gravy.
Next course was some amazing cheeses with fruit and nut toasts, followed by Nigella’s Yule log and the sherry trifle made to the Prawn Cocktail Years recipe.
There were four adults (plus one additional one briefly) and we drank three bottles of champagne, two bottles of red, bottle of dessert wine, plus port and brandy.

Today is a lovely new day!

Timetobuckup · 05/04/2021 09:38

Morning all

I popped by a few days ago and have signed up for the next bootcamp.

I have now read the India Knight book up to day 1 and ordered all the supplements she reccomended. Not sure if that was completely necessary but she made it sound like it was?

My shiny new notebook is ready and now I just have to stop making Easter holiday excuses and just get on with it I guess.

I do feel a bit daunted by all the info and how big a change it is going to be but I am also excited.

Would you suggest I start as soon as the supplements arrive or wait until the 12th ?

Thank you for reading my waffle Grin

nowlook · 05/04/2021 09:48

I was in exactly the same boat @ouchmyfeet! I just used olive oil because I was worried that the sesame would be overwhelming.

The salad was very pretty and will keep well too. No soggy lettuce Grin

Dailyhandtowelwash · 05/04/2021 09:48

Hello!

Just crack right on when boot camp starts. I’ve never taken a supplement in my life. Grin

BIWI · 05/04/2021 09:55

@Timetobuckup well done on the preparations! I especially like the shiny new notebook. Love a bit of stationery Grin

I was never sure about the recommendation for supplements, as it kind of suggests that you aren't eating well enough, which I would say definitely isn't the case on Bootcamp - especially given the insistence (as it's a rule!) that most of our carbs should come from veg and salad.

However, you may need to supplement for electrolytes. The first few days of a low carb diet, plus the amount of water that you'll be drinking, may mean that you suffer from what's called carb or keto flu. You need sodium, magnesium and potassium in particular.

For sodium, make sure you're cooking with salt and adding it to your food. You can make up a hot drink with Oxo or Bovril or Marmite, or add salt and lemon juice to a glass of water.

Good food sources of the electrolytes are salmon, avocado, spinach and full fat natural yoghurt.

The supplement I'd suggest is called Zero, by High5 which you can buy from their website or from Holland & Barratt.

Shock

Well, they won't be doing you any harm, I don't suppose!

Timetobuckup · 05/04/2021 10:06

I think I got a bit carried away , I am not usually so obedient. I will just have expensive pee for a while I suppose. When I remember to take them ....

The book was good however , I did find it interesting.

BIWI · 05/04/2021 10:11

Yes, it is a really good book, particularly because both India and Neris wrote it based on their own experiences. It gives you a much better insight into the psychological side of things.

Have you read other books about low carbing? The one I'd recommend - if you haven't - is "Escape The Diet Trap", by Dr John Briffa. Also, Gary Taubes "The Diet Delusion", although that one is a bit of a weighty tome!
