Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 8 - the last three weeks!

BIWI · 08/03/2021 07:45

Morning all.

The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Hope it's been a good week - lots of challenges going on! I challenged myself to cook something different with cauliflower yesterday as I was getting bored of the same old same old, and so found a recipe for Bang Bang cauliflower, which I adapted slightly to make it more low carb friendly. I shall post that later.

In the meantime, I hope that the scales or the measuring tape have been kind to you!

Here's to a good next week. Remember we only have three left, so if things are slacking a bit, time to get stricter again.

ahh, big hug for you, Bustle. Sometimes things really are worth crying about, it's allowed Flowers

Nothing to report here, all more or less on plan, dull as fuck. Work quite stressy still but a few days off next week so am going to just bloody go for it, and pick an inordinately complicated recipe off one of the threads, and do something impressive in the kitchen.

(there's a lot of rain in the forecast)

Mrsbrownsgargoyle · 11/03/2021 20:00

How do you teachers and TAs manage with the water intake? Having time to drink it/top it up and needing the loo all the time? I'm in the office and fortunately have free run of the loo while everyone else is in the classrooms.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 11/03/2021 20:04

@nowlook I actually giggled out loud for far too long at 'horse house'
@1stMrsF excellent post yesterday. I'm like you, not lost a huge amount so far and very slow some weeks, but I'd rather eat the dairy and not worry about my portion sizes and actually stick to this, than feel like I'm on a diet. I've lost 50lbs on this WOE in the past so I know it works and I know how stop-start it can be. I'm not worried, though it can be a bit annoying.
I was convinced I'd had a whoosh, after a few days of good water consumption, quite a lot of BMs and a lot of weeing. Nope, 1lb on! However I had PMT this morning so possibly that, plus I had a lot of wind today (that smelled like a badger had crawled up my arse and died, got to love period farts).

Breakfast - creamy coffee
Lunch - leftover moussaka. Small bar of 85% chocolate.
Dinner - 2 beef burgers in a SLC roll, cheesy celeriac fries and coleslaw.

@LibbyL92

Hello everyone!

Been very quiet, back at school this week and it’s wiped me out.

Feel like I’m slipping off the wagon slightly. All meals have been on plan, however boyfriend made a milkshake the other night and I tasted it. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it all adds up with having a try of this, and a try of that.
As a result I put 2lbs on.

Water in take has dropped massively as well. Been so busy in school I’m forgetting to drink.

Just feeling a bit meh! Trying hard not to slip completely off. Hopefully I’ll get back into it! Today was definitely better.

Grin

BIWI won't like that 'hopefully' Shock

You're in charge, right? Right. Then you will get back into it, because that's what you've decided.

You've learnt small carby bits and bobs still count. Excellent, remember it for the next two weeks and you'll be flying.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 11/03/2021 20:08

I had celeriac yesterday, and my god the activity. Little bubbles racing each other round my ribcage for HOURS until they, er, found the exit.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 11/03/2021 20:09

Oh and the lip twitch is back! It went for a week, now it's back. It seemed to go when I wasn't drinking as much water, even though I also stopped the electrolyte tablets. They never seem to make it go away, so it isn't that. Though they don't contain much potassium at all, lack of which is apparently the most likely culprit. I should be getting enough from food though, I really can't work out what's going on.
It could be totally unrelated to low carb and just a coincidence... Those do happen.

BIWI · 11/03/2021 20:09

@BustleInYourHedgerow and @FusionChefGeoff

@FusionChefGeoff I've been feeling the same - bit jittery and strange. Also my rhr is gone from low 50s on my fitbit to low 60s. Which is quite high for me. When I exercise and lay off the booze it would normally be in the high 40s so something is up.

Definitely sounds like an electrolyte issue. I'd also try and up your carbs a little bit to see if this helps you. A slice of wholemeal toast, for example.

I had a totally sleepless night recently thanks to Jerusalem artichokes. I love the little fuckers so much but they are having worse and worse effects on me.
Ninkanink · 11/03/2021 20:16

@Dailyhandtowelwash have you tried boiling/simmering them in lemon juice before you cook with them? That is supposed to neutralise or break down the...uh...whatever it is that humans can’t properly digest.

Ninkanink · 11/03/2021 20:18

@BustleInYourHedgerow Flowers those low moods and accompanying tears can really knock you for a loop.

does that work for celeriac/any windy veg, Nink, or do we only know about Jartichokes?

We did try boiling them in water, which did improve things. But lemon juice is worth a shot. I bought more last weekend that are yet to be cooked. Thank you!

BIWI · 11/03/2021 20:21

OMG - Jerusalem artichokes! One Christmas I made a purée with them, at DH's request. It was lovely. But the after effects were something else. I have never been in such pain from wind. And the smell ... Shock

nowlook · 11/03/2021 20:23

Aren't they tres carby little twats too @Dailyhandtowelwash? I have a tin of them in the pantry and they glare at me sullenly from behind the stuff that actually gets eaten here by the DC: tuna, baked beans, Heinz tomato soup.

I thought that was the dog Ragz! Not just your fries that are dirty, eh Grin

Ninkanink · 11/03/2021 20:24

@AthelstaneTheUnready I think it’s just the fartichokes...it’s the carbohydrate inulin that can’t be digested which causes the problem.

Dailyhandtowelwash · 11/03/2021 20:26

No, they are really not carby! That is why they are so annoying. Or rather, they've got a decent amount of carbs per 100g but are full of inulin, which brings the carb effect right down, but also gives you the wind from hell. BUT it depends how long you keep them as the longer they sit around, the lower the inulin gets, so they become more digestible but the carbs rocket. You can't win with them but they are soo delicious.
AthelstaneTheUnready · 11/03/2021 20:27

oooh, a quick google says that

Asparagus
Bananas
Burdock
Chicory, which is used in salads
Dandelion root
Garlic
Jerusalem artichokes
Leeks
Onions

contain inulin. I can get a bit funny not ha ha on onions. Not leeks though. The idea of boiling a pan of that lot up in lemon juice suddenly puts me off the whole idea.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 11/03/2021 20:29
Dailyhandtowelwash · 11/03/2021 20:29

Our FLGV last night was leeks and cabbage, which definitely delivered on the fart front too.

nowlook · 11/03/2021 20:29

Well they look suspicious Daily. You can keep your fartichokes.

Please, please, please let this be about net carbs. I love how calm and measured BIWI is when those crop up...
@AthelstaneTheUnready I think it’s just the fartichokes...it’s the carbohydrate inulin that can’t be digested which causes the problem.
Thanks, Nink.

Are there any other problems in life that you suggest "boil it in acid" for?

Ninkanink · 11/03/2021 20:34

I could probably just about cope with the farts again (sometimes it’s worth it)...there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say...but the pain!! I’ve not had pain like that from anything else, ever! And poor DH suffered much more than I did, for about 24 hrs.

nowlook · 11/03/2021 20:35

I've googled and am none the wiser. Summat to do with fructose rather than glucose, according to a pollinator name of John on a gardening forum six years ago. Wonder if he's peer-reviewed.

nowlook · 11/03/2021 20:37

John says also chicory Nink and Athelstane.

Ninkanink · 11/03/2021 20:38

I thankfully don’t really suffer with that side effect from any of the other culprits, thank goodness.

@AthelstaneTheUnready I feel sure there’s a whole list of BOIL IT IN ACID ‘life hacks’ somewhere!
