Week 3 - Jan '21 Low Carb Bootcamp - time for Light?

BIWI · 31/01/2021 11:40

Well thanks to all the chat, I've had to start this week's thread earlier than usual Grin

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to declare all

You now have a choice: you can move on to Bootcamp Light, which means you can re-introduce nuts and seeds, some fruit and alcohol - all in moderation.

However, also bear in mind that weeks 3 & 4 are notorious for little or not weight loss and this is nothing to do with moving on to Bootcamp Light. It's just something that seems to happen.

So it's up to you. You can stay on Bootcamp if you wish, or move on to Bootcamp Light, or a hybrid - so you do Bootcamp during the week but relax into Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever you decide - good luck! Here's to a good week ahead.

As @ouchmyfeet said, have faith, it will work. But also remember that beyond the weightloss there are very strong health benefits to low carb, high fat. There is a LOT of robust science (actual science, not just made up stuff like most of what we’re told about diet is...) behind this WOE. If you’ve not read into it, do so, as it will really help when people question it.

NotwatchingSpooks · 06/02/2021 10:52

Morning, thank you for the lovely photos they have brightened my morning. I’m desperate to see the sea or be in the mountains, but as I live on the outskirts of London, I’m making do with the royal parks which are fabulous but sadly not the same.

For those struggling with week 3 gains, trust those of us who have been here a while, it will come off, so just KOKO. I’m not someone who looses big amounts each week, but through very slow losses and plateaus and the occasional whoosh, I am a stone stone down since September. I can eat the same, go a week or 2 with very little movement on the scales, just little up and down around a number, then a slight dip, then another hoover, then a slight dip. As others have said it’s not linear, it’s actually quite a bumpy line but it will gradually move downwards. More importantly I feel like I have just changed how I eat, not that I am on a diet. Of course I’m looking forward to being able to have a glass of wine etc, but I see that as adding to this, rather than going back to how I used to eat.

Tell me If you can be bothered what is the @Boswell mystery?, is it worth finding and reading the thread?

Today
B Greek yogurt with teaspoon double cream
L a platter of charcuterie with some homemade celaric roulade
D either chicken or salmon with flgv

We have also got a leg of lamb for tomorrow 😀

I find this with my husband too cringy. Last night asking me if I was having wine, why wasn't I having pizza etc. It's none of his business. If I was eating a family size bag of crisps and drinking a bottle of wine he would say nothing. Is he not comfortable with you changing? Keep at it for a few weeks and wait to see how much better you feel now you are not a slave to sugar and carbs. Your body, your choice.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 06/02/2021 10:54

Had a decent breakfast today as its the weekend. Boiled some eggs and was just going to have them with bacon, but remembered I should be eating some veg, so I finished the frozen sprouts with bacon. Flaked a bit of goats cheese over them, mayo on the eggs. Hopefully that's enough fat. Could have added butter to the sprouts actually, probably would have been really nice! Have also had a creamy coffee. Feeling pleasantly full.
Whipped up some pancake batter and left the younger two frying pancakes in the kitchen. I am not mad keen on pancakes, so no desire to eat them.

@NotwatchingSpooks I am intrigued too, but it may be one of those things where you had to have read the original thread or something. Slight FOMO.

NotwatchingSpooks · 06/02/2021 11:04

For those dealing with others negative comments another good idea is to show them ice cream’s ingredients. I saw this on the tv doctor who is a twin’s Tv program.
No one would comment on a portion of ice cream in a bowl for desert. But if you put the ingredients to make that ice cream in separate bowls ie double cream in one, sugar in another and whatever flavourings in another, they would probably make a comment if you ate the cream on its own. However the really interesting thing is that you would probably not be able to eat the sugar on its own, but by mixing it with the cream you suddenly can. It’s like that with butter, remember your not having fat which is hidden with carbs in cakes, biscuits, crisps etc.

Yes exactly! I find it maddening that people honestly feel more comfortable with an individual having huge amounts of alcohol, eating loads of saturated fat (not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, mind, in moderation - I hold with @StuntNun on this) in unhealthy carby/sugary products, plus usually a consuming diet lacking in a wide range of vegetables, as well as feeling rubbish and being overweight.

I’m eating well, feeling well, sleeping well, having lots and lots of vegetables and natural, clean foods, regulating my hormones (which are the basis of everything in the body!), have cut out most processed foods (or only have a little here and there). And my diabetes consultants have always been completely behind the benefits of LCHF. So unless you (the collective you) can come up with some actual evidence for your position, you’re really not in a position to criticise.

Ninkanink · 06/02/2021 11:16

Here is the thread that started it all:

BOSWELL

It has been a bit of a maddening mystery and people eventually concluded that it must have been a troll post and there was no answer to the riddle.

Once you have read as far you want to on the first (and subsequent) threads, I’ll post the one that solved the mystery. But I have to find it first.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 06/02/2021 11:22

God, people, no, no. No, don't search out Boswell if you didn't originally read it. It is agonisingly frustrating, goes nowhere, and even the 'end' is aggravatingly feeble.

Knitters - check out the woollyhugs threads if you want a small burst of knitting (or crochet) to do for someone else.

Roast chicken for me today, my absolute favourite.

B: coffee
L: overslept this morning so can't work out if lunch is a thing
D: will probably be mid-afternoon lunch of roast chicken, with more roast chicken later in the day. Plus piles of sprouts, courgettes, broccoli, roast garlic and some roast parsnip.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 06/02/2021 11:23

cross posted Nink

How could you DO that to people?! Wink

Ninkanink · 06/02/2021 11:25

Haha haha that’s what FOMO will do to you! Wink

AthelstaneTheUnready · 06/02/2021 11:25

solution is somewhere in here

But seriously, don't. Go watch grass grow, or something equally dynamic instead.

AWryGiraffe · 06/02/2021 11:26

Weighed in this morning at 11'7.75 - so finally shifted the random 3 pounds that appeared during my period. Going to do some yoga shortly before having lunch of probably a cheesy omelette with peppers and mushrooms, had a small Greek yog for breakfast. Dinner will be a cottage pie out the freezer with a cheesy cauliflower mash topping and a side of fried cabbage.

It's truly dreadful weather in West York's, and due to snow all week. Praying nursery doesn't close!

Read the first 6 posts of the original and decided it was unlikely to be interesting. I'll take your word for it and drop it! @AWryGiraffe congratulations on your loss.
BustleInYourHedgerow · 06/02/2021 11:44

Yes Ninkanink!

I'm not even clicking on that Boswell thing I have zero headspace for ANYTHING at the moment. I can't even watch a serious TV show.

AWryGiraffe, I'm hoping for snow we nevwr really get it here. Might break the monotony. But I have no school at the moment so I suppose that's why it wouldn't bother me.

Pleaseandthankyou · 06/02/2021 11:55

@prettybird I love your blanket. That will be a family heirloom. Did you have a pattern? Did you knit it in strips? The cushion is gorgeous too.

Ninkanink · 06/02/2021 12:05

I actually quite like the riddle! If it had been a) told properly and b) resolved within a reasonable amount of time, id’ve thought it was quite clever...

But after having achieved legendary status on here it’s just a bit meh by now!

I can’t even imagine how cross/embarrassed the OP is going to be if/when she hears it properly (depending on whether or not it was mis-told to her or by her)!

BIWI · 06/02/2021 12:07

@cringyminge

Morning all

Really struggling to adjust my mindset. Just cooking breakfast in front of my partner and Fair to say he's horrified the amount of butter I'm using to cook everything - about to eat bacon eggs and mushrooms.

@cringyminge it's really, really, really important that you understand the science behind low carbing, as this will help you adjust your mindset.

Go to the spreadsheet and have a read/look at the resources on there.

I can also highly recommend The Diet Doctor's website for lots of information

It's not surprising that partners/friends/family question what we're doing, because for the last 40 years or so we've been told that fat is bad and carbs are good, whereas in fact it's quite the opposite.

It's also quite a shocking thing when you realise that the whole move towards eating less fat was not based on proper science - but was based originally on politics and then fuelled by the media. Once 'Big Food' picked up on it and started developing low fat products, it became utterly entrenched in the way we think we should eat. And now there are too many vested interests in keeping us eating that way, despite rising obesity levels.

Conveniently/often blamed on 'us' for eating too much junk food - no responsibility taken by the manufacturers of food that makes people fat (ice-cream story up thread is a great example of that).

It's 'our' fault we got fat, because have no will power, eat too much junk food and don't take enough exercise. Nothing to do with the fact that the advice to eat mainly carbohydrate and very little fat will make us fat!

Two really good books to read about this are Gary Taubes "The Diet Delusion" and Nina Teicholz "The Big Fat Surprise"

@AWryGiraffe woohoo and well done for keeping the faith and KOKO.

LittleMy77 · 06/02/2021 12:45

Had a vodka (with ice and lime) last night and it went straight to my head!

Cooked up a storm today as the weather is crap; mini frittatas, almond flour scone bread things (thanks @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal for recipe on prior thread!) roasted cauliflower, stuffed aubergine and would have done slow cooker chicken on peppers if dh had bought the chicken

It’s maddening he insists on doing the grocery shop and the doesn’t get stuff on the bloody list! I wouldn’t mind but chicken isn’t a niche hard to find ingredient...

Ninkanink · 06/02/2021 12:51

Yes it’s important to be aware that alcohol lowers your blood sugar levels (that’s actually what causes the feeling of being drunk) so if you’re already keeping it very low you need to be careful as you will get properly drunk on very little. It’s also why you want carby foods when you’re drunk - the body is trying to get carbs in to remedy your blood sugars going too low.

LostaraYil · 06/02/2021 13:01

A bit off topic, but inspired by low carb dieting I've been looking into feeding my arthritic dog an anti-inflammatory diet of real food, mainly meat with a bit of veg, low carb. But reading about it lots of articles say you shouldn't give dogs much fat e.g. no chicken skin. This makes no sense to me. Does anyone have experience of feeding dogs a real food diet?

StuntNun · 06/02/2021 13:09

I like that ice cream analogy Spooks. I remember having breakfast at a hotel with two work colleagues who were appalled that I unwrapped the little butter slices and put them on my cooked breakfast. But if I'd spread them on the toast then that would have been fine even though it would have meant me eating more food as a result.

Yes I hate that BIWI I had a BMI of 27 when I first started Bootcamp. Not too bad you might say but I was following the healthy eating guidelines, cutting all the fat off my food, exercising... and gradually gaining weight. Some people, maybe even most people, cannot thrive in the current food environment.
@prettybird I love your blanket. That will be a family heirloom. Did you have a pattern? Did you knit it in strips? The cushion is gorgeous too.
Yes, I had a pattern. It was a repeat of my mum's last big project after her accident and before she'd started to deteriorate too much the fronto-temporal dementia that the head injury induced. She got the pattern from her bridesmaid. I had a panic just over 6 years ago when I lost the pattern but fortunately my dad was in South Africa at the time and was able to get another copy from Mum's bridesmaid.

Her version is on my Dad's sofa although my mum initially made it for their bed.

It's knitted in long strips although once they were sewn together I had to pick up stitches to do the moss stitch stitches on the top and bottom, using long circular needles.
