Week 5 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - the end of the first half

Morning all Flowers

This week sees the end of the first half of Bootcamp. The last two weeks may have been tough going, as you might have seen weight loss slow or even stop.

But this has been an important transition period, as your body has been switching from burning carbs for fuel, to burning fat. So from now on, the weight loss you will see will be entirely fat. And hopefully from week 5, you should see the scales showing a weekly loss too!

By now, hopefully, you have also have become a bit more accustomed to low carb eating, so that it's becoming a bit more of a habit. Once things are habitual, it's a lot easier to stick with things, as they're more routine.

Anyway, here's the spreadsheet for this week's 'confession'!

@Oneborneverydecade please don't apologise for detailing the thread, you've had a horrendous shock. I hope you and DH are able to come up with a plan so you feel more in control. Sorry this had happened.

Does anyone else sort of go jiggly before a woosh? Where the fat seems less "dense" for want of a better word? My tummy has gone all wobbly and I think it means a woosh is in the offing, at least I hope so and I'm not totally deluding myself!

NigellaAwesome · 12/11/2020 22:31

Hello everyone,

I haven't been on the thread for a couple of days, life has been getting in the way in quite a big way. I have managed to stick to low carb, but sub optimal boot camp. Not enough water or veg.

B: tomato basil and cheese omelette
L: none.
S: some nuts
D: roast chicken and turnip chips
2 coffees with almond milk and cream

Sorry to hear your news @Oneborneverydecade

Doilooklikeatourist · 12/11/2020 22:34

@Oneborneverydecade💐

Re the low carb cafe / restaurant meals .. I used to work in a cafe , we used to have a low carb dish on every day ( we'd call it super salad )
For example
Big bowl of salad greens , then either avo and warm poached salmon with mayo , olive oil dressing and a lemon to squeeze , or warm boiled eggs or ( my favourite) fried bacon lardons and mushrooms , with crumbled Stilton .. what did everyone ask ? Is it served with some potatoes ? Or bread ?

Living in Wales , bread or potatoes is needed in every main meal , and being 60ish , DH falls into that mindset , I think there's a law that if it's Sunday , it's roast potatoes

Anyway , had a good day , loads of water , lovely wrap less fajitas with sour cream and avo on top for dinner ( with wrap and potato wedges for DH and DD ... age 23 and size 8 )

Rshard · 13/11/2020 07:06

What a shock oneborneverysecond, hope you manage to find a way through it.

Kudos to you buffy, also doing a degree so I know how hard it is to juggle alongside everything else

VeryLittleOwl · 13/11/2020 07:59

Sorry to hear that Oneborneverydecade - a friend had a similar shock a few years ago, she only found out because they were moving house and needed a bigger mortgage (she was the higher earner of the two). They did get through it okay, because he was prepared to sit down and tell her exactly how it happened and she felt she could trust him not to do it again. Hope it all works out for you.

The scales look like they might be moving again for me, but I'm not sure whether it's the side effects of having an extra wee (sorry, TMI...) in the early hours because the dogs woke me up barking at something. Less than a pound from going into the 10s, so I'm hoping by Monday's weigh-in...

Lyrata · 13/11/2020 07:59

I’m also doing a degree! It’s hard, isn’t it?

I had a great NSV yesterday. I managed to run for 30 minutes straight - 3 miles. I was really pleased. I used to run to work 3-5 times a week but I had Covid in March and with lockdown, my fitness has really deteriorated. It’s amazing to realise I can still do it.

Yesterday I had some great mackerel pate with cloud bread, broccoli and Stilton soup and braised red cabbage with chicken.

Rshard · 13/11/2020 08:39

Spooky lyrata, that’s three of us. It is hard, I’ve blocked a day out of my diary today to devote to study! Obviously I’m here on MN

StuntNun · 13/11/2020 08:56

Yes Mimosa it's usually called squishy fat and precedes a whoosh.

I hope this is what I'm experiencing then!

@QueenPaws That's an interesting idea! Thanks for sharing that Smile

Aha @StuntNun and @poorbuthappy - I'll keep hoping this squishy fat means a woosh and not just general squishyness !

The weather is hideous today in the south east and we have no lights in my dining room / home office due to an ill advised attempt at re-wiring our ceiling light. Roll on the weekend...

NotwatchingSpooks · 13/11/2020 10:03

Morning, I am delighted to hear about ‘squishy fat’ .

After 2 weeks of staying the same, gaining a pound, it looks like the scales are moving again, so I am hopeful that if I koko and don’t get too derailed by a birthday this weekend, I will see a loss on the scales this week. What has been strange is the weird dreams that I have been having and I wonder if there is any correlation between them and the pounds starting to shift again in week 5. Last nights involved loads of joints of meat taken out of freezer and defrosting, with me worrying how I could cook them all and eat them before they went off 😂 not a dream I had ever had before (that I remember). Also I only have a small freezer !!

My food planned for today is;
B Greek Yogurt - food of the gods
L 1/2 avocado and 2 eggs, some homemade slaw
D Beef curry, Jamie Oliver does a lamb curry in one of his books and I’m going to have a look for a beef version and then tweak it, will serve it with FLGV.

BIWI thanks for pointing out my previous lunches were not good enough, I’ve been having avocado and buttery scrambled eggs and my afternoon cravings have gone.

Also, a PP mentioned Brussel sprouts in salad, Nadiya Hussain Uses sprouts in her Brussel Sprout Slaw recipe, which is really good;

250g/9oz Brussels sprouts, trimmed and thinly sliced
1 red onion, thinly sliced - I would use half a shallot
2 carrots, peeled and grated - I would reduce to 1
100g/3½oz cashew nuts, roughly chopped - I would probably leave out Or just use a few sprinkled on top
1 tsp cumin seeds
100g/3½oz Greek-style yoghurt
50g/1¾oz full-fat mayonnaise
1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
½ unwaxed lemon, zest and juice
large handful fresh chives, finely chopped
large handful fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

Liking that sprout salad Notwatching and also very happy about the squishy fat news, that's 100% my belly this last couple of days. I'm only back at where I'd got down to in the second week after some derailment! 123.6 today.

Wet weekend forecast means menu planning for the week, shopping for food, cooking food and eating it likely to be the highlights! Hoping to squeeze a run in.

Hopeislost · 13/11/2020 10:17

There's a keto restaurant in Hammersmith that I found on Instagram. The website is www.ketorestaurant.uk if you fancy a nosey!

prettybird · 13/11/2020 10:44

NotwatchingSpooks - why not substitute a few roughly chopped macadamia nuts to that salad? They're amongst the least carby of nuts (whereas cashew nuts are amongst the most Shock) and they would still give a nice bit of crunch and richness.

NotwatchingSpooks · 13/11/2020 11:00

prettybird good idea 😀 thank you, I do try to limit my consumption of nuts as they are a bit of a slippery slope for me .

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/11/2020 11:00

Is anyone else sitting here prodding their stomachs to see if it's squishy?
Mine just feels fat Grin

itsmeagainagain · 13/11/2020 12:29

Happy Friday everyone I'm back in the game! Thanks for all your nice messages much appreciated Smile. I've stayed low carb this week despite my low mood and feel all the better for not just throwing in the towel. Have been doing lots of reading too especailly revisitin 'The Obesity Code' and a new one I've just started called 'What the Fat' which is really great and enforcing why this is such a great way of eating. Brilliant progress pics @Oneborneverydecade and @prettybird well done!!! Sorry to hear about your shock @Oneborneverydecade Sad hope you can work it out together. I really recommend the 'debt free diaries' on Moneysaving expert forum and also YNAB as a great budgeting tool.
i've just had some yummy scrambled eggs with lots of butter and a tiny splash of worcester sauce delish... I think dinner will be bunless burger and a big rocket salad with parmesan shavings and avocado.
BTW I dont recommend making cauliflower cheese with frozen cauliflower 'rice' totally grim yuck

Mine always feels like squishy fat!
EarlGreyHot · 13/11/2020 14:32

Picked up some hake for dinner, was thinking of making this recipe fishonfriday.org.uk/spanish-hake-stew-2/ but omitting the beans and using shallots. The tinned tomatoes I have here are 3.6g carbs per 1/2 a tin but that should be fine I think? Chorizo seems fairly low in carbs. May throw in a glass of red wine instead of the white. I intend to serve it with broccoli and shredded greens and some allioli (if I can make it) on the side to up the fats

Takingontheundead · 13/11/2020 17:08

I'm wearing size 12 active wear today. Size 12! Size 18 was pushing it in June.

Also here's my dinner, sorry to bore again but its keeping me safe posting daily. Everyone else currently eating mcd's. Burgers are 5g carbs for both. X
