2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

  • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
  • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

Erm certainly TMI but I've not seen anyone else post about this so I have to ask!

I've currently got stomach cramps and had to take some immodium this morning when things started going South unexpectedly.

Any tips for managing bad bowels whilst doing low carb? I thought I'd be constipated rather than the opposite!

52andblue · 13/10/2020 16:58

@AthelstaneTheUnready

Ack, sorry *@52andblue*, I've added you but forgot to say... yes, tell me what weight you'd like entered and I'll do that (am a fellow internet interface numpty).
oh, THANK YOU @AthelstaneTheUnready

I am currently 165lbs goal is 135 (yeah, right... ;)

Hopeislost · 13/10/2020 17:01

I make a lot of homemade coleslaw but mix up the veg each time. Some low carb veg that work well are broccoli stalks, celeriac, courgette and fennel.

52andblue · 13/10/2020 17:02

sorry, didn't mean to be negative there about potential weight loss!

Where do I look for SOUP recipes please?
I eat a lot of soup...

prettybird · 13/10/2020 17:10

SquatBetty - that's another thing that will settle down Wink

SquatBetty · 13/10/2020 17:15

@prettybird thank you, bloody hope so!

ZiggZagg · 13/10/2020 17:32

@SquatBetty same here, seems to have calmed down today Wink

Omg totally forgot about this 🤣 it does pass!
LemonSea · 13/10/2020 17:40

Thank you for the coleslaw recipes, I will definitely make a version. Everyone is so helpful on here.

anewdispensation · 13/10/2020 17:46

Day 2 going ok and I have loved reading this thread. I am doing the intermittent fasting so no breakfast and I had greek yoghurt and some sprinkling of cinnamon for lunch. I now have a spatchcock chicken roasting in the oven which we are going to have with celeriac mash and buttered kale. The house smells divine.

I am suddenly very thirsty which has helped with water intake but I also think I am experiencing some carb flu as I am very tired but thankfully no headaches

BIWI · 13/10/2020 17:48

Very thirsty, if still drinking plenty of water, is a sign you need more sodium.

Lunch today was streaky bacon and eggs (scrambled in the bacon fat)
Dinner is going to be rainbow trout with cauli mash, pesto and asparagus

I'm not snacking so far which is impressive for me! Need to up the water intake though...

@52andblue have a gander here www.genaw.com/lowcarb/soup_recipes.html this is an old site but we’ll used by me back in the day. It’s Arkins based and American so as ever make sure you check carb content but it might give you an idea about things to play around with

Takingontheworld · 13/10/2020 17:57

Is there a recommended multu vit ? Feel like i should take one esp with winter looming

BIWI · 13/10/2020 18:00

@52andblue it's also worth checking the Bootcamp recipe threads for soups.

All the recipe threads are stickied at the top of the Bootcamp topic.

I'm also suffering from carb flu a bit today. Massive headache and feeling generally bleugh, so have been taking paracetamol (I don't suffer in silence, I take painkillers whenever necessary). I've got some of the electrolyte stuff and had that this morning too, which did help.

My meals today have been better I think.
B: FF Greek yogurt
L: creamy mushroom soup
D: currently being cooked by dh, not quite sure yet but there's lots of cooking noises coming from the kitchen.

I managed without snacks today, so yes it was just habit that had me eating them yesterday.

Stegasaurusmum · 13/10/2020 18:11

Day 2 here, long day at work and I'm starving... Mainly as I've not had much time to eat..
B. Yoghurt and cinnamon
L. Salad, cucumber, Tom's and salmon... Did have coleslaw but won't make the same mistake as it had carrot..
D. Not sure yet, hopefully shepherd's pie, shop bought, it'll have to be simple and quick but I'll just load up on veg and ignore the carrots and potatoes...
Snacks, a pepperami and 2 boiled eggs...my students always look at me funny as I crack an egg at breaktime they're used to me now though..

Whogivesatossedpancake · 13/10/2020 18:17

How much yoghurt are people eating for breakfast, I get the 500g pots of FF Greek yog and not sure what a normal LCHF portion should be?

52andblue · 13/10/2020 18:25

@Margaritawithlime

THANK YOU ! Flowers

MsAwesomeDragon · 13/10/2020 18:31

whogives I'm eating about a third of a 500g pot of yogurt for breakfast. I have no idea whether that's a normal portion of not, but it's enough for me to feel full.

My dinner turns out to be veg curry with cauli rice. It's lovely, and dh cooked it in plenty of oil, and added cream to it as well. Delicious.

BIWI · 13/10/2020 18:49

Portion sizes are up to you, in that there's no set portion size. That said, though, a whole 500g pot in one go does seem a lot!

The individual portions of Total (Fage) yoghurt are 170g, which would suggest that a third of the 500g pot is what you should be looking at.

OP posts:
Whogivesatossedpancake · 13/10/2020 18:56

@BIWI and @MsAwesomeDragon that seems a fair portion, I might buy the individual pots so I dont have to think about it

Totalshambles · 13/10/2020 19:02

Thanks for the headache tips @BIWI and @Midlifemission. Managed to avoid the toast so far. And ignoring the inner shouts of ‘chocolate‘ and ‘wine’ coming from some place deep within!

Benvolio · 13/10/2020 19:07

Colelaw people, try thinly sliced red cabbage, walnut and/or olive oil, white wine vinegar, roquefort and (not on bootcamp) walnuts. I usually put apple in too, but would still be nice without.

Benvolio · 13/10/2020 19:13

V busy work day, so no bfast, almond milk in several shitty, weak instant coffees.

L: a whole supermarket packet of microwaved tenderstem broccoli with tuna and mayo at my desk. Fizzy water.
