2020 Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp. The first week!

Welcome all.

Well what a strange year this has been! If you're anything like me, food, meals and eating have been all over the place. And that's before we think about the booze.

I found lockdown an odd mix of feeling like I was on holiday but it was also the end of the world. So what was the point of worrying about my diet?

I am lucky, relatively, in that we don't have small children to worry about educating. We also have a nice house and garden, and as me and DH have recently retired, don't have to worry about work. So we were very much advantaged over many people.

But still, the diet/drinking was all to pot. And with the inevitable result.

So we're now in the run up to Christmas - traditionally a time when diets go out of the window, and we start to indulge ourselves. Who knows what's going to happen this year though?!

So with that in mind, it's a good time to try and be focused and aim to have a bit of discipline! This Bootcamp, as with most others, will last for 10 weeks, which will take us right up to Christmas week.

(I truly hope that we'll all be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones, but who knows?)

With grateful thanks to @AthelstaneTheUnready, here is the Spreadsheet of Exceptional Fabulousness .

You should find that you're on the spreadsheet. A couple of things:

  • if you don't want to record your weight every week, that's absolutely fine. Just don't do it!
  • if you're not on it, just add your name to the bottom - don't try and re-alphabatize it - we'll sort it out later

The spreadsheet isn't just a place to record your weight though - have a good look at it, and the tabs - there's loads of information on there, including a veg carb counter and lots of stuff about low carbing in general. You'll also find Bootcamp rules there.

Ballsed up. Went to a local restaurant and had my favourite low carb chicken, avocado and parmesan salad. I've had it before but I forgot it had seeds in it. The no seeds / no alcohol thing is new for me though I've been doing low card for bit. Need to change some habits!

Margaritawithlime · 13/10/2020 15:08

I had bacon broccoli and mushroom for brunch. Spectacular Grin

52andblue · 13/10/2020 15:09

Am I too late to join please ???

Weight as of today is: 165 lbs. Aiming for 135, but any loss is good :)

That doesn't really sound like the end of the world! (But hopefully the dressing didn't have balsamic vinegar in it, did it?)

Can anyone recommend which flavour of Cheesies is the nicest ? The variety pack is out of stock at the moment, so I'm tempted to order pne of th others. I tend to like mature cheddar and emmental anyone tried both and could recommend one ?

52andblue · 13/10/2020 15:39

Thank you @BIWI

do I need to add my name / weight to a spreadsheet (not very tecchy, never used one before, erk!) ?

LemonSea · 13/10/2020 15:52

Enjoying reading the recipe/meal recommendations, the roasted broccoli and halloumi looks delicious also the spiced minced beef Keto bowl.

B 2 scrambled eggs in butter
L smoked mackerel fillet and spinach leaves
D roasted cauliflower in olive oil and black pepper (I can eat a whole head easily)

Totalshambles · 13/10/2020 15:53

Cracking headache, anyone else? Have had this every time I have LC’d before for days two and three. Drinking water with added salt but also knowing that a slice of toast would sort me out is hard to resist!

GoGoGone · 13/10/2020 15:59

I'm a day late but just checking in. Doing ok so far. Breakfast was 2 eggs scrambled in butter, bacon and avocado, lunch was salad with a little bit of goats cheese and olive oil dressing. Dinner will be lamb chops with veg in butter and celeriac mash.

My big challenge is not overdoing the dairy I think.

Look at these bad boys! Duck fritons... they look delicious

Hi all, today's going well but I need to get more on it with the water.

Quick question, I see lots of you are having homemade coleslaw- i love coleslaw! How are you making it? Are there any pre-made low carb ones about?

Thanks!

LemonSea · 13/10/2020 16:14

I would also love a coleslaw recipe.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/10/2020 16:17

So, I went out and bought loads of fruit teas, to help with water consumption. Also bought itsu seaweed thins and pork scratchings for lunch to keep salt levels up and stave off the desire to eat cake!
Breakfast was roast pork and chicken leftovers with a dollop of mayo and a babybel. Dinner will be either a risotto made with lots of veg and cauliflower rice instead of normal, or turkey mince tacos with sour cream and salad.
Am enjoying this thread - it keeps me company during the day. Lovely food ideas!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/10/2020 16:19

If it helps, I make coleslaw with shredded white cabbage and carrot, half an onion, teaspoon of English mustard, salt, squirt of lemon and mayonnaise.

20bloodypounds · 13/10/2020 16:23

@ShagMeRiggins I hate pork scratching thingies, can't even put them in my mouth. But try the Chicken Crackling I posted about upthread (it's also on the low carb products thread, as pere BIWI's request).

I bought it in a wee shop in the far North West of Scotland - if it made it that far it's bound to be everywhere, and you can get it on Amazon.

If you have a read of the FAQ I've posted today, there's a post on how to deal with carb flu.

Try not to give in and have the toast, as you're just delaying the transition to ketosis by doing that.

The salt is the critical thing - but also drink lots of water, eat plenty of fat and take some paracetamol! Don't suffer. You won't feel like this for very long.

Midlifemission · 13/10/2020 16:28

@Totalshambles this was me yesterday - I can't copy and paste BIWIs reply but yes it's the good old electrolytes - sodium, potassium and magnesium I think from memory. She recommended salt and things like salmon ,avocado and spinach.
Also an electrolyte drink which I will find a link too.
Good luck I felt fine after some salty bacon and a bit of not allowed carrot !

Hi @Superspecs

There is a recipe here (from the Bootcamp recipe threads):

Coleslaw

125g white cabbage (less than 1/4 of a cabbage)
75g carrot (1 medium-sized carrot)
25g shallot (1/2 a banana/echalion shallot)*

Slice white cabbage thinly
Grate carrot finely (don't use the largest holes on the grater)
Chop shallot finely

Add oil and wine vinegar - roughly 3 tablespoons oil and 1 tablespoon vinegar, and salt and black pepper. Stir everything well together. Leave for half an hour or so. Just before serving, stir in a tablespoon of mayo.

This will make 2 portions

*You may find that 25g is too much, so start off with 15g and see what you think!

Try to avoid pre-prepared ones as they vary hugely in terms of carb counts, and many of them contain sugar.

@52andblue you don't need to do anything! Just wait for @AthelstaneTheUnready to come along and she'll slot you into the spreadsheet list. (She probably needs to know what weight you want added to it though)

Here is a link to the FAQs thread

... because I cocked it up in my post earlier.

Have a read of these posts as there's stuff here you may want/need to know

The coleslaw recipe is somewhere on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness - might be in the Ubercamp tab.

But essentially (from memory) it's finely sliced cabbage, a finely grated small carrot (iirc, the finely grated is important, as it goes further), a finely sliced spring onion, a teaspoon of salt, a glug of apple or white wine vinegar, mix and leave for a bit before stirring in a generous squoosh or two of Low Carb Full Fat mayonnaise (I always just use the Lidl stuff which is lovely, but I believe that the de Louis mayonnaise is very good).

Didn't get round to making it yesterday - must do so today Smile

AthelstaneTheUnready · 13/10/2020 16:39

Ack, sorry @52andblue, I've added you but forgot to say... yes, tell me what weight you'd like entered and I'll do that (am a fellow internet interface numpty).

prettybird · 13/10/2020 16:40

My memory wasn't too bad for the recipe Wink - just got spring onion mixed up with shallot Grin

prettybird · 13/10/2020 16:41

....and I forgot the generous glug of olive oil Grin

I don't forget it when I'm making it though Wink
