Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!

Morning all

Very much looking forward to finding out how everyone has done so here's the Spreadsheet for its last outing

I had hoped, when I started this Bootcamp, that we would have left lockdown properly by now, rather than being in this weird kind of limbo that we find ourselves in. But hopefully it has achieved its objective, of getting us all a bit more focused and healthy, rather than just eating and drinking ourselves to death before the virus could do that!

We will, of course, carry on - I'll keep the thread going and when it's finished, we'll start another one. Just because the ten weeks is up doesn't mean that the diet has ended Grin

Here's to a good result on the scales this morning Flowers

Have just ordered the books BIWI. Going to look at the tray bakes one too (I love cookbooks - I’ve just given a load to charity too Blush ). Who does them?

Hopeislost · 07/08/2020 22:14

Just watched the MM programme. Those portobello pizzas looked great! Will be adding those to the meal plan for next week!

MrsKoala · 07/08/2020 22:33

They are on special at Lidl this week- I got 2 packs of 4 after watching the programme!

Tornfelt · 08/08/2020 00:40

Me too! Trying them tomorrow 🙂

1WildTeaParty · 08/08/2020 01:20

I like recipes from the fast800 recipe book... but wish I could like mushrooms ugh!

Takingontheworld · 08/08/2020 11:21

Hi all!

DH and I went out for Mexican last night, so I'd planned to just eat meat and veg type dishes but it turned out to be more south american tapas, it actually turned out to be really hard as it was suprisingly very vegetarian based so there were ALOT of bean dishes etc for example. They weren't huge dishes and DH and I were sharing, but I felt absolutely stuffed! I felt REALLY uncomfortable soon after and this morning a had quite sharp pains.

Is it possible I'm actually intolerant to carbs in certain forms and its only showing itself now they're not in my diet? I've been pondering this this morning.

We've been to the market early this morning and I've got a huge bulb of purple garlic, a big bush purple and green kale, which I'm genuinely excited to have later! And i bought a toasted garlic mayo (2.9 per 100 so wont go mad with it!) That I'm looking forward to with Salmon today. Have also got some extra thick cream and raspberries from market.

I had a couple of drinks last night and I'm right back on the water today.. about to head to the garden to sunbath whilst I've no kids to nag me and I'm reading real life money by the lady who started the myfrugalyear insta. Good read so far. Suspect my issue may be drunk purchases and expensive farmer market buys.... 😳

In other news, I'm firmly and comfortably in all my size 16s again. Excited for 14s but as i haven't been a 14 for many years, so will require new clothing, I'm excited to get back into some pretty things I already have. Wore a jumpsuit last night and im in nice bathing suits etc today.

devoncreamtea · 08/08/2020 11:35

Is the Fast800 principle, similar to the first week boot Camp this time then?

devoncreamtea · 08/08/2020 11:37

Awesome Taking Flowers
Enjoy your kale...Confused

BIWI · 08/08/2020 12:05

@devoncreamtea

Fast800 is 800 calories per day, and lowish carb. On top of that, there's fasting as well. For a max of 12 weeks. After the 12 weeks I think you move to 5:2 (can't remember the specifics).

So sort of like the first week of this Bootcamp, although much lower calorie, and allows different carbs, so legumes/pulses are allowed.

The fast 800 book has some lovely recipes. It’s interesting to see the reaction to his latest tv programme. So many people think he is promoting disordered eating.

Anyone else struggling to eat in the heat? It’s so hot here that I have no real appetite and definitely don’t want to cook!

devoncreamtea · 08/08/2020 14:16

Thanks BIWI i will have a look for the book - although my attempts at 16:8 have been pitiful...!

Oneborneverydecade · 08/08/2020 16:50

Hi all

I'm lurking in an anticipation of the next boot camp. I've lost 14lb over just over 2 weeks doing a combination of 8/16 and Keto.

My question is, and it seems to have been referenced higher up in the thread, are weeks 3/4 notorious for weight loss slowing down?

I should add that my 18yo niece has recently lost almost 4st (of 7) following Keto. I'm loving her dedication

MrsKoala · 08/08/2020 18:38

Went to Hastings for a lovely swim today and have picked up salmon for tonight, crab for tomorrow and smoked haddock for later in the week.

Was going thru some old recipes and found these. I thought the sticky short ribs looked promising as, usually sticky means honey or sugar, but this has none. So I shall give it a go. Never cooked with beef short ribs before, I assume I can swap for pork spare ribs or maybe belly slices. The other one I thought I could replace the beans with mushrooms and serve with celeriac or swede mash.

Nearly made myself sick chasing those upside down pics around my phone screen MrsK 🤣

MrsKoala · 08/08/2020 20:29

Ha, sorry @BrassicaBabe. I took them upright so no idea why they uploaded like that. Anyway I expect you know what beef short rib is like? Do I just ask for that at the butchers or is there another name for it I’d recognise more?

Mimosa1 · 08/08/2020 22:34

Welcome @Oneborneverydecade
You're right that weeks 3-4 can be slow going for some people but keep on it and the weight will come off. I don't know the science behind it, I'm afraid although other wise BCers may (it was explained to me last time I did bootcamp several years ago, but like you, I joined this one towards the end!).

DH has lost 5kg in the last few weeks and it's starting to be very noticeable. I'm fitting into most of my clothes again, which is nice but goal, or even a normal BMI, is months away still. Although time will go past anyway I suppose so may as well get in with it!!! Smile

I have my eye on a bright scarlet red sundress which I shall buy as a reward when I hit my next mini goal...

BIWI · 09/08/2020 09:54

@MrsKoala

Short ribs are also known as Jacobs Ladder. (I have no idea why!)

Waitrose sell them on their fresh meat counter, but I haven't seen them anywhere else - although if you have a proper butcher near you they might have them? That recipe sounds lovely - might give that a go as well.

Welcome @Oneborneverydecade!

Yes, it's definitely a thing. I talk about it every Bootcamp so that people are warned about it. (I have to confess that I, too, have forgotten the scientific reason for it, so just have to hope that @StuntNun will get the Bat Signal and will come along to explain Blush)

And well done to you and your niece! Flowers

StuntNun · 09/08/2020 10:35

I actually saw a great explanation for the week 3-4 stall the other day. When you first go low carb you lose fat plus the water that was bound up with the carbs stored in your liver glycogen. However you can't keep losing a pound of water a week so in weeks 3-4 your body starts retaining water again until balance is restored. So weight loss typically looks like this:

Wk 1 -3lb fat -1lb water so -4lb overall
Wk 2 -1lb fat -1lb water so -2lb overall
Wk 3 -1lb fat +1lb water so no loss
Wk 4 -1lb fat +1lb water so no loss
Wk 5 -1lb fat 0lb water so -1lb overall
Wk 6 -1lb fat 0lb water so -1lb overall

So at the end of six weeks you have lost 8lb fat but during weeks 3 and 4 it appeared that things weren't working because you were losing fat but gaining water so your overall weight wasn't changing.

MrsKoala · 09/08/2020 10:36

That’s great thanks @BIWI I’m lucky that we have a good butcher and a Waitrose on the high street here. It’s from a Waitrose slow cooking booklet I picked up a while back. It’s appealing to me because it can be done in the slow cooker and I use mine usually often, but not recently because of the warm weather. But I think with some steamed greens this will work in this weather and it means less time near a hot oven/hob.

Did this Salmon and broccoli tray bake last night but added sliced courgette and asparagus when I put in the salmon (also used one large bit of salmon for 2 hungry people). Had a steamed Multi greens ‘rice’ bag from Iceland with it. It was spicy and delicious. Didn’t eat till 9.30 tho as just too hot to feel like cooking.

MrsKoala · 09/08/2020 12:53

Got dressed crab for dinner today but other than a green lemony dressed salad and garlic mayo I can’t think of anything else to go with it. H will have crusty bread and jerseys. But I think I’ll need something more substantial. Any suggestions most welcome.

BIWI · 09/08/2020 13:35

Got any cauliflower? I'd make some cauliflower couscous/rice - dress it like couscous, i.e. with olive oil and finely chopped shallot and (a bit) of garlic, perhaps a touch of chilli? Maybe a chopped tomato as well.

Thank you @Mimosa1*@BIWI @stuntnun* it's good to know I'm not alone

Fortunately I don't feel hard done by (unlike with normal attempts at weight loss) so I know I will ride out these weeks

Mimosa1 · 09/08/2020 15:04

I'm tantalisingly close to a number starting with 75, but not quite! We're moving this week and packing (and chucking out) like mad. It's been tricky having a
Wardrobe clear out as I'm not sure what size I'm going to end up. For now I'm just happy clothes are fitting better.
