Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!

BIWI · 03/08/2020 07:19

Morning all

Very much looking forward to finding out how everyone has done so here's the Spreadsheet for its last outing

I had hoped, when I started this Bootcamp, that we would have left lockdown properly by now, rather than being in this weird kind of limbo that we find ourselves in. But hopefully it has achieved its objective, of getting us all a bit more focused and healthy, rather than just eating and drinking ourselves to death before the virus could do that!

We will, of course, carry on - I'll keep the thread going and when it's finished, we'll start another one. Just because the ten weeks is up doesn't mean that the diet has ended Grin

Here's to a good result on the scales this morning Flowers

Thanks @Ragwort, that sounds delicious, will try it now. Back in a bit @Mimosa1, although I cannot claim to be very wise!

StuntNun · 05/08/2020 20:06

Mimosa there are lots of different approaches to weight maintenance. It's common to pick a weight range that you're happy with and aim to stay within it. So if your ideal weight is 9st you might set an upper limit of, say, 9st 4lb. If your weight is below this then you follow your maintenance plan. If it hits 9st 4lb then it might be time to go back to Bootcamp or Bootcamp Light or reign things in another way.

Some ways to maintain are:

  1. Have one "off-piste" meal or day per week/fortnight/month. Not a licence to go mad in a carb feeding frenzy but an opportunity to mindfully enjoy higher carb foods that you miss.
  2. Add some healthy but carbier foods back in to your diet such as medium carb fruits, vegetables, potatoes, rice, one slice of bread per day, legumes... basically whatever you've been hankering for but that isn't going to cause the weight to pile on. And/or relax a little about e.g. flour in sauces and gravies, high meat content sausages etc.
  3. Follow the 90:10 rule where you stick to low carb most of the time but don't sweat the occasional dietary "excursion".

Personally I feel best when I stick to Bootcamp Light all the time although I don't worry about an occasional high carb food such as cake on one of my kids' birthdays. My DH is more metabolically healthy than me and is able to tolerate the occasional beer of sharp intake of breath bacon sandwich the sod without any ill effects. Bloody men, eh? Whereas I find upping my carb intake leads to increased hunger and carb cravings.

Mimosa1 · 05/08/2020 21:50

Thanks @StuntNun that's helpful. I know when I'm not weighing every day it's because I'm putting it on, so I think for me it starts with daily weigh ins...

Rshard · 06/08/2020 10:09

Bought the quick roasting tin cook book yesterday. Lots of lovely recipes that fit this woe, does anyone else have it? I’ve bookmarked loads to try but wondered if anyone had any recommendations?

Tornfelt · 06/08/2020 10:13

Well those chicken wings were delicious. Thanks @Ragwort!
@StuntNun has posted what I have been doing regarding maintenance, so I'm glad I'm on the right track! I was super strict and then went to bootcamp light towards the last couple of weeks. I actually got below my target weight, so have been allowing some carbs in occasionally, and staying in a weight range that I'm happy with. For instance I made a quiche for the family, and it turned out so well, that I had a good slice for tea the other night with flgv. It was yummy and made a change, so will likely go off piste occasionally like this, but in the main keeping the lchf way of eating!

Tornfelt · 06/08/2020 10:14

Did anyone watch the Michael Mosely programme last night?

BIWI · 06/08/2020 10:42

Yes I did! I'm a bit of a fan of his, so it's going to be very interesting to see how they all get on.

I did notice, though, that the participants have all been given one of the Fast800 protein/meal replacement shakes as well - although the pack was very carefully turned away from the camera, so you couldn't see the branding! I think it will probably turn out to be a not-so-obvious ad for the Fast800 diet.

Helpful worlds on maintenance. Thanks you Stunt

I'm with you Mimosa. I need to weigh everyday. When I stop weighing it's a sure sign I've got my head in the sand and I'm going off piste!

I haven't bought a new cookbook for an age. Will give that one a go I think Rshard

1WildTeaParty · 06/08/2020 13:39

On the Mosley CH4 programme - it would be most interesting if they come back after a year or so to check on the results long-term.

(As we know, short-term loss isn't of great value and isn't healthy.)

I guess (being Mosley) that there is an emphasis on low carb?

BIWI · 06/08/2020 13:45

If it's an ad by any other means, it will be a combination of low calorie, fasting and low carbing - probably described as Mediterranean eating. He'll also advocate stuff that eating for your gut biome - which is another of his books! (Not that I have a problem with that)

@Rshard which one have you got? Is it the yellow one?

MrsKoala · 06/08/2020 15:59

I’m also a big fan of his. I’m going to watch it on catch up tonight. Is it bbc?

I’ve noticed a lower carb trend in weight loss books recently. I thought the Tom Kerridge diet programme, despite being calorie focussed was Lower carb than a lot and the recipes had reduced their calorie count in the carbier foods (which makes sense considering his dopamine diet). The hairy dieters recipes also were less carby. And even Jamie Oliver’s super foods. But one thing they all are is low fat too. Which means you just aren’t kept full enough. I found I was still hungry and unsatisfied with the recipes.

Tornfelt · 06/08/2020 16:54

Was Channel 4 Mrs Koala.

Rshard · 06/08/2020 16:56

It’s the green book, it has a tray of salmon and broccoli on the front of it BIWI.

I was fancying a new cook book too brassica and a couple of people I follow on Instagram rave about this one.

BIWI · 06/08/2020 17:55

Ah. Sorry - we have the yellow one - but there are some fab recipes in there that are also very low carb friendly!

Hopeislost · 06/08/2020 18:30

@MrsKoala It's being repeated on 4seven at 1am.

Thanks for the heads up, I've just set up my Sky box to record!

I might buy that one too!
MrsKoala · 06/08/2020 19:02

Cheers, I’m going to watch it now on 4 catch up/iplayer/on demand thingy.

I’m alway up for a new cook book too so will have a look at the tray bake ones. Especially because I struggle with meals both H and I can eat.

Yay! Well done Taking 🙂

Going to watch the Micheal Moseley thing at some point hopefully!

MrsKoala · 07/08/2020 13:18

Well done Taking. You CAN do it. What weight is your long term goal?

I enjoyed the prog. I thought what was good was that they chose people not so obviously overweight. The kind of sizes that you may think, maybe a bit chubby but not obese. The stats were quite shocking. I also thought it was interesting that the people when asked to predict their waist size said the size jeans they wear. But not many men wear their jeans round their waist. So they were all way off. I also didn’t realise the extent of the link between weight and dementia.

I may get the fast 800 book.

Mimosa1 · 07/08/2020 13:58

Well done @Takingontheworld !

I haven't watched the MM programme yet, will see if I can get it on catch up. I hadn't realised there was a link between weight and dementia either.

Weight is continuing to come off here, happily. I'll be doing a "proper" weigh in on Mondays on the thread for my own accountability.

Chilango does a quite nice Keto Box (steak, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese) via Deliveroo for anyone who can't face cooking at the moment and is near a big city.

Rshard · 07/08/2020 17:15

Well done takingon!

The MM programme sounds interesting, will give it a watch

BIWI · 07/08/2020 18:12

The Fast 800 book is definitely worth a read - and the recipe book that goes with it is great. Some lovely recipes, and all easy to cook.
