Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!

BIWI · 03/08/2020 07:19

Morning all

Very much looking forward to finding out how everyone has done so here's the Spreadsheet for its last outing

I had hoped, when I started this Bootcamp, that we would have left lockdown properly by now, rather than being in this weird kind of limbo that we find ourselves in. But hopefully it has achieved its objective, of getting us all a bit more focused and healthy, rather than just eating and drinking ourselves to death before the virus could do that!

We will, of course, carry on - I'll keep the thread going and when it's finished, we'll start another one. Just because the ten weeks is up doesn't mean that the diet has ended Grin

Here's to a good result on the scales this morning Flowers

@itsmeagainagain

its always social situations which I struggle with as I hate drawing attention and people never seem to be able to accept you just saying oh I'm not having dessert really gets on my nerves. We've got friends round for takeaway tomorrow and although I've planned what I am happy with eating I just know that it will get commented on and then 'oh but you don't need to lose weight' blah blah. Am also planning just one glass of prosecco!!

Declining dessert is easy - you just simply say you're too full!

Great that you've planned your takeaway, but why do you think your friends will comment on it? I'm sure they won't notice - and even if they do, all you need to say is 'it's just what I fancy today'. No need to tell them it's because you're dieting.

But even still - why shouldn't you want to diet? It's none of anyone else's business. Generally I find the people who protest too much are those who themselves need to lose some weight - and by you doing something about it, you make them feel bad.

Your health and your weight is more important than what anyone else thinks. So get on with what you've planned and ignore them!

Thanks @BIWI Smile I worry too much about what other people think which is generally my undoing Hmm. I’m feeling really focused though ready for bootcamp Halo

Jdhshekr · 08/10/2020 11:10

@mimosa1 that is really interesting about insulin resistance around period time. Could explain a lot. And well done on reaching normal BMI range! I’m now at a BMI of 25.8 so a little way to go, but I feel so much better seeing 25 than 26.

Lost 2lbs this morning after a couple
of weeks of staying the same. 💪

BIWI · 08/10/2020 11:56

@Jdhshekr @Mimosa1 @StuntNun

I found this on Marksdailyapple.com:

Menstrual Cycle 101

Let’s briefly review what constitutes a normal, healthy menstrual cycle, understanding that everybody’s “normal” will be a little different. A typical cycle lasts from 21 to 24 days on the short end to 31 to 35 days on the long end, with 28 days being the median. Day 1 is the first day of your period and begins the follicular phase, which lasts until ovulation. Just before ovulation, levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), and estradiol (a form of estrogen) spike. Next comes the luteal phase covering the approximately 14 days from ovulation to menses. LH, FSH, and estradiol drop, while progesterone rises. Estradiol bumps up again in the middle of the luteal phase. If a fertilized egg is not implanted, menstruation commences, and the whole cycles starts over again. All this is regulated by a complex communication network under the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis, which is closely tied to the actions of the adrenal (the A in HPA axis) and thyroid glands

Across the cycle, fluctuations in body weight are common as fluid is retained and then released along with shifts in estrogen and progesterone. Changes in blood glucose are also normal, and insulin-dependent diabetics often find that they need to adjust their dose at different times of their cycles to keep their blood sugar in check. The most common pattern is higher blood glucose readings in the pre-menstrual period (the second half of the luteal phase), and lower readings after starting your period and before ovulation. This is generally attributed to the fact that progesterone, which is highest during the luteal phase, is known to reduce insulin sensitivity. However, different women experience different patterns, which can also be affected by other factors such as oral contraceptive use

Normal fluctuations in insulin resistance and blood glucose can mean that women get lower ketone readings at certain times of the month than others. When these occur premenstrually—and so they tend to coincide with a period of (transient) weight gain and food/carbohydrate cravings—women often feel as though they are doing something wrong. Rest assured that these variations reflect normal physiology

The many factors that affect your cycle and the levels of your sex hormones include: other hormones, gut health and microbiome, metabolic health (e.g., insulin sensitivity), environmental toxins, stress, sleep, immune health, nutrient deficiencies, activity level and energy expenditure, and age. Each affects the others, and all (except age of course) can be affected by diet. It’s no surprise, then, that it can be extremely difficult to pin down a root cause of menstrual changes or reproductive issues

I'm going to post some FAQ on the prep thread - if there are any that you think would be good to post, let me know!

TIA

OMG! This is a game-changer.

Stumbled across this site the other day, for low carb bread.

I bought a loaf and the large rolls - and today have had the most amazing lunch of a tuna mayo roll! Only 2.7g per roll and honestly, you would never know it's not 'normal' bread. Tastes like bread and has the same kind of texture.

MsAwesomeDragon · 09/10/2020 18:40

BIWI would that bread freeze do you think? I don't eat a lot of bread anyway, but it would be good to have some in the freezer for occasional use.

BIWI · 09/10/2020 18:48

On the label it says either to put it in the fridge or to freeze it.

I've kept the rolls in the fridge but have frozen the bread - hopefully it will be OK!

I tried the Beef Rendang recipe that BIWI recommended the other day and it is amazing. I could only find cheap beef skirt steak in the supermarket so I cooked it for 4 hours and it was beautifully tender. Next time I'll try it in the Instant Pot for a quicker meal. The recipe gives instructions for making the rendang sauce from scratch so you can avoid all the sugar in store-bought versions. We had it with cauli rice, stir-fried pak choi, and cucumber and mint raita. It's definitely a new favourite in the Stunt household.

BIWI · 10/10/2020 21:50

It's good, isn't it?!

OP posts:
BIWI · 10/10/2020 21:52

I make it with beef shin, which is not easy to find in the supermarket - you need to look for stewing beef (as opposed to braising steak). Sainsbury's do sell it, under their Taste The Difference brand, but it's not always available.

I made pate from scratch yesterday and it was a massive hit! I'd assumed it was going to be a faff and despite having the livers in the freezer for the whole of lockdown, I had put it off. I imagine there are more complicated/authentic recipes but this was spot on. Definitely a new staple. Might need some of BIWI's bread for it. Recipe was linked from the Organuary website www.theharcombedietclub.com/lifestyle/2013/03/homemade-pate/

Night out went horrifically wrong, got blinding drunk on shots and ended up on the neighbours couch. Walk of shame home this morning.

I won't face the scales for a week or so yet, just get back on it asap now

Feel like I'm dying.

Two paracetamol, lots of water and then a greasy fry up later - will see you right.

Takingontheworld · 11/10/2020 11:36

I'm chugging the water, got a pub roast later so I'll skip the potatoes as always and stock up on veg etc, then I'll do a big fast and focus on the water etc. Food shop straight after drop off tomorrow. Clean my act up for week 1 bootcamp!

I honestly cannot understand wtf happened. So out of character!

BIWI · 11/10/2020 11:43

Alcohol has more of an effect when you're low carbing. Perhaps I should have told you that sooner ... Grin

Takingontheworld · 11/10/2020 12:02

I feel absolutely vile. Am guessing its this WOE because the others were all fine!

BIWI · 11/10/2020 12:38

Yep. The lack of carbs will do that to you! If it's really bad, you could also try having a slice of wholemeal toast?

OP posts:
Takingontheworld · 11/10/2020 12:46

I'm on my 2nd hot shower, 3x750ml water and I've just had a small handful of nuts to prepare me for a bigger meal later at the pub... i think I'll be ok.

After feeling SO healthy I can't get over how disgusting my body feels.

However in other news i found a bunch of old jeans, some with tags, that never fit....... and now they do!

Oneborneverydecade · 11/10/2020 16:09

If anyone else is struggling watching The Great British Bake off may I recommend The American Barbecue Showdown on Netflix. It's carbelicious!

Oneborneverydecade · 11/10/2020 16:10

It's not carbelicious at all #facepalm It's 100% protein!

Takingontheworld · 15/10/2020 10:17

Feeling a bit overwhelmed on the new bootcamp thread 🤣 can't cope with busy rooms haha. Thought I'd check back here and see how you all arex

Don't worry @Takingontheworld - it slows down considerably after the first week. Lots of people sign up and then find it too difficult. Some flounce because they don't like being told off by me and some just seem to run out of steam/can't be bothered, etc.
