Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!

Morning all

Very much looking forward to finding out how everyone has done so here's the Spreadsheet for its last outing

I had hoped, when I started this Bootcamp, that we would have left lockdown properly by now, rather than being in this weird kind of limbo that we find ourselves in. But hopefully it has achieved its objective, of getting us all a bit more focused and healthy, rather than just eating and drinking ourselves to death before the virus could do that!

We will, of course, carry on - I'll keep the thread going and when it's finished, we'll start another one. Just because the ten weeks is up doesn't mean that the diet has ended Grin

Here's to a good result on the scales this morning Flowers

stuntnun I make it with full fat milk and cream and let it ferment for a week in the fridge until its looking separated
Then sieve out the grains and hang the kefir in a muslin bag over a bowl in a cool place overnight ( or longer) to drain.. I use the whey for marinading meat ( its good for chicken( and DH uses it in breadmakingb too ) .
This time though I added more cream after the fermentation but before draining .. A bit of salt and whatever herbs you like.. I eat it with salad, in smoked salmon or ham roll-ups. Or lettuce wraps.. DH says its good on bread..

Takingontheworld · 03/10/2020 08:51

Home today. Just need to stay on track and then I'll be home free with no carb disasters.

I've eaten alot of cheese and clotted cream so not expecting a loss but hoping and praying to have swerved any holiday weight gain. Will report in tomorrow morning!

StuntNun · 03/10/2020 17:22

I've tried that thanks Laska and instructed DH not to throw away any weird looking stuff he finds in a bowl in the fridge! Wink

Mimosa1 · 03/10/2020 18:34

8 years @BIWI ! He's a good egg. We ended up at a chain Italian though as the steak page was utterly packed and no social distancing at all

Lol @StuntNun warning her husband not to chuck anything suspicious!

Laska2Meryls · 03/10/2020 18:37

ooh ..hope it works stunt Nun

Takingontheworld · 04/10/2020 09:34

Ok so scales say 186 still, so no gain, phew! Weirdly I feel lighter though? So i realised when i saw a sts i was mildly surprised not to see a tiny loss.

Still. I am very pleased that i had no backlash from going from that strict 20:4 & 800ckals to pretty much doubling my ckal intake and no fasting at all. Phew!

Home now, so time to lay back off the cheese. Haha!

Laska2Meryls · 04/10/2020 14:12

Its a horrid rainy, cold, dull miserable day here here, fancied q treat...So, Baked organic free range chicken wings with fajita seasoning and parmesan cheese...
Just leaving this here... 😋😋

I'm coming to join you all of that's ok? I've signed up for the next bootcamp on that thread.

I'm not really doing this to lose weight, although that would be a nice bonus. I'm attempting to get better control of my blood sugar so I can take less diabetes medication. I've been eating relatively low carb for a couple of months, after a ridiculously carb heavy lockdown. I think I need some inspiration though, especially now it's not really salad weather any more.

Oneborneverydecade · 04/10/2020 14:54

The Diet Doctor website and app are a great source for low carb recipes @msawesomedragon

Though I'm still a bit confused about whether we can take their carb count at face value Confused

MsAwesomeDragon · 04/10/2020 15:25

Do we need to count carbs? I haven't been so far, I've just been trying not to eat carby food. If I should be counting carbs, what should I be aiming for?

BIWI · 04/10/2020 15:53

@MsAwesomeDragon Welcome!

No, we don't count carbs (or calories) on Bootcamp. Just follow the ten rules and you should be fine.

BIWI · 04/10/2020 15:55

If you scroll up the thread to my post on Sat 26-Sep-20 09:57:20 you'll find the rules listed there.

BIWI i need some clarification please. Stumbled across an old thread were you say something about the deduction of fibre being a american thing.

I was explicitly told to deduct fibre by my keto buddy who originally set me on this path, and so always have, aiming to keep my carbs at 20g net carbs, not total. (I sometimes go up to 30 when im a bit more lax)

Obviously its working for me either way so will attempt not to let my control freak side stress about your impending answer ....🤣

But could you help me understand more?

BIWI · 04/10/2020 17:29

It's all to do with American food labelling vs UK. Our labels show carbohydrate only, whereas American food products include the fibre content.

So that's when you need to look at the 'net carbs'. For UK products you just take the carb count that's given, with no need to subtract anything.

Takingontheworld · 04/10/2020 17:37

Right so atm, when i track on MFP, I'm looking at the carb tot up and deducting the fibre (rather than packet by packet)

So I've been doing this wrong the whole time!?

BIWI · 04/10/2020 17:45

Unless you're buying American food stuffs, you don't need to deduct the fibre.

I don't use MFP - found it too confusing! - so I'm not really sure what you mean. But no - don't deduct fibre!

OP posts:
BIWI · 04/10/2020 17:51

However, I'm a bit confused - I've just gone over to MFP and entered an imaginary day's worth of food, and it doesn't give me any counts for fibre - and also works out all the counts automatically, for calories, carbs, fat, protein, sodium and sugar. What are you doing that gives you the option to consider fibre?

BIWI · 04/10/2020 17:52

... and just as a reminder we don't count carbs on Bootcamp! Grin

Great! I didn't want to count carbs. 10 rules sounds much more doable, I'll go and look them up now. I'm attempting cauli rice tonight, with chicken curry, but I'm not keen on cauliflower so am anticipating it being yuk. What else do people use instead of rice? I've been eating curry without any rice/substitute, but it's a bit weird and there's too much sauce, so would like to find a low carb alternative to have with it.

BIWI · 04/10/2020 18:03

Cauliflower rice was a real revelation to me @MsAwesomeDragon! Like you, I'd been thinking it would taste awful - but it really doesn't.

Whatever you do though, don't buy the pre-packed packets branded Cauli Rice - they taste absolutely disgusting.

I either make my own - really easy, just chuck cauliflower florets in the food processor and whizz till the right size - or buy the fresh, ready made stuff from Sainsbury's. I've usually always got one of those in the freezer.

I often make fried 'rice' - fry chopped onion or shallots in coconut oil, chuck the cauli rice in and stir fry together - season with soy sauce. I sometimes make thin egg pancakes to shred into it as well.

When we have curry (every Friday night is takeaway night!) I just have the curry with a veggie side - you get used to it without the rice.

MsAwesomeDragon · 04/10/2020 18:13

Ok. I've read the rules now. I'll probably not be too incredibly strict with it til the bootcamp starts properly. But I'll make a start.

Thanks for the advice on cauliflower rice. I may need to invest in a food processor if we're going to be eating like this for a while (forever probably, because obviously I want to keep the diabetes under control). Dh is currently grating cauliflower, and I don't think I'm his favourite person right now 😂. He's the cook in our house, and he's very supportive, so he's bought a couple of low carb cookbooks, and he's going low carb for dinners too (he's still eating lots of carbs for lunch and snacks, but eating what I'm eating at dinner).

StuntNun · 04/10/2020 18:49

MsAwesome if you're not a cauliflower fan then the frozen cauli rice you can get in some supermarkets is better than making it from scratch as the flavour is much milder. Even my cauliflower-hating DH will eat it without complaint! If you really can't take cauliflower then I find finely shredded white cabbage works well as a side dish for curries. You can also buy low carb konjac rice made from some indigestible root vegetable but it makes me bloated because of all the insoluble fibre so I can't eat it.

MsAwesomeDragon · 04/10/2020 19:06

Thanks stuntnun. I can't find frozen cauli rice in Morrison's, and I'm not really bothered enough to go trailing round other supermarkets. I hate cabbage even more than I dislike cauliflower Blush. I'm quite fussy really, although I thought I eat most things now as an adult (I was a very fussy child)

Takingontheworld · 04/10/2020 19:14

I just look here and then mentally take away fibre from the carbs if that makes sense!

MsAwesomeDragon · 04/10/2020 19:19

Proper cauliflower rice is ok. I can cope with that. Have ordered a food processor so dh doesn't need to grate cauliflower every few days, lol. It can be his "Christmas present".
