Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!

Morning all

Very much looking forward to finding out how everyone has done so here's the Spreadsheet for its last outing

I had hoped, when I started this Bootcamp, that we would have left lockdown properly by now, rather than being in this weird kind of limbo that we find ourselves in. But hopefully it has achieved its objective, of getting us all a bit more focused and healthy, rather than just eating and drinking ourselves to death before the virus could do that!

We will, of course, carry on - I'll keep the thread going and when it's finished, we'll start another one. Just because the ten weeks is up doesn't mean that the diet has ended Grin

Here's to a good result on the scales this morning Flowers

Sorry - I misread that. But still a good rat4e of loss.

Are you cooking with salt as well? Sodium is a key electrolyte on this WOE, especially when you're drinking a lot of water.

I know it's only n=1 but I salt my food liberally and add electrolytes to my water yet when I had blood tests recently my sodium level was on the low side of the normal range. You definitely need more salt on this way of eating, partly because you're consuming fewer salt-added foods such as bread, partly because your kidneys flush electrolytes more efficiently when insulin levels are low. Remember our paleolithic ancestors would have drunk water from natural sources such as streams which contain dissolved minerals, and would have eaten meat that hadn't been drained of blood (which contains electrolytes) before butchering.

Hi everyone,
Really interesting discussion of holiday eating and planning for trips. I'm wondering what you advise the day after a chest day? I had a work dinner last night and while I thought I'd ordered well, my duck starter was crispy / floured and my fish was glazed in a horrible sweet honey / balsamic sauce. I was a guest at an important work do and didn't want to cause offended by sending it back, plus I was hungry, but it wasn't the best choice, then also had to drink a bunch of toasts. Annoyingly, I didn't especially enjoy any of it and want to make sure I'm thoughtful about what I eat / drink today.

BIWI · 30/09/2020 17:29

Sometimes you just have to suck it up @Mimosa1. But it's doubly painful when you don't enjoy it!

Drink lots of water, eat ultra low carb for the next day or so and, if you can, do some/more exercise.

Todays been a weird one. Stopped eating at at 4pm last night, got to the office at 7am booked in till 2pm as then we were leaving for holiday. Didn't eat anything as i was so engrossed until I suddenly realised I was freezing and shaking. Ran home and eat 2tbsp of peanut butter. Whacked the quickest thing I could find (tempura fish at 13g carbs) and threw kale and spinach in a wok.

We've just stopped off as kids were claiming starvation and everything was closed except the maccers 🙄 i ate 2 nuggets at 6g carbs and drank my water.

Just checked and I've barely scraped 600 ckals but am at my carb limit (28g, i try to aim for 20 or less but cap at 30 usually) was hoping not to have to go to a supermarket until tomorrow but I'm gonna need to go get some beef or something so I can up my calories and not be starving without screwing my ketosis.

Blah. Mimosa there is nothing worse than eating stuff cos you have to that you're not even enjoying!

Those calories don't count i reckon 🤣

Takingontheworld · 30/09/2020 17:54

oh and top of this, husband is still taking 4k (was 5 but he couldn't hack it) ckals and basically eating constantly. AND MOANING ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME.

He's driving me insane

Takingontheworld · 01/10/2020 10:26

Guys. I just bought size 14 jeans on a whim. Like stretchy ones like i usually wear (usually by NEXT 360) expecting them to be unbearable. BUT THEY FIT

BIWI · 01/10/2020 10:35

Hurrah! Brilliant to hear Flowers

Well done @Takingontheworld !

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 01/10/2020 12:27

Awesome job @Takingontheworld

Soon they'll be loose 😁

Takingontheworld · 01/10/2020 13:13

Might go try them on again just to make sure 🤣

They are super stretchy so taking with a pinch of salt but I know i wouldn't have got them over my thighs 4 months ago!

Diets gone a bit brie heavy and i had a few roses last night but been good so far today too.

Glad that new boot camp is starting.... I have been playing with fire all week carb wise , ( not sure why as I have been so good sticking to it since last boot camp, until before my holiday) .. This has to stop or I will be gaining weight again... DH is away for a week from this evening and so ill be here on my own... The fridge is bare atm.. . . so its an ideal time to reset.. ..

In other news, does anyone else here make their own kefir? .. I have been doing so for sone time and over the last few weeks have cracked making kefir cream cheese .. ( its yum )

Laska2Meryls · 02/10/2020 09:22

Latest effort.. it started as a lockdown thing.. .. ( ok yes I am a bit bonkers!! ). I'm going to put some chives in half of this later..

Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!
Takingontheworld · 02/10/2020 09:25

What (why?) is kefir? Mil has mentioned it before but I'm not sure what it is?

Wearing the new jeans today. I think when i tried them on yesterday i sort of panic tried them and threw them on and off as possible 🤣 put them on this morning and they're really comfortable and a bit roomy around the waist so I'm a happy bunny today.

It has motivated me not to say "sod it"! And eat all the things just because it's raining on holiday and I'm bored! Ckals were up to around 1500 yday but carbs were v low (So. Much. Brie) so hoping i can get home sunday to no weight gain if i can continue.

Looking forward to new bootcamp also. I'm half way through my weight loss now so would be great if i got another good chunk off in next bootcamp before Christmas

Laska2Meryls · 02/10/2020 09:34

Its fermented milk ( sounds horrible, but is good) .. you need a starter or 'grains' to make it.. but it has good probiotics and is pretty low carb as the process uses up most of the milk carbs .

Kefir

BIWI · 02/10/2020 09:45

But according to that link @Laska2Meryls, it's still pretty high in carbs, at 11g per 250ml?

OP posts:
Laska2Meryls · 02/10/2020 09:56

Yes it does BIWI.. but I think that there is a lot of differring thoughts about Kefir carbs and the effect on sugars and carbs in the process of cultured foods . Im not at all an expert but I have been adding cultured food s to low carb diet with no ill effects .. article on cultured food and carbs..
Michael Mosley recommended kefir for low carb. i think.. As with all of these things so much conflicting information..
Anyway the cream cheese ( which I make with full fat milk and cream is good!)

BIWI · 02/10/2020 10:12

I'm not doubting it's good - it sounds lovely! And there are lots of benefits with kefir too. Will have a read of that article now.

OP posts:
BIWI · 02/10/2020 10:14

Actually, having read it, I seem to remember someone posting something similar about natural yoghurt a while ago! So how do you make kefir? Where do you get the grains from?

OP posts:
Laska2Meryls · 02/10/2020 10:16

Also there seems to be differing opinions on residual carbs in other fermented foods like sauerkraut.. Again im not certain, but I have been eating that ( and other fermented veg ) ... and it doesn't seem to have affected my weight loss..

..

Laska2Meryls · 02/10/2020 10:18

I was given some grains by a friend. But you can buy dried starters online and 'grow' them. thats how she stated ..

Mimosa1 · 02/10/2020 10:56

Hi everyone,
I'm looking forward to proper BC too. I've put on weight this week but think (hope!) it's mostly tom related, and while I've had some less than ideal meals, at least I haven't thought "sod it" for the rest of the day week. Tonight is my DH's and my anniversary so we're going out to a new steak place locally. We haven't been on a "date" for ages so I'm quite excited!

BIWI · 02/10/2020 11:14

Happy anniversary! How many years?

Rayna37 · 02/10/2020 13:59

Think I might hop back in for bootcamp, got half a stone to shift that has been firmly in place for a few months and need the rules and accountability of bootcamp make any real difference.

At least there's fewer social and travel obstructions to navigate currently!

StuntNun · 02/10/2020 14:07

I make kefir too Laska from raw milk. It can't be that high in carbs BIWI as it's fermented milk and some of the lactose is broken down during the fermentation process so it must be lower carb than milk. As with homemade yogurt you can culture it for longer if you want it to be lower carb. I do a 24-hour first fermentation then a six-hour second fermentation and mine tastes pretty sour - but i like sour! I sometimes add a little vanilla powder and grated nutmeg for extra flavour. I have it for the vitamin K2 which is supposed to be good for your teeth, but kefir is also great for gut health. Laska how do you make it into cream cheese and then what do you eat it with?
