Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - last weigh-in!

BIWI · 03/08/2020 07:19

Morning all

Very much looking forward to finding out how everyone has done so here's the Spreadsheet for its last outing

I had hoped, when I started this Bootcamp, that we would have left lockdown properly by now, rather than being in this weird kind of limbo that we find ourselves in. But hopefully it has achieved its objective, of getting us all a bit more focused and healthy, rather than just eating and drinking ourselves to death before the virus could do that!

We will, of course, carry on - I'll keep the thread going and when it's finished, we'll start another one. Just because the ten weeks is up doesn't mean that the diet has ended Grin

Here's to a good result on the scales this morning Flowers

@StuntNun

Taking not true at all, exercise is perfectly fine on low carb. If you're doing any kind of endurance aerobic exercise such as running or cycling then you may experience a temporary drop in performance in up to the first three months while the fat adaption process happens. Running won't help you lose weight though, unless you're running 25 miles a week or more or you're a bloke. And in the short-term it can cause temporary weight gain if you have any muscle soreness as water retention occurs to cushion the damaged tissue.
Super helpful thanks guys. Due to work commitments running would have been scuppered next month onwards anyways so think I'll reassess in spring ?

Thanks again all. It feels terrible to say but it is a relief both emotionally and financially - for both of us. Dementia really is an absolutely fucking awful person stealing cunt. (Apologies for language if it offends).

As for the fruit discussion (one extreme to the other) - I also don’t have a particularly sweet tooth (although I know fruit contains sugar) but find it so hard to resist in the summer. I tend to eat seasonally and live in the garden of England and it feels criminal not to enjoy the bounty of local strawberries, cherries and Raspberries (plaxtol isn’t far so they really are the freshest). I also have huge blackberry bushes, fig trees and apple trees in the garden and a greenhouse with many varieties of tomatoes. And now we have Victoria plums and greengages too. So, I allow fruit when not strict bc as part of one meal a day, not as a snack (as per Michael Moseley’s advice) and then when the season is over don’t really eat it again till it all starts up in May/June. (Apart from Rhubaarb - because, well, it’s bloody gorgeous Grin )

Sorry to hear about your fil @MrsKoala My daughter works with residential dementia patients and it breaks her heart so I can only imagine how tough being family. Great about your op! I hope covid didnt affect procedures too much, I have an up coming op to look forward to aswell. No idea what to expect.

@Takingontheworld I heard excercise increases muscle mass which is heavier than fat, so although you lose fat your scales may increase a little.

I discovered this morning my scales tell lies and cannot be trusted! Weighed myself and nearly fell off to see 14st 10! In the throes of excitement, I accidentally nudged the scales 1 inch to the left while climbing back on to show DP who I dragged through insisting he witness it. And they read 15st 5 Confused I pushed them back to the right and sure enough 14st 10!!

Since my new weighing spot is now to the right I'm sticking with 14st 10 Grin

Up another lb this morn... was 190 Saturday AM but now 193!? I've been good as gold so i have no idea whats going on! Feel like I've been stuck at this fluctuation for a month now. I really enjoyed running but now i feel so confused about what to do!

20bloodypounds · 09/09/2020 08:44

Another here who can't resist free fruit - apples from the tree, brambles from the bushes. The difference is that they no longer go into pies and crumbles with sugar, but instead a small amount with cream and yogurt @mrskoala and of course rhubarb is a vegetable anyway.

Sausages for tea today I think.

BrassicaBabe · 09/09/2020 09:56

Keep running Taking whatever else is going on running won't make you fat. You got it!

Hopeislost · 09/09/2020 11:57

So sorry for your loss @MrsKoala Thanks

Another 1lb off for me this week. I'm not being super strict so am happy with that.

I don't find that exercise either speeds up or slows down my weight loss. It does make it fluctuate more. If your muscles are sore then you're likely holding some water. I can gain 2/3lbs after a heavy weights session but it goes after a day or two.

MrsKoala · 09/09/2020 12:16

Thanks hope :)

I had an awful night, didn’t sleep till 5am, was pacing and fretting, then woke at 7. The nursing home called at 9pm to say the coroner is treating fils death as unexplained ( Confused 82 year old man with advanced dementia dies shocker!) so have taken the body to investigate further. Which is unsettling as we just want to put the poor bloody man to rest.

I’m sore and swollen so just doing all the necessary calls from bed. Not very hungry so just had scrambled buttery eggs with spinach and mushrooms.

@StuntNun did you have your arthroscopy? How did it go? I hope all is okay with your jaw.

Mimosa1 · 09/09/2020 12:39

Hi everyone,

Sorry very to hear about your Fil @MrsKoala

@Takingontheworld I'm
Impressed you're running at all. I loathe it but did c25k during lockdown and I'm starting it again this afternoon with DH.

I've fallen badly off the wagon. Only 1kg on in the past 2 weeks but my guests left over a week ago! I find it so hard because once I start eating carbs I'm just so bloody hungry! So. I find that's posting here and making a public (albeit anonymous) commitment to you lovely lot is the thing that works for me!

I'd love to be under 73kg by the time BC proper starts. 3 kg should be doable in a month. Onwards.

BrassicaBabe · 09/09/2020 12:56

I've got a recipe somewhere for rhubarb and mackerel. I'll dig it out 🤔

StuntNun · 09/09/2020 13:01

Come on Mimosa back on the wagon with you. You know what to do. Get some lovely low carb meals planned and make sure you have plenty of low carb snacks available. Once you've been back on low carb for a day or two those carb cravings will disappear.

What a nuisance MrsK I hope it doesn't delay things too much. Thanks for asking about the arthroscopy - it seemed to go well but the joint was filled with steroids so I won't know the long-term effects until those wear off. In the meantime I am blessedly almost pain free relative to before. The only thing is my stitches haven't dissolved yet which is a PITA as they're annoying me.

It sounds to me like you need to stop daily weighing! Your weight will naturally fluctuate day-by-day, which does mean every now and then it will go up. There's also the possibility of water retention after exercise.

Have you taken any of your measurements? That's actually a much more accurate way to measure your progress.

Having said that, list out for me what you've been eating and drinking over the last 3-4 days and let's see if there's anything we can pinpoint that might be having an impact.

Waving! Hello all! I’m reading but not writing as trying to get used to being back in school with thousands of kids!!
Hope to rejoin you all next week. Flowers

1WildTeaParty · 09/09/2020 13:49

Sorry to hear this about your FIL Mrs K! (We had similar due to 83year old's heart-failure being coupled with a head-injury. This happened due to falling after the heart suddenly failed... but they had to check on the order of these things. It didn't take too long... but it was very upsetting at the time.)

BrassicaBabe · 09/09/2020 20:44

Sorry about FIL MrsK Thanks

I'm pretty much in the zone running wise. I'm managing 5k twice a week and a slow 10K once a week. In between maybe a bike ride once or twice for fun. It's odd how motivation comes and goes. The same as it does for eating. But motivation is good at the moment so I'm holding on!

Makes sod all difference on the scales though!

Turns out BIL is having a birthday get together Friday. The plan is for pizza and lemon drizzle cake apparently. Oh, and I'm off the alcohol for another stint at the moment. I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb aren't I! Any advice folks? I'm not in the mood to fall off the wagon for this. But there's nothing there I can/want to eat. And I can't have "just one slice". I don't work like that. Wonder if I can pack something to take with me without looking like a knob!

Mimosa1 · 09/09/2020 22:27

Survived day 1 back on the wagon - with a "run" (3x 5mn slow jog) into the bargain! Tomorrow will be much more manageable.

@BrassicaBabe how would you feel about not going? Possibly citing the new Covid restrictions? I know what you mean though, I'm not a "just one slice" person either. Alternatively, could you bring a lo-dough pizza or meatizza? I believe M&S food does one.

BrassicaBabe · 09/09/2020 22:34

Haha Mimosa you've tapped into my introvert tendencies. I'd love not to go GrinNice one on your run 👍

20bloodypounds · 09/09/2020 22:35

@BrassicaBabe I'd style it out. Take a home made meatzza (make sure you save yourself the first slice) and then lemon posset made with stevia / erythritol

When offered cake, tell them that sugar gives you extreme flatulence, and watch them back off quickly Grin

20bloodypounds · 09/09/2020 22:38

No running here, but a nice walk to the fitness centre and a leisurely swim. 10000 steps walked and 1km swum. Felt so good to move my body in a different way.

BuffyTheBuffetSlayer · 09/09/2020 23:57

Well done everyone on your running! I have a torn meniscus (awaiting the knee clinic to finally see patients again) so running is out for me just now. But I have been managing to do the T25 fitness dvd every day, sometimes twice. I have a gym membership, but lost my entry band Blush

Rshard · 10/09/2020 07:28

Ouch for the torn meniscus buffy, dh had his fixed last year. Are you hoping to have surgery?

I was going to recommend and meatzza also brassica but as mimosa said it might be called off now?

BrassicaBabe · 10/09/2020 10:59

Will have to google meatzza recipes. Tried to call my "local" (20 mile round trip) m and a to find out if they stock it. But everything is automated and no one answers an actual phone. Sometimes think folks are using COVID to take the piss! Hmm

BrassicaBabe · 10/09/2020 11:00

Family meet is Friday. New rules don't come in til Monday. Plus we're in the backend of nowhere with very little new infections around. Can't see it being cancelled.

20bloodypounds · 10/09/2020 14:02

Meatzza is great. Other people will wonder why they ever put mozzarella, tomato, mushroom, green peppef, pepperami etc on a doughy base when they could have it on oregano and olive infused meat.

But choose your toppings wisely. Please God not tuna and sweetcorn or hawaiian ham and pineapple
