Leaving Lockdown Low Carb Bootcamp - our last week!

BIWI · 27/07/2020 08:18

It's odd, thinking back to when Bootcamp first started, how different things were. 9/10 weeks doesn't seem like it's a very long time, but it seems a very long time ago since we began, and we were in a very different place - with Covid-19 - to where we are now.

It is all feeling much more optimistic. Hopefully things will continue in this positive vein, and we can all get back to some kind of normality - or whatever is going to pass for normal now.

I hope very much that this Bootcamp has done what it set out to, i.e. to refocus us all and get back into the swing of a healthier way of eating, a healthier mindset and ways of caring for ourselves.

Flowers

Anyway, here's the spreadsheet

Next Monday will be the final weigh-in, so I hope that this last week is a successful one for us all.

Lovely to hear that people are keeping this up post BC - huge thanks @BIWI for organising. I'm another who signed up for the October one but just wasn't int he right headspace then and quit early but I'm determined to see this through.

Back up 100g today but 1.6kg off for the week.

Tacos / lettuce cups for dinner tonight, it's one of my favourite BC meals and the kids love having the tortillas but I find I don't miss them.

Afternoon strangers!

I'm back from a glorious two-week work trip to Pembrokeshire. Only week 8 for me, but I've managed to koko throughout that time and am back in the size 10s (albeit it's not a pretty sight with the muffin and the toe Wink).

One particular highlight was a fish restaurant in Dale right on the coast. Gravadlax to start (which isn't fish eggs, appaz, but rather some very salty cured raw fish) followed by cod loin with asparagus, samphire and a creamy buttery sauce. I ignored both the bread with the starter and the zinc bucket of chips with the main.

Find of the week was Wilkins & Sons Truffle Mayonnaise which I bought in Tesco ate most evenings with lots of celery.

Easiest meal was fatty burgers done in the oven with a load of button mushrooms and some grated swiss cheese at the end (and salad leaves on the side).

No wifi, no tele, no social occasions, about 7 lbs down in the week.

You've all done incredibly well!!

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 27/07/2020 13:57

My rollercoaster is at least back downwards this week. I hit 9 st 3 this week but today was 9 st 5 so I logged that.

I'm still a bit scared about how long term that woe works for vegetarians. I don't think it's sustainable long term if we continue to emerge from lockdown into eating out etc. It's just too complicated and hard to stick to. After my long weekend away led to a 5 lb gain I'm dreading to think where I'll be after 3 weeks in tally next month!

Any tips from anyone on the post boot camp return to 'normality' would be much appreciated.

ealingwestmum · 27/07/2020 13:59

We also have a surreal clothes swap going on. I am being passed down her urban outfitters baggy jeans (if I could only get the demon out of my head saying mutton dressed up as lamb now?) and she is trading up to couldn’t be bothered to take to tailor to turn up Joseph trousers. Lots of them, impeccably kept over the years. I am not sure what I am mourning the most to be honest...old world or new bod where 80% of wardrobe no longer fits!

SparklesAllOver · 27/07/2020 14:40

Well done all, sounds like everyone has had huge success! I have lost 1.6lbs this week so around another 10lbs to get back to my old normal weight. I have decided that I will continue with this WOE until I have lost those lbs but may relax it very occasionally once in a while.

devoncreamtea · 27/07/2020 15:09

Hi guys! I’ve had a mad week of canoeing in the Wye Valley and food sharing. Did well on carb avoidance - some beans and roots in curries and things that others had made for all of us. Lots of wine though!
Now at mums for a few days - has hoped to weigh in but she’s chucked her scales out!! Nevermind. Going by clothes I reckon a small gain or sts.

I’ll carry on over summer I think and will do a few weeks more strictly BC when I get back. Enjoying feeling a bit more in control. Flowers for everyone today. Good work sticking to things through this weird time and for choosing to value yourself and make the effort to change something that has made you unhappy or bothered you. You’re all ace!

The key thing is to decide what 'normality' is/means for you!!!

If you just go back to your eating patterns pre-Bootcamp, then chances are you'll just regain the weight. So you need to work out what level of carbohydrate you can tolerate on a daily basis. Unfortunately there's no one fast, hard rule here - everybody is different.

The trick is to gradually increase your carbs, and to measure at what point you stop losing/start to gain.

If you can continue to combine IF with a lower carb WOE this should also help you to maintain.

One thing to note, though - if you seemingly overnight have put on 5lbs from one meal/day, this isn't going to be fat. You will have refilled your glycogen stores - which means you've got a lot of extra energy in your muscles and liver. So do some vigorous exercise, and also cut right back on the carbs for the next day or so.

I was going to suggest a Google search on “Hindis with celiac disease” but thought it might sound insensitive and a bit too flip. Blush

My 2lb loss has 2lb gained so I’ve STS. Utterly fine with that. Clearly this was my Bootcamp of deep lurking and enjoying the conversations.

Y’all are fab. Flowers

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 27/07/2020 17:38

Thanks @BIWI I think normality is eating a balanced diet that I don't gain weight.

IF will stick for sure but how do I get to a stage where I can have the occasional ice cream or a fruit salad and eat out as a veggie in most places without being the person always saying I 'can't eat' somewhere. I don't want low carbing to rule my life after I've hit my target weight.

Maybe I need to go to more calorie counting and just lchf for a couple of weeks if I see a gain?

PseudoBadger · 27/07/2020 17:41

I've been KOKO but not engaging with the thread or spreadsheet, sorry! 15lb loss so far, my best BC yet - thank you so much @BIWI

BIWI · 27/07/2020 17:53

@ThinkAboutItTomorrow

Thanks *@BIWI* I think normality is eating a balanced diet that I don't gain weight.

IF will stick for sure but how do I get to a stage where I can have the occasional ice cream or a fruit salad and eat out as a veggie in most places without being the person always saying I 'can't eat' somewhere. I don't want low carbing to rule my life after I've hit my target weight.

What do you mean by 'balanced' though? With LCHF we're talking about an appropriate balance of macronutrients, so high fat/medium protein/low carb. That should always apply.

That doesn't mean, of course, that you can't have the occasional ice-cream or fruit salad! You just can't have that at every meal/every day.

What is it that you fear you're no longer going to be able to eat? Why do you feel that it's too difficult? I'd actually argue that it's the being vegetarian that makes life more difficult than the low carbing!!! Grin

Unfortunately, the way you eat will need to rule your life after you've hit your target weight, otherwise you'll soon find that you're no longer at your target weight. Sorry if that sounds flip or harsh, but think about it - the way you were eating before is what led to the weight gain. You can't go back to that WOE and expect to not re-gain the weight, so you'll have to make some changes in the longer term.

Why think about calorie counting? It's not the calories that make you gain, it's the carbs.

OP posts:
ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 27/07/2020 18:33

It's the all or nothing part that feels hard to manage. At least calorie counting vaguely means you can have an ice cream and then make a healthy choice elsewhere and balance it out.

If I slip on low carb it means starting again. Or worse if I slip then the high fat content of the rest of the way of eating means I'm eating loads of calories and will gain faster.

Ninkanink · 27/07/2020 18:38

Hi everyone! Thank you for the new thread @BIWI. 🌷

I forgot to weigh this morning so I’ll have to do so tomorrow. I think I’ll have gained a little bit, but I’m okay with that.

KOKO everyone and good luck with this last week!

venusandmars · 27/07/2020 18:53

Someone asked about updating the spreadsheet... On previous bootcamps I have always done it. However this time, I am just not in the zone :(

I lose and I gain, I lose and I gain. I know why (mostly), but even on a couple of weeks when I am totally bc focussed, I don't lose much. I start to obsess. a bit like wanting to come top of the class. So I've decided to step away from the spread sheet until next bootcamp.

I've found the last 4 months really challenging, and I've resorted to my habitual comforts of eating and drinking. It's not helped by dh working from home and stuffing the cupboards with biscuits, or making toast several times a day (and the lovely toasty smell that goes with it), or buying huge family bags of crisps. And now that we're easing out of that phase, I am over indulging in the pleasures of good restaurants...

I also feel as though my metabolism has slowed down. I had a really strict week of 800-1000 cals, I/F and bootcamp and I lost 0.25 of a pound... I hate exercise with a passion so I'm not really sure what I'm going to do.

I've got birthday celebrations this week and over the weekend, then I'm going to take a long hard look at what I do / eat / drink / how much I move around / portion size.

I will get back in the zone.

Ninkanink · 27/07/2020 18:59

I don’t get on with the spreadsheet, I can never update it and a few bootcamps ago I got fed up with constantly having to request others to update on my behalf, so I just post the week’s loss and my cumulative loss on the thread every week instead.

8Track · 27/07/2020 19:52

Ugh. Feeling achey and rotten. Have a big glass of soda water and some paracetamol - might skip dinner tonight though.

My fathead rolls with soup were delish though, a lovely treat.

NoraEphronsneck · 27/07/2020 21:37

I've stayed the same for the third week running. Had two G&Ts on Friday night so I guess that won't have helped.

Haven't added my weight today as can't access google on my phone so will do it on laptop tomorrow

Takingontheworld · 27/07/2020 21:40

Well done @nowlook

@ThinkAboutItTomorrow weirdly, i thought this too. No such thing as a cheat day that i could easily rectify and still make a loss like previous diets.
I will almost certainly lose a whole week to getting it back off... but on other occasions, it hasn't seemed to affect it at all. Its very very strange.... i am yet to work out what i get away with..

FizzyPink · 27/07/2020 21:43

Slightly late to join the new thread after feeling absolutely horrific today after too much prosecco and too little food yesterday. I completely forgot how much low carbing reduces my alcohol tolerance, won’t be making that mistake again! Gave in and ordered an Indian for dinner but only had chicken tikka and salad so nothing carby.

Really pleased with this weeks loss although it’s only my second full week. I’m also not convinced my scales are working properly as they gave me two different readings yesterday with a 5lb difference. But I’m definitely losing, I can see the lack of bloat I normally have going on really easily. Hope everyone else has had a good Monday Smile

cad186 · 27/07/2020 23:17

Down to 9st 1 today, hoping to get to 9st by the end of bootcamp so nearly there! As I'm so close to my goal weight it is taking longer to lose but fingers crossed I'll be at target by next week. I'm reading The Obesity Code by Jason Fung at the moment, very interesting reading, has anyone else read it? Also ordered The Art and Science of Low Carb Performance too so that is next on my list.

BIWI · 27/07/2020 23:19

Yep - both great books, although the former is a bit of an easier read than the latter!

1WildTeaParty · 27/07/2020 23:36

Logging in with you all but I am maintaining (due to following bootcamp lite) rather than losing. I'd like to lose the final lbs but this seems to be too hard just now. Your amazing losses are inspiring me though - well done!

Rshard · 28/07/2020 07:11

Morning all

First early swim Since lockdown began for dd so up and out this morning but I’ve also done a 5k run, a load of washing and am now logging into work. I’ll obviously need a nap this afternoon but a productive day so far!

Mimosa1 · 28/07/2020 08:21

Wow @Rshard what a morning so far! I'm bouncing up and down 78kg, 78.1kg etc.
and am now desperate to see a number starting with 77! It's the beginning of the dreaded week 3 for me so I'm not expecting miracles and will koko. Good luck to everyone for whom this is the final week!

AWryGiraffe · 28/07/2020 09:02

Weighed in at 79.5 this morning (from 81kg) , hoping for a good week in numbers! Meal plan done, delivery booked, just need to attempt to fit in some exercise! Good luck everyone.
