Final Week of Low Carb Bootcamp ... or is it?!

BIWI · 22/06/2020 06:53

Morning all!

Spreadsheet is here

This was, initially, supposed to be the last week of a 'short, sharp shock' Bootcamp. However, I know that many of us have really got the bit between our teeth and it seems too soon to stop!

The very lovely Guardian of the Spreadsheet @AthelstaneTheUnready already took the precaution of adding a few extra weeks to the spreadsheet, so at the moment we're all set to go up until w/c 20 July.

If, though, you only signed up for 5 weeks and feel like you're being lured into a false promise, obviously you can still have this as your final week Grin

Whatever you decide - welcome to week 5.

Hopefully the doldrums of weeks 3 & 4 will have passed, and the scales will start to move again.

Remember to KOKO - put down all those slices of cake and cheesecake - and stay focused on cutting the carbs. Don't forget to keep your fat intake high, and keep an eye on the things we've introduced in Bootcamp Light.

Good luck Flowers

Sounds amazing @Burnshesmurfs - have you already got a psychology degree or did you have to do the conversion? Well done! We need more Ed psychs - the waiting lists are massive!

devoncreamtea · 24/06/2020 07:00

In other - more selfish - news... 159 has been seen! I am unreasonably excited by this 😬😳

Takingontheworld · 24/06/2020 07:24

I just made it into the 14s! My 0.5lb 😂 but thats a stone for me since 19th may.

Realllly cannot wait to see the 13s.

devoncreamtea · 24/06/2020 07:27

Yay! Takingontheworld 🙂

And prettybird forgot to say yesterday - congratulations on your target smashing! Flowers

Laska2Meryls · 24/06/2020 07:37

Pound off , pound back onHmm.. the scales hate me! Have stuck to it and definitely losing and happily around the bust/ back as summer dresses that didnt fit do now !
I will find it hard to do the water today as driving a long distance cross country and back and really won't have much loo access .. but will do my best .. food I have sorted..

filthyanimal · 24/06/2020 07:41

Hi everyone!
I'm a long term low-carber, been going since summer last year and have lost almost 5 stone. I've still got about 5 stone to go, so still very overweight.
Just wanted a bit of advice. I'm happy and settled with the way of eating, but my weight loss is SO SLOW now. I try and aim to lose 7lb a month which I was achieving to start with, but I'm not managing to do that any more.
I'm more active than I was, and I don't think what I'm eating has massively changed.
Do you think I'm perhaps just expecting too much of myself?
I weigh every day and do find that if I eat more nuts, especially peanut butter, the scales are less than kind the next day. Any suggestions for a replacement of something like peanut butter, which I have a quick spoonful of when I'm feeling peckish but it's not dinner time yet?
Thank you!!

devoncreamtea · 24/06/2020 07:58

Wow! filthyanimal well done on your weight loss! Flowers

If you think pb is slowing you perhaps challenge yourself to stop it for a month/week? Some people report dairy is an issue for them.
In terms of replacement - I don’t know?! Salami?!?

devoncreamtea · 24/06/2020 07:59

Tap of Coconut oil mixed with cocoa - someone suggested this to me once but never tried it!

devoncreamtea · 24/06/2020 08:00

Teaspoon not tap!!

TenCornMaidens · 24/06/2020 08:08

@filthyanimal I have found Dr Boz on YouTube to be very very helpful in explaining different phases of adopting a keto diet. She describes phases like yours and what to do about it. Maybe worth a look.

Freetodowhatiwant · 24/06/2020 08:15

Well done on getting down to that next level @Takingontheworld and @devoncream tea Such a great feeling! I have seen a lower figure every day so far this week but am a bit nervous about Friday as I am staying over at a friends house, seeing my best friend for the first time during lockdown, so there will be drink. I will try to stick to good food though. 63.2kg here for me today. It would be great to see 62 something for when I go away (hopefully) in two weeks.

Wow filthyanimal that's amazing weight loss. Someone wiser will be able to tell you more I am sure but it could be that it's because you have less to lose now it slows down...? You've done amazingly so far. What a shame that even a spoon of peanut butter slows things down though. That's very frustrating. Are you trying any fasting as well? I am doing 16:8 along with LCHF and finding this is working. I did 16:8 in the run up to last summer too and lost every day. I was doing quite low carb at that point but not LCHF. I think although this LCHF works the 16:8 with lowish carb was actually more forgiving as it probably just worked out as a low calorie diet. I DID put on 6kg which was Christmas followed by lockdown so I guess I didn't strictly maintain it. Before I had my kids though I did manage to maintain my lowest weight for a couple of years and that was by sticking to 1200 ish a day and avoiding all processed and white carbs but including a bit of fruit, lots of veg and plenty of fish.

One of my go-to sweet snacks for the last few weeks has been greek yoghurt with cinnamon.

Talking of snacks I have always been a user of protein bars but yesterday actually looked at the ingredients of my favourite Bounce ball (peanut butter) and it had all sorts of unhelpful things in it. In usual times I DO find they help me when I am losing weight but at those times I am also going to the gym and lifting heavy weights. I find they replace the desire to have something naughtier like a piece of cake or something when going for coffee. But they sure as anything don't fit LCHF so I will definitely be avoiding them!
Laska is it weird that I am envious of your long distance drive. I don't have my own car (in normal times I don't need one, living in London) and have barely been out of my London borough all lockdown. I SO WANT TO GET OUTTA HERE. It's beautiful where I am and I have managed two trips to the seaside (when DH has the day off, he has a work car) but I am so bored of these glorious London parks and the river. I really have the urge to travel further even if that's just into the city to Soho, Covent Garden, a walk along the South Bank...Aghh I remember it well.

Two weeks today I am hopefully going abroad but that brings up its own emotional issues as that will be the end of my 20 years of living with DH.

Well done for all the studying and busyness going on! Yes there is definitely something quite satisfying about completing a dissertation.

I've just had a black coffee for breakfast and will wait until lunch to eat. Will try to have a bigger lunch this time to try not to feel empty in the six hours between lunch and dinner!

prettybird · 24/06/2020 08:23

filtyanimal - maybe you're have set your monthly target a bit high: you've made brilliant progress to have lost 5stone already ThanksStar - but a realistic rate of loss on this WoE is only 1-2lb a month Confused

So maybe change your target to 4lb/month and then rejoice those months it's higher than that Smile But also don't get disheartened those months it's lower than that. Weight loss is rarely linear. Sometimes your body "sticks" to a certain weight - although you may well be still losing inches - while it adjusts to that, before resuming the downwards trajectory.

ShagMeRiggins · 24/06/2020 08:54

prettybird did you mean 1-2 pounds a week? Because that’s my understanding of an realistic expectation.

And hi everyone. I’ve had zero time to chat here and I miss it!

Rshard · 24/06/2020 09:02

That’s fantastic bunshersmurfs, you sound so determined and excited - best of luck. I am currently using a method called the research onion to shape my research but it’s not very low carb is it!?

Congrats devoncreamtea and takingontheworld, so good to hit those mini goals.

prettybird · 24/06/2020 09:14

ShagmeRiggins - yes, I meant 1-2lb/week Blush

But 7lb/month is at the upper end of that expectation and doesn't allow for stalls. 4lb is much more realistic Smile

Randomfatty · 24/06/2020 10:05

morning - I've been having some serious hot flushes in the middle of the night - I've noticed these seem to coincide with when the scales move - anyway - I'm happy moved another 0.5kg! although think I was over enthusiastic with the exercise yesterday, as I did a heavy weights class and then some sprint runs! feeling it today! Sad Sad
have an exam later today so will be having a big lunch to get me through!
lunch - mushroom and ham omelette with salad
dinner - baked cod with salad
may have some strawberries with lunch as well!

In usual times isn't Bootcamp, though, is it?! If you're following Bootcamp, eating low carb and high fat, with medium protein, you honestly won't need these when you're training.

If you're in any doubt that this WOE works when training, I seriously recommend that you read 'The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance' by Drs Phinny & Volek. They have been doing their own research into how endurance athletes can perform while following a low carb diet - really worth reading.

And, quite apart from this, anything as heavily processed as Bounce is not recommended on Bootcamp.

Sorry to hear about your separation. After 20 years that must be tough Flowers

Hi @filthyanimal and welcome to Bootcamp!

With 5 stones to lose, I don't think 7lbs a month is an unreasonable target.

Can you give us an idea of what you eat - perhaps list the last 3 or 4 days' worth of menus, so we can see if there's anything we can help with?

Just one thing does jump out at me though - if you're feeling peckish between meals this would suggest that you're not eating enough fat (and/or protein).

And how are you doing on the water front?

Euggh, feeling fed up. AF is due any day and I have the worst PMT, really anxious, stressed and pretty much unable to cope with anything. I feel like I want to run away or curl up under the duvet and wait for it to pass.

It's not helped by the fact that work is busier than ever, DS is struggling with home schooling and DH is constantly plugged into a video call so little to no help at all. I'm fed up of cooking, I'm fed up of trying to keep on top of the housework and I'm fed up of trying to hold it all together.

Ended up drinking wine last night, which of course did nothing to help - slept badly, no movement on the scales and a fuzzy head and raging hunger.

I absolutely agree and only mentioned it because there are so many new joiners I wouldn’t want them to feel “why bother?” Grin

Because, as I have rather inelegantlybstated before, sometimes I can “lose” a pound or two with a really good poo! (Sorry!)

filthyanimal · 24/06/2020 11:20

Thanks everyone! I started my low carb journey on bootcamp, and have dipped in and out of bootcamp over the years.
I'm very dull with what I eat.
Breakfast is always 2 eggs with butter.
Lunch is yoghurt with walnuts.
Dinner is meat of some sort with green veg or salad.
Tbh my veg intake could definitely improve. I have been drinking more wine during lockdown but made a concerted effort to reduce this in the last few weeks.
I drink lots of tea and coffee with FF milk. Probably not enough water, maybe 1 litre a day?
I run 3x a week.
This regime has worked for me so far. I enjoy my food and had been losing pretty steadily. Open to fresh ideas though!

Sounds amazing *@Burnshesmurfs* - have you already got a psychology degree or did you have to do the conversion? Well done! We need more Ed psychs - the waiting lists are massive!
I did the psych conversion distance learning- fortunately wasn't too expensive! I'll aim to do you all proud when I finally qualify- the funding for places is up a bit this year, so there will be more of us around! In other news, a friend just posted me this article: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/53-steps-to-help-lose-weight-from-ditching-the-pasta-to-standing-while-you-watch-tv-0jdkzq3h0, which is awful in some sections (6-8 nuts will fill you up? Really? Not to mention the joyless existence proposed by low fat, low carb plus fasting Shock). The daily weighing sounds interesting, though, so thought I'd pass it on.

Why are you doing it all? Why is it your job to hold it together?! Get your DH off the phone/computer and talk to him about jobs that need to be done.
