Low Carb Bootcamp Ordinaire - Week 3

BIWI · 08/06/2020 07:15

Morning all!

The start of a brand new week. Hopefully it will be a better week - emotionally/psychologically - for us all.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to record your progress.

Hopefully we've all had a good couple of weeks, food and weight wise.

Be warned that we're now in week 3. Many, many, many low carbers (not just Bootcampers) find that the weight loss can slow or stop in this week (and also week 4)

If this happens to you DON'T PANIC! If you've been losing so far, then you know it works. Just KOKO (keep on keeping on) and things will get going again soon.

Good luck to us all [ flowers]

Any reason those cold infusion tea bags could make me feel bloated?!

The cherry tea bags bloat me right up. It's a FODMAP/stone fruit thing.

1WildTeaParty · 11/06/2020 23:07

@NigellaAwesome yes, I know that they have stopped making Buttermint tea - I wrote to Twinings about it. (Apparently there isn't the demand!)

I didn't know that there was a Buttermint tea tribe out there; Twinings were very polite but made me feel alone with my strange tastes :)

1WildTeaParty · 11/06/2020 23:08

Buttermint tea certainly doesn't cause bloating or any other nasty symptom!

ShagMeRiggins · 11/06/2020 23:26

If you're lucky, @ShagMeRiggins might even offer to run another Style & Beauty zoom!

It’s funny you say that, BIWI, I have a Sunday thing (free) happening and was going to PM you to ask permission to mention here.

For those who don’t know, I run a business to do with consulting on colour, style, makeup, accessories, etc, but don’t want to taint Mumsnet or this wonderful board by flogging my wares.

I am, however, doing some tasters about a variety of things, so if anyone is interested please do PM me.

And this is all free and all in support of Bootcamp to give back as much as I can for everyone who is a work in progress. Big smoochy shit to all y’all.

NumbsMet · 11/06/2020 23:55

Okay, so my NSV was today at Sainsbury's. I saw a dress that I really liked. I looked at it in a size 14, because I always consider 14 downwards to be more flattering. Normally, since having the babies, I would be looking at that size wistfully, dreaming of the chance that I could lose enough weight to fit it.

Today, I looked at it and I wasn't dreaming, I was planning. My mind was telling me it was only a matter of time before I could fit it. That felt amazing Smile

moleeye · 12/06/2020 05:59

Morning all, I know it's week 3 and weight loss isn't linear etc, but my scales are showing a 2.5lb gain 😠. I've come on my period this morning so I'm hoping that's it.

Apart from the rather large amount of double cream on Monday I haven't overindulged on dairy at all. And I've been strict with my food (no cheating at all on BC for a change) and even upped my water to 4.5L a day the last two weeks.

Maybe I need to up my exercise and get moving more....my sleep has been atrocious this week thanks in part to a teething 14 month old, so I think that may also be partly to do with it.

I'm a complete idiot and started the week 4 chat thread too early - I start a new project today and convinced myself it was Monday Blush. So I've asked MNHQ to delete it. I'll c+p the posts that were made on the other thread here:

@kakiqueen

To pick up on your post on the last thread - have you had a look at the recipe threads, sticked in the Bootcamp topic? There's loads of stuff to inspire you there - you really shouldn't be sick of your food!

I hope that you're feeling better today.

re the vitamins, if I were you, I'd start taking Berocca - it's a vitamin B complex, and could help you. Yes, it has sweeteners in it, but that's much less important than sorting your sore tongue out.

symtpoms of vitamin b12 deficiency here

If your sore tongue is caused by a deficiency, it's really important that you see your GP. (Especially as some randomers on the internet really shouldn't be trying to diagnose you!)

@Sami89

More information here about the week 3 & 4 slow down from @StuntNun:

It’s because the water balance of the body changes when you first go low carb. Insulin causes the kidneys to retain water so switching to a low insulin diet means more water is flushed from the body, hence weeing more and needing extra salt/electrolytes. Around weeks 3 and 4 the levels of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) increase to reduce the amount of water lost and this causes a temporary water retention which masks the weight loss due to fat loss. So you’re still burning fat in weeks 3 and 4 but the scales aren’t dropping due to the water retention. Once your body finds a new hormonal balance taking into account the now lowered levels of insulin the ADH level drops again and weight loss starts to show on the scales.

Sorry to hear that - it could be a combination of all of those things, I'm afraid! But poor sleep definitely won't help. It raises the level of the stress hormone cortisol, which can impede weight loss.

Just KOKO and things will get going again.

Morning campers!
Thanks for the info on wk 3/4 BIWI that’s really helpful to know.
I’ve gone up by a pound this morning - I feel a bit bloated too. Water wasn’t brilliant yesterday (or the day before) and I still feel dehydrated so I think I need to concentrate on water today.
B scrambled egg, avo, bacon
L pastrami, Gouda, gherkin rollups salad leaves
D duck breast roasted, salad, flgv garlic mayo

Might have greek yog if needed!

Puppermint · 12/06/2020 09:33

Lolling at BIWI thinking it was Monday. I saw the post this morning and was worried I'd slept right through my weekend! Glad to hear it's still Friday - phew Grin

Pulled pork in the slow cooker for tea, with HM coleslaw and salad, and probably halloumi and prosciutto salad for lunch.

Am meeting up with a friend later who I've not seen since before lockdown for a catch up in her garden if the rain holds off. There will be gin, but just the one as I'm driving, and I'll take my own skinny tonic.

Ninkanink · 12/06/2020 09:43

Oh BIWI that is totally something I would do!

Morning everyone, hope you all have a great day and KOKO! 🌸🌺🌼🌷

Laska2Meryls · 12/06/2020 09:52

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/06/2020 10:02

@Moraxella

Long term I might aim for 5:2 or IF. There’s one tiny Canadian study which queries vessel damage from cheat days on low carb diets 😩
I know someone, who has been eating a ketogenic LCHF diet for a couple of years now. He told me there are studies, which advise to briefly come out of ketosis every now and then. (I imagine that doesn’t mean big bars of chocolate and packets of biscuits). I haven’t read up at all and this is only second hand info. But thought it may be of interest vis a vis the vessel damage?
BIWI · 12/06/2020 10:22

I'd be really interested to read those studies, @Mummyofittledragon - any chance of a link or two?

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 12/06/2020 10:31

I remember that from Atkins. He said that some people found they would start to suffer some quite mild side effects (can’t remember what they were) if they strictly low carbed for too long at a time. His solution was to recommend eating his version of ‘galettes’ (don’t remember his recipe for it) once a week, iirc.

BIWI · 12/06/2020 10:42

Galettes - wasn't that the Dukan diet?

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 12/06/2020 10:45

Oh. Maybe. It was a long time ago and I didn’t follow it for long! Makes sense seeing as galettes are a French thing......

venusandmars · 12/06/2020 10:45

Morning all, I'm procrastinating again Due to COVID and lockdown, much of my work has stopped. When I'm crazy busy, I feel like I'm firing on a cylinders, get loads of things done. Now the less I have to do, the more I delay doing the things that need to be done. So instead of enjoying a relaxed afternoon, knowing that all is right with the world, I spent aeons fiddling around with a vague sense of guilt at not doing a piece of work that is overdue, then either do it in a rush at the end of the day, or still don't do it and wake up worrying about it in the night. Madness.

Right, after I've finished this post I am going to make a mug of creamy coffee, and then I WILL get on with my work.

Food today:
break fast with creamy coffee
L - left over veg and cheese omelette with left over chorizo and tomato stew
D - a real treat - restaurant delivering Luxury Shellfish dinner: dressed crab with smoked mayonnaise and Asian slaw; lobster in seaweed butter sauce with asparagus. All we need is a bit of warmth and sunshine and I could be on holiday.

Ninkanink · 12/06/2020 10:47

Oh wow that dinner sounds like absolute heaven.

Randomfatty · 12/06/2020 10:50

morning all - had a bit of an odd night where I was too hot and kept waking up in the middle of the night Sad
apart from that koko with IF and have a couple of hours until lunch - will be having an omelette I think with cheese mushrooms and chorizo with some salad, dinner is lamb kofta with yoghurt dip, some leftover paneer and salad and I use gem lettuce for wraps! hope everyone is having a good day - its very cold here again!

Ninkanink · 12/06/2020 10:56

I’m sorry you didn’t sleep well. 🌷

I woke up at half four for the first time in a very long time! I’m so grateful that my sleep has been good for months now (suffered very badly with stress-induced insomnia for about 9 continuous months a couple of years ago and by the end of it I really felt like I was going mad). I think my wake up last night was caused by taking my meds too late in the day and also because I was riled up about things going on in the world. I’m trying to be uber calm and just let my mind and body rest today.

Rshard · 12/06/2020 10:57

Jealous of your dinner venus

Cold here too randomfatty, cardigans, fluffy socks and slipper being worn by dd and I.

So hard to remember which day it is at the moment and as for the date?

Ninkanink · 12/06/2020 10:58

Apparently it’s Monday. 😉
