Evening campers!

Setting this up now, as I had a bad night last night so I'm sloping off to bed early

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Seriously - if you haven't had a look, explore all the different resources on the tabs

Welcome @burratabitch!

No need to be on the spreadsheet if you don't want to.

And I think there are several veggies on Bootcamp!

Sauvignon - most pizza places do chicken wings as an alternative. When we order takeaway we get an absolute bucket load of wings for me, DP and DS2, plus order/make a salad, then get pizza for the rest of them!

I understand about not wanting to make a big deal about dieting in front of the DCs. We’re always told to not talk about weight and diets as it sets a bad impression. But they’re bound to notice that you’re not having what they’re having, so I’m sure it’s ok to say I’m trying to cut down on sugar etc, just as long as you’re not saying “I’m so fat and disgusting, if I eat cake I’m going to get even more fat and gross”!

They’re taught about food groups and healthy eating at school so this is a good opportunity to educate them that fat isn’t the enemy.

Takingontheworld · 04/06/2020 14:02

Hi all.

I dipped into the first bootcamp thread (had a name change and lost track of myself)

I'd already started it when i found it so got myself a bit pickled.

I started may 19th.

I lost 10lbs in 10 days but have had no movement in 5 days now.

I've had some advice (that led me back here) and suspect that when I upped my dairy/cheese intake to reach my fat macros that perhaps this has stalled my losses.

I've also unintentionally fallen into only eating salads. I need to start creating actual meals.

I'm feeling pretty low and not getting the energy boost I expected by now 2 weeks in. I could have sobbed this morning after weighing.

I really want this to work though so I'm going to keep going. I have keto sticks arriving today although i'm chugging 3.5ltrs a day so now reading it's unlikely to show ketones as I'll be flushing them out.

I honestly just feel a bit sad and lost. I was so excited with the quick weight loss.

Takingontheworld · 04/06/2020 14:03

My dd is asking and I'm telling her I'm eating certain foods to try and help fix my body because I have arthritis. Seems better than saying mummy's on another diet.

Burnshersmurfs · 04/06/2020 14:33

Put on a kilo overnight, but I must have glugged down at least a litre during the night- was incredibly thirsty. I'm a daily weigher so not too bothered by the ups and downs. Good NSV though- managed to get one of my rings off for the first time in months! Now for the other one....

prettybird · 04/06/2020 14:36

Takingontheworld - sorry to shout but you've lost 10lb Shock

You didn't expect that rate of weight loss to continue did you? Confused

As we've often said on here, weight loss is not linear. It's often the case that we stall for a while (although 5 days is not a stall Confused) and sometimes even go up slightly, especially when there is a big initial loss. That's why we have the expression KOKO : you need to maintain this WoE Smile

Weeks 3, especially 4 and 5 are notorious for not showing changes on the scales and even increases.

I lost 6lb in the first week: I'll be happy with an average of 1lb/week over the next 4 weeks. Might be more, might be less Smile At least I am back in the "Zone" Halo

BIWI suggests that those that get disheartened by daily fluctuations perhaps shouldn't weigh daily - maybe that the case with you?

BIWI · 04/06/2020 14:48

@Takingontheworld

Welcome!

I started may 19th.

So you're now in week 3. As @prettybird has explained, it's very, very common for weight loss to slow/stop (even increase) in weeks 3 & 4. (Sometimes even in week 5). Don't panic! It happens to so many people regardless of how well they've been sticking to the rules.

I lost 10lbs in 10 days but have had no movement in 5 days now.

Fantastic! Flowers. No movement in 5 days explained by my paragraph above. But also, you may find it better, psychologically, to NOT weigh daily. Just do it weekly. The other thing that's really worth doing is to take your measurements, as it's not unusual to find that you're losing inches even if the scales aren't telling you that.

I've had some advice (that led me back here) and suspect that when I upped my dairy/cheese intake to reach my fat macros that perhaps this has stalled my losses.

More likely to be the week 3 phenomenon - but you could explore using butter and oils for your main fat source, rather than cheese and cream?

I've also unintentionally fallen into only eating salads. I need to start creating actual meals.

Salads are perfectly fine, as long as you're including protein and more than just lettuce and cucumber - and, of course, using an oily dressing and/or mayonnaise on them. But more variety is always a good thing - boredom can quickly lead to falling off the wagon.

I'm feeling pretty low and not getting the energy boost I expected by now 2 weeks in. I could have sobbed this morning after weighing.

Forget about the daily weighing then! If you're not getting the energy boost, then this indicates you're not eating enough protein and fat. This is a high fat way of eating.

I really want this to work though so I'm going to keep going. I have keto sticks arriving today although i'm chugging 3.5ltrs a day so now reading it's unlikely to show ketones as I'll be flushing them out.

Joining us here will help you keep focused! And yes, definitely junk the ketostix ...

I honestly just feel a bit sad and lost. I was so excited with the quick weight loss.

Aww. Don't feel sad - and if you join us, no need to feel lost. You should still feel excited about what you've achieved so far - 10lbs is amazing! Flowers

A caveat though - if you're expecting the rate of loss to continue then you will be disappointed. Once the scales get going again - which they really will - you should expect a rate of loss around 1-2lbs a week.

Good luck!

If you're still thirsty, despite drinking loads, you need more salt.

Why not tell family you are on a diet?

My own parents are always talking about diets and getting fat. (They are both slim.) I put on weight in my teens despite (?) always being warned about being greedy and not eating more than my share. I do remember often being hungry yet steadily getting heavier.

I dieted a lot (then and later) and was often able to stay slim for a while, but ended up a calorie-encyclopedia with no great knowledge of nutrition and a really poor attitude to eating.

I'm much too old to blame my parents for my weight (actually, good experience on this low-carb way of eating suggests that I have always had a problem with carbs - how could they know that? ) but I have worked not to pass down the fear of food to my own children.

Takingontheworld · 04/06/2020 15:03

BIWI I've actually just burst into tears. Thank you so much for your kindness especially.

10lbs is so great, I have an issue with always reaching the 1st mark and then falling off the wagon.. so I was excited to sort of zoom past that brick wall. I think seeing the scales sit through triggered a fear that history will keep repeating itself. I'm so frustrated with myself

Interesting about the tricky weeks,...i wish I'd known this before for mental prep!

Funnily enough this is the first ever time I've weighed so frequently. I found weekly sw weigh ins excruciatingly long so checking in every 3 days was keeping me going... until it wasn't! I'll hold off now.

I have several stone to lose (although 3-4st would just be great... but really i need to lose 6 to be healthiest. I'm being realistic though)

I feel a bit silly, keto was sold to me as a super speedy way to lose the weight, some even claiming i could lose 3 stone within 4-6 months. Which seemed madness but it would make such a huge difference to my life if that was the case.

Perhaps I've been misled and had my hopes raised way too high.

Thank you again.

I'm roughly hitting 20-25g carbs,(i know your bootcamp aimed for 50g but i was already a week in and coping fine at 25 and was led to understand this is key to ketosis) around the 80gish mark for protein and around 100gish for fat. My friend calculated my macros and I know that she calculated the protein and fat higher than that but I've still been finding my feet a bit.

SunshineInMySprocket · 04/06/2020 15:07

Hi,

Just checking in to say hi! Sorry to hear that some are having a hard time. We have had been having a tough time here but I am staying focused on this WOE even though I really wanted something sweet this afternoon. I had another half litre of water then a creamy coffee instead.

I've done my 5km walk for the day and alternating that with cycling each day. Going to try and introduce some weight bearing exercise this week too.

Have a great day everyone, the chat is so motivational and keeps me going!

prettybird · 04/06/2020 15:15

Takingontheworld Thanks to you. You've done so well, you should be proud of yourself. Thanks

It is possible to lose 3 stone in 6 months (I did: I went from 14st 13lb to 11st 13lb in about that time) - but after the initial "whoosh" it's a matter of "slow and steady" Smile.

Don't worry about the level of carbs: BIWI will no doubt be along to say to make sure you have plenty of veg and salad as your carb allowance.

I find it best not to think about being in ketosis but to concentrate on being ketogenically adapted Smile It's a subtle difference, but results in a different mindset. Being ketogenically adapted is what allows us to draw on our fat stores for energy.

OceanDweller · 04/06/2020 15:21

On my phone where I seem to have different username though I never remember setting that ! Anyway wanted to post this link to a ted talk I just listened to for anyone who struggles ( like myself) with emotional eating (or drinking, or smoking, or...) www.ted.com/talks/judson_brewer_a_simple_way_to_break_a_bad_habit/up-next I found it really interesting. Back later on laptop to check in properly

BIWI · 04/06/2020 15:26

I've actually just burst into tears. Thank you so much for your kindness especially.

Aww - I'm sorry to make you cry! Just be glad it was from kindness though, and not my Big Stick Wink

I feel a bit silly, keto was sold to me as a super speedy way to lose the weight, some even claiming i could lose 3 stone within 4-6 months. Which seemed madness but it would make such a huge difference to my life if that was the case.

Bootcamp isn't keto. Keto is super strict, and limits carbs to 20g per day. On Bootcamp we don't count the carbs, but by focusing on lower carb veg and salad (as well as avoiding higher carbohydrate foods in general) that's how we lose the weight.

If you assume a 2lb loss per week, that's 8lbs a month - so let's round that down to 7lbs/half a stone. Therefore 3 stones will take you around 6 months to lose. However some people lose at a faster rate, especially when they have more to lose, so that's a 'best guess'

Perhaps I've been misled and had my hopes raised way too high

Possibly! I can't really comment, because I don't know enough about keto.

What I would say, though, is that this is a marathon not a sprint. The weight didn't just suddenly go on, so it stands to reason it's going to take a while to shift. (It's also a maddening fact that it seems to go on faster than it will disappear!)

Best advice I can give you is to keep your focus on the short term - if you keep thinking about the 6 stones you want to lose, that can seem overwhelming. So think about the next half stone, or seeing the next lower number on the scales - I don't know how much you weigh, but for me, my first target was getting under 150lbs (which is 10 stone 10lbs). My next target is to lose half a stone, and my next one after that is to see the scales start with a 9 rather than a 10. Each target is only small, but it makes it seem much more achievable and within my grasp.

We only had a carb target last week as it was a super strict 'get back on the wagon' week! From now on, we don't count. You should be aiming for your daily intake to be high fat/medium protein/low carb - entirely up to you if you want to monitor your macros, but frankly I can't be arsed!

The difficult think about carbohydrate intake is that we all react differently. Some people can tolerate a much higher daily amount than others, and the only way to find out how much you can tolerate is through trial and error.

All of that said, if you lost 10lb in the first 10 days, you were doing something right!

Thanks Pretty, you make so much sense.

BIWI please don't stick me Grin clearly I'm a crier.

I think I'll keep going as I am macros wise (always swore I'd never do shit like this so not sure how I ended up doing it!) And if things haven't picked up in a couple weeks I'm going to adjust to your way as I think its much more sustainable xx

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/06/2020 16:02

I'm going to post this incredibly shallow article... www.today.com/health/study-shows-how-much-weight-you-need-lose-look-more-t60261

Motivates me, much to my eternal shame bad feminist.

venusandmars · 04/06/2020 16:05

taking on the world I agree with having lots of little milestones - I sometimes switch from lbs to kgs to hit specific round numbers, moving down a category on the BMI scale is good, and measuring your waist, upper abdomen (where belly fat is stored), thighs, arms, hips etc are all great indicators that the fat is shifting. Getting to next notch on your belt or fitting comfortably into a favourite piece of clothing. Trying on something from when you were heaviest and noticing that it is too big. These are a few of my favourite things...

I still have the dress of shame from my niece's wedding. I loved the material and bought it a few months early with the intention of losing some pounds that I didn't. In the end I cut the seams up the side so I could fit into it. Then I had to wear my jacket all the time on a sweltering hot day, because I couldn't let anyone see what I'd done. The dress has since been resewn, and is now way too big but it sits in my wardrobe as a reminder.

NigellaAwesome · 04/06/2020 16:16

I love that sentiment of passing my weight to someone I don’t like @ShagMeRiggins Grin.

@BIWI, yes, my manager was supportive. I started a new role 3 weeks ago after 2 years of awful stress in work which left me with a diagnosis of PTSD. So there has been a combination of feeling absolute relief at starting somewhere new, feeling very fragile, wanting to make a good first impression, new job to learn, and anxiety about being in an office environment at the moment when I have asthma. I managed to hold it together for a bit then fell apart. He was lovely. He knew a bit about what I had been through, but hadn’t really appreciated the full extent and the need for baby steps. My fault for not being clearer with him up front. I’m taking annual leave today & tomorrow to try to pace myself and might try to do that every couple of weeks.

Aaanyway, less of my life story. I am in full on keto mode - loving not being hungry, and have shifted another kilo since Monday. I’m managing the IF pretty easily.

I know the calorie counting malarkey during the first week didn’t suit everyone, but I found it really useful, really just to re-educate myself around some foods that I had considered fairly benign, such as nuts —not that I had any—

I did a monster cookathon yesterday - homemade coleslaw and mayo, Greek salad, coriander & lime dressing, mackerel pate, and homemade chicken stock. Seeing glass dishes of good stuff in the fridge makes me happy 😊

I’m happy to share the recipe for coriander & lime dressing if anyone is interested - it’s delicious!

prettybird · 04/06/2020 16:17

Yup - I don't think in terms of my overall target (although I have one Wink): I'm always focused on the next milestone: breaking through a stone or half stone barrier (like I did in Week 1 - getting under 12 stone Smile) or the amount lost (like this morning, when I'd lost 1/2 stone since I started last Monday Smile).

Next target is to get under 11st 7lb - which is going to take me a bit longer.

Hopeislost · 04/06/2020 16:38

@Takingontheworld I downloaded the Happy Scale app on the recommendation of a previous poster and found it useful. It tracks overall trends in your weight, which is useful if you weigh regularly and are a bit up and down. The app can also break your weight loss into smaller milestones to aim for. Well done on the 10lbs!

Rshard · 04/06/2020 16:38

I wholeheartedly agree with prettybird about milestone or mini goals. Breaking up the end point into smaller goals definitely keeps me on track, achieving one inspires the next one. My first mini goal is 7lbs.

That dressing sounds lovely nigella and I’m so glad your line manager was understanding.

Ninkanink · 04/06/2020 16:47

Good to see you here @Takingontheworld and welcome to all the new people! 🌷

I’ve got dinner in the oven (pork belly roast), carrots and parsnips are parboiled and prepped, sprouts are waiting to swim in butter and garlic, and I will make mashed potatoes later for DH. Cooking instructions for the pork called for 250ml chicken stock so I’m now sat relaxing and drinking the other half of the stock. Such a comforting drink on a day like this. 👍

kakiqueen · 04/06/2020 17:02

@BIWI
Hello. Please can you add me to the spreadsheet of fabulousness?
On 1.6.2020 I weighed 66kg, which is 145 lbs.

I am finding that posting here and reading everyone's advice is really helping in keeping me going.

Thank you!

Takingontheworld · 04/06/2020 17:10

Someone else mentioned happy scale app but i couldn't find it on first glance, will try again.

Yes i can't bare to think of it as a big goal. I just really wanted to get to the next stone bracket by the end of this week (4lbs) which would have been roughly 7 days so was fairly hopeful.

Just had dinner- beef mince in taco seasoning, kale, peppers and cabbage. Cheese and sour cream..... that turned out to be a week out of date Envy< not envy.

Champagnecharleyismyname · 04/06/2020 17:14

Family want a Chinese takeaway tonight so I'm thinking of having a bit of duck with veg and a little hoisin sauce, some of the pork and beef dishes and a stir fry veg.

Does this sound ok? I don't want to jeopardise anything,
