Evening campers!

Setting this up now, as I had a bad night last night so I'm sloping off to bed early

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Seriously - if you haven't had a look, explore all the different resources on the tabs

Sorry, Mummy, cross-posted there.

Confused

that reads really weirdly, might have to stop shortening people's names!

I need some advice please - I am drinking plenty of water, putting salt on my food, getting good sleep but feel achy and exhausted, could be hot weather/pre menstrual as well as getting used to low carbing. Have been sticking to it religiously but yesterday licked the spoon after making meringues Blush. Apart from that, can I do anything to feel better?

SparklesAllOver · 03/06/2020 07:27

PS, it was only a little spoon and I only had one lick before throwing down the spoon in shock at what I had done.....

@MrsFionaCharming

I could use some advice about electrolyte replacement.

I’ve been having palpitations and dropped beats, plus some runs of tachycardia. I’m fairly certain it’s anxiety / stress induced, but it does seem to have got worse since I’ve been low carbing. I’ve been drinking boullion occasionally, but I think getting a specific electrolyte replacement would be a good idea.

I looked on Amazon for Hi5 which I think was the recommended one. The only thing I’ve found that doesn’t specify it’s high energy (read: high carb), contains sucralose. Is that acceptable?

@Mummyoflittledragon's post is very good.

Sounds to me like you need salt - are you cooking with it/using it on your food? Bouillon 'occasionally' isn't enough.

The electrolyte tabs are called Zero - they may contain sweeteners, but in the short term, that's less of an issue than ensuring your electrolytes are balanced.

There's information about it here

You could also try increasing the amount of carbohydrate you're eating. Try having a slice of wholemeal toast. If the palpitations stop then you know it's the carbs.

However, if it doesn't stop, or this persists for more than a day or so please go and see your GP

Again, this is carb flu. In particular, it sounds like yours is about lack of magnesium.

<a class="break-all" href="https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/side-effects#legcrampswww.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/side-effects#legcramps" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> info here, from The Diet Doctor again

Here's a list of good food sources of magnesium (obviously ignore the nuts/seeds/chocolate/banana for now!):

... and ignore the rice and the low fat yoghurt! It's definitely high fat yoghurt that you should be eating

Have been eating lots of greens and full fat greek yoghurt for last couple of days, hopefully I will get a turbo charge soon! Thanks, BIWI!

Can I ask about semi skimmed milk in tea. Until now I've used almond milk but I really want one cup of proper tea with semi skimmed milk in the morning. Is this A Bad Thing .

BIWI · 03/06/2020 08:30

I'd seriously recommend that you get a supplement too - Zero

I am on Day 9 on no alcohol now, I am really proud of myself, this is the longest I have gone without a glass of wine in probably three years since I last did BC 'properly' and lost nearly three stone.

I know it's a struggle for many of us (clearly not those on Mumsnet who think a thimbleful of sherry at Christmas makes you an alcoholic Grin). Having a glass or two of wine every evening with a nice big meal was my 'norm'. It is a big change ... but it is so worth it.

Loving the 16:8 IF as well and never feeling hungry.

NigellaAwesome · 03/06/2020 08:53

Morning everyone,

Last week was a 3lb loss for me, which whilst modest compared to some of the others (awesome, well done!), I'm pleased with considering some of the challenges I faced last week.

Strangely, last Wednesday and Thursday I had a bit of a crying fit about work, and came clean with my line manager about how anxious I was about going into the office and my asthma Blush. I'm think it might have partly been to do with oestrogen being released. I'm also pretty sure I am retaining fluid with the warm weather- my ankles and fingers are puffed up.

It feels very comforting to be back on bootcamp and back in control of what I am eating- thank you Biwi and Athelstane 🌷

I'm really enjoying the chat on the thread too, albeit I seem to always be 2 - 3 days behind, so if I joined in it would be a bit like having a conversation with an elderly aunt who chips in about something 4 conversations later!

Anyway, have a good week peeps, I'll update the spreadsheet later.

Grin yeh I didn’t think that through when I chose my name. MOLD perhaps?
BIWI · 03/06/2020 08:56

@NigellaAwesome

Sorry you've been struggling. I hope your line manager was supportive? Did they suggest anything that might help you?

In the meantime, if you're suffering from fluid retention, I believe the (counterintuitive) answer is to drink more water. (Just keep up with the salt)

In response to @MarkRuffaloCrumble's suggestion that I post more info about Bootcamp/low carbing, I was digging around in the back pages of MN to find a piece I wrote some years ago. It seems to have disappeared now Hmm but I did come across this:

A webchat with Dr John Briffa

It was reading his book, Escape the Diet Trap, that really got me converted to low carbing. I'd read other stuff before (Dr Charles Clarke's book, The High Protein Diet) but although I was interested, wasn't convinced.

I'd seriously recommend that book to anyone wanting an easy introduction to low carbing.

The webchat was really good - he answered so many questions, many more than guests usually manage.

Was feeling really rough yesterday (upset tummy, not carb flu or coronavirus) so didn't manage much dinner.

So lunch is...
left over salmon with chorizo, tomato, olives, spinach
D - omelette with cheese, ham, mushrooms, plus a side of fried grated courgette (sort of like a courgette rosti)

BIWI · 03/06/2020 09:09

Hope you're feeling better today @venusandmars Flowers

Im also day 9 without wine which is great because I have not had a day without since my DM passed 18mths ago, and thats caused my weight gain.. But oh , the fruit craving has come in bad.. I keep thinking of strawberries and cream.
I need to look up when we can have some berries..
Otherwise im doing really well, still doin 16:8 which I like, but one thing I do find though is that I do need to eat dinner early to avoid the 'slight migrainey eyes' feeling .. I assume thats blood sugar, as it goes when I have eaten .. Coffee really helps too!
I tried one of those 'cold infusion' bags over the weekend in a big jug of water and ice with cucumber slices and mint . Really nice but they are expensive

Laska2Meryls · 03/06/2020 09:13

Courgettes Rosti sounds nice Venus and Mars
I love griddled courgettes with olive oil lemon and mint ( and sprinkled with feta)

devoncreamtea · 03/06/2020 09:15

Soo thirsty today! Drinking gallons - but think it might be the salt/electrolytes as above. Trying IF today but already feeling very hungry. Will distract myself with some tidying up.
B/L either scrambled egg etc or egg mayonaisse in lettuce wraps with other salad stuff.
D chorizo sausage with salad asparagus and broccoli.
Lots of limey water!

Kleptronic · 03/06/2020 09:22

I'm here but lurking. Lost two pounds, had a meltdown, brought on AF 5 days early, didn't do so great, meh. Refocus this week. Well done everyone.

Laska2Meryls · 03/06/2020 09:23

Ok rules are No fruit nada . No fruit.. ( sniff) but I am determined to do this .. . I have to do this, .....But oh its strawberry time .... ( Sob.) ....

prettybird · 03/06/2020 09:29

Less than 2 weeks to go before you can have berries Laska Smile - strawberries will still be in season Grin

devoncreamtea · 03/06/2020 09:29

Wait another 10 days and you can have berries! Our strawberries are ripe at the allotment - thankfully I have kids to hoover them up before I even get a chance to want one!

Laska2Meryls · 03/06/2020 09:31

Ooh really? Thanks ! I shall start a tick off list on my calendar to Strawberry Day !! ( cheered up) ..

Freetodowhatiwant · 03/06/2020 09:32

Morning all, well done with all the keeping on (am I right in guessing that is what KOKO is?) despite some stressful situations. The wine craving for me at the moment isn’t about stress - although goodness knows why because I’m locked down with DH who I am separating from and we are, as soon as our house sale goes through, going our separate ways after 20 years. So it hasn’t been an easy time. I think I got all my sad/stress drinking out of the way in April. So glad April is behind us. For me it’s about the celebratory drinking, the marking of the weekend. It’s also our 10 year anniversary on Friday (random to celebrate this given the circumstances I know). Anyway @BIWI your big stick has convinced me not to have those glasses of wine and to wait another couple of weeks.

Is anyone else weighing themselves every day? I do like doing it as it keeps me in check but today has been annoying as it’s the first day I haven’t seen even a slight drop. I’m mid cycle though, I can feel it, and I think that always makes me a bit bloated. I’ve stuck strictly to the woe plus 16:8.
