Evening campers!

Setting this up now, as I had a bad night last night so I'm sloping off to bed early

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Joining the gang who’ve had a rubbish day. The subject for my degree dissertation has been rejected today so back to the drawing board for plan b. Dh offered to fetch wine but I’m resisting.

Sorry for those who have had rubbish/sad days. Tomorrow is another day.

1Wildheartsease · 02/06/2020 19:20

Roast duck sounds great - and I agree about the mint tea.

Sorry about the rejection Rshard - hope that another plan unfolds very soon. (Well done on your own rejection - of the wine.)

colouringindoors · 02/06/2020 19:56

Another struggling with the state of the world today. Wine has been consumed. The food however was bang on bootcamp Hmm

BIWI · 02/06/2020 20:01

Oh no!

Don't give in to the wine!

It's absolutely vital to start to learn how to separate emotions from food. Cheating, whether it's with wine, or cake, or pizza, or chocolate, or gin won't make anything better. And even if it seems to in the short term, all it leads to, ultimately, is feeling worse, and guilty.

I'm sorry so many of you are feeling down. Flowers

BIWI - any ideas how to not give into the wine? I'm still working as I know if I stop that is straight where I'm headed, but I do need to stop at some point!

Rshard · 02/06/2020 20:11

Thanks 1wildheartsease. A lovely bbq with dh and dd has cheered me up. It was surprisingly easy to resist the wine actually.

BIWI · 02/06/2020 20:24

@SophieRay

Er ...

You are a responsible grown up. You know the score! It doesn't matter what I tell you - it's up to you to choose not to give in.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, or not what you want to hear. There's no magic solution I can give you!

Is it ok to plan to have some wine? I planned to have a glass or two on the weekend having by then gone without for two weeks.

Puppermint · 02/06/2020 20:35

I resisted! Made tea then took the dog out for a walk in the woods so feeling a bit better. DH just made me a chamomile tea and I'm looking forward to having a sneaky peak on the scales in the morning to hopefully spur me on.

BIWI · 02/06/2020 20:37

NO, NO, NO!

Have you read Bootcamp rules?!

NO ALCOHOL FOR THIS WEEK OR NEXT WEEK.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/06/2020 20:45

As someone who worked in a rehab and really likes wine (and rum, beer, gin...) if you genuinely can't stop drinking for three weeks, you do actually need to look at your relationship with it. It may not be addiction, but it might be a problem.

I think a lot of it is habit. It means I'm off the clock. The taste signals rest and relaxation. It is associated with nice things.

BIWI · 02/06/2020 20:50

The problem is, though, that it's so easy to find an excuse for it - I've had a hard day, I've had a great day, it's Friday, it's a shit day ...

Ultimately it's your decision if you choose to break the rules give in and drink the wine (or the gin, or the rum, or whatever).

But please know that it will stop you losing weight

So just imagine what it's going to be like next Monday when you get on the scales. Will those couple of glasses have been worth it?

It all comes down to what you want most. Instant gratification - nice in the moment - or a loss on the scales later in the week.

Thanks Moraxella. I don;t know much about Hypoglycemia. I do know that my blood sugars were good during pregnancy as i had two glucose test. Will do some reading, im over 4months postpartum though so hormones hopefully are returning to normal.

Moraxella · 02/06/2020 21:49

sorry - i just re-read and didn't mean to type hypoglycaemia! (Freudian slip, my brain is fried this evening). Low carb ultimately results in you burning fat for energy instead of carbs and producing ketones. BF has been documented a few times in medical journals to mess up the regulation of this to the point where the ketones cause problems and can lead to you being very unwell. So the advice is to not go too low on carbs.

BIWI · 02/06/2020 22:02

Yes, that's why we advise women to follow Bootcamp Light when breastfeeding, rather than full-on Bootcamp.

Glad you resisted puppermint

Wise words mrsterrypratchett and BIWI.

venusandmars · 02/06/2020 22:25

@Ifeelfat I've done BC for a couple of years but now, suddenly I've discovered having a jug of water in the fridge with slices of cucumber in it, sometimes a sprig of mint too. I open the fridge and it smells of glorious summer freshness, and I just want to pour myself another glass of that lovely cool stuff. I also add iced water to peppermint tea (a teabag in a small amount of boiling water, topped up with the cold stuff)

And yes, yes to fresh ginger, lemon and mint... experiment, and enjoy the experiment even if you have to spit the nettle tea down the sink

SophieRay don't feel bad about that feeling of wanting a bucket of wine. We all have habits that comfort us, some are healthier than others. Just recognise that this is a habit and that you don't have to follow it. Bootcamp is a great chance to notice the habits, and maybe to try finding some alternative strategies...

I know it's not appropriate for everyone here, but in AA there is an approach called HALT, which is essentially, that before you have a drink (which you are craving) you examine whether the craving is because you are Hungry (H) Angry (A) Lonely (L) Tired (T) and to deal with each of those before resorting to alcohol. I sometimes apply a sort of TALT (thirsty, angry, lonely tired) approach to my food cravings and usually by the time I've had a big drink of water, dealt with my anger by punching cushion, phoned a friend to deal with my loneliness, and had a bath or a nap to deal with my tiredness - well then the need to much a bag of crisps or eat a cake has passed.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 02/06/2020 22:26

@BIWI would it help to reiterate the science behind low carbing on here?

There seems to be quite a few posts asking whether just cheating ‘a little bit’ will hurt, like on a calorie controlled diet.

I know you’ve said it before about how going over on carbs essentially puts you on a high fat high calorie diet, which we all know won’t work for weight loss!

But something seems to be lost in translation about the process of going into ketosis and staying there.

I know we could all just google it Grin But maybe a succinct breakdown of why a glass of wine or a piece of cake will fuck the whole thing, not just mean a slightly smaller loss, as it might do on a calorie controlled diet, could save you a lot of stick wielding over the next few weeks.

venusandmars · 02/06/2020 22:37

And on the wild dreams... I woke up in the early hours reciting lists of posters names - Onceuponabeery, Athelstane, Mrs F, Koala, Rayna (who is not even on this BC) were amongst the names that featured, but I guess you were all there...

Sounds kinda like the end of The Wizard of Oz, venus Grin

MrsFionaCharming · 03/06/2020 00:04

I could use some advice about electrolyte replacement.

I’ve been having palpitations and dropped beats, plus some runs of tachycardia. I’m fairly certain it’s anxiety / stress induced, but it does seem to have got worse since I’ve been low carbing. I’ve been drinking boullion occasionally, but I think getting a specific electrolyte replacement would be a good idea.

I looked on Amazon for Hi5 which I think was the recommended one. The only thing I’ve found that doesn’t specify it’s high energy (read: high carb), contains sucralose. Is that acceptable?

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/06/2020 06:37

@MrsFionaCharming
If you are feeling dehydrated despite drinking the advised large amounts, you are lacking sodium potassium and magnesium - the latter being something a lot of people lack.

LCHF flushes these minerals out of the body as the retained water from high carb consumption and BIWI has explained we need to up our intake of these minerals to compensate. Salt has had a bad rap but without salt, we would quite literally desiccate and die. But it is a balance. I, for example, need and consume a lot of salt. For others my consumption would be ill advised.

In order to absorb the water you are drinking, you need to raise your body’s osmotic potential otherwise some of what you’re drinking is not being absorbed and is being expelled directly as pee. Think of it as watering a plant, which has its roots wrapped up in a plastic bag.

For hydration, I drink 3 tsps sole water diluted in a big glass of water. I would try less at first as if you drink it in a form, which is too concentrated, you will get the runs. To this, I add a glum (1-2 tsps?) liquid ionic potassium. I bought this off amazon the first time but found it cheaper from metabolics.com. This is a top class supplier of vitamins and minerals btw. If I need magnesium this is difficult for the body to assimilate, therefore, I use a transdermal spray magnesium. This is the sole recipe. wellnessmama.com/12158/make-sole/. These work best for me. But there are also other oral potassium / magnesium supplements.

The other thing you can do if you don’t fancy sole is to drink bovril or marmite. Both are great for hydration. The body needs to take these on in liquid form to increase the osmotic potential.

As for preprepared electrolytes, you’re right. They have a lot of sugar in them. These are used for rehydration for malnutrition and acute dehydration.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/06/2020 06:39

glum = glug

AthelstaneTheUnready · 03/06/2020 07:09

Bagsy be Toto.

@BIWI is your expert on these, MrsFiona'. Next time she answers I think I'll stick it on the spreadsheet, as it comes up a lot.

Mood improved somewhat today. Also seen one of my lost lbs again that had conveniently disappeared by Monday's weigh-in Hmm, and looks like I've lost another 1/2" off the hips.

Nice to see Biggus Stickus out on patrol last night Grin

The struggle not to have the end of the day drink is a weird one - some days fly by without even remembering there is such a thing, other days it's an absolute howl of despair.

Although, as a pp said, it's not actually the desire for the wine that's the howl, it's whatever lies under it - stress, sadness, etc. Act on that underlying cause, and it's half the battle done.
